How is a film financed and made?• The producer (e.g. the studio or Production Company) must secure

funding before the production of the film, before filming starts.• Government Grants• Grants are provided by government schemes designed to encourage

creativity and new talent.• The UK film council offers subsidises to filmmakers in the UK

meeting certain criteria.• Pre- Sales• Pre-sales involves the producers selling the right to distribute the

film before it is made-this is the most common method.• In order to secure their investment, distributor will expect certain

elements that are likely to guarantee success• These may include ‘Marquee’ names or some kind of change to a

film to make it more commercially tenable.

How a film is made

• A script treatment- ten or more pages concerning storylines, characters and locations is drawn up.

• A generic profile of film- to help investors to place film in marketplace ([potential audience)

• Proposed budget is made.

• Key Personnel- Stars, director etc

• Potential spin offs- merchandising and tie ins.

• After this production takes place this includes;

• Finding a camera crew and equipment.

• Sound crew and sound equipment

• Lighting crew and equipment

• Production design- art direction and dressers

• Actors- Method and typical day

• Cosyumes/Props- Make-up and hair

• Movie studios

• Production companies- The production company may be directly responsible for fundraising for the production. It handles budgeting, scheduling, scripting, the organization of staff, the production and marketing.

• Film Departments- Casting, Props, costume designers , stuntmen and sound personnel

• Editing departments- CGI, sound and special effects and editing labs.

Post Production

• Post- prodcuction is where everything is pieced together by the editor. The editors job is to enhance the work, cut out mistakes and put the whole film together.

• It also deal with the promotion of the film. The film needs to be advertised so that people will go and watch the movie

Distribution

• The last stage, distribution. This stage is how film makers get their films in cinema.

• What a film maker has to do is to got to a film distributor to publish their films. The distributors analyse the films to check if the public would enjoy the film and if its worth the money.
