JUSTLIKEFAITH,WEARENOTFLEETING.

How do you measure success? The amount of a paycheck? The lengthof your job title? The size of your house? At The Salvation Army,we measure success not in dollars or career status, but in the effectiveness of our work.

Watching a young girl take hold of her life. Helping a family make it on their own. Showing someone that their dreams can come true,no matter what the obstacles. We know we’ve done our jobs whenin the end, these individuals turn around and pass their positiveinfluence, their life story, their plan for success on to others.

For many of the children, adults, families and communities that weserve, we are more than a red kettle or a thrift store. We are learningcenters that set the foundation for success. After-school programsthat help guide children on the right path. Rehabilitation programsthat nurture in times of need. We’re there to encourage, to inspire,to build faith. Or simply to lend a gentle hand.

And the best part about The Salvation Army — once you come incontact with us, your life will truly be changed forever.

Throughout the following pages, you’ll see this sentiment come to life. We’ve used our famous shield — long a symbol of hope, faith, and compassion — to show that its influence stays with peoplethroughout their entire lives.

Without your generous and faithful support, none of this would be possible. That’s why we extend our deepest appreciation to you.

Committed to changing lives,

Lt. Colonels Fred and Barbara Van BruntMassachusetts State Commanders

When someone is touched bythe spirit of The Salvation Army,an extraordinary thing happens. It stays with them. It forms abond stronger than stone —one that cannot be broken. Itbecomes a ray of hope, guidingthemthroughout life. No matterhow far the journey, or howdifficult the road,The SalvationArmy will be there. That’s partof our devotion to thosewe serve, and our simple promise that noone has to walk alone.

EVERYSTEPOFTHEWAYBRIDGING THE GAPAlong our journey through life, we may encounter obstaclesand challenges that lead us down the wrong path. Luckily, for those of us at The Salvation Army, it’s not a matter of howfar one strays from that path, but how we can successfullyguide them back towards the right one.

Our Bridging the Gap program allows us to do just that bygiving first-time juvenile offenders the opportunity to wipetheir records clean by completing our three-month course. This course teaches at-risk youth the life skills needed to succeedin today’s ever-changing world and provides a network ofpositive influence long after the course is completed.

While program director Kellie Kelleher recognizes that theprogram can be difficult, the end result is quite empowering.“When they graduate from the program, they should have abetter understanding of themselves and how their decisionscan affect those around them.”

Weekly lessons blend spiritual and community elements, and focus on a particular topic such as goals, education andbuilding healthy relationships.Teens are shown how Godand the Bible can have a place in their daily lives, as well asthe importance of having a caring and supportive network.

The best part is that the Bridging the Gap program doesn’t justhelp these teens overcome today’s obstacles, but that it preparesthem for the road ahead. With lifelong encouragement, support, and even inspiration, their journey can be a successno matter where it takes them.

“You hear about how young kids are whenthey start going down the wrong path, andthat could have easily been my two boys.Fortunately, we found the Bridging the Gapprogram, and it really changed their lives…I noticed a change in Sonny first. He had areally negative attitude towards things after hisfather died. One day I noticed that he seemedvery happy, and was even smiling again. Itwasn’t long before I saw the change in DJ, too.It made me so happy to see them changing, and I knew it was for the right reasons.”

— Carmen, whose sons DJ and Sonny participated in the Bridging the Gap program

“I really feel good about sending my kids to Camp Wonderland.I know that the staff is well trained and that my kids are safe.Theyreally amaze me at how much they’ve learned when they come home, too. It’s not just a place where they can have fun but a place where thestaff has an impact on the lives of these children. My kids have reallybeen influenced by their counselors and learned from them.”

— Debbie, whose son and daughter attended Camp Wonderland

CAMP WONDERLANDMuch like the sun, an act of kindness can radiate warmth toall it touches. When something positive happens in our lives, our first reaction is to share it with others. We want them toexperience the same feelings of excitement and passion thatwe feel. As these feelings are spread from person to person, others are inspired to create their own kindness and pass iton. Eventually, the light becomes too bright to ignore.

It’s with this spirit that Camp Wonderland was created. Morethan a summer camp, it introduces children to the wondersof nature, the power of faith, and the strength of friendships.

Located on 110 acres in Sharon, MA, on Lake Massapoag,Camp Wonderland is an overnight camp for children ages 6 to 12. During week-long sessions, campers take part inhikes, enjoy arts and crafts, swim in the lake, and learn how

God can have a positive impact on their lives, all while buildingstrong friendships with other campers and their counselors.

“I remember one of my counselors, Pete, was always therefor me, whether I needed someone to talk to, pray with, orjust hang out with,” says Jonathan, who attended the campfor four years. “It really meant a lot to me that he cared somuch about me and the other kids.”

Positive role models like these set an example and inspiremany to return the favor. Many campers—includingJonathan—become counselors. “My life has really been influenced by coming to Camp Wonderland. I just hope thatI’ll have the same kind of impact on other children that mycounselors had on me.”

EVENTHESMALLESTGLIMMEROFHOPETRAVELSFARTHE CHILDREN’S LEARNING CENTERIt's not the size of the work, but the power behind it.There'sno better example of this than The Salvation Army's Children'sLearning Center in Dorchester.

Providing low-cost day care for more than 60 pre-school agedchildren, the Center allows us to touch the lives of some ofthe youngest members of our community. But at the Center,low-cost does not mean low quality. Each of the three classrooms is staffed with a licensed instructor who teacheslessons that encourage both academic and spiritual learning.

“Unfortunately, many of the children that come here have ahistory of learning difficulties or abuse in the family, so wework with them and try to get them the help they need,”says Jeffrey Bailey, director of the Center. “At the Children'sLearning Center, the kids always come first.”

And it's not just the kids who benefit from the Center. Mostof the families live within a five-minute radius of the Center, which allows the parents—many of whom are single mothers—to pursue career or educational endeavors of their own.

Thanks to recent renovations, the 40-year-old facility receiveda much-needed face lift. Classrooms were completely renovatedand updated, the library expanded, new energy efficient windowswere installed, and the building received handicap accessibleramps and an elevator.

These improvements have allowed the Center to carry on itsmessage of education and personal growth for the childrenand families of Dorchester.

Laurelia, whose son attended the Children’s Learning Centerfor two years, has seen the impact such a place can have firsthand. “The Center helped teach him that learning is fun, while developing his social skills with other children.Theyreally gave him a strong foundation to build on, and it’sshowing now that he’s older.”

“I was hesitant to bring Paul here.I thought that low-cost day carewould translate into low quality daycare, but it doesn’t. Knowing that mychildren are being taught by caringand respected teachers means somuch to me and to their future.”— Nicole, whose son attends the Children’s Learning Center

WORCESTER CORPS’ SALLY’S PLACEThere are certain times when we all take the little thingsfor granted: having a home, the support of loved ones, even nourishment. Unfortunately, many go withoutthese essential elements. At The Salvation Army, ourgoal is to help satisfy some of these needs, and provethat with the right encouragement, anything is possible. And sometimes, that starts with something as simple asa good meal.

The Worcester Corps’ “Sally’s Place” is a feeding programthat provides breakfast and lunch, one of the few programsin the area to offer both meals. While the majority ofthose who stop by are homeless, they also serve severalelderly and disabled people. In all, nearly 50,000 mealsare served each year.

The goal is to provide a nutritionally balanced mealeach day, which often consists of muffins, cereal, andjuice in the morning, and soup, sandwiches or chicken

in the afternoon. “Without us serving these people, many of them would go through the day without eatinga single meal,” says Captain Steven Lopes, CommandingOfficer at the Worcester Salvation Army.

Along with Sally’s Place, the Worcester Corps helpsfeed an additional 600 people each month thanks to awell-stocked food pantry. “We have a variety of perishableand non-perishable items that are distributed daily,” saysCaptain Lopes.

For many families, without the extra help from TheSalvation Army, they would not be able to make it ontheir own. According to Captain Lopes, “The WorcesterCorps isn’t just about one program serving one need inthe community.Whether you come to us to have lunchor are in need of groceries to get by, we want people toknow that we are here to serve.”

“I’m a single mom with two young children. Just knowing that I cancount on The Salvation Army each month for help allows me to provideother necessities for my kids. I couldn’t get by without their help.— Carla, who has utilized the Worcester Corps food pantry for 10 years

PLYMOUTH CORPS’ SENIOR PROGRAMThe sign of a true friend is that no matter how far orwinding the road becomes, they'll follow you to theend. This is also true for The Salvation Army. While wefocus on creating solid foundations for children andyoung adults, we have not forgotten about those who'vetraveled the road ahead of us.

Through our various Senior Programs across theCommonwealth,The Salvation Army can give somethingback to our seniors in the community and show themthat age has nothing to do with living life to the fullest.

Programs often involve arts and crafts, games, evenfield trips. Captain Dan Brunelle of the PlymouthSalvation Army says that he is always fascinated by thelife stories of the seniors and how much they share with

each other. “Without this program, many of them wouldhave very little contact with other people their ownage. It gives them something to get involved in and havefun with.”

For many of the seniors who participate in these programs,The Salvation Army provides a welcome connection toothers like themselves. And for some, it provides theright inspiration to travel a little bit farther down theroad of life.

“I feel very blessed to be living such a long life,” says89-year old Fernanda. “Coming to this program reallykeeps me going. I enjoy seeing everyone and makingnew friendships with the people here.”

“I’m very thankful that The Salvation Armyoffers this program for my mom. I think it has really helped keep her involved andconnected to the people around her. It’s awonderful thing to see and hear about all of the things they do here. It’s reallyhelped her enjoy this stage of her life, and we’re all happy to enjoy it with her.”

— Brenda, whose mother Fernanda participates in the Plymouth Corps’senior program
