In addition, students will continue to utilize all of the strategies they have been practicing throughout the year. While using the Ready books, students will read complex texts from a variety of genres. Students will read closely, annotate, cite text-based evidence, build content knowledge and apply academic vocabulary. Students will continue to revisit all of the priority standards for literary and in- formational texts during this unit. Writers Workshop All of the work students have been doing in Writing throughout the year will prepare them for the New York State English Language Arts Exam. This month, students will continue to learn more strategies to answer short response and extended response questions. The purpose of the short-response questions is to assess a students ability to comprehend and analyze texts. These are single questions in which students use textual evidence to support their own answers to an inferential question. These questions ask the student to make an inference (a claim, position, or con- clusion) based on his or her analysis of the passage, and then provide two pieces of text-based evidence to support his or her answer. Extended-response questions will require comprehension and analysis of ei- ther an individual text or paired texts. Paired texts require students to read and analyze two related texts. Many extended-response questions will ask students to express a position and support it with text-based evidence. For paired texts, students will be expected to synthesize ideas between and draw evidence from both texts. Extended-response questions allow students to demonstrate their ability to write a coherent essay using textual evidence to support their ideas. Readers Workshop

During this month, students will continue to use the Ready ELA books. In addition, students will continue to utilize all of the strategies they have been practicing throughout the year. While using the Ready books, students will read complex texts from a variety of genres. Students will read closely, annotate, cite text-based evidence, build content knowledge and apply academic vocabulary. Students will continue to revisit all of the priority standards for literary and in-formational texts during this unit.

Writers Workshop

All of the work students have been doing in Writing throughout the year will prepare them for the New York State English Language Arts Exam. This month, students will continue to learn more strategies to answer short response and extended response questions.

The purpose of the short-response questions is to assess a student’s ability to comprehend and analyze texts. These are single questions in which students use textual evidence to support their own answers to an inferential question. These questions ask the student to make an inference (a claim, position, or con-clusion) based on his or her analysis of the passage, and then provide two pieces of text-based evidence to support his or her answer.

Extended-response questions will require comprehension and analysis of ei-ther an individual text or paired texts.

During March, students will continue to use the Ready Math books in order to help prepare for the New York State Math Exam. These books provide addition-al practice and problems. The problems in these books are similar to the prob-lems that we expect to be on the NYS Math Exam. In addition, students are working on Chapter 10, Converting Units of Measurement.

The following standards will be addressed:

CC.5.MD.1 Convert customary units of length

CC.5.MD.1 Convert customary units of capacity

CC.5>MD.1 Convert customary units of weight

CC.5.MD.1 Convert among different sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system, and use these conversions in multi-step, real world problems.

CC.5.MD.1 Solve elapsed time problems by converting units of time.
