** PARENTS: School begins at 8:00 a.m. Children will be marked tardy after that time. Please sign up for Infinite Campus to view your child’s grades. If you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher to set up a conference. Our GOTCHA behavior system is going well; please review the manual for a more detailed description. In September, our first field trip will be held at the PAC @ 9:00 – Electricity! We would like to thank all the parents who attended the Fifth Grade 101 Night; it was great!!

Just a heads up: Administration for the CRCT is April 16-20th and the Writing test is March 7, 2012.

Academic Areas

Reading/Spelling: Assignments will be given out by Mrs. Patel & Mrs. Cliett on a weekly basis (reading story, spelling + vocabulary words). Check your child’s agenda for the assignments.Website for spelling practice: www.spellingcity.com** Please read for at least 20 minutes at home to work toward individual AR goals and take an AR test. **Bring library books to school daily.

Language Arts: The students will receive an overview and introduction to reading and writing genres (persuasive, informative, and narrative), effective strategies for reading, listening, speaking, and viewing, writing traits, and steps in the writing process.

Writing Focus: Personal Narrative & a Memoir

Daily skills: writing process, punctuation, eight parts of speech, subject/predicate, paragraph indentions, writing prompts, and characterization. Try this: www.liketowrite.com .

Math: Data Analysis & Graphing (Ch.4), Decimals – Understanding & Operations (Ch.1)

Please review and reinforce at home: multiplication, word-problems (read/find key words), division, and place value.

Science/Social Studies: Science and Social Studies is rotated every four to five weeks. We began w/Science – Constructive and Destructive Forces (Ch.1-3) and Plant and Animal Cells (Ch.8). The upcoming SS Unit will be Civil War & Reconstruction (Ch.5-6).
