OFFICE OF THE REGISTRARSTUDENT ENROLLMENT AND CHARACTERISTICS

Each year since 1952, the fall residence credit enrollment has surpassed theprevious year. I n the fall of 1968, 35,242 students were enrolled in degreeprograms. This represents a 107% increase during this sixteen year period. Another2,779 students were enrolled for credit courses in University extension centers.During the year 1968-69, a total of 48,875 students enrolled in credit andprofessional programs. An additional 3,670 participated in extramural certificateprograms culminating in a total enrollment of 52,545 students.

Requests for data on our student population are continually received fromvarious sources within the University, governmental agencies, individuals, newsmedia, planning groups, industrial agencies, and publishing houses. Answers to thewide variety of these inquiries can generally be found from the following data, combined with the information contained in other sections of this report. Thetables included in this section describe in detail certain aspects of the studentpopulation, such as, class enrollments, marital status and enrollments by field inselected units. Consistent data definitions are maintained from year to year so thatmeaningful comparisons can be made.

Prescribed procedures were followed in accounting for the number of studentsregistered at the University. The year included the 1968 Summer Half-term, the1968-69 Fall Term, the 1968-69 Winter Term, and the 1969 Spring Half-term. Onlythose students who remained beyond the total refund limit in any period areincluded. Postgraduate registrations are considered to be short-course enrollments ifless than four weeks in the summer or spring, or less than eight weeks during theregular term. Any apparent numerical discrepancies in the total are the result ofstudents enrolled in two or more units and counted but once in the net total. AllRackham students are counted in the unit of their field of specialization.

Extramural students in certificate programs in Group III are counted in thesummary only. All other groups mentioned in the summary are included in thetable on geographical distribution of students since they constitute a service ofinstruction to the people of the state, the nation, and other areas.
