Sunday May 17 4:00 PM Donations appreciatedThe Panama Pacific International Exposition: 100 YearsOne hundred years ago, San Francisco hosted the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE). The PPIE celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal and the re-birth of San Francisco nine years after the 1906 earthquake. A beautiful Jewel City was built on a marshy area on the north side of the city. See how the California Nursery Company in Niles helped build the fair by providing palm trees, other plants, equipment, and labor to create the beautiful grounds. Presented by Janet Barton. Followed by films from our archives: The Innocent Fair (1962) Ray Hubbard’s documen-tary about PPIE. The Gateway to the Pacific (1933) A documentary about the building of the Panama Canal.
