At the time of the crash, thefamily were heading back hometo Stanger Manor after a familyvisit in Durban.

“My daughter loved life andwas my pillar of strength. Shewas the apple of my eye. I don’tknow how I am going to copewith this tragedy.
“We were such a close family, that for the past month, we allslept in the same room. She was
going to take over the family busi-ness,” said the distraught father.
“The fact that Sharania sur-vived such a devastating crashshows that she is a miracle baby.”

YET another accident occurred, onwhat is now becoming a “notorious accident spot” on the old Tinley Manorroad heading towards Shakaskraal onThursday last week.
Reports from the scene indicatethat the driver of truck failed to negotiate a bend near the railway stationand veered off the road.
The truck landed on its side acrossthe railway lines and burst into flames.
Emergency Medical Rescue Services personnel attended the scene together with the KwaDukuza Fire andEmergency Services.
The driver of the truck escapedwith minor injuries. However, according to concerned resident, Manilal Sarjoo, this is not the first accident to occur at the dangerous bend, wherecountless lives have been lost.
He questioned what authoritiesare doing to solve the problem. Sarjoosaid various measures could be put into place to curb accidents.
“There are no boards to warn drivers of the sharp bend ahead, no speedhumps to reduce speed and no propercrash barriers to prevent vehicles fromending up on the railway lines.
“How many more lives need to belost? In this case no lives were lost, but what would have been the consequence if a train was on its way, anddrove into this truck?”

This comes after eight armed rob-bers walked into Clicks at the UshakaMall last week and made off withbaby food.
According to reports, there werefour men and four women in thegang, each brandishing firearms. After robbing the store, they got
into a VW Golf GTi with RichardsBay registration plates and a PoloPlaya with an Empangeni registra-

Officers AlphaMsibi, Vanessa Gov-ender and Denver Marimuthu re-sponded.
When the officers were drivinginto the mall parking lot, they no-ticed the Polo Playa and gave chase.
Officer Marimuthu said they couldsee the Golf and followed the PoloPlaya. “During the chase, the driverfailed to negotiate a bend at the inter-section of Balcomb and Chief AlbertLuthuli Streets,” said Govender.
“The vehicle’s front tyre burst. The suspects kept going until weforced the vehicle to stop. The driver
managed to escape. We arrested a fe-male and handed her and the vehicleover to the KwaDukuza SAPS,” saidGovender.
Later that night, Govender wascalled by the KwaDukuza SAPS tocome to the station because the“owner” of the vehicle came to re-trieve his car, which he claimed wasstolen.
“However, when I went to the sta-tion, I noticed the suspect who wasdriving the Polo Playa in the station.I told the police that hewas the driv-er.” She said the suspect was placedunder arrested and detained.

IF you ask any scientist whythey dowhat they do, youwillobviously get varying an-swers. An undergraduatemight tell you something verydifferent to a post doctoratestudent – who at this stagewould have asked him orherself the same questionwith increasing frequencyover the years.
I could run out of op-edspace explaining the reasonswhy science is important inour lives, but for the purposeof this column I will only tellyou that it is to vanquish igno-rance and exercise a healthydose of skepticism. Too manyof us are victims of pseudosci-ence, myths, misconceptionsand incorrect use of sciencethanks to marketing ploys.
Ignorance can be easilyovercome, but if you throw adash of ego into the mix, youhave a misguided sense ofself-preservation when itcomes to “touchy” issues suchas creationism, vaccination, evolution, alternative medi-cine and nutritional informa-tion. Thankfully, we can save
ourselves big headaches if weapply the simplest tenet ofscience, which boils down to“assume nothing and ques-tion everything”.
Science journalism existsnot only as a fact-checkingtool, but as a standard bywhich we practice healthyskepticism - not cynicism - tobetter ourselves and othersintell ectually.
It is unfortunate thereforethat science stories do nothold a lot ofweight in terms ofeditorial space in many na-tional and indeed local pa-pers in South Africa. Sciencestories have to compete with
sports and politics, with thelatter being in great supply.
As a science advocate, it ismy duty to try to convince youto like (or at least care about)science, but it is not a simpletask, and after all, a sports’journalist doesn’t need toconvince sports’ fans whythey should like sports.
Writing science articles isnot easy, and given the de-mands made on small newsteams, journalistsusually findthemselves with ridiculousschedules and little or no so-cial life. This makes it evenmore difficult to find personaltime to write about science, which many editors areloathe to accept as the write-up may not have as muchpulling power as an accidentor political scandal.
But it’s not only about thepulling power when it comesto non-scientific articles; sci-ence can be intimidating totheuninitiated. Iwould love totell you that science is allabout the discovery of somewondermaterialornewlydis-covered giant killer chicken
or the advent of aspace rock on a colli-sion course withKZN, but this is veryrarely the case.
Of course, storieslike this doexist, andyou can and shouldread about them onthe net. Some of myfavourite reputablesites include “I F*ck-ing Love Science”and Phil Plait’s “BadAstronomy”. Someof the best sciencewriting in the worldcan also be found atNational Geograph-ic’s “Phenomena”.
In a country anda province wherescience education isstill far below theglobal benchmark, itis time for us to con-sciously abandonour fear of science.Weneedtofall inlovewith the wonder ofscience, but also becareful to avoid“bumper-sticker”science, as one ofSouth Africa’s fore-most science jour-nalists Sarah Wildonce put it.
I encourage youto take the plungeintothedeep,beauti-ful and mysteriousworld of science.
You will not re-gret it.
Why youshould careabout science
In a country and aprovince wherescience educationis still far below theglobal benchmark,it is time for us to
consciously abandon ourfear of science.

OUR recent election administration under the IEC hasbrought about much debatearound the country.
Sitting in as a party agentat various voting stationswithin the KwaDukuza region,I was totally infuriated by thepoor administration by IECstaff.
Here are a few incidents Ipersonally encountered: TheRA Padaychee School had fivesub stations. The principal officers were not sure if youwere allowed to vote at a voting station you were not registered in if you were from another province only, or if youwere from KZN as well.
Hence, some voters wereturned away if they werefrom KZN and only voters
from other provinces were allowed to vote.
In one of the other sub stations, you were allowed tovote irrespective of whetheryou were from KZN or not;such confusion within thesame voting station.
This proved that our IECofficials do not know whatthey are doing.
In Tinley Manor, a voterwas registered within theward but was not on the voters roll. Poor administrationagain. In Shakaskraal, when arecount was done, it appearedthat ballots from one partywere mixed with another.
This indicating again thatwe have incompetent staffworking within the IEC; or canwe say this was a deliberateact?
At the Sizani PrimarySchool the DA party agentwas allowed to sit in wearinga blue Tshirt, which is DA
colours. Even though his Tshirt had branding of anothercompany, it was not impossible to read the party he represented. This again shows thatIEC officials just don’t knowthe rules.
The lack of skill from theIEC staff shows that our election process is not taken seriously. For a process which determines the managementand direction of our nation, wecould at least request thatIEC officials and staff meetcertain criteria before beingappointed to work in an eventas big as this.
We are living in times whenmuch scrutiny is given to thecorruption within our government. In saying this, is ourelection process under theguidance of the IEC also partand parcel of the corruptionwithin our country?

A complete medical history isindispensable and a thoroughphysical examination is para-mount to determining the possi-ble causes of joint pain in chil-dren. Some of the informationabout the joint pain, needed bythemedical practitioner, include:nature, distribution, severity, du-ration, aggravating and alleviat-

One way of categorising jointpain is to determine whether thechild is SICK or NOT SICK.
With a SICK child, the follow-ing are possible reasons why he/she is experiencing joint pain:-Osteomyelitis, septic arthritis-Following recent infections (vi-ral/reactive)-Chronic infection like TB or HIV-Rheumatic fever-Associated with a rash (HenochSchonlein Purpura, Kawasaki’sdisease, Systemic Juvenile Idio-pathic Arthritis)-LeukaemiaIf your child is not SICK, considerthe following:-Following TRAUMATIC injury-COAGULOPATHY (possiblebleeding/clottingdisorders in theblood)-Following recent infections-Existing chronic infections likeTB and HIV-Presence of bone tumours

THE sciatic nerve can literally be a huge pain inthe butt. It is the largest nerve in the body, whichconsists of a large bundle of smaller nerves thatbegin in the lumbar spine, travel down the buttocks, and move through the leg. Technically, sciatica is not a disease, but a group of symptomsthat affect the region of the sciatic nerve.
RADIATING PAIN IS ONE OF THE MORE COMMON AND INTENSE SYMPTOMS ASSOCIATEDWITH SCIATICA.
There can also be numbness and tinglingstarting in the lower back radiating down the leg. What Causes Sciatica?Sciatica occurs when something pushes on the sciatic nerve. This can be a muscle spasm, the spinal discs, and sometimes even the spine itself. Most often this pain is due to muscle spasms or aslipped disc, but it can be a sign of a serious illness and it is important to go to your doctor fordiagnosis.
Spinal disc herniation, often referred to as aslipped disc, is when a small portion of the spinaldisc bulges out of the spinal column. This discthen pushes on the sciatic nerve causing pain.
Another serious cause of sciatica is tumors, which require immediate medical attention. Insome severe cases, spinal stenosis, or a narrowingof the spinal canal, can push on the nerve andcause pain.
What is piriformis syndrome? The sciatica nerve runs under or, in some peo
ple, through the piriformis muscle. This muscle is located in the pelvis. It is con

If thepiriformis musclestarts to spasm orbecome tight, it canput pressure on thesciatic nerve andcause the pain aswell as the radiatingsymptoms. The persistent spasmof the piriformis muscle is called piriformissyndrome. It can becaused by an injury orsedentary lifestyles inpeople who don’tstretch or exercise.Particularly if you sitall day at a desk orcomputer, this can bea problem.

DURING the course of our lives, we may performstrenuous activities, carry heavy objects andsomehowbeplacedinsituationswhereourbod
ies and muscles become overloaded. This means aparticular joint is unable to handle the strain.
As a result, the surrounding and overlying structures, viz. muscles, ligaments and tendons become extremely tight. When these become tight, TRIGGERPOINTS are formed.
TRIGGERPOINTSareirritable, hard, painful“knots”within a muscle, that may cause pain over a larger areaor refer pain distal to the source of the “knot”. Theselead to restrictions in movement of the muscle andjoint. The patient may complain of excruciating pain, inability to move an area, inability to walk, carry objects, sit for long periods and the muscles and spineor joint may feel tight and tired. The patient may befatigued due to constant pain, spasm and restriction.
Sleep may become impossible as the patient is unable to find a comfortable position to fall asleep in.On awakening, there may be excessive stiffness andpain.
Dry needling is a technique where a thin, dry needleis inserted through the skin, into this trigger point. Thisprocess is used to reduce the pain that may arise fromthe trigger point by releasing these tight bands of muscle. The circulation is increased and nerve functioningof the area restored. The healing time of patients’ issignificantly reduced.
Any tenderness after needling that MAY arise is only due to the fact that, THE AREA was very tight andinflammed. DR SINGH, advises use of an icepack aftertreatment for optimal healing. When the patient’smuscles have been adequately relaxed, this allows, easier movement of the joint and spine, in general. DRSINGH will then be able to gently mobilise or adjust(realign) the joint IF this is required.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DRY NEEDLING AND ACUPUNCTURE?
Acupuncture is based on Chinese philosophy whereenergy (Chi), flows via different meridians to all parts
of the body. When there has been a “block” in energyflow, “disease” disease may occur, hence, needlesare placed specifically where a block has occurred inorder to release these, restore flow of energy, thereby, restoring health. With dry needling, however, theplacement of needles is NOT specific to meridians orenergy blocks. Dry needling is done specifically in amuscle that displays signs and symptoms of triggerpoint irritation.DRY NEEDLING HELPS THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS
negative energy, it can turn into a torrent of mishap.Be happy. For body and mind balance, inner peace, andhow to find the real YOU, to open the HAPPINESS andFREEDOM that IS YOU, Taichi, which is meditation inmotion, will open these hidden doors. Breathing techniques and body postures that enable the body to bemore oxygenated and flexible will carry you throughthis process.
