Summary Police officers must provide for public safety by

maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property and enforcing

motor vehicle and criminal laws. Other tasks include recording facts and creating

reports about specific incidents, patrolling set areas either on foot, by motor vehicle, bicycle or on horseback, and also responding promptly to

calls for assistance. Police Officers often have to testify in court.

Job Outlook

Overall opportunities in local police departments will be favorable for individuals who meet the psychological, personal, and physical qualifications.

In addition to openings from employment growth, many openings will be created by the need to replace workers who retire.

Jobs with local police departments in urban communities in which the crime rate is relatively high, may be the easiest to get.

Some smaller departments may have fewer opportunities as budgets limit the ability to hire additional officers.

Bilingual applicants with military experience or college training in police science will have the best opportunities in local and State departments.

Police and sheriff's patrol officers had national median wages of $51,410 in May 2008.

The NYPD base pay for a patrol officer in 2011(while in the police academy) is $44,744

The pay after 5.5 years of service is $90,829

Education

• The amount of education needed to be a police officer varies from department to department. The NYPD and Nassau county police department require a 2-year college degree or 2 years of military service, whereas The Suffolk county police department requires a high school diploma.

• To become a police officer, one must also take and pass the required police exam, as well as attend a police academy.

After researching each of these careers in depth, I decided that law enforcement is the right career path for me.

Skills Needed to be 21st century workforce ready

Communications is very important for a police officer; he must be able to successfully pass along information, as well as receive information, quickly and correctly. to follow direct orders and understand the task at hand.

Critical Thinking is important when there is an instance where an officer must make logical decisions on the spot.

Listening is a skill that is necessary for following direct orders and understanding the task at hand.

Working in Teams is a big part of being a police officer; even though many times an officer will be on his own, sometimes he will be working with a partner or investigating a crime where there are many officers.

Organizational skills are needed in order to keep proper records of reports. Without this skill, many problems could be created.
