Fifth Sunday of Lent 12th / 13th March 2016
Vol. 34 No. 14
Paul and Sonia Tanham are
celebrating their 60th wedding
anniversary on the 19th August.
They came to the Holy Rosary
Parish in 1966 with four children
and two more children were born
while they lived in Woodlands. All
of their six children and seven of
their grandchildren have been
educated in Holy Rosary school,
Siena, Marist Brothers and now
Newman College. Paul and Sonia
have been part of the Holy Rosary
Parish for the past 48 years and
they have seen many changes over
the years including the building of
the church. They look forward to
many more years at the church
and in the area.
Is there a parent who hasn’t had to find an answer for the child who asks, “Are we nearly there yet?” It’s a question we might well be asking ourselves at this stage of our Lenten journey. Perhaps its time to recall the words of the first preface for Lent, as it used to be prayed: “Each year you give us this joyful season when we prepare to celebrate the paschal mystery with mind and heart renewed.”
Yes, it’s a joyful season, a time of renewal. It’s a gift, a grace. We don’t journey alone – we have the companionship of the whole Church along the way. For the whole community of faith Lent is a fresh opportunity to be set free, to discover what our deepest desire really is.
We can thank Richard de Wych, 13th century Bishop of Chichester, for taking us to the heart of Lent with his prayer (incorporated in a song from the modern musical Godspell): “to see thee more clearly, love thee more dearly, and follow thee more nearly”. A pilgrim’s hope indeed that we might all pray, day by day, on our way through Lent. ______________________________________________________

Annual Chrism Mass Invitation from Archbishop Timothy
“I invite you to attend the Chrism Mass which I will concelebrate with
the Priests of the Archdiocese of Perth at St Mary’s Cathedral
on Tuesday 22 March at 7.00pm During this Mass the Holy Oils will be
blessed and the Oil of Chrism consecrated. The Priests will also renew their
Ordination commitment. The Laity are invited to renew their commitment to holiness of life and to
service of the Church and society.” Most Reverend T Costelloe SDB
Archbishop of Perth
WORLD DAY OF PRAYER
The sun streaming in through the beautiful
stained glass windows of St. Paul’s Anglican
Church in City Beach was a very welcoming
atmosphere for all who attended this service.
Sue Farrell from St Paul’s led the service and
welcomed everyone to World Day of Prayer
(WDP).
Our Lady of the Rosary was well represented
and two of our parishioners participated as well.
Dorothy led the procession into the church by
carrying the Bible and in the prayer she told of
how she as a grandmother in Cuba used the
Bible to bring the Word of God and pass it on to
her children and grandchildren.
Also in the procession was a Mother bringing a
bowl of provisions, a young woman carrying a
candle, and three girls – one brought a pair of
maracas that bring joy and rhythm to the
community, one a plant of sugar cane, and the
other told us how she likes to come to church to
feel happy and sing.
The ‘Call to Worship’ was led by Lydia from
Our Lady of the Rosary following which we had
the Prayer of Confession and the Assurance of
Forgiveness. After a hymn we had Gospel
readings followed by the invited speaker,
Dr. Judith Woodward, a Retired History lecturer
from UWA who had visited Cuba and worked
there as a volunteer. In an interesting talk
Judith shared some of her experiences and gave
us an insight into the country and the people of
Cuba.
An offering was taken up to support the Bible
Society Project in Cuba called ‘Building
Healthy Relationships’ within the family with
God’s Word and stem the growing rate of
violence in the country. $597.05 was the
generous amount collected.
Following the final Prayer of Thanksgiving
Lorraine Allen, from the Holy Spirit Catholic
Church in City Beach, was commissioned to
coordinate the WDP service for 2017 when we
pray for the people of the Philippines.
The Service ended with a delicious morning tea
catered for by the ladies of St. Paul’s Anglican
Church.
Please mark Friday 3 March 2017 in your diary
and join us at 2017 World Day of Prayer.”

Sreymom’s story :
Learning more, helping many
‘Everyone…should be able to make a personal
contribution to putting an end to so many
injustices’ Pope Francis.
Sreymom, now 26, lives in the remote
Mondulkiri province of Northeast Cambodia,
where extreme poverty has led to many health
issues for the region’s indigenous population.
When she started work at the local Health
Centre, Sreymom was eager to use her three
years of midwife training to help care for
indigenous mothers and children in the
surrounding villages. But soon she realised
she lacked the practical experience she needed
to safely assist in childbirth. “When I had to
assist a delivery,” Sreymom recalls, “my body
and knees were trembling. I was sweating and
losing confidence.”
Seeing Sreymom’s difficulties – and her true
potential – a local healthcare worker helped
Sreymom to enrol in the Mondulkiri
Community Health Program. Established by
Caritas Cambodia and supported by Caritas
Australia, the program empowers and trains
local health centre staff in pre- and post-natal
care, safe delivery practices and children’s
health.
The course not only improved Sreymom’s
skills as a midwife, but also gave her
information on broader health issues, which
she could take back to the indigenous women
in her community.
These days, Sreymom delivers one or two
babies each month and is trusted by the
indigenous community. “If we did not have
the program, more pregnant women would
face death,” Sreymom says. “I hope
Australian people will support my
communities more in building awareness in
healthcare, hygiene, nutrition and sanitation.”
Please donate to Project Compassion 2016
and help healthcare workers in isolated areas
of Cambodia gain vital training to improve
the health and wellbeing of the region’s
indigenous women and children.
