GOALS

Goal! An evocative word. For some it prompts vivid images ofour national sport, of the FA Cup final, Wembley, our teamwinning and the roar of the crowd. For others the word meansa direction, a purpose, an achievement and a measure ofsuccess. Recognising the need to stir all of these aspirationswithin young people in their community, Steelway Fensecurepioneered the development of this design of a Multi UseGames Area goal over 15 years ago.

Based in the West Midlands, Steelway Fensecure constructs Multi UseGames Areas throughout the UK and overseas, that have freeunrestricted, unsupervised access. We realised that our product had tobe tough and highly resilient to meet and survive the challenges of ballcourt users. In setting that goal for ourselves, we can now look backwith a sense of achievement in the knowledge that we have set abenchmark of quality and durability, which has become the standardfor the Multisport industry.

Looking to the future we recognise that our customers want choice andthe opportunity to select the types of goals that suit their requirements. We offer you a variety of goals including 5-A-Side, junior football andhockey, with or without basket ball goals, cricket stumps and escaperoutes. Complying to the correct British and European Standard ofBSEN 15312 is important to us and should be to you. It is your onlyassurance that you are providing facilities which are safe and fullymeet stringent performance, structural and design test requirements.Within the parameters of that standard we try to accommodate designchanges to meet individual preferences.

“From our initial discussions, through tocompletion of the site installation works,I was very impressed”

GOALS

V BACKThis more modern style retains many of the originalgoal design features but may suit the restricted budget,as less work goes into the standard rear goal panels. It is also available with or without escape routes. Goal mouth 3.0m wide x 2.0m high x 900mm deep

SQUARE BACKThe square or rectangulargoal recess “footprint”maybe more appropriate incertain settings or may justsuit the preference of theindividual designer. It caneasily be adapted to includea lockable pedestrian gate.Goal mouth 3.0m wide x2.0m high x 900mm deep

CURVED BACKThis original design of goal mouth continues to bepopular. When a ball strikes the back of the goal theball is directed downwards back into the court. Thecurved roof avoids it being used as a platform. Thisstyle is available with or without escape routes. Goal mouth 3.0m wide x 2.0m high x 900mm deep

FLAT BACKToday designers areencouraged to be allinclusive in their playgroundand multisport designs.Whilst all our multisportsystems offer entrances forwheelchairs, this goal stylepermits wheelchair accessthrough the goal mouth itself.Goal 2.0m high with rearoffset panel 4.4m wide witha 1.2m wide gap either side.

VERTICAL BAR GOALThis exciting style offers ourclients an alternative and verydifferent visual affect. If youwant to develop an integratedrecreational area utilising someof the more futuristicplayground equipmentavailable today, then this styleof goal and matching fencingmay better compliment yourdesign. Goal mouth 3.0m widex 2.0m high x 900mm deep

INFILL GOALOn proposed sites where you have limited space or alimited budget then this style could be just the answer.Instead of a recessed goal mouth it offers a flat goaltarget which can be further emphasized with theinclusion of a white crossbar and goal posts.

5-A-SIDE GOALFeaturing a goal mouth of 1.2m high by 5.0m wide foradult 5–A–Side.If you are looking to encourage adults back into thepark for a game of competitive “footy” with local youthsthen this could be the style for you. Often used withsquare section fence posts to give a “True BallRebound” for the more discerning player.

Choosing the correct fencing for a Multi Use Games Areacan be confusing and quite often the right specification maybe overlooked. Deciding the right height and specificationcan make a real difference to the success of your project.

At Steelway Fensecure Ltd we understand that budget is often thedriving factor in any project. As such we are quite specific with ourclients that during the planning stages of project specification the rightbalance of price to specification ratio is achieved. Rectifying poorspecification or insufficient fence height several months/years latercan prove costly in the long term life of your Multi Use Games Area.

We have, through careful research and engineering knowledge, developed the optimum specification in our Rebound fencing. Due to the compact size of the Rebound mesh, the overall strengthis much greater than standard Weldmesh or larger mesh systems. In addition our Rebound fencing offers a better ball reboundaction and combines security with aesthetics appeal.

Providing a sufficiently durable yet attractive fencing system thatwill last for many years, without the costs of continuous repair, isoften less expensive than systems with lower initial outlay.

Where the budget does not allow for the best specification weoffer an alternative range of sports fencing systems. For full detailsplease contact our sales department.

FENCING

CURVED CORNERSCurved corners have manyadvantages, not least when itcomes to clearing up litter, fallenleaves and other debris. They are also far more userfriendly in a game situationespecially when two opposingplayers are trying to take controlof the ball.

SQUARE POSTSFor court areas whereusers want a higher qualityof play and are playing offthe fence then a “True BallRebound” is required. Ourfencing posts can bechanged to 100mm SHSsquare posts so that theRebound panels sit flushwith the post. For goalposts we recommend ourstandard round posts forsafety.

ROUND POSTS

TRANSITIONAL PANELSTransitional panels are designed to make stepping downin height look good. Transitional panels can beincorporated into all heights of fencing for full flexibility.

CRANKED TOPSWhilst the general wish is for unlimited open space, thetruth is that often good quality open spaces are few andfar between. When the area surrounding a multi usegames area is built up and the external environmentdictates the need for the fencing to both contain the balland act as a security fence, Steelway Fensecure Reboundfencing can incorporate cranked extension arms to makeclimbing that much more difficult.

ACOUSTIC TESTING

In August 2000 we appointed an independentconsulting engineer who conducted an on siteacoustic test on one of our installed Multi UseGames Areas. The results indicated that so called“Acoustic Dampers” were un-necessary andlargely ineffective. Their advice concentrated onensuring that the fittings stayed tight. Steelwayhave now incorporated their advice into ourdesign process and now use a special lockingmechanism, which reduces the risk of fittingscoming loose. This area of research anddevelopment has provided us with an accurateinsight into how acoustically friendly our MultiUse Games Areas are.

More information is available on application.

ENTRANCES

As with all enclosed games areas careful consideration shouldbe given to the type of entrance and exit points that would bestsuit your new Multi Use Games Area.

Easy access and exit to would be players is essential andwhether you require open access or a gate the opening shouldbe wide enough to permit wheelchair users to pass easily. Agap of 1.2m is commonly considered to be adequate.

Whilst many youngsters can enjoy a ball game and each otherscompany, occasionally there are problems associated with intimidationand bullying, so escape routes through a second exit on the far side ofthe court and/or through the goals is generally recommended.

Steelway Fensecure have extensive experience of working withdifferent groups and we recognise the varying preferences of facilityproviders. As such we offer a wide choice of entrances and can offeradvice as to which system would best suit your environment.

The shelter is designed in segment form that allows for a minimum seating area for 6 youths (2 segments) up to aseating area for 18 youths (6 segments) to suit any size of budget or space.

The shelters are ideal for location alongside a multi use games area or a local community area, school, park, publicopen space and even outside places of work.

The shelters are available with a table to create areas for people to do homework, read and eat their lunch andfeatures a roof cover that provides shade from the sun and partial protection from the rain. HOW TO USE Locate your project on the map

Match the colour of the square to the key

Read off the average background corrosion rate in lum per annum

Identify the minimum average galvanized coating thickness for steelwork in lum

Divide the coating thickness (average 85 lum) by the corrosion rate to obtain the expected minimum life of the galvanized coating.

This is an approximate guide and ismost relevant to static, exterior-exposed structures. Specifiers willneed to take account of any sitespecific factors which may affect thecorrosion rate.

Detailed data for individual sites andadvice on its interpretation (e.g. thepossible effects of a local micro-climate on the corrosion rateactually experienced by thegalvanized structure) is availablefrom Galvanizers Association.
