In brief


Syros Island,the ideal set…

Because of its nodal location,Hermoupolis, the capital town ofSyros Island and the county of theCyclades had been an administra-tive, commercial, financial andcultural centre during the 19thcentury. That period of time left itsmarks on the island, especially in themajestic Hermoupolis, with itsneoclassical features, themuseums, the Apollo Theatre and itsvarious beautiful corners thatcompose a unique set for inspirationand creativity.

In the west side of Hermoupolis, onthe catholic hill, there is anothersmall town called Ano Syros. It is anauthentic testimony of theMedieval times, with narrow aleysand Aegean-style, white-colouredhouses with colourful flowerpots andbalconies with breathtaking view.

Moreover, the coastal villages in thesouthern part of the island, as well asthe rural villages of the rockynorthern part Apano Meria, add tothe authentic character of the island.

Considering the variety in thelandscape and its unique charac-teristics, the Syros AccordionFestival could not take place onlyin one area of the island. Thus,every evening, concerts of variousmusic genres invite the guests toexplore different spots of theisland and live a memorablemusic experience.

A capital, historically and geographically


A hospitable island

The Syros Island can be easily reached. There are ferry boat connections with theport of Piraeus, the rest of the islands of the Cyclades and the Dodecaneseislands. Every year the participants of the Festival have special offers intheir ferry boat tickets by the Blue Star Ferries agency. Moreover, there isairplane connection with Athens and Thessaloniki.

The tourist infrastructures are well developed and guests may enjoy apleasant stay in the island. In the Festival’s website there is information andaddresses of hotels and restaurants who support the Festival providing the par-ticipants with special offers and lower prices.

Additionally, we provide the participants, the guest musicians and the volunteerswith accommodation at the Saint Paul Mansion in Posidonia Village. This is ahistoric building, surrounded by gardens with pine trees, which becomes for awhole week the meeting point of musicians, mainly accordionists, from allover Greece and Europe.

More than 40% of the Syros Accordion Festival’s participants rejoin every year.During its seven years of life, 15 863 people visited the island and attended theFestival. In a few words we could say that the Syros Accordion Festival is…

A friendly music meeting

For a whole week, artists, professional andamateur musicians, students, musiclovers who offer volunteer work for thefestival have a chance to meet in a neo-classical mansion and share theirknowledge and inspiration all day long.

That is the place where the seminars of thefestival take place. There are also lecturesopen to the public, as well as an instrumentexhibition and an accordion maintenance andrepair workshop.

An opportunity for free expressionand active participation

The Syros Accordion Festival is organized in such away that anyone can attend and express themselveswithout discriminations related to age or music skills. The seminar participants have the chance to offervolunteer work during the week helping the coordi-nators in the everyday tasks (e.g. the preparation andserving of the meals) and get to know each other.

Moreover, the participants are encouraged toplay in public, during two events that are dedicatedto free expression:

aan open stage, where they have the chance tomeet and play together with the local artists andmusicians,

aa music event, where they form small groupsand perform in various spots in the centre ofHermoupolis. That is followed by a gathering ofall the participants and tutors at the centralsquare of the town and a public presentation ofthe work they did during the seminar.

An event of high quality, accessible to everyone

Because of the fact that musicians and artists usually enjoy and desire suchkind of meetings, where they can share and exchange knowledge and experi-ence, many distinguished professionals support the Syros Accordion Festival.

The majority of the Festival’s events have a free entrance. However, someevents require a ticket, because there are expenses that need to be covered. In thoseevents, we try to keep the ticket price as low as possible, usually not exceeding10€. The expenses of the participants of the seminars (including the seminar fee, theaccommodation with half-board for seven days and ferry boat tickets) usually donot exceed 280€.

Ourios Anemosorganised by a non-profit

Ourios Anemos is the name of the non-profit association that was founded just a

month ago, in August 2013 in Syros, and its goal is to take action in fields related

to culture, environment and education both in Greece and abroad.

Ourios Anemos was created by the necessity of artists and individuals, who live in

Syros, to put in action their ideas and plans in a legal, flexible and independent way.

Its main goals are:

● promoting cultural and artistic events

● creating networks among artists

● environmental actions

● increasing the public’s awareness on issues related to culture, art

and environment

● educational actions to stimulate creativity and environmental sensi

bility both for children and adults

Ourios Anemos is hoping to become a core for individuals or groups who have

beautiful ideas for cultural events, in the broad sense of the term, so that they

become reality and source of joy both for them and the society.

If you have ideas and proposals related to the above, we will be glad to hear them

and find together a way to make them reality.
