Azusa Street Mission & Historical Society
Azusa Street Mission & Historical Society (known as Azusa Street Mission) is based in
Los Angeles, California. Fred and Wilma Berry founded the Azusa Street Mission in
2006 with the goal to educate the public about the historical significance of the
Azusa Street Mission and the global Pentecostal Movement's impact on society. The
organization’s mission is to carry the flame of Azusa to the next generation
throughout the nations.
Azusafest Background
Azusafest is an annual gospel music celebration hosted by Azusa Street Mission & Historical Society to
commemorate the Azusa Street Revival.
Over a century ago, a partially-sighted African American minister, William J. Seymour, came to Los
Angeles to share the message that the Holy Spirit still baptizes people with the evidence of speaking in
tongues. His early efforts to preach the Pentecostal message were rejected. Church leaders were
suspicious of his religious doctrine and his teachings, but he persevered and kept on praying.
In April of 1906, a powerful outpouring of the Holy Spirit occurred within a small group of worshippers.
There were physical and mental healings, speaking in unknown languages and many other miraculous
and inexplicable occurrences. The news spread and soon hundreds of people started coming from all
over the world to the Apostolic Faith Mission on Azusa Street in Los Angeles seeking to receive the Holy
Spirit.
The Azusa Street Revival lasted over three years and is widely considered to be the primary catalyst that
sparked the worldwide Pentecostal Movement. Currently, it is estimated that over 800 million
Pentecostals in the United States, Latin America, Africa and Asia can trace their religious origins to the
Azusa Street Revival and Bishop Seymour.
Fred and Wilma Berry carry on the history of Azusa Street as international representatives through the
Azusa Street Mission & Historical Society. The organization's mission is to carry the flame of Azusa Street to
the next generation throughout the nations of the world.
The Azusa Street Mission organizes and hosts an annual Azusa Street Festival, called Azusafest. This festival
commemorates the Azusa Street Revival of 1906. The Azusafest celebration, normally held in Los Angeles
since 2006, began traveling to the nations when the celebration was invited to Ghana in 2011. Last year,
Azusafest was held in Brazil with over 3,000 leaders in attendance.

Trends in Christianity
In 2011, there were an estimated 584 million Pentecostal and Charismatic Christians worldwide.
They made up 8.5 percent of the world's population and 27 percent of all Christians. There were
279 million Pentecostals and over 300 million Charismatics (the figures for Charismatics include
both the Charismatic Movement in the historic churches as well as the neocharismatic
movement).2

Trends in Christianity (continued)
Pentecostal and Charismatic Christianity is second in size only to the Roman Catholic Church
(Note that the figures for Charismatics includes 120 million Catholic Charismatics who would also
be counted as part of Roman Catholicism).3
In Brazil, Pentecostalism has grown so rapidly that statistics gathered for the World Christian
Encyclopedia in 2000 show followers made up nearly 47 percent of the population,4 while the
most recent census taken by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) in 2010
records approximately 42.3 million people (or 23 percent of the population) as Pentecostal.
The top two largest national Christian populations are United States - 246,780,000 (79.5% of the
Population) and Brazil - 175,770,000 (90.2% of the Population).5

Fred and Wilma Berry are missionaries with a ministry focused on
teaching the principles of God’s word as it relates to the Nations. The
Berry’s re-opened the Azusa Street Mission location during the Azusa
Street centennial celebration in April 2006. They were ordained and
commissioned as an apostle and prophet team by Apostle Bill
Hamon in 2004. Apostle Bill Hamon and the Christian International
Board of regents commissioned Fred Berry to pastor the new Azusa
Street Mission. Since that time of commissioning they have taught
the Apostolic Prophetic training sessions on Azusa Street and have
graduated over 1000 pastors and leaders into the present truth of God's word concerning the gifts of the
Spirit and the prophetic realm. Apostle Fred Berry has a unique ministry with a focus on teaching the
principles of God's word as it relates to the Nations. Apostle Berry has a Holy Spirit inspired love of Biblical
and natural history. He seeks to teach others about our historic legacy through an annual event called
the "Azusa Street Festival" and a weekly TV show titled “All About Love” which aired throughout Los
Angeles from 1995 to 2007. Fred has traveled to and preached in over 17 countries. Fred and Wilma Berry
affectionately known, as "God's Living Flint-Stones" will celebrate their 18th wedding anniversary in July
2013.
Edward A. Smith was born in Los Angeles, California. He received Jesus Christ as his personal
Savior in February 1973. He spent the first eleven years of his Christian life sitting under the
teaching ministry of Dr. Frederick K.C. Price, Founder/Pastor of Crenshaw Christian Center,
Los Angeles, California. In 1984, he and his family joined Zoe Christian Fellowship Los Angeles.
Pastor Ed earned a BA in Applied Mathematics and a MBA in Marketing/Finance from UCLA. He is much
sought after as a speaker for conferences and seminars in the U.S. and abroad. He was invited to Russia
in 1995 to participate in training the staff of the fourth largest bank in Russia. His speaking/ministry
engagements have taken him to Japan, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, South Africa and Costa Rica. Pastor
Ed led the first South African Government sponsored trip of Black entrepreneurs to South Africa. CNN
Headline News spotlighted him for his ministry involvement in South Africa. Pastor Ed is the former
Chairman and current Board Member of the Evangelical Christian Credit Union, the largest financier of
church and ministry loans in the United States, with over $1 Billion under asset management. Additionally,
he serves as the Board Chairman of Windows International Network. In 2004, he was elected to the
board of the Christian Management Association, the Union Rescue Mission of Los Angeles, and the
Serenity Foster Care Agency. Pastor Ed and First Lady Vanessa Smith have been married since 1975, and
are blessed with four wonderful children, three sons, Joshua, and wife Marsee, Eddie, Aaron, and one
daughter, Naomi.
Jabes de Alencar was born in Cajazeiras, Paraíba State in an evangelical home to a father,
Aristotle Torres de Alencar, who is one of the pioneers of the Assemblies of God in Brazil.
Pastor Alencar has been married for over 35 years to Pastora de Alencar Rodrigues Zilmar
and they have three children: Glauber, Dayan and Layane, and four grandchildren: Migueo,
Manoela, Mel and Mikaela. Prior to serving in the ministry, he worked at a bank but he knew
and accepted the call of God to win souls for Jesus. He studied at the Bible Institute of the Assemblies of

God from 1978-1980. He began pastoring in a small town of only three thousand inhabitants in Igaratá -
SP, where he made many evangelistic campaigns and from there went to work with Pastor Morris Cerullo.
After living a few years in the United States, he returned to Brazil. On March 6, 1988 inaugurated the
Evangelical Church Assembly of God in Bom Retiro, with only thirty (30) members. During these last 23
years the church has grown to more than 10,000 members and hundreds of affiliates, some abroad. He
is the president of the Interdenominational Council of Ministers of Brazil Evangelicals; president of the
Council of Evangelical Pastors and Ministers of the State of São Paulo; permanent member of the
Advisory Committee of the Community Policing of Sao Paulo State; and Member of the National Council
of the United Nations in Sao Paulo. The exemplary features of his ministry are evangelism, a warm
perpetual smile, and a fantastic sense of humor. His primary mission is the unity of the Body of Christ.
Musical Guests
Maurice Sklar was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to a Russian-Jewish family with a
rich musical heritage. At age four, he began playing the violin. He won numerous
awards from the age of nine, and left home to study violin with Fredell Lack in Houston,
Texas, when he was only thirteen. He attended Meadowmount Summer Music School,
Ivan Galamian's Strings Camp, for seven consecutive years from the age of thirteen to nineteen. Sklar
has appeared on Trinity Broadcasting Network's "Praise the Lord," "TCT", Daystar, "CBN Asia" with Hugo
Chan, "This Is Your Day with Benny Hinn," and "Richard Roberts Live!" programs. He is a frequent guest on
"The 700 Club" with Pat Robertson, and recorded for the soundtrack of Kenneth Copeland's movie
"Covenant Rider." "El Shaddai," Dr. Sklar's first album as a signed artist with Integrity Music, Inc., was
recorded with the National Philharmonic Orchestra of London in 1994. It stands as a tribute to his
pioneering efforts to blend classical orchestral stylings with the Christian worship realm. His next album,
"Songs of Zion," also recorded with London's National Philharmonic Orchestra, is dedicated to the nation
of Israel and the Jewish people. Maurice participated in the huge Hosanna-Integrity Music project,
"Shalom Jerusalem." In this live worship concert recorded in Jerusalem, he is the primary instrumental
soloist, and joins his musical gifts with fellow Messianic Jew, vocalist Paul Wilbur. Released to nearly 100
nations throughout the world in 1995, it has been the largest selling video ever produced by Integrity
Music.
