1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS

PLP, Frame and Infills and Mass these three things are the dsign targets in this semester. These three aspects represent the common structure and construction of one design project. Every element have PLP and different combination will cause different feelings, design ideas and create different design. Frame and Infills represent the structure of architecture and when play with it, different frames and different connections make a different surprise. Mass is the quite different with PLP and Frame and Infills. It pay

1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE

PLP is about the combination between point, line and plane. Therefore, i use the continuous point to create lines and use many small pieces to create plane. The plane which be made up by lines from the front side shows the movement of lines and sense of organization or hierarchy. In this design, i want to present the idea of continuous point and lines. About the shape, i use the word Z because i think Z is made of three lines and it is the best word to show the relationship of PLP.

1.2 FRAME & INFILL

For the frame and infills, i think it is more about the structure and it also can be used as decoration. So that i built this design by using 8 small cubes to present the most common frames of an architecture and create columns, stairs inside. My idea is that the infills is the key of frame and it can decide the shape and functions of frames.

1.3 MASS

Mass is more about the feeling of users on one design such as heavy, nervous and pressure. When i first saw the word of Mass, i think about the stairs because stairs is a basic element for people to walk and give people a sense of safety and so that i choose steps as the main elements of my design. For shading and light, i want to use the spacing to shading one step and light one step and so on.

CoNCEPtaCLE ModELMy idea is travel for this project. When talk about secrets, the first thing come to my mind are the regular shape, tunnels or even the small enclosed spaces at the end. Every shading area inside tunnel can be a good place for resting and the end point also provide a good

place to enjoy good view or thinking.

When i walking through Herring Island, two kinds of noise can be heared but their intensity are not very high. There are some peaceful natural noise can be heared from the centre and the frosts in Herring island. However, when i choose the walkpath around river, i can hear the fretful man-made noise.

When i think of the brief, the shelter is the main point and i think a pathway can probide a shelter for rest and also can hide secrets.

In th brief, there are three zones i need to be made. How to connnect them is the largest issue. So i just use landscape to create three zones and put the entry at the lowest point and use pathway to attract people to walk through three zones.

2.3 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

This proje t is also based on the provious three exercises- Mass, PLP and Frame and Infills.I get the idea of continous point, line from PLP to choose triangles as the main shape of my project because of stability and organization. I choose the idea of stairs to connect three zones from Mass and i think this stairs which made of stone can be a symbol of mass which will be conflict with timber walls and roofs and also stone stairs can use its interspaces in each turning points to make a small dark space for secrets. The idea of infills decide frames also be used in the shelter at the end to make more rooms for visitors.

2.5 FINAL DESIGN MODEL

My design idea is travel and conflict. I want to use the pathwayto express my idea of trave and use the transformation between light and shadow to express the idea ofconflict. I provide a shelter at the end of my pathway to previde a rest place for visitors. In fact, there are so many small spaces during the pathway and it is the place for keeping secrets.

3.0 REFLECTION

In this semester, i learn a lot from Studio:Earth. At start, i think this subject is more about landscape for design. But at the end, i find it is more than the analysis of landscape and selection. From PLP to Frame and informs, from Mass to the design for Herring Island. These exercise let me find the problem of analysis, drawings, technology use and the presentation skills. These problems challenging me and hinder my design development. Although there are so many problems, i also learn a lot from these exercise. In PLP, i learn the relationship between PLP and how to use PLP these three basic element to design. In frame and infills, the precedents from blog let me be surprise and impress me. How to use the common frames and infills to create an amazing structure? In Mass, the analysis of people’s feeling and the drawing skills are the best gift for me. In the last exercise, the combination between landscape and design confuse me for a long time and the relationship between three zones challenge me. Even in the last presentation, the posters make me crazy and do not know how to make it. After the suggestion from tutor- Helen, i know where i need improve such as the conflict between light and shadow in my last project and the landscape selection need to be cared. For the conflict between shadow and light, i think i can design a lot of small rooms or shelters and use different directions to achieve this targets. In this semester, there are too many problems i have found many issues during this semester such as drawing skills, computer skills, model making and language when compare with others. I need to be hard-working and try to catch up others in the future.
