The spread of Phytophthora ramorum in larch in southwest England has raised a number of challenges for forestry, the latest of which is the threat to the future of jobs that rely on the softwood resource . ConFor has published a report which analyses the consequences of a failure to replace lost softwoods and proposes giving forest owners a balanced incentive to restock infected areas with productive conifers . This report has been sent to Jim Paice, England forestry minister, Forestry Commission and selected MPs in southwest England, for discussion .

The report, Green Trees for Green Jobs: The Threat to Productive forestry from Phytophthora ramorum, outlines the scale of the issue. At the beginning of 2011, owners of more than 2200 hectares of larch, had been served with statutory notices obliging them to fell infected trees, and that area is growing.

Confor’s Chief Executive Stuart Goodall commented: “There is a real risk that the loss of conifer resource is greatly accelerated by the distorting effect of current re-stocking grants, with the

Lantra recently announced that they have been appointed to accredit the Investors in People programme to agricultural businesses in England .

Investors in People is a business improvement tool which links staff development with increased business profitability and levels of service. Investors in People supports and accredits employers that follow a structured business development programme. Research shows that the Investors in People programme helps improve the financial performance of a business, by helping them continually strive to deliver quality products and services.

Lantra is one of five newly approved centres, and is the first Sector Skills Council (SSC) to have this opportunity and responsibility.

Peter Martin, Lantra’s Chief Executive, said: “Investors in People helps businesses become more competitive, dynamic and professional which is why we believe in the programme. We don’t just believe in it though, we also live by it. We have been strong supporters and promoters of Investors in People since we were first accredited in 1995.

Stuart continued, “We recognise that there can be specific environmental benefits from converting a limited area of conifers to restore ancient woodland, but P. ramorum changes the playing field by accelerating the loss of conifers and undermining efforts to compensate for losses through new planting. Changed circumstances require fresh thinking and we will be pursuing this re-balancing with government.”

John Hayes MP, Minister of State for further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning said: “The refreshed Investors in People network will offer greater choice for organisations wishing to achieve or maintain their Investors in People status. I’m delighted that Lantra will be part of it.”

cameRon aGRees it’s time to Get BRitain BuildinGPrime Minister David Cameron recently encouraged the need to get Britain building again as latest gross domestic product (GDP) figures were knocked by a sharp fall in construction . The Prime Minister adopted the building industry’s campaign slogan when he expressed concern about the latest output figures which showed the overall economy grew by just 0 .5% during the first quarter of 2011 .

Get Britain Building (GBB) is a pan-construction industry campaign determined to get Government to recognise the value of the sector to the nation and to use it to rebuild the UK economy.

Speaking at Prime Minister’s Questions, David Cameron said: “What’s happening in the construction industry is disappointing. “We do need to get Britain building again and that’s why we are introducing the new homes bonus.” He added: “But what is encouraging in the figures is that the British economy is growing once again, manufacturing is up, exports are up and we are seeing a rebalancing of the economy.”

Mike Leonard, spokesperson for GBB and Director of the Modern Masonry Alliance, said: “The Get Britain Building campaign launched in 2009 has prepared a Plan B, which sets out why investing in construction can create 2.5 million jobs and positive growth in GDP.”

He added: “With 5 million people on the housing waiting list and building material manufacturing capacity and skills being eroded we call on Mr Cameron to turn his fine words into positive action. Our industry is ready and willing to respond.”

A new range of machine stretch films launched by Polythene UK promises to provide the highest film yields in Europe .

The machine stretch films are designed to be used with the two types of pallet

RanGe oF machine stRetch Films PRovide the hiGhest Yields in euRoPewrappers that are currently being used in the market place today, these being the ‘Standard core break’ turntable, and the ‘Power pre-stretch’ turntable.

for the ‘Standard core break’ machines the market typically supplies a standard machine film, which is approximately 1,700 meters per roll. However, Polythene UK’s new machine stretch film for this type of pallet wrapper, self-titled ‘fold over pre-stretched machine film,’ provides nearly double that per a roll.

James Woollard, Polythene UK’s Managing Director explains: “for the ‘Standard core break’ turntables we

stretch our machine film from 20mu to 10mu, which results in approximately 3,000 meters per roll.”

Polythene UK’s other machine stretch film (‘300% power stretch film’) is suitable for the ‘Power pre-stretch’ turntables, again providing the user with a very cost effective solution.

the scottish Woodlands student excellence aWaRdsThe Scottish Forestry Trust is delighted to announce the establishment of a new award to recognise excellence in the quality and relevance of the output from Trust funded PhD Studentships . The Scottish Woodlands Student Excellence Award will provide a cash award of £250 per recipient as a result of funding provided by Scottish Woodlands Ltd .

Colin Mann, Managing Director of Scottish Woodlands Ltd and a Trustee of The Scottish forestry Trust, said, “Although the Trust was established in 1983, in 1987 it benefited greatly when SWOA gifted to the Trust £1.35 million of capital which it raised from the management buy-out of what has now become Scottish Woodlands Ltd Consequently, it is very fitting that our Company should make this award in

recognition of the very best completed postgraduate studentships”

Bob Stubbs, Director of the Scottish forestry Trust said “We are extremely grateful to Scottish Woodlands Ltd for this generous funding. The Trust has supported some very worthwhile projects over the years and this additional award will help to recognise the non-inconsiderable effort by students to

produce excellent quality, relevant outputs from their studies.”

The decision to make an award will be made by the Trust’s Projects and Research Committee and a further announcement of the first winner will be made in the next few months.

a successful design and build bid, Stride Treglown was appointed for Phase 1 which went on to receive the Chairman’s Award at the LABC South West Business Building Excellence Awards, an early indication of the project’s significance in the town’s renaissance.

Teamed with Dean & Dyball Construction, Phase 1 included expanding the quay by an additional 3000sqm through a development platform to provide larger service areas. The project team then erected an industrial building divided into units for office suites and retail.

Phase 2 was then undertaken by Stride

Treglown and Mansell Construction, which saw the demolition of up to 75% of the existing building and the construction of the fish market hall.

Alastair Wilson, Regional Director at Stride Treglown, added; “To be part of the regeneration of such a well-loved port as well as receiving the comments and praise along the way has been fantastic. We hope locals, traders and visitors will continue to enjoy and be proud of the new look quay for years to come.”

Plastic Surgeon, cosmetic repair specialists and experts in material and building product repairs is pleased to announce they have formalised an arrangement with a North West RSL to carry out all necessary minor cosmetic repairs internally and externally to its stock of over 18,000 homes .

Initially, New Charter Housing Trust recruited Plastic Surgeon just to take over the work on its void properties after a rival repair company had failed to honour its commitments. By contrast, with a dozen of its highly trained finishers stationed across the region, Plastic

Surgeon proved so reliable that the client extended the scope of the work to include all of its tenanted properties as well.

Plastic Surgeon’s contract covers New Charter’s 14,000 units in Manchester’s Tameside area, 200 of which are currently unoccupied.

Void Maintenance Manager, Dawn Reynolds, explains the rationale behind the appointment: “Due to problems with a previous supplier, we were looking for a company to take on our repair requirements. When Plastic Surgeon

approached us, we were impressed by their emphasis on repair rather than replacement, which has already saved us time and money in terms of tipping charges and replacement costs. No other company could offer us this service.”

Through the use of its VisibilITy technology, Plastic Surgeon has also helped New Charter Housing also to reduce their landfill bills.

Specialist wire fabricators Siddall & Hilton Products Ltd have just scooped top prize at the Live Wire Awards ceremony, a national event focused around improving health and safety at work for people employed in the UK wire industries .

Live Wire represents a collaborative approach to innovation and improvement in health and safety. All the UK’s major wire industry employers are members, and Siddall & Hilton Products have

supported the concept since its inception four years ago.

The Live Wire Health & Safety Award aims to encourage employee participation in improvement of health and safety at all levels.

Siddall & Hilton Products’ winning presentation, made by Production Supervisor Gareth Bush and Production Operative Simon Edwards, put forward a working solution for an issue experienced

throughout the industry, namely the safe storage of rod and coil wire.

The ‘Coil Cradle’ was developed by the company to overcome a problem experienced throughout the wire industry, namely the safe storage of rod and coil. Common practice in the wire industry sees coils up to five tonnes stacked as many as five high, using wooden chocks to prevent lateral movement. This had caused an unacceptable number of ‘near

Since the announcement of the award, a number of other companies in the industry have shown interest in the coil cradles. Siddall & Hilton Products have confirmed they are happy to share information to improve health and safety measures in the wire industry and other sectors.

dhF stRive to Raise qualitY standaRds in the dooR and haRdWaRe industRYThe Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has launched a major initiative to drive up quality standards amongst its members .

The DHf, the voice of the UK door and hardware sector, is adopting a Number of strategies to raise the bar in terms of the standards of competence, customer service and quality offered by its members.

It has laid down minimum standards which apply to all DHf members involved in the manufacture, supply, installation and maintenance of their products.

Members must comply with the minimum standards by April, 2012 but a strengthened Code of Conduct that governs standards of workmanship, quality assurance, training, safety and business integrity has already been produced.

Executive Chairman Bob Perry pointed out that “raising standards” has been the catchphrase underpinning the federation’s quality drive for the past few years.

“The new minimum standards initiative for our members takes this to a completely new level,” he said. “It means that specifiers, contractors and end users will be able to obtain products and services from DHf

members confident in the knowledge they will benefit from higher quality standards.

“It is also their reassurance that DHf members they are dealing with are meeting all their obligations under forthcoming CE marking legislation.”

A number of minimum standards must be reached by members, depending on whether they are manufacturers, installers, service & repair companies or distributors. These include having third party audited factory production control schemes in place, offering compliance with harmonised standards and making declarations under the Machinery Directive. Other minimum levels to be attained by DHf members include being compliant with various repair, service and installation standards, fire door certification and demonstrating a commitment to training.

The DHf represents all the key players in industrial and commercial doors and shutters, garage doors, powered gates, metal and timber doorsets, locks and architectural ironmongery.

COMPANY NEWS

The boss of one of Britain’s leading decorative ironwork companies in the field of estate and deer park fencing has pioneered an ingenious innovation to prevent the escape of lambs . It has tested successfully for the market and is attracting widespread interest .

FoRGinG ahead on FencinGHughie Powell, Managing Director of Cotswold Decorative Ironworkers says: “It has always been a problem to prevent small lambs getting through the second and third bar of fencing and one of the traditional ways around it is to put stock netting on it which is unattractive. We always listen to our customers and this idea has come about through us talking to them about keeping lambs from escaping.”

“We are now punching holes in between the first and second rails above ground level and we have fitted a rubber grommit in each hole through which two levels of three millimetre line wire, one or both electrified wire, can be attached. It is effective and is hardly visible, certainly the neatest way of doing it. Most people prefer to electrify just the top wire with a straining wire below. We are the only company doing this.”

“It costs just £1 a metre more to buy this specially adapted fencing with a rubber grommit but once they are in place they remain there indefinitely. We mentioned this to three or four customers and there was a unanimous view it was a good idea. We tested it

with a neighbouring farmer’s lambs and it was 100 per cent effective in preventing escape. In the future all our fencing will be equipped with this innovation. We feel it is a really big step forward.”

“You can have fencing with an additional bar but it costs more and is unsightly and out of context with the classic estate look from history. The total rationale of our fencing is that it is fine and provides an aesthetic look which is what estate owners want.”

CDI is a supplier of fencing, tree guards, entrance gates and ornamental bridges to organisations like the National Trust and English Heritage as well as major estates such as Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire, Batsford Arboretum, Gloucestershire, and for Lord de Ramsey at Abbots Ripton Hall in Huntingdonshire.

Advice on automated gate systems

Automated gate safety has become the number one concern of most specifers and end users who are considering the purchase of a new automated gate .

Automated gates have evolved in terms of technology and security since they, were first seen in the UK some 30 years ago. Automated gates have long been the preferred solution to a number of problems in order to provide a secure means of ingress to and egress from secure premises.

The main risks of theft and vandalism have remained largely unchanged over the years, but others, such as terrorism have seen significant increases. Where does this leave the older automatic gates which are still in daily service today?

Unfortunately there is no realistic way to quantify the actual number of automatic gates which are installed and currently in use within the UK, or whether they are suitable for use in their present condition. This presents significant exposure and risk to businesses, with many end users being unaware of the legislation surrounding gate safety. Many of the gates are in daily service and have no regular maintenance or service agreements; in some extreme cases the origin of the manufacturer and installer who originally supplied the gate is unknown.

Safety legislation within the UK market place applies to retrospective installations of all types of machinery, including automatic gates. The reality is a large number of automated products are in daily service, but many older ones don’t comply with current legislation.

Installers and manufacturers face an increasing challenge, both in notifying clients that the likelihood of an older gate being compliant with the latest safety requirements is slim, and explaining the risks of unsafe systems. Secondly the gate user, landlord or client needs to be convinced to invest further in improving product safety, or in some extreme cases to replace a gate where an upgrade would not be cost effective.

What solutions are available for existing automated gates? This largely depends on the nature of the original product and its capacity to be cost effectively upgraded. Other options for consideration are does the gate need to be automated? If so, and if an upgrade is not a realistic way forward then serious consideration should be given to replacing the older product with an up to date automated product sourced from a reputable supplier.

decades oF automatic Gate installation leave theiR PRoBlems FoR maintaineRs in the 21st centuRY... the ‘Fit note’

I will not be writing about stress in this edition, rather the problems caused by the inability to work due to illness .

I recently read a report by Dr Robert Hampton, assessing the ‘fit note’ which was introduced a year ago and introduced the first change to reporting of medical health for nearly a hundred years. Yes, you read correctly, the ‘sick note’ has been with us since the days of Lloyd George, 99 years in fact!

Originally introduced in 1911 as part of the National Insurance Act, this piece of paper was intended to provide the right for workers to have sick pay of 10 shillings (50p) a week for up to 26 weeks. Commentators at the time were apparently concerned that this would increase idleness and malingering. As the ‘sick note’ was part of an Act of Parliament, the only way it could be changed was by Parliament itself, hence the 99 years.

Over a period, attitudes to work and its contribution to well-being have developed to the current consensus that, avoidable worklessness is at least as dangerous as smoking, in terms of morbidity and mortality. In fact at a BMA conference in 2006,

Professor Waddell commented “The Medical Sickness Certificate is one of the most powerful and potentially dangerous treatments in the GP armamentarium”

Dame Carol Black published a report in 2008 which realised that the ‘Med 3’ (official title of the ‘sick note’) was not fit for purpose and proposed a change to the, now introduced, ‘fit note’. The significant changes were;

• Offering the option that the person ‘may be fit for work’

• Prompting the GP to indicate changes that could facilitate a return to work

• Space to encourage more information about the person and facilitating a return to work

• flexibility to back-date or plan an episode of sickness absence ahead of time

• Removing the need for a GP to ‘see and examine’ the person. Allow a judgement based on a telephone consultation. Receive advice from a colleague or correspondence from a health care adviser (e.g. hospital)

The fleet of 30 vehicles will help to further enhance forest Garden’s already ‘best-in-class’ home delivery service, which delivers across the UK on behalf of its trade customers. Working from forest Garden’s centrally located Worcestershire site, the new fleet of vehicles branded ‘forest DDH’ (Delivered Direct to Home) will be manned by fully trained staff, helping to make the delivery process even smoother.

In addition to the introduction of the new home delivery fleet, forest Garden has also invested in its online presence, which now includes a new online order tracking function. Consumers will now be able to continually track the status of their delivery, including

details on their expected delivery date. The information shown via the online portal will also be supported by either a letter or text message for even greater peace of mind.

John Gomersall added: “Our delivery lead times can be as little as five days, so it’s vital that our customers are kept up-to-date on the status of their order. The new online tracking function is the perfect tool for this and means that end users can track their order from start to finish rather than having to liaise with the retail or trade outlet where they made their purchase.”

For further information, or to find out more about the ‘Home Delivery’ service call 0844 248 9801 or email info@forestgarden .co .uk .

• Request the GP to indicate if reassessment is needed before the person can return to work. If review is not required then it is implied that they are fit to return upon expiration of note.

Currently, the use and impact of the ‘fit note’ is being evaluated by The Department for Work and Pensions and their analysis will be published in due course. Anecdotally, it seems that, in general, GP’s have responded favourably, although employer’s groups are not so sure with several concerned about the GP’s lack of understanding of the specific issues at individual workplaces.

One part of the report that did surprise me was the myths that exist around the Med 3, some of these are;

• GP sickness certification is mandatory for all absence – the Med 3 has no such mandate. In fact it only provides documentary evidence for the employee to receive statutory sick pay. The fact is that management, insurance and payroll requirements have led to it becoming a de-facto requirement.

• An employer has to accept the advice on a fit note – apparently this has never been the case and it should only be one part of the management of the absent employee. If the GP has indicated that the employee ‘may be fit’ then the employer should consider if a return to work is feasible and practical. If not, then the Med 3 should be considered as a ‘sick note’.

• An employee needs a fit note to return to work - again not necessary. Apparently, the legal advice is that there has never been successful litigation regarding return to work upon expiry of a note or even before expiry.

I have, to date, had little involvement with this change in sickness reporting, if there are any readers who have, and have an opinion, I would be interested to hear from them . peter@phphealthandsafety .com

Jacksons Fencing recently joined forces with cricketing legends Mike Gatting and Steven Finn, to lend their support to the NatWest Cricket Force Showcase Event in Bognor Regis .

The company has been an active supporter of the NatWest Cricketforce campaign for six years, which is an England and Wales Cricket Board volunteering initiative aimed at rejuvenating the nation’s cricketing facilities.

NatWest Cricketforce encourages cricket supporters, their friends and families to give something back to their local community cricket club by volunteering to undertake major renovations to clubhouses and grounds, typically over a specialist ‘showcase’ weekend.

1,914 clubs took part in the 2011 event and last weekend’s it was the turn of Bognor Regis Cricket Club, Sussex to enjoy a sporting makeover.

Jacksons fencing played a pivotal role in the success of the day by providing a run of picket fencing and matching gates, as well an army of Jacksons fencing volunteers to ensure a professional installation of the smart new boundary line.

In addition to the supply of fencing for Bognor Regis Cricket Club, Jacksons also donated 125 m of Ball-Stop fencing

to Bishop’s Waltham Cricket Club in Hampshire. The company also runs an exclusive friends and family Scheme for English Cricket Board which enables members of the scheme to enjoy up to 25% discount on over 1200 fencing products displayed on the Jacksons fencing web site, regardless of the order value.

for every purchase made through the NatWest Cricketforce friends and family Scheme, Jacksons donates 0.5% of the total sale into the Cricket fund, which goes towards funding for key projects.

Commenting on the success of the Bognor Regis event, Business Development Manager Marcia francis says, “it is always a privilege to be part of these showcase events and to witness in such a short space of time, the amazing transformation of a cricket ground. It is important that these ‘make-over‘ projects provide lasting, quality solutions and as such represent a genuine legacy to the local community. for these reasons it is entirely befitting for Jacksons fencing to be associated with the NatWest Cricketforce initiative.”

PostSpanner started their advertising campaign with a bang by sponsoring Grafton Game fair in Wiltshire and raising money for Help for Heroes. They further supported the fair by entering a team in the shooting competition. Sadly, the PostSpanner team failed to impress, unlike the PostSpanner. However, a substantial sum was raised for the charity and an excellent day was had by all.

More about the PostSpanner….

It’s likely that you are already familiar with the problem of trying to keep posts straight whilst driving them into the ground with a manual post basher or a tractor driven post driver.

The PostSpanner keeps posts straight and prevents them from twisting, whilst they are being sunk. This has proven to reduce overall fencing time by up to 75% in addition to reducing risk of injury to the person holding the post in place giving them some distance from the post basher.

After months of design work, PostSpanner has come up with a high quality well finished product, manufactured in the UK. The first consignment has been completed and is currently available on Amazon.com and at a small number of retailers. The prototypes already out in the field have been receiving excellent reviews.

There are two sizes available a fixed head Semi-pro PostSpanner aimed at the smallholder and equestrian user, and a detachable head Pro PostSpanner intended for the commercial user. This incorporates a removable head thus allowing larger heads, tamping and chiselling tools to be attached, reducing the number of tools required for the job.

TIMBER TREATMENT

Two Sheffield companies stepped in with some useful products for free when Bridget, daughter of the boxing legend, Brendan Ingle, wanted to hide unsightly walls in the new Wincobank community orchard, often referred to as Brendan’s Glove Garden as it is resplendent with two huge boxing glove sculpture seats,

Gripple, producers of wire joining and tensioners, and wire fencing manufacturers, along with ArcelorMittal Sheffield supplied and fitted Gripples to secure wires and posts to create a sturdy trellis.

On the trellis, fruit bushes will grow to disguise the walls in the orchard, which has been developed on derelict housing land and also includes daffodil bulbs, bushes and trees, which were funded by local residents and community groups and planted by more than 120 volunteers.

The orchard forms part of the Journeys to Hidden Places public art scheme and the sculptures, created by Saffon Waghorn, mark Brendan’s contribution to the area.

Bridget Ingle commented: “I am extremely grateful to both Gripple and ArcelorMittal Sheffield for their fruitful products and effort, as well as so many volunteers, organisations and businesses, in helping us create this special and valuable facility which will benefit so many people in the area.”

Arch Timber Protection will, from 6th June 2011, be making ‘Tanalised Clear’ a brand new, clear preservative treated timber, available from the company’s treatment centre at Preston .

Tanalised Clear timber is treated with Tanalith M, Arch’s new metal-free preservative, which retains the natural, untreated appearance of the timber rather than giving the pale green colouration of Tanalised E treated timbers. Based on an advanced and innovative formulation, Tanalised Clear treatment provides excellent protection against staining and keeps the timber looking bright and clean.

Arch has undertaken extensive field tests together with independent trials to prove the efficacy of Tanalised Clear against prescribed fungi and insects as required by British/European standards for wood preservatives, and Ecobuild of Sweden is running a series of on-going trials on Tanalised Clear samples.

Dr Tony Kelly, Arch Timber Protection’s Sales Director said: “Our expectations for the performance of Tanalised Clear timber have been borne out through rigorous testing. In field trials it was remarkable to observe that all of the Tanalith M treated test rigs retained their original appearance, and had not

COMPANY PROFILE

With the construction sector moving at last and work ramping up after a couple of tough years, it’s good to hear that so many companies are back in action and working to capacity . For Neil MacDonald, having weathered the storm and come out the other side, he’s managed a shrewd bit of business with his recent acquisition of Guildford-based ROR Fencing and now he’s pleased to say that business couldn’t be better .

Having started out as a Grand Prix mechanic in his late teens, Neil found himself ‘living the dream’, only to realise that being constantly on the road as he travelled around Europe wouldn’t be sustainable for the future. Returning to his roots in Surrey, Neil started working for a timber cutter and learnt the trade whilst developing a love for the great outdoors. After three years, MacDonald fencing was established in 1988, and has been buoyant ever since, becoming a well-respected name in the region.

With half the company’s business catering for the domestic trade and half on the commercial side of things, Neil currently has a gang permanently on site, working on small developments of new builds. He tells me:

“Things have been very hard in our line of work. Three years ago I remember sitting back and thinking ‘we’ve cracked it’: I had ten guys working for me and plenty of new business coming in then in just six months we were down to four of us.

a team of reliable, experienced fencers who’ll do a quality job. So far this year, we have had more site holdings than the whole of last year so I’m positive about the future.”

And he has every reason to be. While Neil admits that the local competition is strong, and as I hear from most of the MDs I meet, ‘there’s always someone to undercut you’ - with over 15 years of experience behind him, he has plenty of repeat business and referrals to keep strong.

“We’re finding that the recession has caused a lot of disturbance in business, as people have lost jobs and moved

on but it’s good for us as many of our clients have taken their association with us and introduced new work to the company.”

In addition, Neil’s recent investment in two-year-old ROR fencing has been a clever move. Having brought the phone numbers and website for the company, MacDonald fencing has now expanded their services to the entirety of Surrey and some of Hampshire too. Since setting up the firm in 2009, the previous owner has given up competing for the lowest quote and is now far more content in the industry of computer programming.

Neil says: “It’s not an easy industry – to the trained eye, there are lots of dodgy fences being erected out there. I’ll often see new fencing and give it a bit of a shake only for it to wobble, then I’ll have a look at the posts and they’ll be barely in the ground – and you know that there are a lot of people out there getting stung for some serious money. Sadly, everyone is very cost-driven these days but it makes it harder for those doing quality work.”

But with the unrelenting support from neighbours Challenge fencing, the MacDonald name is frequently recommended. Having started at the same time, it’s no surprise that the two companies have such a good working relationship particularly with Neil being one of the firm’s largest customers.

“It works well”, he tells me, “We’ve got a nice site here with a workshop, store room and yard, and most of our stock comes straight from next door when we need it.”

Some prestigious work has certainly come Neil’s way, including fencing the likes of Peter Andre’s house (which bagged the firm their first appearance in ‘Now’ magazine) and an impressive contract working for Balfour Beatty, which kept four of Neil’s team fully-employed for eight months.

The next development for the business

will be some investment in new trucks, as Neil fancies replacing their current three vehicles with something shiny and a bit more upmarket (he’s bagged the first as a personal treat and who can blame him?).

And even though Neil’s savvy business sense and fencing skills have done him proud, the racing clearly remains in the MacDonald blood, as Neil’s two sons, Harvey, 21, and Dudley, 19, have been dirt bike racing since they were small, travelling all over the country to compete in the British Championships. Indeed, MacDonald fencing showed their support as the proud sponsor of the Yamaha team at the 2010 Championships.

Harvey’s interests clearly align with his Dad’s, as he’s already learning the ropes with the MacDonald fencing team and hopes to one day take over the running of the company. And the way things are looking, he’ll have quite an empire to take over, and quite a name to live up to.

COMPANY PROFILE

It’s not very often you come across a timber supplier who fully understands the processes involved in felling, selling and yes, supplying timber, but Fleet Timber Supplies Ltd is one of fair few companies that does .

fleet Timber Supplies Ltd is a company with the capabilities to supply contractors up and down the country, but this, Adrian tells us, didn’t happen over night; “I don’t think we have experienced overnight development but instead have grown fairly organically. At the minute we have a total of nine employers and because we carry two 7 ½ tonne lorries and a 3 ½ tonne truck, we can provide a professional delivery service to all our customers whether they’re only looking for a couple of metres of fencing or a huge, substantial order.”

When you first arrive onsite the well-stocked yard looks like any other timber stockist, but if you venture around the back of the depot a hugely impressive treatment tank awaits.

Adrian tells us more, “We have had a treatment plant for six years; because we stock and supply quite a lot of treated timber we used to rely on a lot of other people to treat our products and often found that they couldn’t turn it around quick enough. To avoid this problem we decided to do our own thing and so began treating our own timber here on site. With the facilities we have we are also able to service two other company’s timber too.”

Because Adrian and his team import their timber from Windymains Timber Ltd in Scotland and WestBank Timber in Suffolk, it is freshly sawn and isn’t heavily unseasoned.

When asked why he and his beloved business had never explored the contracting side of the industry Adrian answers comically, “Selling is a big enough head ache; to actually go out and erect a fence for someone would be an even bigger headache!” he laughs. “We have enough with what we do at

the minute. fencing is a relatively small part of the business and it can be very seasonal. To avoid experiencing lulls throughout the year we supply furniture customers, construction companies and engineering works.”

As you may have already gathered, Adrian Rix is a man whose love for the timber industry has kept him involved in it. He founded fleet Timber Supplies with a working partner in 1999 but has run the company single-handedly since his partner’s departure in 2001. for many years he ran both the office and the yard with very little help but has since employed a strong and knowledge team to help him build his empire.

for fleet Timber the last few years have been the most successful yet, despite the recession. He tells us, “I think we have been fairly lucky, I’ve noticed some of my fencing customers have suffered a bit but that’s because

of the building trade. On the other hand though, we’ve seen other customers getting busier, so one effectively cancels the other out.”

A relatively new venture that Adrian is keen to develop is the supplier-to-stockist relationship he has formed with West Bank Timber. Since 2005 Adrian and his team has bought directly from the Suffolk-based group and the orders just keep coming! WestBank Timber’s Richard Abbott tells us, “We have a really good relationship with fleet Timber, in recent years the company’s orders have increased and we hope to continue to build on that.”

TRAINING

England’s land-based and environmental businesses must cultivate world-class skills in order to thrive and fully support the nation’s supply of food, fuel and water, according to new research, published recently by Lantra Sector Skills Council .

Lantra’s Skills Assessment analysis identifies the new skills that will be required, and examines major shifts in employment. This report identifies

that English businesses must recruit almost 194,000 new entrants to land-based and environmental jobs at all levels over the next decade just to maintain current workforce levels. In addition to these new entrants, the estimated 158,660 English businesses and 905,500 people employees must develop their skills through continual professional development (CPD) in order to meet future challenges.

Madge Moore, Lantra’s England Director, said: “Within England, the Coalition Government is striving to recover the economy with sustainable growth, building the ‘Big Society’. Skills development through training and CPD will support this initiative.”

Madge continued, “Our research shows that there will be opportunities for individuals from all educational backgrounds and with different skills

levels. There will be a broad range of job opportunities over the next decade in the land-based and environmental industries. It is the perfect opportunity to get a new career doing something that you will enjoy and which will support the health and welfare of us all.”

Lantra Sector Skills Council is asking fencers to participate in an extensive review examining roles, skills and responsibilities of those working in the fencing industry . Those with a keen involvement in the industry are being asked to complete an online survey as part of the industry’s National Occupational Standards (NOS) review .

John Godden, Lantra’s fencing Manager said: “The standards are a great tool to help employers identify the skills their

employees need, highlight best practice, develop training plans and develop job descriptions. These standards also form the basis of future fencing qualifications, so by sharing your expertise today you will be improving the workforce of tomorrow.”

from 15th July to 12th August Lantra will run a UK-wide online consultation to find out more details about the activities carried out by workers in the industry.

NOS are an essential tool for any size business. They help to identify skills gaps and find the most relevant training and learning. This can help businesses with continuous professional development of both managers and of the workforce. Standards cannot be developed without your help. Only by working together can today’s fencing professionals make sure that the revised Standards will take into account any new business practices and make them fit for purpose and valued by all.

Today’s fencing market is a very turbulent one; as an increasing amount of smaller contracting firms make their debut within the industry, tendering for work and securing substantial contracts is now tougher than ever.

Being in the business for two decades does stand you in good stead though and Andy and Gail Cooper of A&K fencing are one of the lucky few company-founders who can say that even now after all these years they are securing substantial contracts across Cambridgeshire and East Anglia.

A&K fencing was formed in 1986 by Andy Cooper and his then business partner Keith (hence the name). for three years the pair explored the domestic market and was known locally for their smaller-scale fencing work, but when the two decided to part ways at the turn of the millennium Andy knew that he was destined for bigger and

better things. Andy’s wife Gail became involved in the company in 1991 and from then on A&K went from strength to strength.

He knew that if he was to take his beloved business to a more advanced trading level he would have to dive head first into the commercial and industrial markets and do so with vigour and enthusiasm.

Commenting on the last ten years Andy tells us, “We have developed massively; in fact in 2003 we became an official limited company. It’s nice to see that we have gone from working only in the domestic market to now securing much larger, costly contracts. But it has been tough, that goes without saying. Over the last few years the recession has hit us hard and there have been times when we’ve been looking for the light at the end of the tunnel. If I’m honest I still think this year will be a bit of

still secuRinG contRacts aFteR tWentY YeaRs!FencinG neWs talks With andY and Gail cooPeR oF a&k FencinG in PeteRBoRouGh

a struggle but next year we should definitely be seeing the end of it.”

Similarly to most industry traders, Andy and Gail Cooper are happy to admit that recent times have been difficult on them, but that’s not to say that they

haven’t done well, in fact they’ve done phenomenally!

A&K fencing is currently in the process of completing a contract for the national construction group Kier Eastern worth a massive £250,000. The contract saw

Andy and his team of seven contractors erect boundary fencing around several new police stations in Norfolk each of which would accommodate high-security prison cells within them.

Andy explains, “We began working on that contract since January last year and will be finishing it off very soon. It mainly comprised of security fencing work so our preferred supplier was IAE. Overall it has been a really good job and the work was carried out very smoothly.”

Since securing the impressive contract A&K fencing has carried out work in conjunction with the Hills Partnership, a major housing development group and has also worked in Leicester on behalf of SDC Construction.

“Tendering for work is incredibly competitive these days.” Andy admits, “It’s so tight that you can in fact lose out on a job by a pound a metre. It is now a case of putting your prices in and waiting to see if you’re successful whilst still being aware of the lowest

possible cost you can stoop to because it simply may not be worthwhile.”

He continues, “It’s clear to see why some people are falling by the wayside. It really is dog eat dog where tendering is concerned, especially now as a lot of new, larger firms are coming in with fresh ideas and what not.”

But A&K are in an advantageous position Andy insists. As even in spite of the recession, the company continues to receive recommendations from local authorities, construction companies and of course the smaller traders who buy directly from their yard in Yaxley, Monday to Saturday.

“We sell to small traders and the general public too. Unfortunately though there have been a lot of small traders throwing the towel in over the last eighteen months; because I came from that type of domestic background, I appreciate what those smaller traders have to go through.”

Continuing as they have done for the

past twenty years, Gail and Andy are looking forward to attaining even more large contracts and are hopeful that by maintaining their high standards the key relationship between themselves and developers will continue to grow.

Andy concludes, “We have been here six years now and we have promoted the ‘new’ branch as it were very heavily so that we now have sufficient work on. Although we work primarily around East Anglia we will go wherever the work dictates we should.”

With such a positive outlook on the past, the present and indeed the future, it’s clear why A&K fencing have been so successful, for so long.

LANDSCAPING

Brett Landscaping has partnered with award-winning garden and landscape designer Kari Beardsell to deliver an innovative feature garden for the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show which takes place 5-10th July 2011 .

Entirely constructed within a large 12m x 15m blacked out marquee, the garden entitled ‘Cube Lighting, A Garden by Night’ will take visitors on a journey to experience how a space can transform its personality completely after dark. Through the clever use of eco-friendly lighting a range of emotions will be inspired, from high drama to the soft and intimate.

Brett Landscaping is providing hard landscaping materials for the garden, including polished sandstone for the pool surround and pergoda. “Polished sandstone is ideal for evening gardens,” explains designer Kari Beardsell. “The light colour of the paving remains visible for a long time as the natural light fades. An added dimension is achieved

when elements in the sandstone are picked up by the lighting making the paving sparkle.”

Hampton Court Palace flower Show is one of the biggest flower shows in the world, attracting over 160,000 visitors.

Jane Campion of Brett Landscaping adds, “This garden will be an inspirational experience for visitors. The clever use of light and dark will demonstrate how outdoor spaces can be used as an extension of the home, even after the sun sets. We are looking forward to seeing our popular polished sandstone paving used within this truly unique and exciting garden.”

After more than 18 months researching, developing and indeed testing their new ‘Trumold’ design Stockport Fencing Ltd now have the capabilities to produce the finest pre-case concrete posts time and time again .

By using traditional wet cast manufacturing techniques, the new rigid PVC mould is being heralded as a manufacturing breakthrough in the pre-cast concrete post marketplace.

During the development, Stockport fencing looked to enhance the benefits of using traditional PVC liner by producing a product that unlike traditional liners wasn’t subject to distortion and produced a superior surface finish cast after cast.

Managing Director John Johnson tells us, “Trumold gives an unequalled finish to the cast slotted post with flat faces to both flanks and the face of the post. It also provides a perfectly true

shape along its length for easy levelling during installation”.

Using a rigid PVC construction to both flanks and base with a patented flexible hinge design, John believes they have been able to overcome problems associated with traditional PVC concrete post liners.

“The main benefit is that is gives a vastly superior finish to anything that has been on the market,” said John. “It’s revolutionary because the liner is rigid and the only thing that moves is the hinge. Because of this hinged construction posts are de-moulded quicker, the liner retains its shape cast after cast and is easier to clean.”

In 2006 Stockport fencing Ltd launched the new Litecrete® post and panel system, which was marketed as weighing up to 60% lighter than traditional dense concrete, thus reducing the impact of the 25kg manual handling

develoPinG PRoducts that BReak the mould

guidelines for single handed lifting set out by the HSE.

Stockport fencing Ltd also launched a patented lightweight gardening edging roll in Litecrete® that is guaranteed against rot for twenty years. “There has been a lot of debate recently in the industry about the effectiveness of long life timber treatments” said John Johnson, “especially when the ground contact is evident. Our Litecrete® product is not susceptible to rot at ground level.”

John has also recognised a niche in the market for re-constructing Westmorland

fell rockery stones using Litecrete®, “This range will be manufactured in fifteen recognisable shapes and sizes and when used to create a rockery feature will be undistinguishable from the real thing” said John who is currently in the process of applying for a patent for this idea also.

CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW

Despite the challenging warm and dry weather conditions throughout April and May, exhibitors at The RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2011 excelled in both planting and design, with the world class growers and exhibitors in the Great Pavilion amassing over fifty gold medals in total .

The Daily Telegraph Garden, designed by Cleve West, was awarded gold and has been given the accolade of Best Show Garden. This is a stunning hat trick of Best in Show awards for The Daily Telegraph.

Among the gold winning highlights, Diarmuid Gavin achieved his first gold medal at the RHS Chelsea flower Show for his Irish Sky Garden. In the Urban Garden category, eight gardens were awarded medals, three gold, four silver-gilt and two silver medals. The Best Urban Garden 2011 title went to Stockton Drilling Ltd, with Lands’

End and Worcester Bosch gardens also winning gold.

The Best Artisan Garden accolade and a gold medal were awarded to the Hae-woo-so (Emptying One’s Mind) garden. In the Great Pavilion, right at the heart of the RHS Chelsea flower Show where world class nurseries exhibit a vast range of top quality plants, there were over 100 medals awarded, of which 56 were gold. The President’s Award in the Great Pavilion was awarded to Crug farm Plants, Gwynedd

Jo Thompson Wins Certificate of Merit

The garden designed by Jo Thompson for one of the UK’s leading sculptor’s, Helen Sinclair was awarded a ‘Certificate of Merit’ at this year’s show.

Jo has created a meandering set of paths through dense planting against a background of reclaimed timber. She

chose soft planting in tones of pinks, blues, and bronze with a view making it look as if the delicate sculptures emerge out of the planting. Helen Sinclair’s work is figuratively based, modelled in a variety of materials, and cast into stone-resin and bronze. She exhibits all over Britain and her sculptures are in private collections worldwide.

Kubota help show visitors to reduce mowing time

‘Spend less time mowing the lawn and more time enjoying your beautiful garden,’ that was the message from Kubota Tractor and Groundcare at this years show.

Kubota showcased three of its most popular ride-on mowers and a sub-compact tractor, all of which have been designed to help gardeners give their lawn a gold-medal winning finish in a fraction of the time.

“Chelsea flower Show is literally a platform where gardening enthusiasts and professionals come together to preview the very pinnacle of garden design for 2011. Naturally, visitors are inspired by the show gardens and then look to the exhibitors to find out how they can recreate what they’ve seen back at home,” commented Dave Blackwood, Kubota Tractor and Groundcare Sales and Marketing Manager.

Award-winning sculptor David Harber wins again!

Sculptor and dialist David Harber has been awarded the RHS Sundries Trophy for the fourth time at Chelsea this year. The honour follows his hat trick in 2009 when he was presented with the award three times in a row, and comes in the same year that one of his new designs, The Mantle, was nominated for the Product of the Year Award.

Melcourt usage keeps growing!

The specification and use of Melcourt products by both the Royal Horticultural Society and other important participants is growing. for many years the Society itself has chosen Melcourt to supply Walk Chips for use around the site as pedestrian walk ways. In previous years during wet weather, the walk chips have proved a dry and comfortable pedestrian walk surfaces.

“All our products are produced from sustainable sources,” says Andy Chalmers, Melcourt Sales & Marketing Director. “At a time when designers and specifiers are placing so much emphasis on sustainable landscapes and gardens it is gratifying to see such prestigious organisations setting an excellent example.”

50 years’ experience in the Timber Treatment Plant market sector enables CBR Engineering to build on its Customer focused service to reach pole position in securing Quality accreditations . As quality, environment, safety, training and service are all key words in CBR Engineering’s Philosophy; they are able to fulfil the needs of their customers to a high level; with regards to Treatment Plant design, manufacture and installation .

CBR Engineering; based in Castleford, West Yorkshire, now holds all the relevant accreditations specifically geared towards the design of timber treatment plants, in UKAS Accredited Quality Standard ISO9001:2008, Environmental Standard ISO14001:2004 and Health and Safety Standard OHSAS18001:2007. In fact, CBR prides itself on being the only UK Company in this market sector to hold all three accreditations.

UK Commercial Manager, Bob Smith said, “CBR directors have shown huge vision in taking the company to the next level and provide all the tools needed to further increase the company’s profile.”

These are accreditations that the Workforce has been collectively working

towards for the past two years. As a whole these accreditations form a part of a coherent management system which holds worldwide recognition.

“We are very proud to have obtained all three accreditations which verifies our commitment to the provision of high quality, customer driven services, delivered within a framework of quality management practices,” said Technical Director, Ian Allatt.

CBR employs 25 people at its 1.2 acre Castleford site and is dedicated to staff development which is endorsed by its apprenticeship scheme. An active member of the Modern Apprenticeship Scheme it works closely with local schools and colleges, taking on up to two apprentices each year. Many apprentices have stayed with the company honing their skills working alongside fully skilled tradesmen enabling the company to retain high skill levels within the business.

Paul Thackrey, Works and Site Engineer affirmed, “CBR’s apprenticeship scheme provides young people with the skills needed for a lifelong career. We have established remarkable links with the community which is truly reflected in our workforce.”

The company has the facilities to manufacture new Timber Treatment Plants, as well as meeting the extensive needs of the UK market for Refurbished Plants. All work is carried out in-house; with CBR making a conscious decision not to outsource work, preferring instead to use its own qualified, skilled tradesmen. All work is carried out to the highest of standards to comply with all current UK legislation and provides on-site plant improvements to optimise treatment processes.

It compliments its skilled workforce with the control system and software engineering skills of Treatment Services Limited (TSL) who provide PLC and PC based Treatment Plant Control. The use of the ‘Spinnaker’ control system developed by TSL has proved highly successful. With an ongoing development program it is arguably the best control system currently on the market; adding bespoke modules to the overall package, as and when required.

The clear advantage of using a PC system is that it allows the operator to view plant

status and fluid location in real time. By observing the on screen graphic along with the real time pressure graph, an operator is able spot potential mechanical issues on the plant and schedule in maintenance before any problems occur. from there the customer is at liberty to take advantage of the Service and Support scheme that CBR can offer them; providing a complete engineering solution for the industry.

COMPANY PROFILE

Having started out his career as a gamekeeper and gone on to gain qualifications in arboriculture, Jon Lee is skilled at pretty much anything he turns his hand to: fencing, carpentry, tree work, garden design – you name it, his company Arbworx can do it .

Jon worked in the tree care industry for four years when in 2000 he took the plunge and set up his own tree surgery firm, working out of the back of a Sierra as a one man band.

Now, the company’s most popular work is designing, landscaping and fencing playgrounds for schools and early learning centres, as well as a number of projects for councils. Jon prides his team on always bringing a sparkle to the finished job, as he tells me:

“I love the element of creativity that comes with our work, from implementing a 30ft wooden dragon into our designs to painting pencils on an imposing steel palisade fence surrounding a school. We work hard to always go that extra mile, never leaving a job unfinished and always staying true to our word.”

Indeed, you only have to take a look at Arbworx’ online presence to see just how dedicated and hard working the team is. Jon says: “I have 100% confidence in my staff – and I had to go through a lot to find a select few I can rely upon. I think that attitudes need to be addressed in the fencing industry, as there seem to be a lot of cowboys out there. At Arbworx, we like to think we raise the bar in terms of professionalism.

“There needs to be an equivalent of the NPTC in tree work for the fencing industry that ensures quality and maintains a standard. People are making big investments, the equivalent of a new car in some cases, and they need to know they are getting quality workmanship and materials.”

It’s these high standards which have got the company to where it is today – busy and growing - whilst other names around him are vanishing off the scene. Working all over the South East and in London, the team have a diverse portfolio to their name, from schools and small domestic jobs to roof terraces and million pound properties on the coast. And Jon owes a good deal of that to his wife...

The crunch came for Arbworx when it was decided that with the recession biting and local companies struggling, the

time was right to invest. With Jon’s wife Sophia just completing her Professional Certificate from the Chartered Institute of Marketing, she knew that in order to upgrade and strengthen their brand, some changes were in order.

This included spending almost £6000 on a rebrand, including new uniforms, a website, sign-written vans and promotional materials. Jon says, “I was dubious at first, but as it turns out, the rebrand paid for itself in the first two new jobs we won off the back of the new marketing approach. We upgraded our look and suddenly the work started coming in that was worth a lot more, with extensive projects on million-plus houses.”

Arbworx have thought of everything: with a dedicated facebook page, Twitter account and fully-updated website meaning the team are active both off and online. Arbworx’ employees have been given iPhones and update their feed thrice daily, and facebook has proved a fantastic tool, with nearly 100 members and each photo being viewed by around 300 viewers.

Having had Carpel Tunnel Syndrome in both hands and a hernia to recover from, Jon applied himself to the online marketing side of things and is now proficient in search engine optimisation and a number of other techniques to ensure that Arbworx maintains its high ranking under a number of general search terms.

So things are looking peachy, with business doing well and Jon and Sophia recently welcoming new daughter, Poppy, into the world. But what lies ahead?

“We’re looking to move into the commercial side of things as VAT is killing domestic work. We’re expanding as others around us have failed and we put that down to our ability to adapt – we don’t say no to anything as we often find that a small job will lead on to a recommendation worth thousands, and we’re always assessing our approach.

“My aim is to eventually have a team of about 25 staff and be regional, although my only worry is how to keep a handle on quality. We want to grow, but with the best possible team and a consistently highly level of work behind us. It’s word of mouth which enables us to expand, so that’s important.

Clearly, Jon loves his job and is immensely proud of his achievements to date. With

The trucks are already being put though their paces on the roads of Britain after going into service last week .

The addition of the new trucks to Calders fleet demonstrates the company’s continued commitment to its development. Operations Manager John Secker had the following to say: “This is a fantastic investment for Calders & Grandidge, it enables us to continue to develop our consistent and dependable delivery service.”

The new vehicles have a combined increased loading capability of 42,000kg over the older trucks, and an output of 12,400cc, 6,030cc more than previous. All this means that the new vehicles will provide a stronger performance through increased efficiency and improved reliability, as well as a reduction in maintenance time.

Calders pride themselves on operating with the environment in mind, both on site and off, and the selection of the MAN trucks, with their Euro 5 engines, demonstrates this environmentally conscious state of mind. MAN themselves

have been pioneers in both Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technologies, and the engines fitted in the new Calders trucks will reduce Particulate Matter (PM) limits by 33%. Calders & Grandidge are thrilled with the green credentials of the vehicles, and even more so to be taking their own environmentally friendly ethos on the road.

Calders & Grandidge has been operating on its current site in Boston, Lincolnshire for well over 100 years now, and has established an incredible relationship with the town and its people. The brand new trucks brandishing the town’s name not only show investment for the local company, but also in the town of Boston itself. It’s a great advertisement for the town and company alike, and shows that both are striding forward together and moving with the times for the benefit of its people.

The increased fleet now equips Calders & Grandidge with the means to be a better, more proficient supplier for its clients. The increased delivery capability means that more products can be delivered faster and more efficiently than ever before, and all in a more environmentally friendly manner.

CRASH PROTECTION PRODUCTSThe SmartFence, the alternative for nets, was warmly welcomed by sheep farmers last year and Gallagher is placing an improved version on the market, now stronger and safer .

Gallagher has continued to develop this all-in-one system, which makes it possible to set up a complete temporary fencing system in just five minutes. The synthetic thread in the Smartfence is now woven instead of twined, for example. That creates a stronger but also more effective fence and improved flow guidance.

One of the benefits of the Smartfence is the tightening of the threads. The reinforced poles make it possible for the system to absorb tension even better. This guarantees a good, tight fence every time.

Also, the fastening of the Smartfence in the ground is important to the stability

Tanalised E pressure treated timber from Duchy Timber will be extensively used in a forthcoming sustainable housing project in Cornwall . The locally sourced high performance construction material will be used in houses in the St Austell and Clay Country Eco-Communities project, one of the UK’s first four eco-towns .

Wood is a sustainable and adaptable building material, and once pressure treated with a modern wood preservative it has a long term protection against fungal and insect attack. Tanalised E pressure treated timber can have a service life of 15 – 60 years depending on its end use, whilst its natural green colouration will blend in well into rural environments.

The project, to be built on a former brownfield site in St Austell, Cornwall, will use locally-sourced wood for joists, partitions, internal woodwork, roof shingles and other internal and external components. Construction of the first 90 houses is expected to begin in September 2011, with around an additional 300 houses built over the next 20 years. Duchy Timber has its own on-site timber treatment facility which uses Arch Timber Protection’s Tanalith E wood preservative to ensure an

effective built-in protection. This environmentally advanced water based product is based on unique copper triazole technology, which uses copper from recycled sources and organic biodegradable biocides.

“The eco-town’s houses could be up to 80% timber, keeping the project as sustainable as possible,” says Nick Massey, Senior Key Account Manger, Duchy Timber. “This fits in perfectly with all our ‘green’ values and it’s great to be involved in something right on our doorstep. This local supply reduces the need for additional transportation of the timber and further adds to the sustainability of the project. We have a real confidence in the products and processes we use to treat all our timbers and I am sure the benefits of Tanalised E timber will be fully realised by the developers and eventual end users of this development.”

The eco-town will be built on reclaimed former industrial land by Eco-Bos, a joint venture between Swiss town building and management company Orascom and Imerys, a french mineral mining and processing company.

FORESTRY

ConFor’s Chief Executive, Stuart Goodall, is encouraging everyone in forestry and wood processing to contribute their views to the expert panel established by Secretary of State Caroline Spelman to advise on the future of forestry policy in England .

“The panel’s recommendations will be significant for the future of forestry in England and it is vital that everyone has their say. This can be done by sending your views, no matter how brief, to the panel”, explained Stuart.

Each member of the panel is there to contribute his/her own expertise and as chief executive of Confor Stuart has wide experience of the sector. However, input from individuals and businesses in the sector will be important to identify key issues and actions.

The panel, chaired by the Right Reverend James Jones, Bishop of Liverpool, brings together a wide range of interests and expertise covering the environmental, social and economic aspects of forestry. Given a very wide remit, they will advise government on a new approach to forestry policy in England, including looking at how woodland cover can be increased and at options for enhancing

public benefits from all woodlands and forests.

Private sector interests are well represented on the panel, but it is vital that the industry’s views are expressed direct from the forest floor. following the premature closure of the government consultation in february 2011, a substantial number of interested parties have contributed their opinions. Individuals in the forestry sector, however, do not always contribute as much as they should given their particular expertise and knowledge.

Everyone with an interest in the forest industry in England is urged to contribute, with further information on how to do this available from the panel web site.

The panel is making a number of visits to a variety of forests and businesses around England in order to inform themselves and it will provide an interim report to Caroline Spelman in the autumn, with recommendations in the spring of 2012.

Tanalith E wood preservative is protecting the new wooden poles holding up Macedonia’s Museum on Water, a reconstruction of a prehistoric palafitte settlement built over Lake Ohrid . Palafittes, also known as stilt houses or pile dwellings, are houses built on timber piles over water or above the ground .

The Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Macedonia contracted Bulgarian company Uvix Impregnation to treat the timber, and over five months the company used Tanalith E to protect around 660 cubic metres of oak poles. These were then driven into the lake bottom to carry the timber platforms and buildings.

“The excellent performance credentials of Tanalith E in severe conditions such as permanent water contact made it the perfect choice for this project,” says Jury Bistrishky, of Uvix Impregnantion Ltd. “Tanalith E was recommended by the faculty of forestry at the University St. Kiril i Metidij, Skopje, because it is an environmentally-friendly alternative

to traditional wood preservative treatments, and will not affect the fauna in the lake.”

The Museum on Water is part of the National Institution Institute for Protection of Monuments of Culture is situated in the Bay of the Bones,

on the southeast coast of Lake Ohrid. The reconstruction of the settlement is part of a new museum complex including a museum building, diving centre and the Gradishte, a Roman military garrison town. The reconstructed buildings used a combination of timber, clay, animal skins and reeds, offering

visitors a realistic look at how prehistoric families once lived in Macedonia over 5,500 years ago.

COMPANY NEWS

As the UK fencing market remains tentative, North East based Manufacturer Peart Fencing continues to look and indeed advance forward .

‘Market conditions aren’t great and consequently there are some suicidal margins out there’ Marcus Mitchinson Sales & Marketing Manager tells us. ‘However we are focused on the future of Peart fencing and on what we can do, rather than what we can’t’ he adds ‘when companies enter difficult times such as we’re experiencing, it’s all too easy to focus too heavily on consolidation, battening down the hatches and doing little else’

Peart fencing believes it’s possible to still go economy without shutting up shop; in fact the Peart fencing team seem surprisingly pro-active for what appears to be a fairly slow-moving market.

‘Product development can create opportunities and every business needs opportunities, which means we’re regularly looking at new products as well as enhancements to our existing

Focused on FencinGrange’ said Marcus, who goes onto reveal ‘we have a new system on the drawing board right now, which we hope to have ready for market later in the year, but its not just about new products, we’re investing our time reminding customers that we don’t just manufacture Palisade, but Railings, Mesh systems and Pedestrian Barriers too’

As well as growing their product portfolio, Peart fencing has also recently been growing their sales team in a bid to support their sales and marketing initiatives.

furthermore, the much talked about Peart fencing website which back in 2007 pioneered some clever web-based

functions is back under construction and promises to be fresh, intuitive and informative.

‘four years ago we were the first to offer a Q40 specification upload feature, which allowed contractors and specifiers to quickly and easily send their enquiries direct from their tender documents to our website’ Marcus continued ‘we’re constantly looking for ways to develop the interface between contractor and manufacturer, as we strive to ensure the Peart fencing customer experience is both pleasurable and memorable’

Considering the current economic uncertainty and resultant squeeze on margins, it’s refreshing to hear a resilient attitude and to observe

those who have the determination to develop their business regardless of market forces.

‘Granted it’s been another challenging year for us, yet we remain optimistic for the forthcoming year and are focused on maintaining our position as The Contractor’s Choice’ Marcus concluded

It has to be said that the enthusiasm at the Peart camp remains evermore present and this momentum will surely help perpetuate them into 2012 and beyond.

We are pleased to be associated with

Orchard Fencing and wish them continued success for the future

Having worked alongside his father for several years, Neil and wife Karen decided to go it alone, establishing Orchard Fencing at their site in Welling back in 1989 . Serving mainly retail and small trade customers, it soon became clear to the pair that there was real potential for expansion, so when a two-acre site came up for sale in Erith, they were quick to snap it up, with Neil’s father relocating his concrete manufacturing plant next door .

And the progression hasn’t stopped there, with Orchard fencing putting its name to another branch in Catford last year, in order to spread the company’s offering to customers in South London.

“The best move we made was buying this site,” says Neil, referring to the depot in Erith; “We can hold a large amount of stock and have plenty of room to store everything we manufacture, from gates to bespoke trellis, as well as products we buy in such as security fencing. from this site, we can service our other two branches and we’ve got plenty of room to accommodate everything – which, as a wholesaler, is really important.”

Twenty-three years on from when Neil and Karen first started out, they now have 15 full-time staff, as well as a few part-timers, most of whom are fireman. With a great atmosphere in the office, and the couple remaining front of house and fully involved in the running of the business, it’s clear that both staff and customers love popping in and being greeted by a friendly face.

“We aren’t suit people”, Neil tells me,

thRee BRanches FullvictoRia Poolman tRavels to eRith to meet neil and kaRen huBBle oF oRchaRd FencinG

“and we think that’s helped us develop the business and spread our reputation through word of mouth – people like a personal service, and they like to deal with someone who knows them on a first-name basis.”

Indeed, Neil puts every effort into forming a community amongst his clientele, as he often dishes out the work to those who he knows need it most - and judging by the shop when I go to visit, there’s plenty going on and lots to keep everyone busy, although Neil

is quick to point out the erratic nature of business at the moment:

“We’ve found things very unpredictable of late – we’ll have a spell when we’re absolutely flat out, and then it will go quiet again before picking up. It can make it very difficult to work out how much stock we need to carry as we don’t like it sitting around, but then we also don’t want to turn anyone away. I tend to err on the side of caution, but I find it very difficult to judge at the moment and there’s no pattern to

our levels of trade.”

Continuing to advertise locally and with a well-established presence in the area, it’s clear that Orchard are in a great position and highly-regarded amongst both contractors and residential folk around London and Kent. Offering every product to anyone, Neil warns me of being the clichéd ‘one stop shop’, but if there’s evidence that the company really does stock a complete range, it’s stacked all around in huge piles and towering racks, whilst more is being manufactured

in two workshops on site.

It’s clear that Neil and Karen are moving with the times, now operating a fully-automated system and taking advantage of the market by expanding in the midst of a recession; the pair set themselves annual challenges to continually improve and develop the site. With the couple’s two sons, Harry and George, helping out at weekends, Neil is clearly proud that they are doing just as he did at his own father’s firm.

But of course, Neil is the first to admit that running the business has its difficulties, as he is currently in the process of having three of his vehicles converted and buying a new

one, to comply with the new emissions guidelines.

“I’m not sure the government is helping to support small to medium enterprises presently, as we seem to have so much to deal with on vehicle maintenance alone – from the rising diesel charges and 8-week regulations, as well as checks and tachos, and congestion charges to factor in as well. I think there is a bit of a regionalist attitude, with all the new rules affecting those working within the M25 catchment area.”

Working hard to comply with all the legislation, attending specialist ‘lifting’ courses and keeping up with the changes is a full-time job for anyone who owns a

company of this scale, and like Neil, I’m sure many readers will agree that things could be easier if only a little common sense was added to the mix. That said, Orchard fencing aren’t being hindered by paperwork and rulebooks, as the company is clearly striving forward as we exit the recession cloud, with plenty of new ideas up their sleeve for how to continually improve the business.

It’s a pleasure to visit sites like Orchard’s, to feel a lively buzz around the place and see that no matter how busy some

MDs are, they’ll always make an effort to have a chat, whilst ensuring that everything is running as it should. We look forward to hearing what’s in store in the future for Neil and Karen, as something tells me that there’s still as much potential for expansion as when they started.

With the onset of the summer months D&D Technologies is gearing up for another busy season and continue to encourage gate safety by promoting its MagnaLatch® magnetic gate safety latches and TruClose® gate safety hinges . Both are patented and revolutionary in their operation .

The MagnaLatch is magnetically triggered and so incurs no mechanical interference during closure. This magnetic operation has proved beneficial for the safety and reliability of residential and commercial gates, but most notably on child safety gates.

The MagnaLatch also features adjustment slots that provide a high degree of vertical and horizontal adjustment of the latch components so that alignment can be corrected long after installation.

The first simple MagnaLatch ‘Side Pull’ model was devised almost 20 years ago. It has since been transformed into the now legendary ‘Top Pull’ model, the magnetic gate latch that adorns millions of gates around swimming

pools, childcare centres, playgrounds and nurseries the world over.

The third model of the MagnaLatch is a shorter version of the Top Pull known as the ‘Vertical Pull’, and like the Top Pull, it is key lockable for added peace-of-mind.

However, no latch is sufficiently effective without an accompanying pair of durable and reliable gate hinges. Enter D&D Technologies’ TruClose® range of tension-adjustable gate hinges. With the TruClose hinges D&D Technologies again broke free of traditional gate hardware when it designed hinges that were not only injection moulded, but also guaranteed to never rust, bind, chip, peel, deform, sag or stain!

TruClose Hinges come in Regular and Heavy Duty ranges and a variety of different models. Different widths and styles of leaves provide hinges that are ideal not only for lightweight, heavy or high-traffic gates, but also gates made of various materials, including metal, wood and even PVC/vinyl.

The technology behind the TruClose gate hinges revolves around polymers that are considered “self lubricating”, meaning not only do they not require oil or grease for smooth function, but also they require negligible maintenance.

Best of all, TruClose hinges carry a unique internal tension-adjustment facility that allows the owner to adjust or re-adjust

tension at the turn of a screwdriver. It’s a quick, 1-2-3 process that allows gate closing speed to be finely adjusted to suit most types of household gates.

COMPANY NEWS

Following one of the busiest Easter periods on record, leading timber products specialist M&M Timber is now working around the clock to meet urgent re-stocking orders from its nationwide garden centre customer base .

Anticipating a continued steady increase in the popular ‘grow your own’ industry, the Worcestershire-based company had wisely stepped up its production output of market gardening products to meet supply demands in time for the springtime rush on sales.

According to reliable industry reports, sales at some garden centre outlets shot up by as much as 80 per cent on 2010 over April’s Easter bank holiday weekend.

“We have seen a considerable market swing towards ‘good life’ gardening over the last few years so the early spring sales rush was no surprise,” says M&M Timber’s Managing Director Nigel Poyner. “All our orders were fulfilled in good time and our workshops are now busy meeting new demands for what promises to be an equally good summer bonanza.”

Up 60% on the previous year, sales of M&M Timber’s market leading ‘Veggiebed’ ranges exceeded well over 35,000 units in the last twelve months, and the quality built chicken arks have become the biggest sellers in the company’s pet and poultry housing range. The superior quality

Bayton greenhouse range, launched just over a year ago, is also gaining popularity with a new breed of aspiring gardeners.

Latest in the company’s horticultural range are free standing Grow Troughs. Available in two sizes, they are designed to sit comfortably on a garden patio and are equally suitable for growing either vegetables for the kitchen or an attractive flower display. The troughs feature top quality pressure treated timber and rugged construction for a guaranteed service life of 15 years.

The M&M Timber range of garden and landscape products is noted for its quality standards and longevity, which has contributed to the firm’s runaway success in this competitive market sector. All products undergo a revolutionary micronized preservation process, featuring advanced corrosion protection technology developed by leading wood preservatives specialist Osmose.

Despite rumours of imminent material price increases throughout the industry, M&M Timber will continue to maintain its guaranteed price freeze until the end of August in order to bring some stability to retail pricing, sales codes and point-of-sale.

For thirty years Trifen Engineering based in Rugeley, Staffordshire, has been supplying contractors and local authorities nationwide with the finest steel fencing products and continues to be one of the market leaders to this very day .

founded in 1981 by the now-retired Keith Barrat, the company is now run by long-standing employee Steve Wood, who from first starting out on the shop floor, has worked his way up the managerial ladder to Estimator, Sales Manager and final to the position he now holds, General Manager.

Steve in his own words has “played a part in getting the company where it his today” and has also ensured that the company remains a success throughout recessions, credit crunches and economical downturns.

To achieve this Steve and his team at Trifen have gone above and beyond to seek out new working relationships with fellow market leaders, so that effectively two company’s brains are better than one.

In 2010 when Paramount launched the innovative Paramesh Range, Trifen was chosen as one if the key stockists in the country and have since seen the demand for the new system go through the roof.

Narrow kerf sawing pioneer, Wood-Mizer recently demonstrated its range of band sawmills for small/medium businesses, as well as an improved small log processing set-up and notably, a new industrial sawmill cutting 1 .5 metres diameter logs at the international trade show Ligna .

‘Orange’ business ideas… .

Keen to support small businesses adapting to economic difficulties, Wood-Mizer presented its smallest mills for farmers and estate owners. A small mill with ‘Setworks’ and power feed will also show its paces; and of interest to those supplying the building sectors, a moulder/planer will be affixed to small mills to add profile and moulding capabilities. A simple, manually fed moulder attachment and an advanced moulder with ‘Setworks’ and electric up/down head movement, will operate on the stand.

Additionally, a small/medium mill on a segmented bed will show increased productivity at affordable prices. A small

horizontal re-saw will be shown assisting short logs conversion, which will be of particular interest to pallet wood producers.

Productivity boost

Wood-Mizer’s mid-range, ‘workhorse’ mill now includes an optional edger and improved productivity by one third. The edger has two blades, one in a fixed position, the other moveable and lasers show planned cuts. feed speed is smoothly controllable.

Mobility enhancements

Most ‘orange’ Wood-Mizer mills are available in mobile versions; Towed to customers’ logs, they slash cartage costs, which is a widely appreciated advantage of mobile sawmilling. At Ligna, a mobile semi-industrial orange sawmill with 42hp diesel engine was also showcased.

Modern pallet wood production improved

An enhanced, sustainable small log processing set-up converted generally non-commercial wood into pallets at Ligna. Its twin vertical saw (TVS) is equipped now with a ‘spiky’ chain, improving material feed. It handles hard, twisted and short logs, increasing efficiency by uploading butt-to-butt. A single vertical saw and a twin-head, horizontal re-saw follow the TVS.

Big boards from new, high-powered band sawmill

Thin kerf sawing technology now is extended to processing difficult, bulky logs with the launch at Ligna of a band sawmill that halves a 1.5m diameter log. This new mill takes Wood-Mizer into new markets and is expected to be of particular interest to tropical wood sawmillers in Asia and Africa, as well as those cutting large temperate and softwood logs in other parts of the world.

Expert in narrow blades

The new sawmill uses band blades of between 50mm and 90mm widths and over nine-metre lengths. Wood-Mizer will exhibit its own manufactured blades range including DoubleHard and SilverTip ranges, new width and thickness specifications, and the recently developed RazorTip Stellite-tipped blades.

Architects, designers and engineers are to be challenged to rethink one of the most crucial but controversial features of modern Britain: the electricity pylon.

The new competition is run by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) for the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and National Grid, and call for designs for a new generation of pylon.

The challenge is to design a pylon that has the potential to deliver for future generations, whilst balancing the needs of local communities and preserving the beauty of the countryside.

The designs will be open for the public to view and comment on via the competition website and also at an exhibition to be held at the V&A as part of London Design festival (17-25 September). The judging panel will meet in October to choose an overall winner.

A prize fund of £10,000 will be shared amongst the winning candidates and National Grid will give consideration to developing the winning design for use in future projects.

The Advanced Turf Technology (ATT) TM SMARTCut™ is the flexible answer for all Greenkeepers who require a replacement; second or back up set of Cutting Units . When budgets are so tight, Greenkeepers may just have to prolong the life of an existing triple greens mower that needs replacement cutting units . That’s a dilemma because they may not want to be tied to the same brand when they are able to replace the machine .

But TM SMARTCut™ cutting units are unique in that they can be fitted to Toro, John Deere or Jacobsen units with only a minor adaptation so they can be used with the new machine, whatever the make. That’s also a bonus if they have a mix of makes in the workshop right now. It’s a truly unique and valuable piece of versatile equipment, with outstanding build quality to stand the test of time and stretch budgets further.

Designed for both Tees and Greens, the TM SMARTCut™ offers ease of maintenance with 7 & 11 blade options available. The bedknife adjusts

incrementally to a fixed position cylinder to achieve a consistency and quality of cut that is guaranteed comparable, or better, than current OEM units. This allows a cutting height range of 1.6mm to 25mm, all of which provide superb results in all situations. Another option is a Groomer which can be installed and removed in rapid fashion. It contra rotates to achieve the maximum effect in alleviating grain and turf density problems.

Rolawn’s renowned Medallion turf has been laid in the spectacular landscape gardens which envelope the new Peter Buckley Learning Centre at RHS Garden Rosemoor in Devon.

The learning centre was officially opened by Alan Titchmarsh in April and has been designed around a gardening education philosophy; to provide learning facilities within a low carbon building. More than 7,000 school children from across the region will benefit from the learning centre’s facilities every year.

Jonathan Webster, Curator commented “we needed to lay quality turf for the

official opening of our new Learning Centre at RHS Garden Rosemoor and had only two weeks from the end of the building works to the big day to get the turf laid and looking good. We chose Rolawn Medallion turf because of the uniform quality seed mix and as we have used it in the past and knew that it is of a high standard which would look good quickly. Using the 13m2 large rolls we managed to lay the turf quickly and with ease.”

Manufacturers of Timber Drying Kilns for over 30 years

Over the last three years, the fencing sector has become an increasingly important market for Kiln Services Ltd. With many companies installing kilns to ensure they obtain the correct penetrations and chemical loading by drying down to fibre saturation point prior to treatment. This helps to

ensure that the preservative impregnation standards of BS8417:2011 can be achieved and in particular where the minimum desired service life of 15 years defined in the Standard is required for components destined for Use Class 4 (ground contact) applications. The lack of preservative

penetration and loading is almost always related to a high mosture content in timber prior to treatment.

When drying species that are classed as “resistant to treatment” such as spruce, care should be taken not to dry below the fibre saturation

point; a final moisture of 33% usually provides the best results. Drying programmess should be modified to ensure maximum temperatures do

not exceed 65º centigrade, with relative humidity no lower than 55%. These programmess will extend the drying time but avoid the outer layers drying too quickly leading to pit closure and a resistance to penetration.

Although there is obviously a cost in removing a proportion of the

moisture content prior to treatment, this is minimal when compared with the replacement and installation of a failed product, but just as important,

the possibility of customers turning to other less sustainable materials due to a misguided lack of confidence in timber, for those companies

producing waste wood by products, the renewable heat incentive also opens up new opportunities for reducing drying costs. For more

information please contact Kiln Services Ltd.

This spring Haynes have followed their renowned manual format and produced a concise step-by-step guide to garden landscaping to help amateur gardeners create an attractive outdoor haven .

The Haynes Garden Landscaping Manual explores the landscaping options available to the amateur gardener and describes practical projects that even a complete beginner could tackle.

With colour photography throughout, each project is clearly explained with step-by-step instructions. It covers the full range of popular hard and soft landscaping techniques, from laying paving and building walls to choosing plants and adding lighting, structures and water features.

With today’s hectic pace of life our gardens are no longer just a practical

necessity for drying clothes, growing veg or exercising kids and pets. Neither are they purely ornamental, as the grounds of well-healed households once were. Instead they must fulfil a wide range of roles, from the traditional ones to those which allow us to make more of our time; relaxing, entertaining and even working outdoors.

All of this has meant that garden design has changed in recent years. Once, well-groomed collections of beautiful and unusual plants were at the top of the typical gardener’s wish list. Now, however, space in which to relax and entertain is the priority, often twinned with a desire for a low-maintenance arrangement that doesn’t place too great a demand on the owner’s time.

Hard landscaping expert Marshalls recently launched it’s very own online Garden Scrapbook . An industry-first comprehensive design tool, the Marshalls Garden Scrapbook has been developed to encourage people to tackle their outdoor projects and be more creative in their garden planning, whether they’re planning on asking an expert for help or are DIY-ers themselves .

Like a traditional, offline scrapbook the Garden Scrapbook lets users collect inspiration (photos, swatches, videos, products) from all over the internet, arrange it into their garden, play with different designs and colour schemes, discuss and share it with friends.

Users can choose from a range of pre-set themes or start with a blank canvas to fill. Other tools, like a garden visualiser and patio planner are integrated into the scrapbook to make it easy to translate the scrapbook into a real garden.

Mark Gregory, twelve-time Chelsea Gold medal winner, has tested the Garden Scrapbook and will provide design and landscaping tips on the website over the coming weeks.

He says: “What I love about the Marshalls Garden Scrapbook is that it demystifies the garden design process and makes it available to everyone in a pretty clever, dynamic and completely new way. The process it guides you through is actually very similar to the way professionals approach garden design. People can explore, play, collect and share. They can also experience the fun and the beauty of garden design that until now has been reserved for us professionals.”

TRADA, the Timber Research and Development Association, is warning the UK timber industry that, under the forthcoming Construction Products Regulation (CPR), not only will CE marking become mandatory, but that the whole supply chain will share responsibility for CPR compliance .

TRADA Membership & Marketing Manager Rupert Scott, said: ‘We are facing the most significant change for a decade in the way in which construction products are manufactured and sold in the European Union. Most affected will be the UK, Ireland and Sweden, because in those countries CE marking will become mandatory instead of voluntary for many construction products when the CPR comes into force.’

The CPR will replace the Construction Products Directive (CPD) throughout the European Economic Area (EEA) in 2013. Mr Scott added, ‘The CPD made a flawed assumption that manufacturers sell their products to the end user.

In reality, manufacturers outside the EU, may well put their products into a supply chain, not knowing where they will end up, or indeed the end use they may be put to.’

Under the CPR, he stressed, ‘there will be a greater legal responsibility for compliance with agents and importers. This shows much more of a “chain of custody” approach.’ Going further, importers will not be able to sell non-compliant products, but must assure themselves that the manufacturer has done ‘all that is required’ to demonstrate compliance with the CPR. The name and contact details for the importer must appear on the product, labelling or associated documents. Mr Scott said, ‘This responsibility may even extend to testing and working with enforcing authorities. Distributors will have similar duty of care obligations to importers.

TRADA has produced a Construction Briefing for members, ‘The European

The future of forestry in England is in the spotlight once again . Having made an embarrassing U-turn on its plans to change the ownership and management of the public forest estate in England, the Government announced the formation of an independent advisory panel on forestry . The Panel of twelve, which is Chaired by the Bishop of Liverpool, is to advise Caroline Spelman MP, the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on the future of forestry policy in England and on the role of the Forestry Commission . The Panel is expected to provide an interim report in the Autumn, with a final report likely to be produced in Spring 2012 .

In addition to undertaking a series of visits throughout England, the first of which will be to Northumberland, Kent and the forest of Dean, the Panel are now seeking comments from everyone with an interest in forestry in England, so now is the time to have your say. It is a matter of considerable importance that industry’s perspective is presented to the Panel, as there is a real risk that industry’s voice, (which DEfRA had already decided not to include on the Panel), will be lost amongst the many submissions from those with leisure, recreation, wildlife and biodiversity interests. Many people do not appreciate the commercial aspects of forestry and the economic benefits that forests, woodlands and wood products provide. The last thing we want to see is the transformation of England’s productive forests and woodlands into a woodland theme park.

A balanced approach to forestry in England is essential if we are to make the most of this unique natural resource. DEfRA must recognise the valuable economic, social and environmental benefits provided by our sustainably managed forests and woodlands and the products derived from them. furthermore, the contribution that wood and wood products make to climate change mitigation, the delivery of a low carbon economy, sustainable development and supporting the rural economy must be recognised.

England’s forests and woodlands already provide timber, leisure, recreation and biodiversity. Commercial timber operations exist comfortably beside the provision of other benefits; and for forestry Commission England, significant revenue from its timber production helps to offset the costs of providing a wide range of other public benefits.

The Panel is also there to give advice on the Government’s proposal to sell-off 40,000 hectares from the public forest estate in England. We need more trees, not less and put simply, the sell-off should be scrapped.

Much is at stake here and our industry must shout its message from the rooftops . Have your say now by responding to the Panel; see www .defra .gov .uk/rural/forestry/panel for more information .

Forest Garden, one the UK’s leading manufacturer of decorative garden timber products, has further invested in its manufacturing processes with the introduction of automated machinery capable of increasing the company’s annual shed production by 25% .

As one of forest Garden’s core volume products, sheds represent a key product group for the company. The £50,000 investment in new automated machinery

will not only increase production efficiency, but will also help to increase the volume run of product that can go through forest Garden’s manufacturing facility in Hartlebury, Worcestershire.

John Gomersall, sales and marketing director at forest Garden, said, “With the demand for sheds staying strong we felt that now is the right time to invest in our manufacturing process, with the ultimate aim of increasing both

volume and efficiency. The introduction of the new machinery enables us to offer what we believe to be the largest garden shed manufacturing facility in the whole of Europe. This is an exciting prospect, and means that we are well placed to meet demands in even the busiest of seasons.”

“the Best thinG since sliced BRead”The work of a landscape contractor is both varied and at times unpredictable; above all else it requires a machine of versatility, one that can do the job, and do it well .

Andy Clegg of Ardvark Home and Garden Services based in the Isle of Man has been a contractor for many years but has recently been in search for a piece of kit that would make his work that little bit easier, and in february this year he found just that. Step forward the Kanga Kid Series 2 TK216.

“Living here in the Isle of Man, I hadn’t really been aware of Kanga’s range of loaders, but I quickly learnt more about them through my local plant hire shop. I got a catalogue and noticed the TK216 straight away, typical ‘boys and their toys’!

After purchasing an ex-demo model that had only thirty hours on the clock, Andy got straight to work.

“Without a shadow of a doubt the Kanga Kid has been an absolute godsend, it is the most impressive machine I think I’ve ever worked with. Since buying it my shovel and my wheelbarrow have been made redundant.”

So what are the loaders main benefits we asked Andy? “That’s easy, it’s size!

It’s so compact you can literally get it in and out of anywhere. There really is no job that it cannot do; it enables you to load more, shift more and extract more. I’ve had people pass me in the street whilst I’m working to ask me who manufactures it and if I can do a job for them too!”

The Kanga Kid was first released in 2001, becoming the ‘World’s Smallest and Most Affordable Tracked or Wheeled Mini Loader’. It is now available in two models, KK216 and the TK216 both powered by Honda Vee Twin electric start engines. Andy is such a fan of the TK216 model, he’s already thinking about his next purchase, “I want everything in the range; every model, every implement, every attachment, everything!”

Andy is certainly not alone with his opinions, more and more of you contractors are discovering the benefits the Kanga Loaders can bring to your business.

If you would like more information on any of the models in the Kanga range visit www .kangaloader .co .uk or call 0845 260 4800 .

in a siGniFicant develoPment, BoBcat is launchinG a neW GeneRation oF 6 and 7m telehandleRs. These new generation models offer a range of improvements and several features, benefits and options that are completely new not only to the Bobcat telehandler family, but also to the industry as a whole . For example, a patented asymmetric cab takes visibility to a new level by offering an unobstructed view across the rear of the machine while an optional 190l/min load sensing pump offers faster speeds when performing single and combined boom movements .

The new generation TL360 and TL470 telehandlers have lift capacities of 3.0 and 3.5 tonne, respectively. Both machines offer a lift capacity at full height of 3.0 tonne. The maximum forward reach of the TL360 is 3365 mm, while that of the TL470 is 4002 mm, the lift capacity at full reach being 1300 and 1500 kg, respectively.

Thanks to the design of a new patented asymmetric cab, the right rear corner is completely free of structural components, offering the operator an unmatched and unobstructed visibility across the entire rear of the machine. In addition, the lowered boom pivot point further improves visibility. The rounded front windscreen offers full visibility of the attachment at all heights and boom extensions. This ensures the operator has full awareness and control over the load at all times, significantly improving productivity and safety.

R H Ovenden Ltd, the materials and waste recycling company based at Aylesham near Canterbury in Kent, has purchased a new Doosan DX225LC crawler excavator from Promac Solutions Ltd, the authorised Doosan dealer for South East England . The reasons for purchasing the new DX225LC excavator include the high productivity, operator comfort, safety

and low maintenance offered by the machine . The new DX225LC is based at the Ovenden transfer station at Tilmanstone, where the machine sorts and stockpiles materials such as construction waste, hardcore, concrete, soil, metals and wood brought to the site by customers or in the company’s own fleet of waste trucks and skips .

neW doosan excavatoR at Rh ovenden ltdThe excellent working range and lift capacities of the DX225LC contribute to the high productivity offered by the excavator. One of the principal applications for the machine at Ovenden is for sorting, storing and reloading wood waste. With specifications that include a maximum digging reach at ground level of 9.3 m and a maximum dump height of 6.83 m, the DX225LC has the range to work quickly in and around the

wood pile, both storing and unloading wood for recycling.

To meet Ovenden’s requirements, Promac Solutions fitted an additional rotation circuit to the DX225LC excavator so that it can operate a grab attachment to handle the wood waste. The machine’s operator, John faithfull, uses the grab to stockpile the wood waste brought to the transfer station, before using the grab again to reload the wood from the pile into articulated

trucks for onward supply to chipboard manufacturers. All of the features on the DX225LC combine to allow Mr faithfull to fully load one of the articulated trucks in just 25 minutes.

Mr faithfull added: “The joystick controls on the DX225LC telescope up and down to suit my preferences and are simple to operate, making it easy to carry out precise machine movements, while supplementary buttons are available for control of additional equipment such as the grab and shear attachments.”

R H Ovenden Ltd was established in 1966 by the late Robin Ovenden with just one lorry. It is one of a number of Ovenden companies that together provide a comprehensive range of services to both the construction and agriculture industries. These range from large scale haulage and plant hire operations to demolition and agriculture solutions.

Remote controlled Bobcat loaders have been sent to help in the disaster recovery work following the earthquake and tsunami in Japan . Bobcat is working with QinetiQ North America, a technology, responsive services and innovative solutions company, to provide unmanned Bobcat loaders and associated training to aid in Japan’s recovery efforts .

Two Bobcat T300 compact tracked loaders equipped with 2 m wide industrial grapple attachments have

been shipped to Japan to aid in disaster relief work. The Bobcat loaders have been supplied with Robotic Appliqué Kits from QinetiQ, which turn the loaders into unmanned machines in just 15 minutes, increasing safety in recovery tasks as the machines can access less stable environments without an operator in the cab.

To be stationed in Japan for rapid, on-call deployment, the unmanned Bobcat loaders include seven cameras, night vision, thermal imagers, microphones,

two-way radio systems and radiation sensors and can be operated from more than a mile away to safely remove rubble and debris, dig up buried objects and carry around smaller equipment. They will help Japan’s response teams to accomplish critical and complex recovery tasks at a safer distance from hazardous debris and other dangerous conditions.

QinetiQ North America is also stationing TALON and Dragon Runner robots in Japan in the event they are needed.

TALON robots have previously withstood rigorous deployment and twice daily decontamination at Ground Zero. In addition to the unmanned equipment, a team of QinetiQ North America technical experts will provide training and support to Japan’s disaster response personnel.

We mouRn the death oF alan PeRReY

It is with great sadness that we report the untimely death of LAMMA Show Chairman, Tony Lighton, following a brief illness .

With more than thirty-five years of involvement with tractors produced under the Marshalls of Gainsborough banner, particularly Track Marshall crawlers, After joining Marshalls on a commercial apprenticeship in 1964, he spent two years on the shop floor, followed by two years of commercial training before, in 1968, being appointed Office Manager. After spells as both a Regional Sales Manager and National Sales Manager, Tony became World Sales Manager for Track Marshall in 1982.

Despite a hectic work schedule Tony also served as a Director of the Gainsborough

Building Society from 1972 up to its merger with the Yorkshire Building Society in 2001.

The traumatic period of business rationalisation during the late 1970’s & 80’s had a dramatic effect on the then Marshall Tractors company. A series of changes in ownership of the business between 1975 and 1998 culminated in the purchase of the Track Marshall business by Tony’s own company TMS Gainsborough Ltd.

In the Autumn of 2000, Tony became Chairman of the Lincolnshire Agricultural Machinery Manufacturers Association, the organisers of the LAMMA Show, a position he held up to his death. During his Chairmanship the LAMMA Show grew from a small regional event to become the UK’s largest and most

The last time we caught up with Terry Maguire of Trentham Fencing the future looked blindly bright, and rightly so . The word ‘recession’ had barely been uttered and the industry was well and truly thriving .

fast-forward four years and the current climate couldn’t look more different; the economical downturn has left many companies fighting for survival and has caused the fencing trade to become increasingly competitive.

Trentham fencing, it seems, is an exceptional company. Terry and his team have managed to keep their heads above water and now have real business prospects on the horizon.

So how have you managed to stay afloat we asked? “Whilst it is now a very competitive market place, we like to think that we do things with a personal touch, we’re not at all aloof. We try to keep things friendly but still work to maintain a certain level of professionalism.”

Terry’s contracting career began in the early eighties when he worked primarily for building merchants and on timber yards. Around this time, Graham fosterer (who was once one of Terry’s customers) decided to set up Trentham fencing and asked Terry to get on board, an offer he quickly accepted.

“Originally we were only a small domestic outlet so to see how far we’ve come

tRentham FencinG: stRaiGht talkinG & haRd WoRkinGlucie caRteR talks With manaGinG diRectoR teRRY maGuiRe

is fantastic. Now we work in both the commercial and industrial markets, but also remain incredibly loyal to our roots in the domestic markets too,” Terry explains. “The bulk of our work now comes from recommendations, so I strive to keep that side of the work going. We always like to look after people locally in around Stoke and Trentham on a more domestic level, whereas the industrial work takes us far and wide.”

Recently Terry and the Trentham team successfully tendered for a contract based in Northern Ireland that required them to erect security fencing around the coastal docks. The company has also carried out work for the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and a number of local authorities, schools and colleges, as well as commercial properties both locally and nationally.

for industry expert Terry, the customer is always the main priority; “We get so many word-to-mouth recommendations because we don’t make promises we can’t keep, we are always straight with people. I often find nowadays that more and more people are let down by their contractors so I’ve always tried to sustain reliability and customer service.”

Another major concern for Terry is health and safety, and where this topic is concerned there really isn’t any room to take chances; “because there are always new methods and new ways of doing things, my staff receive training

Terry Maguire

year on year. We certainty don’t just pick any body up, these are guys who have worked for us for the past twenty years. Health and Safety is very high on the agenda, so we ensure all our contractors are fully-accredited and approved.

Trentham fencing offer customers an estimating, design and advice package that ensures that customers make the best, well-informed decision.
