As the community of Taos once againanticipates the celebration of the feastdays of Santiago y Santana, we are

reminded that as Taoseños we continue to honorour families, friends and neighbors in our tradi-tional manner. During the past several decadespeople have set aside time from busy summerschedules to gather at Taos Plaza at the end of Julyand remember the past, honor the present andencourage the future. For many of us, these feastdays bring back beautiful memories of childhood,of friendships and of loved ones.

STEPHANIE ALISON ROMERO

tephanie Alison Romero hasbeen chosen to represent the

people of Taos as our ambassadorto other communities in New Mexico.

She will rein as Taos Fiesta Queen 2004.On May 13, 1986, Dan and Renée Romero

welcomed their daughter, Stephanie AlisonRomero, into their family. Stephanie grew up inArroyo Seco with her brothers, Shawn andDaniel Romero.

She is a member of the graduating class of2004 from Taos High School, and she will beginher freshman year at the University of NewMexico in the fall. Stephanie plans to enter the

medical field and would like to study to becomea registered nurse. She believes that there is astrong need for nurses, and she would like tofulfill that calling.

It’s her belief that the feast days of Santiago ySantana have become a strong cultural traditionto enable the reunion of families in Taos.Romero said that a young lady chosen to repre-sent the Taos community as its queen shouldprovide a positive role model for the young peo-ple of Taos, but also for our community elders.Stephanie states,“Elders know about traditions,culture and family. Young people need someoneto look up to.”

Romero has done an extensive amount oftraveling. She has visited Spain, Germany,France, Austria, Switzerland, England and Mex-ico. She would like to encourage the young peo-ple of Taos that this is all very possible for eachand every one. Young people need to set goalsand strive to reach them.

Studying flamencodance for the past 10years, she was also a mem-ber of the Taos HighSchool Dance Team andwas named to the All-StarTeam. With this team sheparticipated in the Macy’sThanksgiving Day Paradein November 2003 inLondon, England.

Stephanie would like tothank her parents for alltheir encouragement.“They have supported andencouraged me to doanything I want.”

She also acknowledgesher paternalgrandmother, EllizaRomero, saying,“She taught me about my her-itage and taught me how to be proud to be His-panic.”

Stephanie has the following words of adviceto the younger people of Taos.

“Being Hispanic and aware of your culture isof great importance. Take the time to appreciatewho you are. Think of where you came fromand decide where you can go.”

EDNA THERESE CÓRDOVA

rincesa Edna Therese Córdovais 16 years old and will begin

her senior year at Taos HighSchool in the fall. Edna was born

on Aug. 18, 1987, to Walter Córdova and RubyMiera. Edna grew up in Tucson, Ariz., until the

age of 14, when she cameto Taos after her mother’spassing. Edna says thatshe remembers makingspecial trips to Taos as alittle girl with her motherto visit her family duringthe Taos Fiesta. She haswonderful memories ofwatching the fiestaparade and the prettygirls in the fiesta court.Edna believes that theTaos Fiesta is a greattradition where friendsand family can be united.She says that Taos is abeautiful, small townwith much history, andfeels that the people of

Taos are very friendly.It is Edna’s opinion that the Taos Fiesta Queen

should represent the people of Taos by being agood role model for people of all ages. Shebelieves that a queen should come to the aid ofher community when it is needed. This mayrequire volunteering for work or helping anyonewho needs assistance.

Edna’s plans include graduating from highschool and studying cosmetology. She would like

When speaking of people who have had agreat influence on her life, Edna says that shewould like to acknowledge her mother, Ruby.

“She was my best friend, she was my every-thing.”

Edna states that in her mother’s absence, heraunt Florence Miera “has become my mother.”

Edna enjoys spending time with her family, sheenjoys shopping and talking on the telephone.She advises the young people of Taos to makewise decisions.

KALINA MARÍA THEODORA CÓRDOVA

rincesa Kalina MaríaTheodora Córdova is 17years old and will also begin

her senior year at Taos HighSchool in August. She is the

daughter of Bill Córdova and Francina Córdova,having been born to them on Nov. 6, 1986.Kalina was born in El Paso, Texas, but has lived inTaos for the past five years. Kalina’s familyincludes her brother, William, and her sister,Vanessa.

As a child she would visitthe Taos area during schoolbreaks because most of herfamily lives here. Sheremembers that during thesummer she would visit hergrandparents and theywould take her to TaosPlaza to celebrate at thefiesta. She would watch theparade and would wish thatsomeday she would be ableto ride with the queen. Hermother, Francina, was amember of the Taos FiestaCourt 25 years ago and shehas wonderful memories ofher experience.

Kalina believes that byrepresenting the Taos com-munity in a positive man-ner, she would bring greathonor to her family. Shesays that the Taos traditionsare slowly being lost. AsFiesta Queen it would beher honor to becomeinvolved in trying to restorethe Spanish language. Kalinais fluent in both English andSpanish.

Being a member of the

Taos High School Maríachi program has pro-vided great opportunity for Kalina. Music plays amajor role in her life. She believes that music hasa great impact on the people of any communityand that Taos is no exception. Kalina would liketo see the people of Taos allowed the opportunityto enjoy as many of the Taos musical talents aspossible.

Someday, Kalina would like to attend StanfordUniversity. She would like to study pre-med andpsychology. She also wants to further enhance hermusical abilities.

Evelyn Abeyta, Kalina’s maternal grandmother,has had tremendous influence on hergranddaughter’s development. Kalina states,“Mygrandmother is strong of character, heart andmind.”

She also saves a special place in her heart forTheresa Martínez, her godmother.“She never letsanything bring her down. It’s always great to bearound her.You know you’re around somethinggood.”

She also states,“My mother, Francina Cór-dova, is my best supporter. She lets me experiencemany things, she lets me broaden my horizons.”

Kalina says that she would like to advise theyounger people of Taos to think of what theywould like to do when they are older.“Do not putall your eggs in one basket. There are so manyoptions in life.You should be willing to experi-ence a little bit of everything.”

Grande Hall. Parents Irene and Raymond Párrazreceived the dedication plaque, attended byfriends and family.

At age 15, Rayla remains of the youngest mem-bers of the fiesta court. She began fiesta participa-tion in third grade, as a dancer on Taos Plaza. Atage 13, Rayla sang the“Star Spangled Ban-ner” to open the fes-tivities.

Family photoalbums and interviewswith loved ones reveala young woman inlove with life, hercommunity, familyand people. Individu-als reciprocated byhuge attendance at herfinal services, withcontinued phone calls,visits to the familyhome and poems inher honor.

“She lived in themoment and to thefullest,”her mothersaid.

Friends and Eastern New Mexico Universityofficials, where Párraz attended school, and theEagles’Auxiliary, raise funds for the Rayla PárrazMemorial Scholarship. This year, Jason Garcíareceived the first award. Parents Raymond andIrene currently channel their efforts in assistingwith fund-raising efforts for the scholarships.

Rayla Párraz died Sept. 19, 2003, as the resultof an automobile accident. She majored ingraphic arts and minored in music theater anddance. Past activities included Taos High Mari-

achi, drill team,cheerleading andsinging at CarnegieHall. She took privatepiano and voicelessons and lookedforward to her 21stbirthday and a Dis-ney interview thissummer. Besides herparents, survivorsinclude siblingsRobert Padilla,Denise Párraz Frankand Darren Párrazand grandparentsAlex and GerrieMontaño. Grandpar-ents Vicente and

The Taos Fiestas, steeped in tradition, always honors the community and itsmembers. Two areas in which tribute remains most obvious and fittinginclude the theme and the dedication of the traditional festival.

Fiesta Council president Elma Torres recently announced the 2004 TaosFiestas theme,“Traditions, Culture and Unity”or “Tradiciones, Cultura y

Unidad.”“This is also the theme of the 70th anniversary of the incorporation of the town of

Taos,”Torres said.“We wanted to keep in line with this important occasion, so the FiestaCouncil chose the same theme for the fiestas.”

This year’s dedications honor two deceased individuals who exemplified communityspirit. The Fiesta Council dedicates the 2004 Fiestacitas in memory of late Princesa RaylaPárraz and the fiestas in memory of the late Isaac Gonzales.

Marcelina Párraz preceded her in death. Auntsand uncles, two nephews and 21 cousins roundout the family group.

“We plan to bury her ashes on Aug. 5, the dayGod gave her to us. She’ll be buried next to mysister, her aunt Nancy, in Arroyo Seco,”concludesmother Irene Párraz.

The family of deceased First State Bankregional and local president Isaac Gonzalesalso received a plaque commemorating

dedication of the 2004 fiestas in his memory.“First State Bank always celebrates the fiestas,”

says Erlinda Gonzales, Isaac’s widow.“Isaac alwayswore his ribbon shirt to the bank during Fiestaoccasions. However, when he worked at Tío Vivo,he wore casual clothes and his Lions’ cap.”

Erlinda Gonzales shares some Fiesta memo-ries. The couple enjoyed some fiesta memories oftheir own — eating hamburgers with green chile“and the works”at the late Lupe Medina’s boothand the Our Lady of Guadalupe stand. Theysought out other food operations for corn on thecob.

“He’d work at Tío Vivo near the time of theparade. After the parade, we’d meet at the ride.Then, we’d go relax and get out of the hot sun.”They went to the outdoor section of Ogelvie’s tocheck out the action on the Plaza.

Gonzales, son of the late Isaac and María Car-men Gonzales, grew up in El Prado with threebrothers and one sister. He received his Bachelorof Arts degree in accounting and business from

New Mexico Highlands University in 1971. Threechildren, Mark (Carmella), Andrew (Roberta)and Francine survive their father. The three Gon-zales grandchildren include Isaac, Matthew andJamison Gonzales.

The Gonzales children share memories of theirfather and mentor. Their comments all center onIsaac’s love of Tío Vivo, the Fiesta ride for chil-dren.

“Dad was a big advocate for the Lions,”explains oldest son Mark.“Since my sons werebabies, they’d always go for a ride, but always onGrandpa’s shift. They’ll go again this year. We’llstick to tradition and go during his shift. Dad willbe there in spirit.”

Andrew remarks on his father’s unwaveringdedication.“No matter how sick he was, he’d takehis shift. He’d said he had to be there for the kidsand not to let anyone down. Dad also felt that innot helping, this would place a burden on some-one else.”

Besides Tío Vivo memories, daughterFrancine, a 2000 fiesta princesa, recalls her par-ents’ strong sense of pride and support toward herrole of cultural observations. She adds,“Hewanted all the kids to ride. He encouraged theLions to keep the ride affordable for the littleones. Dad would ask kids what horse they wantedto ride. He’d actually lift them up and down ifthey were too small to get on and off by them-selves.”

The Lions Club plans to raise funds to refur-bish the horses in memory of a man whose fasci-nation with Tío Vivo began as a little boy andcontinued throughout his lifetime.

Fiestas, honoring tradition, culture and unity,also honors the memories of Rayla Párraz andIsaac Gonzales in 2004.

Celebrating Taos Fiestas

With the advent of the TaosFiestas, the names of SaintsJames and Saint Anne, areoften mentioned as its patronsaints. Much has been written

about the role of Saint James in history, literatureand song but Saint Anne is often relegated to apassing paragraph at the end of articles on theTaos Fiestas. This year, Saint Anne, the maternalgrandmother of Jesus, gets top billing.She is the focal point or spindlearound which many threadswind.

There is an ancientSpanish lullaby thatused to be sung herein Taos. As motherswould rock theirbabies, they wouldsing of the pastorallives of the HolyFamily. Of course, bylocal definition thiswould not onlyinclude Jesus, Josephand Mary, but thematernal grandpar-ents of the baby, too.Tradition holds thatMary was thedaughter of Joachimand Hannah, or SanJoaquín and SantaAna, as they arecalled in Spanish.

Part of the locallullaby calls for hisgrandparents to lull the baby Jesus to sleep:Señora Santa Ana, Señor San Joaquín, arrullen alNiño que quiere dormir. [Belovèd Saint Anna,Joachim do keep this, the little Baby who dothwant to sleep.] The ditty then goes on to invokeSaint Anne by saying, Señora Santa Ana, toca tucampana, porque el Niño llora por una manzana.[Belovèd Saint Anna, ring the bell on highbecause, for an apple, the baby doth cry.] Then itis the child’s grandfather who is invoked: SeñorSan Joaquín, toca tu violín porque el Niño llora por

un bolantín. [Joachim, your fiddle, play without adread, for the baby’s crying for a spool of thread.]The idyllic lullaby goes on to talk about howMary washed the baby’s diapers and Joseph hungthem out to dry.

So often, as it is in the case of this lullaby, apoc-ryphal threads of local lore are woven into thefabric of ancient knowledge. For example, it isdoubtful that fiddles existed in the years beforeChrist. The truth of the matter is that once theirdaughter Mary was dedicated to the service of thetemple at the age of three, Joachim and Anna

died of broken hearts just six monthsthereafter. Mary grew up under the

protection of the priestSimeon and the Prophetess

Anna, within the mostsacred portion of thetemple that wasreserved only for themale priesthood. Thedaughter of Annewas breaking withtraditional Jewishcustom.

The life of SaintAnne was a difficultone despite the factthat she had marriedinto a rich familythat owned flocksand herds. Her hus-band was SaintJoachim, which is aname meaning “Yah-weh prepares.”Hisown father wouldhave been namedHeli and accordingto Luke the Evange-

list, this would translate from the Hebrew as Eli-achim or Jeho-achim.

Adding to the litany of stories told of the holycouple is one taken from the writings of BishopJacobus Voragine in the 13th century. In his book,“The Golden Legend,”he talks about how SaintJoachim and Saint Anne were distraught becausethey had been married many years without beingable to conceive children. Joachim, desperate for

help, went out to seek the advice of the templepriests. There, the priest Ruben advised him todepart from that holy area since it was obviousthat Joachim was not favored by God. Sadly didJoachim leave and he isolated himself in themountains to pray. It was there that he was visitedby the angel Gabriel who told him that even inher old age, his wife Anne was to conceive adaughter.

Filled by holy rapture, Joachim rushed back tothe city where Anne, who had also been visited bythe angel, was waiting for her husband. Sheleaned against the city gate and clasping herhands with joy she told told him of the messageof the angel who had said,“Hannah, the Lord haslooked upon thy tears; thou shalt conceive andgive birth and the fruit of thy womb shall beblessed by all the world.”

Joachim leaned toward her and gave his wife asmall kiss on her cheek. It was during whatbecame known as “the chaste kiss” thatshe who was destined to be known as“The Immaculate Conception”came into being.

Tradition has it that the parents of theBlessed Virgin first lived in Galilee andthen settled in Jerusalem where they died andwere buried. A church that came to beknown across time as St. Mary, St. Maryubi nata est, St. Mary in Probatica, HolyProbatica and St. Anne, was built duringthe 4th century on the site ofthe house of St. Joachim andSt. Anne. Their tombs werehonored there until theclose of the 9th century,when the church was convertedinto a Moslem school. The cryptwhich formerly contained theholy tombs was rediscoveredon March 18, 1889.

St. Anne is honoredacross the world inmany com-munities.She has

been known as the Patroness of Mothers, thePatroness of Housewives and the Patroness ofMiners. The first two titles are obvious given herrole in the formation of The Church. But whywould she be known as the Patroness of Miners.

This is a symbolic title that equates St. Annewith the personification of mines which yieldforth the precious metals silver and gold. In thiscase, her daughter, the Virgin Mary, is the silverand her grandson, Jesus, is the gold.

In taking a close look at the life of Saint Jamesthe Greater, one has to wonder about quotationsthat begin with such words as:“O Sovereign Lordour God, condemn me not, defiled with a multi-tude of sins: for, behold, I have come to this Thydivine and heavenly mystery, not as being worthy;but looking only to Thy goodness, I direct myvoice to Thee: God be merciful to me, a sinner; Ihave sinned against Heaven, and before Thee, andam unworthy to come into the presence of this

Thy holy and spiritual table,upon which Thine only-begot-ten Son, and our Lord JesusChrist, is mystically set forth asa sacrifice…”

pretty high-sounding words from a boy whogrew up among plain old fisher-folk. James,together with his little brother, John, were tobecome apostles of their cousin, Jesus. Jameswould be the first apostle who would be mar-tyred. His little brother Johnwould be the only apostle notmartyred.

After the Ascension of Jesusinto Heaven, the apostles sataround in fear having been toldsimply to wait in an upperchamber. It was there that theyreceived the gift of tonguesfrom the Holy Spirit. This is stillcelebrated as The Feast of Pen-tecost. They went off to preachthe good news of salvation tothe far corners of the world. Tothe Apostle James fell the lot ofpreaching at Finisterre; the endof the earth, where Spain innow located.

Tradition says that SaintJames landed in Andalucía in38 A.D. and that he had verylittle initial success in convert-ing the local people. It wasn’tuntil James and his eight con-verts were praying by the Ebro River once daythat they heard angels singing and had a vision ofthe Virgin Mary atop a pillar of jasper.

James returned to Jerusalem where he wasbeheaded by King Herod Agrippa. His body wasdeposited in a deerskin sack by his disciples andcarried back to Spain. Tradition holds that hisdisciples arrived in Spain after only seven days onthe sea. When they removed the body of James

from the sack though, they found that his headwas miraculously re-attached to the body. Theylay the body of the apostle upon a stone and itimmediately melted like wax around him; a suresign that James was meant to remain on Spanishsoil.

The body of James was deposited in an aban-doned crypt and a little chapelwas erected over it. In the year711 the Moors crossed fromnorth Africa to occupy SpanishChristian lands. They were tooccupy much of the IberianPeninsula for over 700 years.One hundred and two yearsafter the initial Moorish inva-sion, a shepherd who was outtending his flocks, heard angelssinging and he saw a shiningstar. He reported the event toBishop Theodomir of Padrón.The rediscovery of the body ofthe Apostle of Spain strength-ened Spanish resolve to drivethe non-Christians out ofSpain. The body of Santiagoled them to believe that theywere the new chosen people.The burial place of Saint Jameswas to become known as Santi-ago de Compostela (St. James

of the field of the star) and became a place ofpilgrimage.

Because their names are so often linkedtogether, many people assume that Saint Anneand Saint James were married to each other. Theydidn’t even live during the same time period,historically speaking. She lived B.C. He lived A.D.Yet, their stories of sacrifice and faith continue toserve as glowing examples for all people today.
