A Message from Gary Kelly – Chairperson It gives me great pleasure to be afforded the opportunity as Chairman of Fermanagh Learning Community to include a short piece into the Entitlement Times. The core aims of the FLC still remains the development of the curriculum at Key Stage 4 and Post 16 to meet the needs of all the learners and to inform them through our focus on CEIAG of future pathways which will allow them to make a positive contribution to the world of work. We are delighted that the community is flourishing in this area. Furthermore the FLC has been proactively working towards the joint goals this year of promoting on-line learning and developing the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) agenda, where a number of schools have been involved in the CCEA STEM Innovation Project. This year FLC Co-ordinator Mr. Dessie Gamble has been very proactive in providing shared Continuous Professional Development for teachers in the area of on-line learning. I am sure the sterling work of the FLC will continue into the future and that all of the goals of the community will ensure a brighter shared future for all young people. Dessie Gamble – Fermanagh Learning Community Coordinator I am now into my third year as Learning Community Coordinator, although this year I have been working only 3 days per week. I teach Technology and Design in Devenish College on a Tuesday and Friday – so I get the best of both worlds! I meet every 6 weeks with the three other WELB Learning Coordinators and WELB/CASS staff. It is always interesting to hear how the other communities are progressing. This year the four learning communities, Foyle, Roe Valley, Derg Mourne and Fermanagh have been looking into the provision of online language development courses.

Collaborative French Immersion Course The Collegiate, Portora, Mount Lourdes & St Michael’s College have been involved in a collaborative French immersion course, targeted at AS & A2 students studying French. The group met before Christmas for an ice-breaking day, looked at stereotypes. They then met twice after Christmas, working on various topics such as homelessness, Facebook, alcohol, French education system, etc… The last session was a 2-day residential in Gortatole with a balance of language workshops (this time targeting skills rather than topics), outdoor activities (giving a chance for students to bond and get to know each other in a different environment), French film and fun sessions. The course was very successful and both teachers and students found it of great benefit.
