The film trailer that I will be analysing is ‘The Purge: Anarchy’ it is a teaser trailer therefore it will have a lot of short takes and fast scenes to build the suspense and tension through the demographics who are watching the trailer. From the start of the trailer it already identifies us what institution the film has been distributed by, this indicates us the type of film it would be and audience who like the type of genre and film they produce will then know what to expect for this film. The sound uses a non-diagetic sound of a really happy soundtrack which contrasts the type of sound you normally hear from an existing film trailer, the sound is happy synchronising with the teaser trailer. Moreover with the non-diegetic sound they have used this which follows the five stages of Todorov’s theory of having the equilibrium showing everyone happy and as the trailer goes on it shows us the disruption of the event. As the trailer goes on the camera uses a tracking shot of the two characters in the car, the sound bridge is still played in the background while using a voice over of the two characters talking, the camera switches from a shot-reverse shot showing when the characters talk to each other to indicate who they are talking. The car then suddenly stops which indicates the disruption of the event, the non-diegetic sound then stop and changes the mood from being all happy to having that typical sound that are used in horror films which tells the audience that something bad is going to happen, and because this trailer is a sequel of the first purge audience who have already seen this will understand why the characters start to panic from the beginning and quotes that ‘no one will help them tonight’.

The car then suddenly stops which indicates the disruption of the event, the non-diegetic sound then stop and changes the mood from being all happy to having that typical sound that are used in horror films which tells

the audience that something bad is going to happen, and because this trailer is a sequel of the first purge audience who have already seen this will understand why the characters start to panic from the beginning and quotes that ‘no one will help them tonight’. The short take clips uses different still frames from the film to give that more clear understanding for audience who haven’t already seen the first one, the scenes fades out from the different clips so that it flows through really quickly and also gives suspense and enigma to the audience of what is happening. There is also a voice over used in this of what sounds like a robot or a machinery person talking indicating what is happening to explain the scenes being shown to the audience.

Furthermore with the scenes they are showing it is only a fast summary of the characters who are involved getting ready for the disruption of the event, which builds tension for when the recognition of the disorder occurs. Half way through the trailer this then shows us the villain in the film, the characters are dressed up in all black indicating that they are the bad ones as the black connotes to evil and also by using the mask this hides away their identity and

shows that they don’t want to be exposed to the victim who they are as looks to being killed as they start to chase the two main characters who were shown form the beginning to being chased.

The scenes once again are a lot faster with loads of jump cuts as they run away from the people who were on the vehicles. The non-diegetic sound is used to get the audience more excited and hyped of the things happening on the trailer, and also with the non-diegetic sound they used it is more directed to like a robot sound which works well with the voice over used early of the machinery

person speaking about what was going to happen. The scenes then fade into an intertitle indicating when the film will be released this only shows for like a second and then shows a still image from the actual film itself. The intertitle is all separated by the scenes in the film to make more sense of what the intertitle inbetween mean, and this also shows an enigma code as the demographics would want to find out more and because this is teaser trailer the information about the film is very limited and therefore with the intertitles it only shows one or two words.

Moreover with the scenes being shown it shows a lot of recognition of the disruption that has occurred, there are a lot of iconographys being shown such as villains, fire, guns and bombs that relates to the genre of thriller/horror. The scenes are in a very slow phases but still using that short take scenes and the non-diegetic soung in the background synchronise as the sound is slow to go well with the scenes being shown.

The ending of the trailer then informs us the title of the film. It uses a fades flag in the background of the America which indicates that it is an American film and it was based and film there and the very last scenes then uses a voice over once again of a girl which follows a conventions in horror film genres that women are normally targeted in these type of genre films reinforcing the weakness with women.
