Marine Superintendent Mr. Fabio Tagliavia is quoting:“As a company strategy, we aim to focus on preventing Engine wear, by removing generated contamination, as the main cause of premature wear affecting all critical engine components. We find wear at both cylinder head and pistons, which we then overhauled every 6000hrs and 12000hrs, respectively. The filtration systems provided as standard on most auxiliary engines donot remove the smaller pro-wear particles as soot, and so, as a precautionary measure, we recently retrofitted 12 engines with Filtek FT by-pass centrifuges, in the past six months. All the sludge collected by the centrifuge represents key contamination taken out of the lube oil system, reducing the impact on our critical engine components life. The overall investment is easily justified by the considerable reduction of our overall annual maintenance budget. Historically, I have witnessed first hand the expenditure of overhaul on the same MAN B&W engines, with and without a centrifuge fitted. Engines fitted with centrifuge have reduced overhaul costs and prolonged engine life. Additional savings of consumables - filter cartridges, fresh oil and additive packages - can be achieved with an appropriate oil analysis program -comparing the oil quality between engines with and without centrifuges.”
