ルイスの原稿類について

一九二〇年代のアメリカ文学を代表する作家の一人、ハリィ・シンクレア・ルイス（頃碧蔓ωβ9巴厩霊（一ω）（一八
八五年～一九五一年）は、その作品の執筆にあたって、綿密な調査ないしは資料蒐集を行ない、その傍ら詳細なメモを
作成してから仕事にとりかかるというタイプの作家として知られているが、残されている原稿類をもとに、一例とし
てルイス晩年の長編小説『神を求める人』（国ぎO＆南塁ぎ鳩）（一九四九年）の揚合を調べてみると、まず、その「構
想」がタイプ原稿（カーボン・コピー）で二〇六枚、「人物と人名の一覧表」がタイプ原稿（カーボン．コビー）で一〇枚、
その執筆の際に用いられた「ノートおよぴ梗概」が三一八枚、当初『隣人』と題されたタイプ草稿のカーボン．コピ
ーが六二三枚、『神を求める人』と改題されたオリジナル・タイプ原稿が六三七枚、最終タイプ原稿のカーボン．コ
ピーが五四三枚、印刷所に渡されたタイプ原稿が五四一枚といった具合であり、また、この作品のために集めた資料
として、その兄サミュエル・ウィリアム・ポンド（留日go一憂≡置日娼○且）（一八○八年碇一八九一年）と共にスウ族イ
ンディアンにキリスト教を伝えた会衆派の伝道師ギディオン・ホリスタi・ポンド（O一α08匡o臣馨R勺o区）（一八一

〇年～一八七八年）の日記が、カーボン・コピーで五二六枚、これに関するノートが一六一枚、その他のノートが六一
枚あり、総計では三六二六枚にも達する。
ところでルイスの原稿類の大部分は、ルイスの母校であるイェール大学のバイネキi稀観本図書館（ωo言9ぎ園碧o
切8犀犀げβ曙）に納められ、その数は、原稿のコピー、手紙類を含めて四五〇点にも及ぶが、それらの原稿類は、主
としてルイス自身が生前、一九三七年頃から一九四五年頃にかけて寄贈したものや、ルイスの死後、ルイスの遺産の
中から譲渡されたものから成る彪大なコレクションである。私事にわたるが、筆者はイェール大学の客員研究員とし

て、そのコレクションの一部を閲覧する機会があり、帰国後、その簡単な紹介をしておいた。もとより、この毘大な
コレクションの全貌を明らかにするには、多年にわたる研究・調査が必要であろうが、幸い、その原稿類の目録力ー
ドが図書館内に用意され、利用者に公開されているので、少なくとも、その目録力ードによって原稿類の検索が可能
である。
一般に、ある作家について論ずる揚合、その研究対象とされるべきものは、原則として作品の形で出版されている
ものに限られるが、その作家の創作の秘密もしくは手の内、たとえて言えば、その作家の舞台裏を知ろうとすれば、
作品の形をなすに至らなかった習作ないしは下書き、メモなど、能うる限りの材料に目を通すことが必要になろう。
さて、シンクレア・ルイスが最初に試みた小説の構想とされるものは、二二枚のメモの形で残されている「子供た
ちの子供たち」（．．目訂O崔今魯、。。9まおロ、、）（一九〇九年）（大部分はペンもしくは鉛筆書き、一部はタイプ）である
が、この小説の腹案は、ルイスの蔵書のひとつ、バルザックの『幻滅』（切巴旨ρ謡ミ訟§砺専ミ§晦）の裏扉の見返し

に書きつけられたメモ「父親たち」（、．↓ぎ閃鉢訂嵩、、）がもとになっている。この「父親たち」を読んでみると、ルイ
スが、一八二〇年から一九一〇年にかけての、五代ないし六代の親子関係（父と息子の関係）を扱って、代々の父親
が、自分の父親よりも深い理解を息子には示そうと願いながら、結局、息子と衝突せざるを得ない事情を、全体で七
章、語数は三万ないし三万五千語の予定で書いてみようと考えていた．｝とがわかる。
このような「父親たち」の腹案は、殆どそのまま「子供たちの子供たち」に引きつがれ、基本的な設定としては、
父親の無理解に苦ルんだ息子が、将来、自分が父親になったときには自分の息子に理解を示そうと決意しながら、い
ざ実際に父親になってみると、息子の行動を是認できず、息子と衝突してしまい、父親の無理解に苦しんだその息子
は、将来、自分の息子には理解のある父親になろうと決意する、といった具合に、果てしない堂々めぐりが続く筋書
きになっている。
この創作メモ「子供たちの子供たち」について特筆すべきことは、厳格な父親のもとで育った不肖の息子ルイスの、
父親に対する根強い葱懸と、父と息子における宿命的な親子関係のむずかしさに対するルイスの認識がうかがわれる
点であり、また、父と息子の対立が思想的な対立に発展していく過程で、労働問題が取り上げられている点である。
ルイスは大学生時代にアプトン・シンクレア（d讐900首9巴同）（一八七八年～一九六八年）の主宰する共同生活団ヘリ
コン・ホール（＝魯8昌国巴一）に参加したり、また、一時（一九一一年前後に）、社会党に入党していて、社会主義運動
に関心を持ち、いつの日にか「労働小説」を書きたいと意欲を燃やしていたが、そのようなルイスの関心がすでにこ
の創作メモに見えていることは興味深い。

つぎに、これもタイプ原稿のまま残されている小説の習作「ベニシエイの美男ビル」（．．ω臼暮β二ω旨9田o巳9曙．、）
（一九一〇年）を取り上げてみよう。この習作は「ジギスマンド・スルイス著」（身ω喧ωヨ目α盟〇三ω）、「ボブズ・
バブル社発行」（目ぎω3σω自昌げ一〇〇9）ということになっている一四枚のメモで、副題に「・マンスとミステリィ
の小説」（、、＞20＜o一〇｛閑oヨ塁8嘗q旨巻富蔓、、）とある。
この習作の構成は、それぞれの章がタイプ用紙一枚ほどの長さにしかならない、二二の章に、これもタイプ用紙一
枚に納められた「エピ・iグ」、「ポストリュード（後奏）」から成り、その内容は、ベニシエイ伯爵の御曹子、美男で
女性たちに人気のあるウィリアムが、王女ダンデライン（90ギ言8器∪費＆豊ま）を恋するが、身分の違いもあり、
また、王女ダンデラインは、アメリヵの百万長者メネンス・トイレット・パウダi（目窪需房碗9簿勺o毒qR）と婚
約していて、その思いを遂げられず、悶悶としている。ところが、そこへ王女ダンデラインから「身の危険が迫った
ので、助けに来てほしい」という電話があり、これを聞いたウィリアムは、ピストルをポケットに忍ばせて王宮にむ
かい、王女を説得して、アメリカはカリフォルニア州のターホー湖畔に逃げ出し、王女の婚約者パウダーの邪魔も入
るが、それを斥けてウィリアムは、王女にプ・ポーズし、二人は目出度く結ばれる、という話である。
以上の簡単な紹介からも明らかなように、習作「ベニシエイの美男ビル」は、まことに他愛のない戯作としか言い
ようのない代物であるが、「颯刺作家」ルイスの片鱗と、「リアリスト」ルイスの中に根強く残っていたロマンス志向
もしくは中世趣味が、この習作の中に見られることは注意されてよい。王女の危急を知らされてウィリアムが、ピス
トルをポケットに忍ばせて王宮に駆けつける、というあたりには、なんとなくドン・キホーテ的なものが感ぜられ、
それはルイスの代表作『本町通り』（ミ＆§吻ミ8（一九二〇年）のキャロル・ケニコット（9邑ズ窪三8菖）や、『ア
・ウスミス』（』ミ。§§滴｝）（一九二五年）のマーティン・ア・ウス、・・ス（零胃試p》霞〇一＜ωヨ一跨）の理想主義の中に引き

つがれて行く、と考えることもできる。
周知のように書物の形で最初に出版されたルイスの作品は、ルイスが「トム・グレアム」（．円oヨO声訂ヨ．）という
筆名で発表した児童読物『ハイクと飛行機』（霞簿馬§載き馬』ミ。黛§恥）（一九一二年）であるが、この作品に関しては、
出版元のストークス社（望oぎω）と取りかわした三頁の契約書（一九一二年、四月一八日付）が保存されているだけで、
その原稿は残っておらず、またルイスの処女長編小説『わが社のレン氏』（oミミsミ機§§）（一九一四年）以下、一
九一〇年代にルイスが発表した五点の作品についても、その原稿類は保存されていない。〔ただし、ルイスの最初の
妻グレイス・ヘガー・ルイス（○タ8匡おσQ段い。＆。・）が協力してテキサス大学の人文科学研究センターに集められた
グレイス。ヘガー・ルイス目シンクレア。ルイス・コレクションには、『鷹のゆくえ』（『ミ↓ミ鴇剣ミも葭a弩澄）（一
九一五年）の草稿の最後の一枚、また、『仕事』（↓ぎ、＆）（一九一七年）の廃棄された原稿の最初の一枚が保存されて

る。これは、グレイスが稀に見るような始末屋であったお蔭で、辛うじて残った原稿の一部であろう。〕
一九二〇年代のルイスの作品に話を移すと、問題作『本町通り』の原稿は、バイネキー稀観本図書館ではなく、グ
レイス・ヘガi・ルイス睦シンクレア・ルイス・コレクションに納められ、タイプ原稿で二六四枚、一枚目の左肩に

の文字が見える。また、同コレクシ日ンには、一九一八年の夏、グレイスが紙屑籠の中に捨てられていたところを拾

い出した、「本町通りの主題」（、目ぎ目田旨9目巴ロω霞8一．）と題する手書きのメモ五枚が保存されている。
『本町通り』以後の作品に関しては、『バビット』（切＆ミ馬）（一九二二年）以下、ルイスの作品の原稿類がほぼ完全
にバイネキー稀観本図書館に保存されていると見てよい。ただし、『アロウスミス』の原稿については、同図書館に
保存されているオリジナル原稿（五三九枚）とならんで、上述したグレイス・ヘガー・ルイス“シンクレア・ルイス・
コレクションにもオリジナル・タイプ原稿（八五一枚）が保存されており、こちらの原稿には多量の鉛筆による書き込
みがあり、また、同コレクシ目ンには、右肩に「廃棄」と書き込まれた、『ア・ウスミス』の廃棄された草稿の第一

枚目が保存されている。
以上でルイスの原稿類の紹介・解説は終え、以下に別添資料としてバイネキー稀観本図書館に保存されているルイ
スの原稿類の一覧表を掲げることにしたい。この資料は、同図書館の目録力ードを閲覧して書きとめたメモをもとに
している。それぞれの資料には、仮に番号をつけてみたが、同じ原稿のコピーは独立した項目として数えることをせ
ず、原稿とまとめて同じ番号の中に含めることとした。このような資料でも、現代アメリカ文学を研究している同学
の士にとって、なにほどかの参考になれぱ幸いである。
なお、ここで、ルイス関係の貴重な資料の閲覧を許可して下さったバイネキー図書館のご好意に対して感謝の意を
