FibroLaser is sensitive to both convectionand radiation heat. As a result the systemis able to detect fires extremely quicklyand with precise localization – combinedwith maximum security against error andthe elimination of false alarms.

Robust sensor technology enables usageeven under adverse conditions.

The system – speed plus precision equals security.

Cable tray or road tunnel – so different the

installations, so clear the demands on fire

protection: quick detection and localization

of the fire source – and minimizing the time

until the fire alarm confirms.

FibroLaser™ is a leader in both regards. Thus

the system satisfies the central requirements

to prevent damage to lives and equipment

and to protect your business operation.

Complete information for the fire department – through rapid signal transmission

When the fire department and disasterprotection unit arrive at a fire, every second counts. Therefore, a precise overview of the situation has to be available immediately.

FibroLaser provides exact information about the location, size and direction of a fire and relays this information overa standard interface to the alarm andoperating systems.

Individual layout – with VdS-tested software

The more exact the positioning of cablesand the configuration of the control unitare laid-out to the conditions of the loca-tion, the quicker and more reliable thedetection is, in case of fire. With special,VdS-tested design and calculation soft-ware, Siemens produces ideal conditionsfor doing just that.

Application know-how: the design software.

The FibroLaser™ heat detection cable is particularly suitable for fire protection in tunnels, cabletrays, on conveyor belts and in parking garages.

Your benefits with FibroLaser™

• High spatial resolution – up to 0.5 m

• Quick detection – through cycle times of 15 s

• High reliability also under harshconditions – e. g., dampness, corrosion, fast arising heat, draftor strong winds of up to 10 m/s

• Undiminished precision also during electromagnetic inter-ference – such as in cable trays or train tunnels

The principle – temperature sensoring with light

The system components of FibroLaser™are the control unit and attached glassfiber sensor cable. The control unit sendsa laser beam through the cable. The glassfiber reflects this light and scatters it back – split into “Stokes” and “Anti-Stokes”signals (Raman Effect).

While Stokes signals have nearly the samesignal strength at all temperatures, thisvalue rises proportionally to the tempera-ture with Anti-Stokes signals.

By comparing Stokes and Anti-Stokes the control unit now reliably calculatesthe temperature and position of a heatsource.

FibroLaser™ uses the characteristics of glass fiber

cables for a highly precise temperature sensor

and fire localization system. The criteria that will

ultimately sound an alarm can be individually

defined – based on on-site conditions.

7

The zoning – 128 sections and more on one cable

On one sensor cable of up to 4 km inlength 128 zones and more can be set up – for instance for ventilation, cam-eras, emergency lights, traffic light con-trol or intervention.

These zones can be staggered one afterthe other, or partitioned in parallel. Everyzone may be set with an individual alarmparameter.

The alarm – configure parameters individually

On-site conditions determine the parameters within which an alarm should be activated.

FibroLaser allows three different criteriahere: surpassing a defined maximumtemperature – deviating too far from theaverage temperature of a zone – or expe-riencing a rapid temperature increase.

Intelligently implemented: the Raman Effect

Physical values such as temperature, pressure or ex-pansion can have such an effect on glass fiber that thetransmission of light is locally changed in the fiber. Thelight is dispersed and as a result dampened. In this waythe location at which an external physical effect occurscan be determined – e.g., the glass fiber cable can be employed as a linear sensor.

The Raman Effect is ideally suited to temperature measure-ment with optical fiber made from quartz glass. Here lightscatters with microscopically small density fluctuations. These fluctuations are smaller than the wavelengths. Besides the elastic scatter share (Rayleigh Scatter) – in thesame wavelengths as the light beamed in – the backscatteralso contains parts of light of different wavelengths (RamanScatter). This correlates with the molecular oscillation andtherefore with the local temperature.

On alert, even with the smallest discrepancies

Thanks to semiconductor laser diodes FibroLaser™ can measure these effects in glass fibers up to 4 km in length.Through optimization of temporal and local resolution, even slight temperature changes – such as an increase of a few degrees Celsius per minute – can be reliably andexactly displayed.

In this way FibroLaser is especially suitable for fire detectionunder extreme environmental conditions – in other words, wherever conventional detectors would be overextended.

Safe flow of traffic: FibroLaser™ in road tunnels

More and more road traffic will be moved„underground“ – in order to create moreefficient connections and to relieve theburden on cities. Tunnels and galleriesare therefore the nerve centers of ourmobile society.

People, vehicles and infrastructure must be protected here against fire withmaximum reliability. FibroLaser™ alreadyrenders reliable worldwide service insome of the most important tunnels, day for day:

Quick detection and precise localiza-tion of the source of fire – for the selective activation of the appropri-ate systems from video cameras andventilation systems to the extinguish-ing system.

Ascertainment of the size and direc-tion of the fire – information, which iscrucial for fast and appropriate actionby the fire department.

Applications – experience around the world.

Examples from practical experience

• Mont Blanc Tunnel (France)

• San Bernardino Tunnel(Switzerland)

• Rennsteig Tunnel (Germany)

• Lecco Tunnel (Italy)

• Funing Tunnel (China)

• KP Expressway (Singapore)

With FibroLaser™you don’t lose

time: An open fire is located in less than 1 min with

a resolution of less than 3 m.

Locating danger and vehicles: FibroLaser in train tunnels

In these times of high-speed traffic thenumber of train tunnels have increasedworldwide – and now include connec-tions under the sea. Millions of peopleand thousands of tons of goods passthrough them daily.

FibroLaser not only identifies the sourcesof fires in train tunnels, but also deliversquick information about where a strandedtrain can be found.

The functions in particular:

Exact localization of the source of afire – only then surveillance cameras, ventilation systems or air hatches canbe activated at the correct location.

Determination of the fire’s directionand size, so that the fire departmentcan intervene quicker and with moreprecision.

Tough, even in the smallest corner: FibroLaser for cable trays and conveyor belts

Whether transporting material, data or electricity – cable trays and conveyorbelts belong to the vital infrastructure in buildings and facilities.

The problem: precisely this equipment is often difficult to access; in cable trayselectromagnetic interference must be taken into account; and when a fire breaks out, it gets very hot very quickly.

As a robust, flexible system FibroLaser is optimally suited for these difficult applications:

Electromagnetic interference impairsoperation just as little as dust or dirt.

Cold and heat cannot harm glass fibertechnology.

Depending on the application field, FibroLaser can be fitted with metallicor non-metallic cables.

Security in obscured areas: FibroLaser for parking garages and halls

Fires in sprawling facilities such as park-ing garages, storage halls or conferencerooms can begin in many places – in theceiling, in the walls, perhaps even underthe floor.

But what is at first invisible has to be reliably recognized and located, in orderto prevent the fire from growing rapidlyand causing resulting massive damage.

Here, FibroLaser assumes the function of

reliably registering even slight temperature increases.

sounding an alarm when defined tolerance limits are reached. • Kampii Bus Terminal
