“BJP alliance with TeluguDesam Party is definitelycapable of sending a largecontingent of members to theLok Sabha in support of theNDA.” -Arun Jaitley

Baisakhi : 14th April, 2014

“NDA is going to people withassurance of providing aprogress oriented & stablegoverment to fulfill dreamsof our youth.”

-Narendra Modi

Vaisakhi also known as Baisakhi, Vaishakhi, orVasakhi is a festival celebrated across the northernIndian subcontinent, especially in the Punjab regionby the Sikh community. More recently, this festivalis also celebrated around the world by Sikhdiaspora. For the Sikh community this festivalcommemorates the establishment of the Khalsa. Itis also celebrated by Hindus and Buddhists fordifferent reasons including the start of a new year.People in the Punjab Region regard Vaisakhi as aharvest festival.

The festival bears a great significance for theSikhs due of the fact that on the Vaisakhi Day in theyear 1699, the 10th Guru of the Sikhs, Guru GobindSingh laid down the foundation of the Panth Khalsa, that is the Order of the ‘Pure Ones’. This day is alsoobserved as the thanks giving day by the farmerswhereby the farmers pay their tribute, thanking God for the abundant harvest and also praying for thefuture prosperity.

For Hindus, it is the start of the New Year, and is celebrated with requisite bathing, partying, andworshipping. It’s believed that thousands of years ago, Goddess Ganga descended to earth and in herhonour, many Hindus gather along the sacred Ganges River for ritual baths. The action is centered in theholy cities along the Ganges in north India, or in Srinagar’s Mughal Gardens, Jammu’s Nagbani Temples–or anywhere in Tamil Nadu. Hindus plant poles (wrapped in flags of gold-embroidered silk) in front of theirhomes, and hang pots of brass, copper or silver on top.

In Kerala, the festival is called ‘Vishu’. It includes fireworks, shopping for new clothes and interestingdisplays called ‘Vishu Kani’. These are arrangements of flowers, grains, fruits, cloth, gold, and money areviewed early in the morning, to ensure a year of prosperity. In Assam, the festival is called Bohag Bihu, and the community organizes massive feasts, music, and dancing. Swami Dayanand Saraswati foundedthe Arya Samaj on Vaisakhi, in 1875.

Apart from the Sikhs and Hindus, Vaisakhi is an important day for the Buddhists as well and the nameis Vesakha, Vaisakha, Vesak or Wesak. It commemorates the Birth, the Awakening and the EnlightenedPassing Away of Buddha Gautama who was born as prince Siddharta.

.Elections this time appear unique in at least one aspect – the results are known

even before a single vote is cast. No one is disputing the fact that Shri NarendraBhai Modi is going to be the next Prime Minister of the country and BJP led NDA

is going to form the next government. The campaign for’Abki bar - Modi sarkar’ isgaining momentum with every passing day, it is BJP and NDA all the way. People arefull of enthusiasm and election fervor is in full swing. From urban cities to remote areasin the country, everywhere people are expressing their support to Shri Narendra Modiand BJP. As people are responding overwhelmingly to Shri Modi’s call for ‘Congressmukta Bharat’, Congress is preparing itself to face the imminent rout.

Shri Narendra Modi becoming next Prime Minister of the country is only a matterof time. It is getting reflected in the mood of the country. Almost all the opinion pollsconducted so far after the election process started have been unanimous in acceptingthat BJP led NDA is well ahead of others. India Today- C Voter opinion poll which hadearlier projected 212 seats for NDA in a survey conducted between Dec 2013 to Jan 2014has now projected in an opinion poll conducted under Times Now-India TV-C Voter227 seats for NDA. ABP News-Nielsen has predicted 236 seats for NDA in its opinionpoll in Feb 2014. CNN-IBN-Lokniti-CSDS had earlier projected between 212-232 seatsfor NDA in Feb 2014 has now revised itself while predicting between 234-246 seats forNDA in March 2014. Similarly NDTV-Hansa Research which had earlier projected 232seats for NDA is now predicting 259 seats in its March 2014 opinion poll. All theseopinion polls are also predicting a vote share of 31-36% for NDA. It has to be noted thatwhile the results of these opinion polls are coming in, NDA is on expansion modewinning allies and friends across political spectrum and in every nook and corner ofthe country. While this editorial is being written, the news of Telugu Desam Partybecoming part of NDA is grabbing the national headlines. All these opinion polls wereconducted before TDP becoming part of NDA, now the new polls will further boost theprospects of NDA.

While NDA is gaining ground with each passing day, Congress led UPA is ondownslide, hopelessly sinking as never before. Times Now-India TV-C Voter hasprojected 101 for UPA and 89 for Congress in its opinion poll conducted between Jan-Feb 2014.ABP News –Neilsen has predicted 92 seats for UPA in its Feb 2014 polls.NDTV –Hansa has given 123 seats in its March 2014 polls while CNN-IBN-Lokniti-CSDS has predicted 111-123 seats for UPA in its March 2014 polls. In all probabilityCongress will not be able to reach a 100 figure and it will be a never before rout forCongress, a complete decimation.

Opinion polls are unanimous in accepting the fact that NDA is moving towardsa huge win in the elections 2014. As soon as elections were declared and differentpolitical parties announced their candidates the mood in the country became upbeatas people were eagerly waiting for change. The mood got reflected in the opinion pollsas all the pollsters started giving higher number of seats to UPA while revising theirearlier estimates. The misgovernance, corruption, price rise, unemployment, policyparalysis, weak leadership, crisis after crisis in governance, loot after loot of public fund– everything is fresh in people’s mind, they have not forgotten these. Congress whichbelieved in the dictum that ‘public memory is short’ will have to pay price for itsmisdeeds now, it is now a sinking ship. People are now remembering the days of NDA,

‘Mission 272+’ within reach,time to aim for 300+ !

the days of fastdevelopment, nationbuilding projects, stableprices, a regime free ofscam and corruption andnow new hope in theleadership of ShriNarendra Modi. ShriNarendra Modi and histrack record in governanceand development, hispolitical will anddetermination, hisleadership qualities, andhis dream for a developed, prosperous and strongIndia has captured theimagination of the nation.

As the pollsters arerevising their predictionsin NDA favour, the‘Mission 272+’ seemswithin reach. There is nodoubt that NDA is poisedto cross 272 seats. Theenthusiasm of people whowant to come out of adecade of hopelessnessand despair and lookingfor change are giving theirmassive support to ShriNarendra Modi and BJP.The people’s support isvisible in the wave and ithas been rightly observedthat it is going to betransformed into atsunami. The increasingsupport which is cuttingacross caste, community, religion, sex and region isa lesson for those who seekto divide society on theselines for their politicalgains. The massivesupport which ShriNarendra Modi isreceiving across thecountry calls for revisingthe NDA’s target. It is timeto aim for 300+!

Nuapada, Balangir and Rourkela, Odisha

People want to punish those who haveruined the nation : Narendra Modi

From Our Correspondentof the Congress, Shri Modi cited many instances oftheir misdeeds that had disrupted the social andcultural identity of India. The Congress’ hesitancyin addressing the serious issues of price rise, corruption, unemployment, poverty, safety andsecurity of farmers and women, was clearly putforth by Shri Modi when he spoke of how youthfrom Odisha had to go to other states for jobopportunities, despite the fact that the State hadrich mineral resources. The vast yet untappedpotential of port-led development and handicrafts-related prospects in Odisha was also stressed upon

Shri Modi, whofurther statedhow the State andC e n t r a lgovernment wereleast bothered oftapping thetourism andd e v e l o p m e n tprospects of theregion.

He also spokeof the insecurityunder whichwomen in thecountry wereliving, and statedhow Funds likethe NirbhayaFund created by

the Centre, lay unused. This, Shri Modi said, wasamong the many attempts of the Congress to foolthe Nation. Questioning Smt. Sonia Gandhi overthe recent National Crime records which had 7Congress-ruled states amongst the top 10 statesfiguring in the list of states with most atrocities onwomen, Shri Modi asked if this was the Centre’stake on women safety.

Former BJP president Shri Jual Oram, seniorleaders Shri Dilip Ray, Shri Dhiren Senapati, ShriKishen Sahu and Shri Upendra Pradhan wereamong the senior BJP leaders present during therallies.

Addressing massive rallies at Nuapada,Balangir and Rourkela in Odisha, on 4April, Shri Narendra Modi condemned the

dynastic and destructive politics of the Congressand appealed to the people to give chance to a‘sevak’ to serve the country.

Emphasising how the 2014 Elections wereabout the people’s voice of bringing a change andpunishing those who have ruined the Nation, ShriModi affirmed of the Congress’ and BJD’s wipeout and said, “Naveen Babu has been in power foralmost 15 years. What has Odisha got? Naveen

Babu, your days in power are numbered. Shahzadeji, Madam Sonia ji, the direction of the wind isclear.”

Attacking the dynastic politics of the Congressand stating the destructive impact it has had onthe democratic fabric of the country, Shri Modispoke of how the Elections 2014 was about a fightbetween leaders with affluent political lineage onone hand and the son of a tea-seller who wishedto serve the country on the other. “This is ademocracy and dynasty is the biggest enemy of ademocracy,” affirmed Shri Modi.

Urging the people not to trust the false promises

Rally in Delhi

People of Delhi should make a choice onthe basis of their recent experience

experience did you have in Delhi? You saw theCongress A and the Congress B. What a coalition!1st make a government with Congress then resignand travel all over India to help Congress andhand over the administration of Delhi to theCongress through back door.” He asked why is itthat despite losing the elections the Congress is incharge of administration in Delhi. “They are notbothered about India…they only want to helpCongress,” remarked Shri Modi.

Shri Modi recalled that the BJP and the JanSangh has spent years in opposition, includingtimes when the number of corporators winning ontheir ticket was minor. Yet, the party workedtirelessly, kept the governments in check andremained close to the people. He questioned thosewho went to Delhi’s night shelters with cameraswhy they have forgotten the people of Delhi. “Thematurity needed in a democracy was clearlylacking. People can forgive mistakes but notbetrayals. People of Delhi must decide on the basisof their experiences,” he opined.

All 7 Lok Sabha candidates of the BJP, Dr.Harshvardhan (Chandani Chowk), MeenakshiLekhi ji (New Delhi), Shri Mahesh Girri (EastDelhi), Shri Parvesh Verma (West Delhi), ShriRamesh Bidhuri (South Delhi), Dr. Udit Raj (NorthWest Delhi), Shri Manoj Tiwari (North East Delhi)were present during the rally. Shri VK Malhotraand Shri Vijay Goel were also present during theoccasion.

Addressing a massive rally in Delhi, ShriNarendra Modi made a strong pitch to thepeople of Delhi to elect the BJP candidates

in all 7 seats. He exposed both the Congress andthe Aam Admi Party, which he aptly described asthe B-Team of the Congress Party. Shri Modi tookon the Congress Party over their manifesto sayingthat while manifestos are supposed to be purethings for every party, the Congress has reducedit to a joke and repeated all those promises theyhave not been able to fulfill since their 2004manifesto.

Shri Modi said that the Congress does notbelieve in the sanctity of institutions. Giving anexample he said, “Shahzada introduced a newsystem of primaries. He said this would changepolitics. 15 such seats were identified and thewinners would be given tickets. A lot was evenwritten about it but what happened in the end?The system suffered a premature end. In Vadodaraa candidate was chosen. But overnight his namewas removed. He had won on his own strengthbut overnight his name was removed. His crime-he is a Dalit. He was pressurized to withdraw. Isit's crime to be a Dalit? Should a Dalit not get achance?”

Taking on the AAP for their opportunism andimmaturity, Shri Modi affirmed that the Party isnot yet reached that maturity that is required in ademocracy. He described the Party as a B Team ofthe Congress. He observed, “What kind of an

Maharashtra and India that is free from Congressand NCP.” Shri Modi said that the 2014 Lok SabhaElections is a battle between good governanceagenda of the NDA versus the misgovernance andcorruption of the UPA.

Addressing a historic rally in Nanded, ShriModi called upon the people of Nanded to defeatformer Maharashtra Chief Minister, Shri AshokChavan. He came out all guns blazing against theformer Maharashtra Chief Minister and theCongress leadership over the Adarsh scam, even

questioning the commitment of Congress VP ShriRahul Gandhi to combat corruption. He remindedthe Congress Vice President over his recentcomments on investigation against Shri AshokChavan and questioned whether rewarding himwith a ticket Congress’ definition of investigation. He described the giving of the ticket as shamelessand commented on the very ‘Adarsh’ set of leadersthe Congress has.

He went on to say that for him, Adarsh is notonly about corruption and about giving one’srelatives flats but it symbolizes the disrespect theCongress has for the armed forces. Mincing nowords, he said, “On this pure land of Guru GobindSingh I assure the people that we will not sparethose who looted the heroes of Kargil. We stand forclean politics and I assure you that we will putsystems in place where corrupt belonging to eachand every party have their cases disposed in oneyear. The guilty will be punished and those whowere wrongly implicated will be relieved. I don’tcare which party the leader will belong to.”

Not sparring Shri Ashok Chavan for themanner in which he ensured the withdrawal of

sitting Nanded MP and his brother-in-law, ShriModi commented that in our Indian culture we aretaught to give our sisters as much as we can buthere is a person who has taken away from hissister!

Equally critical of the lack of concern of UnionAgriculture Minister Shri Sharad Pawar, theNDA’s PM candidate said, “The AgricultureMinister of India is from Maharashtra but he isunable to save farmers. He has time to talk aboutcricket but no time to talk about suffering

farmers.”In Akola he took up the issue ofthe suffering of the cotton farmers andquestioned the Agriculture Minister on themanner in which export ban of cottonexport was placed. He added that whilethe UPA government bans cotton exports,it encourages mutton exports.

Shri Modi did not spare the rampantcorruption and misgovernance by theCongress-NCP leaders both in the Stateand the Centre. He affirmed thatMaharashtra is the same land that gaveus Shivaji Maharaj, who is a torch bearerof good governance but today, leadersfrom the State are involved in Adarsh and

CWG scams.Exposing the Congress and its allies, Shri Modi

avowed that usually coalitions are formed to defeatthe incumbent government but this time there areall sorts of efforts being made to prevent him fromwinning in the elections. “The reason is clear. Thosewho have looted the nation know where their placeis after 16th May,” Shri Modi said, receiving athunderous applause from the audience.

Extending GudiPadwa greetings to the peopleof Maharashtra, he urged the people to take apledge to defeat the Congress-NCP and usher inan era of good governance.

Those present on the occasion includedAmravati MP and Shiv Sena leader Shri AnandraoAdsul, senior Shiv Sena leader and MLAShriSubhash Desai, Maharashtra BJP PresidentShri Devendra Fadnavis and other leaders of theMahayuti. In Nanded, Shri Gopinath Mundeexpressed confidence that Mahayuti will win allseats in Maharashtra and that former MaharashtraCM Shri Ashok Chavan will be defeated. Heassured a toll-Mukt Maharashtra and a state whereinterests of farmers are safeguarded.

Congress’ Manifesto 2014 is a document ofdeceit, another fraud committed on peopleand it has no credibility. It wants to fool

people with false promises and fraudulent means, but people are wise enough. The Congress partyis clearly exhausted and bereft of new ideas aftertwo terms in government. Its 2014 manifesto is areflection of that. It is only repackaged old ideas. Some of the promises of 2014 are the failed ones of2009.

The Manifesto is full of claims that areimpossible to achieve by them, like the one toincrease the growth rate from the present 4% to8%. On the contrary, you have brought it downfrom 8.5% to less than 5% in last ten years.

Congress president says that 90 per cent ofwhat was promised in 2009 has already beenimplemented. If that were really the case, theCongress would not be where it is today. Forgetabout 90% you have not implemented 10% of thepromises made. What can be farther from truththan this claim of her? It is a slap on the face of thepeople.

It’s an absolute betrayal of the promises made.Congressmen, do you remember the promises madein 2009 and the ones made in 2004?

At one level, journalist andformer MP from theCongress MJ Akbar, and

at another level, former JD(U)leader Sabir Ali, have answeredthe self-styled secular parties’charge against BJP’s primeministerial candidate NarendraModi by praising his party. In alucid statement on why he issupporting Mr Modi, Mr Akbardistinguished between theexpectations of those above 40years of age and those in their20s. Pointing out their differentaspirations, he went to the heartof the major issue in this election:

“For those on the wrong sideof 30 or 40, five years is justanother passage in life. For thosewho are 25 years, it is thedifference between aspirationand despair. If a young persondoes not find a job in these fiveyears, he or she begins to losethat vital energy which comesfrom self-confidence. If the youngdo not power the economy thenthe economy will be stuck in thequagmire of idle waste.

“There is only one wayforward. And there is among thevisible choices , only one personbest suited to lift the nation outof a septic swamp.”

The rush to join the BJP,powered by their individualevaluation of that choice, severalother leaders like NK Singh, aformer Union Finance Secretary,

and RK Singh, a former UnionHome Secretary, have shown theway to the electorate. They areamong several others at that levelwhose ability to make anindependent choice and not beblinded by the endless divide theother political parties are makingto tar the BJP’s prime ministerialcandidate, is beyond question.

At the other end, theCongress, clinging on to the lastdays of its power, is almostturning shameless in displaying

its corruption-tainted hand.Look at the appointment thatUnion Minister for Home AffairsSushil Kumar Shinde gave to the2G scam-accused entrepreneurShahid Balwa. What made MrShinde meet a major accused ina prime case of corruptioninvolving the UPA Governmentfunctionaries and who is on bail, has not been made clear.

The urgency of this meeting

has gone unexplained while itsin- appropriateness is all tooevident. The two persons havegiven two different versions whythey had to meet. Former UnionHome Secretary RK Singh hadrevealed days before thismeeting that Mr Shinde hadsought to interfere with the 2Gscam being investigated by theCBI.

Mr Shinde has onlyconfirmed what Mr Singh hadrevealed. That despite an

election campaign going on, theUnion Home Minister gives anappointment to a major accusedin a case involving thefunctionaries of the Government, exposes the depths to which theUPA has sunk; it’s still sinkingunashamedly. Unashamedlybecause it is itself convinced thatit is not going to return to powerfor years to come. So why notcelebrate the last days of its rule!

Even irrespective of theoutcome of this general election, the political situation that hasevolved in the last 12 monthsleaves little room for excludingthe conclusion that the Congresswill be out of power almostacross the country and the stageis set for the Bharatiya JanataParty-led partnership to take thecentre-stage.

The last instalment ofelections to the State Assemblies,re-confirmed the BJP as thepopular choice for running theState Governments for the thirdtime in succession in MadhyaPradesh and Chhattisgarh, andearlier in Gujarat. This time,Rajasthan was added to the listwhere the then ruling Congresswas decimated. Central India isnow totally BJP-ruled, and in thewest, besides the thrice-confirmed dominance of the BJPin Gujarat, the party with itsallies is well entrenched tochallenge the Congress-Nationalist Congres Partycombine in Maharashtra.

The Congress as a nationalparty is now threatened with atotal eclipse from the nationalscene. Across the entire Gangeticplains, the only State that theCongress holds on to is Haryana. In eastern India, only Jharkhandhas a Government in which theCongress is there in the Stateregime as a junior partner.

In the south, entire Andhrais lost to the Congress. In thiselection it does not have even alocal ally in this region where itwas the dominant party only asrecently as in 2012. In TamilNadu, for 50 years, it has had tohang on to the coat-tails of eitherof the two rival Dravida partiesto gain a share of power or get a

few Members of Parliament at theCentre.

It’s only in Kerala andKarnataka where the Congresshas a major presence. But inKerala it is the allies in the rulingUDF that are having a major sayin the State Government that isreduced to a single-membermajority in the State Assembly.

The Congress faces theprospect of being virtually out ofpower in the entire countryexcept perhaps in Assam, North-East and Karnataka. Its StateGovernment in Uttarakhand isshaky, and in Himachal Pradeshthe second most powerful figurein that party has joined the BJP.

Corruption charges andinquiries are swirling round it—the CBI has questioned Mr TKANair, who was Secretary to thePrime Minister when the coalscam took place. To what extentwill the earlier 2G scam sully theGovernment, will shortly be

The decision of Mr Modi tocontest also from Varanasi withits significant Muslimpopulation, especially of thegrassroots artisans like weavers, itself exposes the communal cardas ineffective and irrelevant.Besides, Varanasi is also anIndian cultural centre where themost holy shrines of Hindureligion and environmentproclaim of a history of severalthousand years, going back tothe origins of India’s culture andphilosophy.

In that ancient city, there isalso a convergence of people andcultures and saints andmusicians, artisans and artists. The choice of Varanasi as hisproving ground for leading thisnation of great diversity led byits majority religion, is itself anact of both courage andaffirmation of nationalleadership for Mr Modi.

The next Prime Minister willnot only be from the BJP but alsotruly represent the nation, sharply contrasting with hispredecessor who was, as someanalysts mocked, a merenominee.

When the NDA Government had assumed office

in the year 1998, India’s growth rate was 4.8%.When it left office in May 2004 India was at arobust growth rate of 8.5%. This was achievedinspite of many inhibiting factors like Pokhran IIsanction, Kargil War, attack on Indian Parliament,2002 drought and others factor. Even Mr.Chidambaram was compelled to concede in theEconomic Survey 2005 that the economy hadregistered a growth rate of 8.5% the highest inlast 30 years except two year. With this very robust and stable economic

With the critical state of economy because ofgross mismanagement, with industrialproduction and manufacturing seriously crippled,it was no surprise that unemployment isseriously down. It is no surprise that UPA recordat Job creation has been extremely poor. As perNational Sample Survey Data the number of Jobscreated between 1999-2000 and 2004-05 (6 Yearsof NDA) was 6.07 Crore while in between 2004-05 to2011-12 (8 years of UPA) the total number of Jobcreated was 1.54 crore. Good infrastructure is the backbone of anyeconomy. Main pillars of infrastructure of anyeconomy are the roads, power, iron and steel industry, mining industry with coal as one of the maincomponents and ports through which a countryconducts its foreign trade. Years of neglect of

Power generation is animportant for country’s growth.Nearly 68% India’s powergeneration is thermal based. TheNDA Government made powergeneration de-licensed under

the Electricity Act of 2003. However, the coal scamhas caused a serious dent and apart from loss of morethan 1 lakh crore to public exchequer the powergeneration performance has seriously sufferedbecause of erratic supply. Further as per the KPMGreport “recharging the Power Sector” released inNovember, 2013, powers units of capacity of around33000 MW stranded due to lack of coal and natural gassupply making an investment of more than Rs. 10,000crore unviable. It could be argued that Akbaris just another opportunistjumping on to the Modi

bandwagon as much as otherswho joined the party in recentdays. Everybody, after all, lovesto be on the winning side —barring those who see virtue indefeat and seek victimhood.

It would, however, be unfairto call Akbar an opportunist. Theshift in his politics, as reflectedin his writing, has been gradual, gathering speed over the pastcouple of years. He turnedagainst the Congress long ago;he embraced the BJP a week ago.In between he grappled with thequestion that even truly secularMuslims who have an identitybeyond their name and faith areconfronted with: Should theydare the community by breakingranks? In the end, Akbar decidedto do so.

The timing of Akbar joiningthe BJP is at best coincidentalthough the message is all themore powerful because of it. Thespectacular collapse of theCongress would have perhapsnot mattered had the JD(U), theSP and the BSP, all of whoseleaders believe they alone havethe right to the Muslim vote, held their ground in the Hindibelt. Fortunately for the BJP (and

unfortunately for these partiesand their sanctimonioussupporters among the Left-liberal intelligentsia and thecommentariat that dominates our‘national’ mainstream media) theModi Wave has flattened thehopes of these contenders andpretenders to power.

In a sense, the Muslim votertoday is confused. Thissummer’s election, irrespective ofthe results, has already shatteredmany conventional beliefs inpolitics, among them theunshakeable faith that theMuslim in India casts his (or her)veto, and not vote, on pollingday. This stems from the long-held notion that Muslims vote toa pre-decided pattern, tacticallyvoting not for the party that will

best serve their interest but thatwhich can defeat the BJP. Thevote, therefore, is not necessarilysymbolic of reposing trust in theparty of their choice but a veto toblock the BJP.

Muslim fears of the BJP as amonster that will devour themwere reinforced, andunderstandably so, after theghastly rioting in Gujarat in2002. Amplification by media, especially 24x7 news televisionchannels which brought the riotsinto posh drawing rooms andthe subsequent campaign to pinthe responsibility on Modiserved to strengthen these fears. An equally devious role wasplayed by foreign-funded NGOsand ‘human rights’ activists whodiscovered the 2002 violencecould be milked for money —maligning Modi and defamingthe BJP formed the foundation ofa profitable business model. Aclosure by way of swiftprosecution of those guilty ofmurder and arson was preventedby taking recourse to frivolousbut long-drawn litigation.Jaundiced stories did the rest.

In the cacophonous din ofactivists and journalists whowear their secularism on theirsleeves, facts were sought to beburied. Thousands killed,

Modi and Muslims : Veto versus VoteBy Kanchan Gupta

If this summer’s election sees Muslims casting their vote instead of exercising their veto, then Narendra Modi can claim to have turned yet another conventional political beliefon its head Veteran journalist and noted author MJ Akbar joining the BJP may not havegladdened bleeding heart Left-liberals but it has surely come as a boost for the party andits Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi.

hundreds raped, wombs ofpregnant women ripped openwere some of the templatedescriptions of the riots. That allthis and more was fiction, thatthe death toll was 1,044,including 790 Muslims and 250Hindus, that the rioting followedthe grisly burning of coach S-9 ofSabarmati Express in which 48Hindus returning from Ayodhyawere killed, that Gujarat had forlong been a tinder box ofcommunal violence with riotserupting over the most

insignificant of disputes, that farworse had happened inCongress-ruled States, found fewtakers among Muslims.

It took a decade forperceptions to change. Modi’samazing record of governance,Gujarat’s stunning economicgrowth and development, thecommunal peace that has beenmaintained for more than 10years now and the prosperity ofMuslims in that State havecoalesced to trigger rethinking. The start to 2002 was withoutdoubt ominous. Twelve yearslater, 2014 has begun on morethan new hope — there is newexpectation and aspirationamong Gujarat’s Muslims. TheGujarat Story has been carriedfar and wide: Muslims elsewherenow have the urge to be at par

with their co-religionists inGujarat. Wallowing in povertyis no longer the preferred optionand many young Muslimswould hesitate to indulge inmanufactured victimhood.

News television is a strangebeast — it calibrates news andformulates views in a manner soas to best push ratings and grabeyeballs. With Modi’s popularityrising by the day, they hitchedtheir fortunes to the man againstwhom they had run a campaignof hate and calumny.

Newspapers, which take theircue from news television, havebegun to sing a different tune.True, the odd opeditorialberating Modi and questioninghis proven track record stillsurfaces. It is equally true thatnews television lapses into Modi-baiting whenever theopportunity arises. But there isno denying that Modi is nowlooked at differently, almostreverentially. The establishmentwallahs know the tricks ofsurvival and those who live onthe crumbs from Delhi’s hightable usually manage to land ontheir feet no matter who comes topower.

Meanwhile, Teesta Setalvad, the ‘human rights’ activist wholed the most ferocious campaignagainst Modi, now stands

exposed as a fraud and atrickster. Victims whose interestsshe claimed she was protectinghave turned against her, charging her with feathering hernest at the cost of their misery. The Special Investigation Teamset up by the Supreme Court hasabsolved Modi of all chargesleveled against him (and henceit has been slammed by thosewho profited from the ‘HateModi Industry’). Representativesof self-righteous foreignGovernments that had‘boycotted’ Modi are nowtripping over each other to gethis darshan and for a photo-opwhile shaking hands with him.

Times have changed. Sohave Muslim perceptions. Thisis not to say Muslims will stopexercising their veto instead ofcasting their vote, but tounderscore the fact that more andmore Muslims are nowclamouring for what Modi hasdelivered in Gujarat: Peace andprosperity. The response toModi’s reach-out to the Muslimcommunity when he undertookthe Sadbhavana fast wastentative; it is now firm andpalpable. Akbar endorsing Modiand joining the BJP bothhighlights this point and sendsout this message.

It is immaterial whomMuslims vote for (though BJPwould obviously like them tovote for the party’s nominees) inthis election. So long as they donot exercise their veto, and solong as they demand prosperitywhile shunning poverty in theguise of faux safety, Modi canclaim that he has won and hisdetractors have lost.

Surrender and graceIf you want to drink water at

the tap, you will have to bendyourself. Even so, if you want todrink the spiritual nectar ofimmortality which flows from theholy lips of the Guru, you will haveto be an embodiment of humilityand meekness. The lower nature ofthe mind must be thoroughlyregenerated. The aspirant says tohis preceptor: “I want to practiseYoga. I want to enter into NirvikalpaSamadhi. I want to sit at your feet.I have surrendered myself to you”.But he does not want to change hislower nature and habits, oldcharacter, behaviour, and conduct.

One’s individual ego, preconceived notions, pet ideas andprejudices, and selfish interestsshould be given up. All these standin the way of carrying out theteachings and instructions of one’sGuru. Lay bare to your Guru thesecrets of your heart. The more youdo so, the greater the Guru’ssympathy, which means anaccession of strength to you in thestruggle against sin and temptation.

The aspirant, before he desiresthe grace of the Master, shoulddeserve it. The supply of divinegrace comes only when there is areal thirst in the aspirant, and whenhe is fit to receive it. The Guru’sgrace descends upon those whofeel utterly humble and faithful tohim. Faith is confidence and trust inthe Guru. Faith is firm conviction ofthe truth of what is declared by thepreceptor by way either oftestimony or authority, without anyother evidence or proof. The disciplewho has faith in the Guru argues

not, thinks not, reasons not, andcogitates not. He simply obeys, obeys, and obeys. The disciple’sself-surrender to the Guru and theGuru’s grace are interrelated.Surrender draws down the Guru’sgrace, and the grace of the Gurumakes the surrender complete.

The Guru’s grace works in theform of Sadhana in the aspirant. Ifan aspirant sticks to the pathtenaciously, this Is the grace of theGuru. If he resists when temptationassails him, this is the grace of theGuru. If people receive him with loveand reverence, this is the grace ofthe Guru. If he gets all bodily wants, this is the grace of the Guru. If hegets encouragement and strengthwhen he is in despair anddespondency, this is the grace ofthe Guru. If he gets over the body-consciousness and rests in his ownAnanda Svarupa (the form of bliss),this is the grace of the Guru. Feelhis grace at every step, and besincere and truthful to him.How the Guru teaches

The Guru teaches throughpersonal example. The day-to-dayconduct of the Guru is a living idealto the disciple who is observant. Thelife of the Guru is a living sermon tothe sincere disciple. By constantcontact, the disciple imbibes thevirtues of his Guru. He is mouldedgradually. Study the ChhandogyaUpanishad. You will find that Indrastayed with Prajapati for a period ofa hundred and one years and servedhim whole-heartedly.

The Guru alone knows thespiritual needs of his disciples. Hewill give Upadesha (spiritual advice)according to the disciple’s

temperament and evolution. How the Guru tests

The Sadguru communicatesthe secret knowledge of theUpanishads to his trusted disciplesonly after repeated entreaty andsevere testing. Sometimes, the Gurumay even tempt his disciple, butthe latter should overcome thetemptation by firm faith in the Guru.

In days of yore, the tests werevery severe. Once Gorakhnath askedsome of his students to climb up atall tree and throw themselves, headdownwards, on a very sharp tridentor Trisula. Many faithless studentskept quiet. But one faithful studentat once climbed up the tree withlightning speed and hurled himselfdownwards. He was protected bythe invisible hand of Gorakhnath. Hehad immediate Self-realisation. TheGuru tests the students in variousways. Some students misunderstandhim and lose their faith in him. Hencethey are not benefited.Four classes of disciples

The best disciple is like petrolor aviation spirit. Even from a greatdistance, he will instantly react tothe spark of the Guru’s Upadesha. The second class disciple is likecamphor. A touch awakens his innerspirit and kindles the fire ofspirituality in him. The third classof disciple is like coal. The Guru hasto take great pains in order toawaken the spirit in him. The fourthclass of disciple is like a plantainstem. No efforts will be of any availover him. Whatever the Guru maydo, he remains cold and inert.

The disciple has but to cleansehimself, purify himself, and makehimself a perfectly faultless pieceof marble, and placing himself underthe expert guidance of his Master, allow to be carved out and chiselledinto the image of God.
