This weekend and next, we celebrate First Holy Communion with the children of our parish. What a special day it is for them and their families! To receive Jesus in this holy sacrament is the nour-ishment we all need to live and grow in our relationship with the Lord. As we all need to nourish our bodies daily with proper nutrition

to keep strong and physically healthy, we too need to feed our souls, at least weekly, with the Eucharist to have a healthy spiritual life. Eucharist is the original “soul” food! So, I pray that this First Communion for our children won’t be their last – that they won’t become spiritually malnourished by missing the opportunity to receive Jesus weekly in Holy Communion. I want to thank Patti Dougherty our Director of Religious Education, the catechists, and you parents for preparing these children for this special day. On behalf of the parish staff and St. Thomas parish family, I congratulate our children on the reception of their First Holy Communion, and am delighted to welcome them to the table of the Lord! As we smile at the joy and excitement of our first commu-nicants, perhaps nostalgically remembering our own First Communion Day, maybe it would be a good time to examine our own beliefs and attitudes toward our reception of the Eucharist. Has receiving communion become so routine that we forget the reverence and awe we should feel as we ap-proach our Lord in Holy Communion? Is the Eucharist simply something you get for yourself, or does receiving communion transform you to become the Body and Blood of Christ for others? In recent surveys, sadly a significant number of Catholics do not believe in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist believing the consecrated bread and wine are only symbols of Jesus’ presence. To BE Catholic is to accept by faith that, at their deepest reality, but not in physical character-istics, the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ when they are consecrated at Eucharist. After consecra-tion, the bread and wine still appear as such, but they actually are the Body and Blood of Jesus. As we celebrate the simple faith of our children receiving First Holy Communion this weekend and next, may we have that same childlike faith when we come forward and receive the Body and Blood of Jesus!

Faith and Formation Commission– Adult

Moses is one of the better known leaders of God’s chosen people. One of the last requests Moses made to God was to “set over the commu-nity someone who will be their leader . . . that the Lord’s community may not be like sheep without a shepherd.” (Numbers 27:16-17) The Lord then chose Joshua to succeed Moses as the visible leader of the Israelite community. Following the period of the judges and kings, the Jewish people were fre-quently overrun by foreign powers. For hundreds of years, they waited and hoped for a capable shep-herd. The prophet Micah had prophesied the com-ing of a ruler out of Bethlehem, “a ruler, who is to shepherd my people, Israel.” (Matthew 2:6b) The evangelist Matthew testified that this ruler was Je-sus. At the time Jesus lived, shepherding flocks was still a common practice, so shepherd related termi-nology was also still common. Jesus’ audience would have clearly understood what the gospel writer Matthew meant when he wrote that Jesus took pity on the crowds who followed Him because “they were troubled and abandoned, like sheep without a shepherd.” (Matthew 9:36) Even Jesus referred to Himself as the good shepherd who knew His sheep and who was willing to sacrifice His own life for them. (John 10:11) Everyone in Jesus’ day would have been able to identify a good shepherd compared to a bad shepherd.

C.A.R.E. CORNER

Psalm 145:8-9, 10-11, 12-13

Do you realize this is the description of God in the Old Testament? God wants to love us; He is slow to anger and of great kindness. We have nothing to fear and everything to gain. Let our thoughts and actions always honor that love.

May Labyrinth Walk To honor Mary as Queen of the Universe in the month dedicated to her, St. Thomas is offering a labyrinth walk on Monday, May 13 at 7:00 p.m. Planned for the outdoor labyrinth, the event will be held in the St. Thomas gym in case of rain, and will be facilitated by Patti Essig, who has walked the labyrinth in Chartres Cathedral in France. Walking the labyrinth is a spiritual journey designed to lead you away from the cares of everyday life and lead you closer to God by first emptying your mind of clutter and chatter, then filling it with a receptive open-ness to God’s grace. The flower-like center has been compared to Mary as the Mystical Rose. Join your prayer to hers this month. No prior experience is necessary. To RSVP, or for further information, contact Chari Rosales in the Adult Faith Formation Office at 630.355.8980 x138 or [email protected]

News From All Saints Catholic Academy

Classroom Happenings—Third grade students at All Saints Catholic Academy (ASCA) who completed their study of cursive writing have received their ‘Cursive Licenses’. Modeled after the Illinois Drivers License that all teenagers covet when they turn 16, the ASCA Cursive License gives third grade students a license to write. They are encouraged to write and use their cursive often – in their journals, in their autobi-ography book report projects, in their language arts/reading notes… wherever writing is called for. Celebration of ASCA’s First Communicants All Saints’ second grade students who are receiving the Sacrament of First Holy Communion/Eucharist at their home parishes, will also celebrate at All Saints. They will visit he Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus on May 7, where they will tour and learn more about this beautiful church that is the Diocesan Seat of the Diocese of Joliet. They will then celebrate mass at the school on May 8, where they will be the presenting grade level for this day’s liturgy, as well as have the opportunity to wear their communion dresses and suits. Please pray for these students as they receive and celebrate this Sacrament of Initiation. Pre Kindergarten Open House — All Saints’ recently scheduled Pre Kindergarten Open House was cancelled due to the severe weather experienced in the Naperville area. Please consult your parish bulletin as well as the school website at www.ascacademy.org for a rescheduled date to be announced for this Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. class for four year olds.

Global Medical Brigades

Dear St. Thomas, Thank you so much for your medical donations to Mar-quette’s Global Medical Brigades trip to Nicaragua. The donations helped many of the hundreds that traveled to our clinic between the 10th and 17th of March. I was surprised and inspired to how quickly and generously the St. Thomas community responded. The donations were much appreci-ated by the brigaders collecting and the patients that re-ceived care. Thank you again, God bless.

Families: Take some time to discuss and reflect on the readings.

Youth Ministry Corner There’s been a commercial on TV recently, for Gift of Hope, encouraging viewers to sign up to be organ donors. In the commercial, a woman, Vicki Tulcus, shares her story. After filming the segment, Vicki passed away. At the time of her death, she was on the waiting list for a kidney. I recently heard Vicki’s fiancé share that, the morning after Vicki passed away, he walked into IHOP for breakfast with his family, and the song, “September”, by Earth, Wind, and Fire was playing. The words to the song go something like, “Do you remember the 21st night of September…”. What struck him about the song was that September 21st was the date he and Vicki had set for their wedding. When I hear things like that, I am awe-struck by how intimately God knows us and how much God wants to be a part of our lives. Today’s second reading, from Revelation pro-claims, “Behold, God’s dwelling is with the human race. He will dwell with them and they will be his people. He will wipe every tear from their eyes and there shall be no more death or mourning, wailing or pain, for the old order has passed away….Behold I make all things new.” As we wait for God to make all things new in our lives, to wipe the tears from our eyes, it is comforting to know that we have a God who knows the music that will speak to our heart, who knows our song. Easter Blessings,

Peggy

Walking for Wellness Sign Up Today! The St. Thomas Walking Ministry is sponsoring “Walking for

Wellness — a walk around St. Thomas to raise awareness and funds — on Saturday May 25. The St. Thomas Pastoral Care and Outreach and Social Justice Offices work together to subsidize payments for those in need of counseling due to the situations in their lives in need of healing (individuals, couples, children, families). St. Thomas partners with Samaritan Interfaith which provides services at reduced rates when needed. You can sign up after masses this weekend … or you can sign up on the website. Volunteers for the day of the event are also needed.

You don’t need to golf to enjoy this year’s Third Annual Charity Golf Outing, St. Thomas Holes for Hope — you can come to the dinner and enjoy the silent and live auctions. Those that have participated the last two years have had a wonderful evening. This year’s event will be at Cress Creek Country Club. The dinner will include an open bar social hour. The cost of the dinner remains at $75, the same as last year. There is a new venue this year for golfers, Cress Creek Country Club. Golfing includes access to the driving range and the clubhouse, as well as the 19th hole open bar, dinner, and silent/live auction. The Early Bird Special golfer cost of $175 is available until May 15, so make your reservation soon. After May 15, the cost goes to $200. Last year, St. Thomas CARES provided $57,000 to local families with emergency needs. And the demand continues. This level of service could not exist without the proceeds from the golf outing. Registration will be available after masses this weekend or on the www.holes-for-Hope.com website.

Haiti Immersion Program is returning to St. Thomas — The Haiti Immersion Committee is hosting five Haitian Holy Cross seminarians for a six-week English immersion summer program. Father Mario, the Pastor of the St. Thomas Ste Marie-Madeleine twinning parish will also be participating. This program supports the Haitians in becoming fluent speakers of English. Leadership training is also provided. The training prepares them to better teach English in their various roles in Haiti, to serve on the Leadership Team of their congrega-tion whose meetings are all in English, and to be qualified to be priests/pastors in parishes that twin with par-ishes in the US.

One or Two Host Families Needed — Host families are still needed to open their hearts and homes to one of the seminarians for three weeks or six weeks. The program lasts from June 20 through August 4. It was a mean-ingful experience for all those involved in the prior two summers. Detailed orientation and instructions are pro-vided to families before any commitment is made to ensure that this is the right decision for all involved. Fami-lies interested in more information can contact Tim and Julie Murphy, [email protected], 630.306.2003, or Anne Schultz in the Outreach and Social Justice Office 630.355.8980 x113. An information meeting is set for April 29, 7:30, at St. Thomas. Please email or call to ask any current ques-tions you have or to RSVP for the meeting. Other Volunteers Needed — While educators are available to define the curriculum and help with teaching, additional tutors are needed. Contact Mary Kovach (630.357.5508, [email protected]) if you are interested. It would also be helpful if a number of parishioners could donate airline miles to help with plane tickets. Call or email Julie or Anne (contact information above) to have your questions answered.

2013 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal

Pledge Reminder

With our Love and Prayers Sister Francisca Kivindyo Last June Sr. Francisco visited St. Thomas and gave witness n her work with Sister Florence at Upendo Village in Kenya. She died on April 17 at the age of 50 due to ovarian cancer and related complications. St. Thomas sends prayers to Sr. Francisco’s family and friends and the Upendo Village community. An excerpt from the Upendo Village announcement follows:

While Sr. Francisca was with us, she touched many lives and she will be sorely missed. We celebrate the love and livelihood that she brought to everyone she met - especially the children of Upendo Village. Sr. Francisca loved each child as if they were her own - sharing in their joys, strife, success and struggles. She was a beacon of hope, mother-figure, and best friend to many. Because of her profound dedication to the children, in lieu of flowers, consider donating to the Sr. Francisca Memorial fund, which will be used for the needs of the children of Upendo Village.
