Metallica

Metallica is an American rock band that has been together for thirty years. They have put out dozens of albums and won many Grammies. The band members at the time my song was written were Cliff Burton, Kirk Hammett, James Hetfield, and Lars Ulrich. Before staring as lead singing James Hetfield was a worker in a sticker printing factory. They started in Los Angeles, California were Lars put an ad in the paper for a guitarist and James career as a sticker printer was ended. Soon they had a full fledge band put together. They often wrote about what was going on in the world, like wars and their past. Sadly about two years after their album Ride the Lightning was released Cliff Burton was killed in an accident when their tour bus flipped into a ditch in Sweden. Cliff was thrown from the bus and crushed. After his death the band took a break to grieve for their friend, but they were soon back on stage performing with their two new additions Jason Newsted and Robert Trujillo.

The tension of the Cold War.

The cold war was the threat of the USSR & USA bombing each other. The main conflict came from their differences in political views. The USSR was communist and didn’t see eye to eye with the views of democracy. The USA was and still is capitalist, and like most western democracies it was afraid of communism spreading. Also both of these world powers had major arsenals of nuclear power aimed at each other.

The horrible truth

The truth is that on the earth we have so much destructive power we could destroy the earth hundreds of times over. It only takes about 100 nuclear bombes to completely destroy the earth and all of it’s inhabitants. There is and estimated 23,000 nuclear weapons in existence. If a fraction of them were set of we could all die.

Nuclear and atomic bombs

Nuclear and atomic bombs are some of the most destructive weapons in existence. After testing in the 1950’s almost everyone had some kind of radiation.

Fear

“Bursting with fear” This line pretty much speaks for its self. People were truly scared and so was the government. They were scared of communism coming to America and afraid of being bombed.

Repetition

The repetition of the line “fight fire with fire” is to highlight the fact that you cant fight fire with fire. But that is what we were doing during the cold war.

“a technique in which a sound, word, phrase, or line is repeated for effect or emphasis”

Solders dying I feel like the line “lay us all to rest” is referring to the soldiers that were killed in the Korea and Vietnam wars. Many soldiers returning from these wars were not looked upon as heroes and were often blamed for the war its self. When in fact the majority of men that fought in these wars were draghed and didn’t have a choice in going.

A Death By Nuclear War

This line to me seem like it is trying to express how painful a nuclear explosion would be. That it would burn you to a crisp. Even if you were lucky enough to survive you would have been exposed to high doses of radiation and would likely have mutation in you genes or the genes of you children.

Fighting

Even though most people in the United States disagreed with the wars fought during the cold war, they were very personal wars many people knew at least one person who was fighting in the war. My grandfather Coreman Ronald Goss served in the navy on the destroyer USS Haynsworth DD700 during the Korean war.

Metaphor for how short life is. Life is short even if a nuclear bomb is

never dropped you have to live life to the fullest because you never know what could come tomorrow.

“a type of figurative language in which a comparison is made between two things that are essentially unalike but may have one quality in common.”

People truly believed they were going to be bombed People have bomb drills where

children would climb under there desk at school. There were also bomb shelters built for common people and for the leaders of the country.
