Type 6NR pulleys are made to catalogue dimensions, but modern manufacturing techniques result in there being no recess behind the Taper Lock bush, theJ dimension is then approximately equal to the small diameter of the Taper Lock bush.Dimensions in millimetres unless otherwise stated. *Non-preferred pulley sizes. Pitch diameters in italic type indicate pulleys to be used with XPZ belts only. All envelope and prime functional dimensions are correct at the time of going to publication. Non-functional dimensions may vary slightly.

Fenner Banded Belts

■ Eliminate belt whip, belt twist and beltturn over

■ Ideal for drives with pulsating loads

■ Available for ISO and RMA pulleys

■ Heat and oil resistant

On applications where pulsating or shockloads cause instability in matched sets ofWedge or V-belts, Fenner Banded beltscan provide the ideal solution.By joining together a number of belts witha tie band the banded belt has sufficientlateral rigidity to eliminate problemscaused by belts whipping or turning over, and by keeping the belts running into thegrooves in a straight line excessive jacketwear is avoided resulting in longer belt life.Fenner Banded belts can be used in FennerTaper Lock pulleys manufactured to ISOstandards but they are also available forRMA profile pulleys. When ordering Banded belts it is importantthat the correct groove profile is selected. The groove spacing i.e. dimension 'e' isgiven in the following table.

SELECTION

(a) Determine whether any pulsating loadswill be present in the drive, whichwould cause excessive vibration.

(b) Using the wedge belt selectionprocedure, select the number and sizeof belts and sizes of pulleys to suit theparticular drive*.

(c) Select a banded belt length from page13 nearest to the length found in step(b).

*RMA wedge belts and HA section V-beltsare only intended for replacementpurposes. New drives should be designedusing ISO wedge or classical section belts.

If the exact length is not listed opposite,re-calculate the centre distance using theformula below:-

C = A + A2 – B

where A = L – 0,3925 (D+d)4

B = (D – d)2

8

C = centre distance in mmD = pitch diameter of larger pulley

in mmd = pitch diameter of smaller pulley

in mmL = pitch length of belt in mm

It is normal practice to use no more thanfive belts in one band. Accumulation ofmanufacturing tolerances on pulley groovepitch (dimension 'e') can result in incorrectbelt seating when more than 5 belts areused in a single band.

Therefore when more than 5 belts areneeded use two or more bands e.g. :-

6 belts - use 2 bands of 38 belts - use 2 bands of 49 belts - use 1 band of 4 and 1 band of 5

ORDERING INSTRUCTIONS

When ordering Banded Belts it is importantto state the number of belts per band; thesection and the belt length as follows:-

Note1) Pulleys and belts defined as ISOconform exactly to BS 3790:1981.2) RMA denotes Rubber ManufacturersAssociation of America standards andoften applies to agricultural machinery.

Tensioning

Banded belts should be installed with thesame tension as for Power Plus wedgebelts (page18).The Fenner spring plunger belt tensionindicator can be used, as for individualbelts but with the same setting forcemultiplied by the number of belts in a band(2, 3, 4 or 5).A piece of rigid bar placed across the bandwidth can ensure even deflection of allbelts in the band.

PowerTwist ® Plus ™ Belting

PowerTwist Plus belting incorporates the most up-to-date materials available, giving it unique qualities ofresistance to many of the adverse working conditions that belts are subject to, and properties that weredeficient in earlier designs of link belts. These link belts are complementary to the range of Fenner Wedgeand V-Belts and are extensively used in industrial, marine, agricultural and heating & ventilation applications.

ADVANTAGES OF FENNER LINK BELTS

Adjustable to any length, adaptable to any drive

Fit the belts to the drive, not the drive to the belts.Drive elements can be located most effectively and belts installedwithout removing bearings.

No Slippage

Quick, easy length adjustment minimises belt creep to guaranteefull speed and full productivity of machines.

Minimum Inventory

Four boxes of link belting can replace hundreds of fixed length, endless V-Belts. Boxes can be stored easily, providing simplifiedvisual control of inventory.

Vibration

Fenner link belts are manufactured to extemely close tolerances. The design of the belt significantly reduces transmissible vibrationsin some applications.

Long Lasting Construction

The extreme flexibility of these belts greatly reduces belt stress, heat build up and fatigue. The construction of the belts is designedto dissipate heat.

Maximum Power Delivery

On multiple belt drives it is easy to maintain correct tension on allbelts. Each belt carries its required load, for maximum powerdelivery and longest life.

Temperature

Power Twist Plus will operate in temperatures from - 40 to 110OC.

Water, Chemical & Oil Resistance

This belt will not degrade if immersed in water or if in contact withoil, grease, agricultural chemicals and common solvents.

SPECIAL TYPES

Double V Section

For use on serpentine drives with both sides of the belt engaging invee pulley grooves.AA; BB & CC sections.

Ground Round

Designed specifically to replace round profile rubber or leather beltson "rope" drives.8mm,9.5mm, 12.5mm, 14mm & 19mm diameters.

PowerTwist Plus link V-Belts are manufactured from an exclusive, high strength urethane/polyester composite. This makesPowerTwist Plus an incredibly strong, yet flexible belt that will takeon the roughest of working conditions.

PowerTwist Plus V-Belt's unique cross-lock design gives a rawedge cog construction which provides excellent durability andperformance, delivering higher power ratings than most any otherlink type V-Belts on the market. When the tension is applied to thebelt, PowerTwist Plus's cross-link design locks tightly thusproducing the lowest stretch of any link V-Belt.

PowerTwist Plus V-Belts save time on installation because nospecial tools are required, all that is needed is a quick twist bothto couple or uncouple the belt and this is easily achieved inseconds. Tests prove that PowerTwist Plus V-Belts are the mostversatile link V-Belt on the market today.

Available from stock in Z, A, B and C sections, for use

in standard dual groove pulleys.

SELECTION

To design a Fenner Power Twist Plus drive simply refer to the normal selection procedure ([insert]) utilising the power ratings given above.

INSTALLATION

See page 16

SUPER-T-LINK

Super-T-Link is a 'T' rivet link belt which offers most of the benefits of the PowerTwist Plus but with significant extra power rating, toperform on the majority of wedge belt drives. This belting can be used with confidence as an emergency replacement for wedge belts or to achieve, on new wedge belt drives, theconvenience and tolerance of harsh ambient conditions associated with PowerTwist Plus.It is available in SPA, SPB and SPC sections, and must be used with pulleys having appropriate groove depth e.g. ISO dual-groove pulleys.

Pitch Length

PowerTwist®Plus™ Installation & Tensioning

Determine the required pitch length of the belt. MeasurePowerTwist Plus from the second empty hole on the last link to theend tab. Subtract one link in every 24 for Z, A, B sections, one linkin every 20 for C section. For multiple belt drives, count the numberof links in the initial belt and make additional belts the samenumber of links. Lay the original belt on a table and lay theadditional belts side by side to ensure the correct length andmatched sets.

1. HOW TO MEASURE

Correct way to measure:PowerTwist Plus – end of tab to first empty holes (right to left, above)

2. ASSEMBLY – PowerTwist Plus

3.INSTALLATION

Make PowerTwist Plus belts to the correct pitch length and

then install them as you would an endless belt.

1. Move motor to reduce centre distance.2. Place all belts in correct position.

Where it is necessary to thread belts through confined spaces,or around shafts without moving bearings, it is possible tomake the belts "in site". Some reduction in pulley centredistance is still necessary for ease of assembly.

3. Move motor back into position, applying correct tension.4. Secure motor tightly.

Method of Belt tensioning using Fenner Belt Tension indicator

1. Calculate the deflection distance in mm on a basis of 16mmper metre of span.Centre Distance (m) x 16 = Deflection (mm)

2. Set the lower marker ring at the deflection distance required inmm on the lower scale.

3. Set the upper marker ring against the bottom edge of the toptube.

4. Place the belt tension indicator on top of the belt at the centreof span, and apply a force at right angles to the belt deflectingit to the point where the lower marker ring is level with the topof an adjacent belt*.

5. Read off the force value indicated by the top edge of the uppermarker ring.

6. Compare this force to the kgf value shown in the tableopposite.

7. If a Fenner Belt Tension Indicator is not available, a springbalance and rule will suffice.

CAUTION

When properly installed, initial tension may appear excessive.Tension drops to normal when drive begins to run.

4. RETENSIONING

It is important to retension all drives after an initial run-in period. On fixed centre drives, it may be necessary to remove a link fromeach belt for proper retensioning.

TENSIONING FORCES

Z 56 to 190 10 to 15 1,0 to 1,5

A 80 to 140 15 to 20 1,5 to 2,0

B 125 to 200 25 to 35 2,6 to 3,6

C 200 to 400 45 to 65 4,6 to 6,6

*NOTE: For single belt drives a straight edge should be placedacross the two pulleys to act as a datum for measuring theamount of deflection.

If the measured force falls within the values given, the driveshould be satisfactory. A measured force below the lower valueindicates under-tensioning.

A new drive should be tensioned to the higher value to allow forthe normal drop in tension during the running-in period.

After the drive has been running for 30 minutes, the tensionshould be checked and re-adjusted to the higher value, ifnecessary.

Always work with the belt inside out, tabspointing outward

Place end tab through two links atonce.

Flex belt further and insert secondtab through end link by twisting tabwith thumb.

Ensure tab returns to position acrossbelt. Reverse belt so tabs run inside.

5. DISASSEMBLY – PowerTwist Plus

Turn belt inside out with tabspointing outwards. Bend back as faras possible; hold with one hand.Twist one tab 90º parallel with slot.

Pull end of link over tab. Rotate belt end with tab at 90º to lineof belt.

Pull belt end through two links.

Fenner Wedge & V-Belt Tensioning Instructions

"ONE SHOT" TENSIONING

Fenner Belts are built to ensureprecise inherent length and to staymatched during storage and on the drive.Over many years , the principle of "one-shot" tensioning has been verified bysuccessful drives the world over.

■ Install the belts to be a snug fit aroundthe pulleys.

■ Spin the pulleys 3-4 revolutions to bedbelts into the pulley grooves.(Note: if done manually, beware offinger entrapment between belts andpulleys)

■ Tension the belts to the 1.25x settingforces from the table.

■ Run the drive under load for 15-20minutes.

■ Stop the drive, check tension & reset tothe basic value (standard vee andwedge belts) if necessary.

CRE Plus & Quattro Plus belts shouldbe reset to the 1.25x value.

With a drive that is properly designed for theapplication there should be no need for furtherattention during the life of the belts.

For short centre distance drives where thedeflection of the belt is too small tomeasure accurately it is recommendedthat both deflection and setting force bedoubled.

Method of belt tensioning using Fenner

Belt Tension Indicator

■ Calculate the deflection in mm on abasis of 16mm per metre of centredistance. Centre distance (metres) x16 = deflection (mm).

■ Set the lower marker ring at thedeflection distance required in mm onthe lower scale.

■ Set the upper marker ring against thebottom edge of the top tube.

■ Place the belt tension indicator on topof the belt at the centre of span, andapply a force at right angles to the belt, deflecting it to the point where thelower marker ring is level with the topof an adjacent belt.

■ Read off the setting force valueindicated by the top edge of the uppermarker ring.

■ Compare this force to the kgf valueshown in the table.

■ If a Fenner Belt Tension Indicator is notavailable, a spring balance and rule willsuffice.

■ With banded belts use a bar across theband width to ensure even distributionof the force and divide the forcemeasured by the number of belts in theband for comparison with the values inthe table above.

NOTES:

For single belt drives a straight edge should beplaced across the two pulleys to act as adatum for measuring the amount of deflection.

If the measured force falls within thevalues given, the drive should besatisfactory. A measured force below thebasic value indicates under-tensioning.

A new drive should be tensioned to the1.25x value to allow for the normal drop intension during the running-in period.

After the drive has been running for 15–20minutes, under load the tension should bechecked and re-adjusted, if necessary.

TROUBLE SHOOTING

Small radial cracks on belt side and baseGenerally caused by slippage due toinsufficient belt tension, but excessive heat

and/or chemical fumes can also cause thesame problem.

Belt swelling or softeningCaused by excessive contamination by oil, certain cutting fluids, water or rubbersolvent.

Whip during runningOften caused by incorrect tensioning, particularly on long centre drives. If a slightlyhigher (or lower) tension does not cure theproblem there may be a critical vibrationfrequency in the system which requires re-design or use of banded belts. Consult FPTTechnical Services.

Pulleys

Pulley groove wear can cause rapid beltfailure. Check grooves for wear with aFenner groove gauge.

Installation & Operation of Wedge & V-Belt Drives

■ TENSIONING PULLEYS

If tensioning (jockey) pulleys are to beused on wedge belt drives, they mustbe grooved pulleys working on theinside of the drive, preferably on theslack side. The pulley should bepositioned as close as possible to thelarge pulley. Flat tensioning pulleys, bearing on the outside of the drive arepermissible only with vee and not withwedge belts. They should be positionedwithin one third of the centre distancefrom the small pulley. The tensioning pulley must have at leastthe same diameter as the small pulleyof the drive.

Tensioning pulley movemement mustallow for passing the belts over theoutside diameter of one of the drivepulleys on installation, and should alsoallow for belt stretch/bedding in.

The modern wedge belt drive is ahighly efficient power transmissionmedium, but optimum performancewill not be achieved without correcttension and alignment.

1Angularmisalignment

2Compositemisalignment

4Correct installation -both shafts and pulleysare parallel and inalignment.

3Axialmisalignment

TAPER LOCK

All Fenner vee and wedge belt pulleys useTaper Lock shaft fixing. Detailedinstructions for fitting and dismountingTaper Lock products are included withTaper Lock bushes.

Although comparatively old in principletoday's belt drive is an extremely efficientmethod of transmitting power betweenprime mover and machinery.

It owes its present high performancestandards to many years of research anddevelopment by engineers andtechnologists, leading to significantrefinements in materials and processes.

To derive maximum benefit from suchadvances it is important that the simpleinstallation and operation procedures setout here are closely followed. Makingthese routines standard practice willensure optimum performance and long,trouble-free life from Fenner belt drives.

INSTALLATION

■ PULLEYS

Before assembling the drive, check thepulley grooves are free from scores orsharp edges, and all dimensionsconform to the relevant standard.

Drive installation is straightforward withTaper Lock – but follow all steps on theinstallation leaflet provided with everyTaper Lock bush.

■ ALIGNMENT

Good alignment of pulleys is importantto avoid belt flank wear. The diagramsopposite show some of the commonalignment faults.

Pulley misalignment should not exceed1/2 0 angular and 10mm / metre drivecentre distance, axial.

A laser alignment device is available, which facilitates quick, easy andaccurate pulley alignment - consult FPT.

■ BELT INSTALLATION

When the pulleys have been correctlypositioned on the shafts, the belts canbe installed to complete the drive.

The drive centre distance should bereduced prior to the installation of thebelts so that they may be fitted withoutthe use of force. Under nocircumstances must belts be prised intothe grooves. Belts and pulley groovescan easily be damaged by using sharptools to stretch the belts over the pulleyrim.

The installation allowance given in thetable opposite is the minimumrecommended reduction in centredistance for the various belt sectionsand lengths to allow for correct fitting.

The take-up allowance given in thesame table should be added on to thecalculated centre distance to allow forbelt stretch/bedding in.

■ GUARDS

Where guards are necessary it isdesirable to use mesh materials topermit adequate ventilation.

Guards should be generously sized toallow for incidental belt flap.

Synchronous Belt Drives 21

Torque Drivelus

• State of the art power ratings.

• Compact drive package - reduced weight.

• Quiet operation.

• Accuracy of positioning.

• Excellent tooth jump resistance.

• Runs on standard HTD pulleys.

In the mid 1990s, Torque Drive Plus (MR) wasintroduced to give significantly enhancedpower capacity over HTD (M) belt drivesystems, with lower noise levels and lowerbacklash.

Continuous development work has nowproduced Fenner Torque Drive Plus 2, with allthese attributes yet up to 50% further powercapacity.

Designated MGT, these belts are available in8mm and 14mm pitches, with the samestandard widths and lengths as HTD and TDP,and operate in standard HTD pulleys.

They allow design of lighter, more compact, more cost-effective drive packages.

Alternatively, their use on existing HTD or TDPdrives will give longer service life.

Torque Drive Plus 2 is the ultimate in rubbersynchronous belts.

The Fenner Torque Drive Plus 2 drive systemconforms to the ISO 13050 standard.

C Belt teeth are precisely formed and accurately spaced to ensure quiet, efficient engagement with pulley grooves. They are made of medium hardness chloroprene and are bonded integrally with the belt backing.

D Low friction woven nylon facing protectstooth surfaces from wear and aids quiet, efficient running.

TORQUE DRIVE PLUS 2 BELTS

The three principal dimensions of a belt are:

pitch pitch length width

and are used in this order as a designatione.g. 8MGT-1120-30.Belt pitch is the distance in millimetresbetween two adjacent tooth centres asmeasured on the pitch line of the belt.Belt pitch length is the total length of the belt(circumference) in millimetres as measuredalong the pitch line. The theoretical pitch lineof a belt lies within the tensile member.

HTD Drives

FENNER HTD

This development of the original Timing Drive is offered in a range ofpitches 5mm, 8mm and 14mm. Comprehensive choice of beltwidths and lengths combine with an optimised range of Taper Lockpulleys to suit general industrial needs.

Drives can be designed by simple catalogue selection methods togive more compact drives, less noise and lower bearing loads thanwith classical Timing Drives.

The Fenner HTD drive system conforms to the ISO 13050 standard

Fenner HTD drives offer the technical and economical benefits ofan established product range with proven performance and worldwide availability.

Fenner HTD belts have a curvlinear tooth form giving a moreuniform distribution of shear stresses within the teeth and atransition of tooth loads to the tensile members in the belt whichsignificantly improves upon classical Timing Belts.

Timing Drives & Belts

CLASSICAL TIMING DRIVES

Components for the original Timing Drivesystem are still available.

Belts and pulleys for L(Light or 3/8" pitch) andH (Heavy or 1/2" pitch) drives are availablefrom stock as listed on pages 119 to 121whilst the table below includes XL (eXtraLight) and XH (eXtra Heavy) belts which are

readily available but not always from stock.

H pitch belts of 3" width are available but notfrom stock.

Order by catalogue codes shown on thefollowing tables.

Fenner Timing Belt drive componentsconform to ISO 5296 and to BS 4548.

Drive powers of up to 50 kW can be

accommodated and most of the pulleys useTaper Lock bushes for shaft fixing.

It is anticipated that the great majority ofnew drive requirements can best besatisfied with one of the more modernsynchronomous drive systems. Should drivedesign details be required – consult FPT.

NOTE: Excessive belt tension will reduce belt and bearing lives andmay increase drive noise levels. For fixed centre applicationstension may be applied by an idler pulley (see note on Idler Pulleys)or consult FPT for precise fixed centre dimensions. Drive supportframeworks must be rigid to avoid flexure resulting in centredistance reduction and consequent tooth jumping, particularly onhigh torque starts.

Installation Instructions – All Drives

BELT INSTALLATION

Provision should be made for adjustment of the drive centredistance to allow for installation of the belt around the pulleyswithout damage, and subsequent tensioning. A belt should never beforced over pulley flanges as internal belt damage will result. The following tables offer guidance as to the necessaryadjustments for installation and also for applying appropriatepre-tension.

PULLEY ALIGNMENT

Misalignment of drive pulleys results in unequal tension across thebelt width and extreme edge wear. Pulley alignment should beproved using a straight-edge or laser device, and shafts checked forparallelism.Misalignment on any synchronous drive should not exceed 1/4O

angular or 5mm/metre centre distance parallel.Drive support frameworks must be rigid to avoid flexure causingshaft misalignment under drive forces.Flexure can result in tooth jumping during high torque starts, particularly if misalignment is present.

IDLER PULLEYS

Grooved idler pulleys can be used on the inside of all synchronousbelts.Flat (not crowned) idlers can be used on the outer surface ofClassical Timing, HTD and TDP2 belts. Wherever possible, idlers should operate on the slack span of abelt, and arc of contact should be kept to a minimum.Idler pulleys should be of equal or greater diameter than the smallerof the drive pulleys.Spring loaded idler pulleys are not normally recommended.

TAPER LOCK

Most of the synchronous pulleys/sprockets featured in this sectionuse Taper Lock shaft fixing. For detailed instructions on the fitting and dismounting of Taper Lockproducts see Shaft Fixings page [insert].

INSTALLATION TENSION

Synchronous belt drives operate by positive meshing and do not requirehigh installed belt tensions.

For optimum performance, however, belts should be installed with apre-tension suitable for the envisaged drive duty, derived from theformulae below.

Where a range is indicated, the lower value will be suitable for lightlyloaded, smooth running drives, whereas drives subject to high shockloads and/or frequent starts should be tensioned to the higher level.Belt pre-tension is usually achieved by drive centre distance extensionand checked by applying a setting force F (N) at mid belt span sufficientto deflect the belt a distance d (mm) related to the length of the spanS (metres).

It is necessary to ensure that the force is applied at right angles to thebelt span, and evenly across the belt width.

A Fenner Belt Tension Indicator may be used, in conjunction with apiece of rigid bar laid across the face of the belt at mid-span.

4. Clean shaft and fit hub to shaft as oneunit and locate in position desired, remembering that bush will nip theshaft first and then hub will be slightlydrawn on to the brush.

5. Using a hexagon wrench tightenscrews gradually and alternately totorque shown in table below.

6. Hammer against large-end of bush, using a block or sleeve to preventdamage. (This will ensure that the bushis seated squarely in the bore.) Screwswill now turn a little more. Repeat thisalternate hammering and screwtightening once or twice to achievemaximum grip on the shaft.

7. After drive has been running under loadfor a short time stop and checktightness of screws.
