Dear HMVAMC Participants: It is my pleasure to welcome the 54th Annual Hudson-Mohawk Valley Area Math Conference to Albany High School. We have experienced many changes in the last year with the integration of the Common Core Standards, Student Learning Objectives and a new teacher evaluation system. As educators we make every effort to implement changes to the best of our ability and to the benefit of our craft, and our students. We continue to find new ways to engage our students in mathematical concepts that they will use for the rest of their lives and to bring relevance to topics to ensure student understanding. We have been challenged to prepare students for jobs that have yet to be created and retool our instruction and incorporate 21st Century learning skills. This conference will be a great opportunity to put our best thinking together around preparing our students for the incredible future that awaits them. I hope you will find the facilities at Albany High School accommodating to the needs of your conference. We are honored to play the role of host to this important conference. We recognize that it is the collaborative efforts of educators working together that create successful learning opportunities for our students. Sincerely, Cecily L. Wilson Interim Principal Albany High School

Dear Math Colleagues: On behalf of the City School District of Albany’s Math Department and the Hudson-Mohawk Valley Area Math Conference planning committee, we welcome you to the 54th Annual HMVAMC! Upon review of the program you will find a wide variety of workshop offerings addressing all levels of math education. Special thanks to all presenters, vendors and participants who as in years past have made this conference a huge success! This year our program focuses on providing teachers with classroom strategies, technology and instructional practices to support the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) that were implemented in September 2012. Several presenters, as well as, consultants sponsored by major publishing companies, and even an author, will provide informative workshops that focus on the newest math standards. These workshops will span all grade levels: elementary, middle, high school and beyond. There is indeed something for everyone! Our hope is that participants will find each workshop useful when addressing the challenges that educators face during this ever-changing time in mathematics curriculum and instruction. Participants are encouraged to share their learnings and network with colleagues in an effort to keep informed of the educational updates. Discussion groups and wikis hosted through the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State at http://www.amtnys.org are a way to keep informed…consider becoming an AMTNYS member!

Come join us and fill your math toolbox with knowledge and treasures to support math education!

We welcome you and look forward to seeing each of you on March 23rd! Doreen L. Mitchell, HMVAMC Chair CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT OF ALBANY

Instructional Supervisor for Mathematics K - 12
