FIDS’s STEM Fair Expo. FIDS’s Third Annual STEM Fair Expo will take place in the Neff Family Library on Friday, April 22, 2016. Your child’s classroom teacher will be providing you with additional information, but now is the time to start planning. Please note the following:

    • Grades Early Learning – 1: Each class in grades Early Learning – Grade 1 will complete one group STEM Project. • Grades 2 – 5: Each student in Grades 2 – 5 is required to complete his/her own STEM Project.

All projects are due on Wednesday, April 20, 2016. Parents may assist their children with their individual STEM projects (Grades 2 – 5); however, part of the judging will be based on each student’s ability to explain his/her project and discuss the results. As such, it is essential for every child to be actively involved in all aspects of the STEM project. Grade Level Parent Luncheons. We will be hosting our spring parent luncheons by grade level once again this year. Parents are invited to join their child’s class for lunch as delineated below. The fee is $10 per parent, payable directly to Chef Richard (R Catering) on the day of the luncheon.

Good News: Mansur Parking Lot. Fisher Island Day School will be allowed continued use of the Mansur Parking Lot (the parking lot on Terminal Island where we park the school buses) during the seawall reconstruction. The drop-off and pick-up location will be moved from the southeast corner of the parking lot to the northwest corner of the parking lot (near the security officer’s booth). Thanks go to the staff of the Fisher Island Community Association (FICA) for brokering this arrangement. We appreciate your cooperation and flexibility during this temporary phase. ERB (Educational Records Bureau) Testing Dates. The annual administration of the ERB Comprehensive Testing Program will occur May 2 - 6 for Grades 1 and 2, and May 9 - 13 for Grades 3, 4, and 5. To ensure for a successful administration of the test, please adhere to the following:

    • Unless your child is ill, please make sure he/she attends school each day during the testing window. Students who are absent will be required to make-up the subtests they miss, prolonging the standardized testing process.

    • Make sure your child has a good night’s sleep each night and a nutritious breakfast each morning preceding the test dates.

    • Test taking is one of life’s realities. Please present the test as an important opportunity for your child to demonstrate his/her knowledge and talent. Encourage them to do their best, but not to the point of creating fear or anxiety.

    • Following each day’s testing, we will provide time for students to engage in enjoyable learning activities. Welcome Marc Linden Ionin! I am pleased to announce the arrival of baby, Marc Linden Ionin, who was born on April 11, 2016. Marc is the latest addition to the Ionin family, joining parents, Russell & Tatiana, and brothers (FIDS students), Brian and Nolan. We wish Marc and the entire Ionin family our very best.

FIDS Summer Camps—Specialty and Traditional. FIDS is pleased to offer four week-long Specialty Camp Programs this summer. FIDS has partnered with leading children’s organizations in our community to bring these intimate recreational/learning experiences to our campus. Specialty Camps are being offered in addition to our traditional (Full Circle) camp program. Each week, from June 6 – July 1, 2016, we will provide students with immersive experiences in particular areas of interest. Specialty Camp Programs capitalize on the Maker Movement, where students are inspired to “create” in a collaborative setting with their peers, learn, and have fun. As a convenience to our families, all Specialty Camp Programs will be held at Fisher Island Day School in the Neff Family Library. The Full Circle Camp will operate June 13 – July 29, 2016. The 2016 Specialty and Traditional Camp Program brochures and registration forms are appended to this newsletter. Best regards, Michael Bell Head of School
