Why warm waterunderfloor heating?

Underfloor systems work usingradiant heat rather than convection,so the warmth is evenly spreadthrough the room with no draughtsor cold spots. This even distributionof heat also means that thetemperature of the water you arecirculating is much lower than witha radiator system – less heat inputis required to maintain a comfortabletemperature. And the heat that youdo use is concentrated where youneed it, rather than wasted inheating dead space above yourhead. The benefits are clear.

Running costs can be up to a thirdless compared with radiators.

Radiators transfer heat into a roomby convection from a hot metalsurface. Because the surface of theradiator is small in comparison withthe volume of the room, it needs ahigh heat input and doesn’t spreadthe heat evenly. Heat distribution isby convection currents in the air –also known as draughts. Andbecause hot air rises, the floor iscold and space above your head isthe hottest part of the room.

These convection currents alsomake sure that all the things youdon’t want circulated – germs, dust,

pollen and so on – are constantlyspread throughout the building.

Underfloor heating doesn’t work byconvection, it works by radiatingheat from its surface. This radiantheat not only warms up the floor,like the sun’s rays the heat radiatingfrom the floor also warms up thewalls and furnishings in the room.They in turn radiate this energy assecondary heat. Everything in theroom gets warm and acts like anextra heater – creating an even,comfortable environment with nohot spots or cold draughts.

In rooms with high ceilings, such aschurches, sports halls or industrialunits the benefits are even greater.With radiator systems most of theheat is immediately wasted as itrises to the ceiling. With anunderfloor heating system thetemperature actually decreases asyou get higher as all the heat isconcentrated where it is needed –where the people are. And inrooms with large floor areasradiator systems simply can’t heatthe centre of the floor effectively.

The essential facts of underfloor heating

The basic arguments for underfloorheating are simple:• It can cut running costs by 30%• It is the most comfortable form

and easy to control

Underfloor heating is healthier too. It reduces moisture levels in floorcoverings, which reduces microbialgrowth and forces dust mites to thesurface where they are removed byregular cleaning. Because there is noconvection-driven air flow the ingressand circulation of bacteria andpotential allergens such as pollenand fungal spores are reduced.

Underfloor heating systems are installed within the floor of

the building – so there are no visible components in the room. A network of specially-manufactured, high-performance,cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) orpolybutylene (PEB) pipe isincorporated in one of a number of different supporting systems.

In most commercial buildings andmany residential developments thewarm water pipe system is cast intothe solid concrete floor. There arealso Ferroli solutions availablewhich may be built into asuspended timber-joisted floor, or a floating floor system which canoverlay concrete or timber floors.

Water is heated by a Ferroli boilerand is circulated through the pipesat a ‘warm’ 45-60˚C which heats the floor to a temperature of

23-25˚C – turning the whole floorinto a low intensity emitter ofradiant heat.

Once circulated through a networkof pipe circuits in the floor thewater returns to the boiler at alower temperature to be reheated.Because Ferroli takes responsibilityfor the complete boiler and pipesolution we ensure that the returnwater is matched to the boiler’scapability and achieves themaximum operating efficiency ofthe boiler. This can make significantextra savings in energy costs.

The whole system can be controlled in a number of waysdepending on requirements. These include unitary systems and multi-zone systems that allowheat levels to be varied as requiredthroughout a building.

The underfloor heating system operates most cost-effectively when it is matched with the right FerroliHigh Efficiency boiler. The low return temperature ofthe water allows the condensing system to use everyavailable unit of heat. Ferroli solar collectors andcylinders can also be integrated into the underfloorheating package to give the ultimate energy-efficientheating solution.

The types of underfloor heating

Floating floors are popular because theyreduce the overall loading within thebuilding and have good acousticproperties. Underfloor heating systemsfor floating floors are based aroundinsulation panels that are pre-grooved at200mm centres to accept the heatingpipes. The grooves are designed so thatan aluminium heat diffuser plate can beinstalled on top of the pipe to transferthe heat upwards into the room.

These systems cover all types ofapplication where the heating pipes areembedded in either the structuralconcrete or screeded concrete overlay.The actual construction selected willdepend on a number of factors whichwill be taken into account by our designengineers.

Once the PEX or PB warm water pipe isfixed by clips, concrete screed is pouredgenerally to a minimum of 30mmthickness above the pipe. Ferroli can takeresponsibility for screeding as well aspipe installation.

Solid floor system

Underfloor heating can be successfullyused with suspended floors as long asthey are of a suitable type. Ferrolisystems are available for conventionaljoisted floors as well as for battensystems mounted on solid floors. If thistype of heating is to be used it should be considered early in the planning stageso that an appropriate construction canbe used.
