You are invited from your home to participate in the elements of worship preceded in BOLD.

THOUGHT UPON ENTERING “Everything Job holds dear-his property, his family, his wealth, his physical health- has been taken from him. Reduced to suffering and misery, Job laments his circumstances and tries to make sense of what has happened to him. How do we also seek to make meaning of our pain? Ultimately, Job discerns that God is the source of all wisdom, and to turn away from evil is to turn toward the heart of the world, which God made good.”

The Rev. Sarah Are of A Sanctified Art

GATHERING The Holy Spirit calls us together as people of God.

WELCOME

PRELUDE Festival Fanfare and Prelude on “God of Our Fathers” Pat Byers, organ J. Wayne Ker

CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: Come in from the night. All: It is a new day, and this is where love lives. Leader: Take off your coat, let the weight fall off your shoulders; All: For here, you are known. Here, you are loved. Leader: Come in from the rain. All: We can do anything together. We can survive together. Leader: When the world unravels from under your feet- come in. All: Come in. Leader: Come in. All: God is here. You are home. You will never be alone. Leader: Let us worship the God who weaves us together. Amen.

HYMN 177 “I Will Come to You” Sandy Tromm, soprano YOU ARE MINE

CALL TO CONFESSION Leader: When we pass through deep waters or go through times of trial, the Lord our God is with us. With

confidence in God, our creator and redeemer, let us confess our sins against God and neighbor, let us pray. . .

PRAYER OF CONFESSION All: Holy God, we have been angry because we see suffering and we don’t understand. We have been skeptical

because we know heartbreak that doesn’t seem fair. We have withheld love because sacrifice only feels

real when it’s our own. Forgive us for forgetting that you created the heavens and the earth. Forgive us from withholding our pain from you. Forgive us for thinking that we know everything. When the world falls apart around us- When love unravels and life slowly fails- Draw us in. Show us grace; for you gave the wind its weight and you gave our bodies life. Forgive us for forgetting that. Amen.

DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS Leader: Hear the Good News! The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Jesus Christ came into the

world to save sinners. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, that we might be dead to sin and alive to all that is good. Friends in Christ and in Christ alone, we are forgiven. Amen!

WORD God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song.

SONG “There Is a Savior” Sandy Tromm, soprano | Pat Byers, piano Helvering and Nelson

CHILDREN’S MOMENT Todd Bowman

SCRIPTURE Job 28:12-28 Terry & Diane Sinclair, scripture readers

Wisdom’s Value But wisdom, where can it be found; where is the place of understanding? Humankind doesn’t know its value; it isn’t found in the land of the living. The Deep says, “It’s not with me”; the Sea says, “Not alongside me!” It can’t be bought with gold; its price can’t be measured in silver, can’t be weighed against gold from Ophir, with precious onyx or lapis lazuli. Neither gold nor glass can compare with it; she can’t be acquired with gold jewelry. Coral and jasper shouldn’t be mentioned; the price of wisdom is more than rubies. Cushite topaz won’t compare with her; she can’t be set alongside pure gold. But wisdom, where does she come from? Where is the place of understanding? She’s hidden from the eyes of all the living, concealed from birds of the sky. Destruction and Death have said, “We’ve heard a report of her.” God understands her way; he knows her place; for he looks to the ends of the earth and surveys everything beneath the heavens. In order to weigh the wind, to prepare a measure for waters, when he made a decree for the rain, a path for thunderbolts, then he observed it, spoke of it, established it, searched it out, and said to humankind: “Look, the fear of the Lord is wisdom; turning from evil is understanding.”

SERMON “Seeking Understanding When Everything Has Fallen Apart” The Rev. Amanda Maguire Thomas

THANKS The people of God respond to God’s word

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER Annie Pompelia

[…the petitions conclude…] Leader: And now as Christ taught us, we are bold to pray… All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it

is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

OFFERTORY Leader: Friends, there are many ways to respond to God’s goodness and grace. One of those ways is by being

generous. Generous with our time, generous with our talents, and generous with our money when we give to the church. It is our generosity that sustains the ministry of this congregation in Winchester and beyond. Let us give generously.

“Anchor of Hope” Kendall Felix, soloist | Amy Bowman, piano Ellie Holcomb

You can send your offering via USPS [116 S. Loudoun St., Winchester, VA 22601] or you can give electronically using the “Donate” button on our website. Thank you. [https://fpcwinc.org/stewardship/donate]

SENDING God blesses us and sends us to live as God’s people in the world

CHARGE AND BENEDICTION Friends, Jesus has told us who needs us to care. As you go out into God’s world, keep your eyes open for those who are hungry, thirsty, a stranger, naked, sick, or imprisoned. See Christ in them and help them. And remember you are God’s beloved. The Holy Spirit lives in you. Christ’s compassion shines forth in what you do. Live as those who know and have experienced God’s goodness. Go now in peace.

SONG “God Bless America" Sandy Tromm, soprano | Pat Byers, piano Irving Berlin

POSTLUDE “Jerusalem" Pat Byers, organ C. Hubert Parry/Welch
