I’m really thrilled by all of the opportunities I have had whilst studying, I couldn’t be more set for the industry; I’ve had experience on professional film sets, offers from London film companies and my debut film has so far been really successful.

Eleanor Smart, Film Production Joint Honours graduate.

In today’s world of multimedia communication, film makers and screenwriters work together in an unprecedented variety of contexts. To study Film Production and Screenwriting as a joint honours degree is therefore full of possibility and could lead to an innovative, interdisciplinary final year project that draws all your interests together.  Both subject areas nurture your creative development alongside craft and digital skills that are highly prized by 21st century employers.

Film Production offers opportunities to explore a broad range of film forms and cultures, including fiction and documentary forms and commercial and experimental production. You can specialise as you progress through the course and, if you wish, tailor your studies to focus on career specialisms including producing, directing, sound, cinematography, post-production, and visual effects. The craft skills of production are integral to your learning throughout and you are encouraged to experiment and explore your talents towards developing your own creative ‘voice’. Film Production is characterised by its practical approach to learning (you learn through making), by the value that it places on nurturing creative individuality and by its encouragement of a critically reflective approach.

Screenwriting nurtures your love of story and aims to develop your skills as a writer and media practitioner for the 21st century. It provides creative, challenging approaches to writing for the screen and performance – from initial conception to production. You are taught by lecturers with both academic and professional, industry backgrounds who are well placed to offer you expert advice and to support your development of original writing. The course provides you with many opportunities to network with industry contacts, supporting your developing understanding of how your writing skills are transferable to employment within the media industries. Scheduled visitors in 2014/15 include writers for Holby City, Hollyoaks and Moving On and development executives from the makers of TV shows including Gavin and Stacey, The Royle Family and Philomena. Oscar-nominated screenwriter Steven Knight (Dirty Pretty Things; Eastern Promises; Peaky Blinders) will be providing individual script feedback to the winner of The Steven Knight Award for Best Screenplay, awarded exclusively to one of Worcester’s final year Screenwriting students.

You will be able to realise your work in production, making use of the University’s Drama Studios and its Digital Arts Centre. The Centre includes individual edit suites with surround sound editing, a newly refurbished multi-camera TV studio, a sound recording studio and several mac computer suites with a full range of professional image manipulation, editing and sound post-production software.

Film Production and Screenwriting is led and taught by experienced film makers and screenwriters, industry practitioners and academics, and student performance is assessed entirely by course work. Studying these subject areas in combination could be right for you if your creative interests span working in moving image and other media contexts, and if your curiosity is fired by the creative possibilities of 21st century communication.
