FEMALE CHAMPIONSHIP

HOBART TASMANIA

25 NOVEMBER - 1 DECEMBER

2015

2015 CHAMPIONSHIPS PREVIEWNew South Wales will look to further cement their standing as the most dominant underage team in the tournament’s history, looking to for the second time claim four titles in a row. Playing on the even wickets of Hobart, the rising stars will have a chance to impress national selectors with both bat and ball. Never before has there been more opportunity for the girls, with the Women’s Big Bash League beginning this year, with many girls eyeing a spot on a franchise roster.

KOOKABURRA WELCOME MESSAGEWelcome to Cricket Australia’s Underage National Championships for 2015/16.

First of all, welcome and congratulations to the players who have gone through their State/Territory selection process which is an achievement in itself. These National Championships are about opportunities not only for the players but also the coaches and their support staff, the umpires, the local organising staff, groundsmen, and many other volunteers

All of you have achieved a great deal to come this far and we wish you every success in the tournament. This is just one opportunity Australian Cricket has to offer you to take this experience and build on it. Enjoy the competition and good luck!

The Cricket Australia Underage Female Championships have been the biggest contributor to the national teams setup since its inception. A vital part of the Australian Cricket pathway, these competitions may

be the first time players represent their state at an elite level which will no doubt lead to opportunities and the emergence of Australia’s next great talents.

These championships are a proven breeding ground for Australia’s next crop and have produced current international players such as Meg Lanning, Ellyse Perry and Elyse Villani. With the new addition of the Women’s Big Bash League for the world’s best female cricketers, the opportunities are more plentiful than ever before.

I encourage all players to embody the cricketing spirit and for all involved to get along and support Australia’s future stars.

Jessica Jonassen nearly claimed the mantle of one of the elite few to have scored a century on Test debut. Her 99 made it not-to-be, but her title as Queensland’s first ever female underage championship captain won’t ever be erased.

“Being part of the very first under 15s Queensland team and actually winning it was something that really stands out, I know it holds a really important place in Queensland history as well, to be a part of that and to captain the team was something really special,” Jonassen said.

Before Queensland’s entry into the competition, Victoria and New South Wales played four matches against each other yearly but gradually other states became involved.

Jonassen’s Queensland took the title in 2006-07, with the Southern Stars all-rounder also claiming “Player of the Championships”.

“My pathway through cricket was that I went through Under 15s, 18s and 19s state teams, I then transgressed through there to the Fire and Southern Stars.

“Throughout those Under 15 and Under 18 championships I played against Sarah Coyte, Megan Schutt and to now be able to now call them teammates for the Southern Stars, to see where they have come and evolved into is pretty great.”

Jonassen has lauded the program that has produced the likes of Meg Lanning, Ellyse Perry and Elyse Villani and has some sound advice for the next crop of the young Stars.

“I think it is vital to be able to provide the girls a pathway from a young age considering

they start from Under 12s in the Schools competition, then to have the talent camps

for the 15s and 19s girls, it shows them they have somewhere special to go.”

“It’s a matter of keeping things simple and having fun, we have that mantra at the national level too, if we are having fun and enjoying ourselves the results generally take care of themselves.”

2014/15 REVIEWOnce again it was the New South Wales girls that claimed victory but not without fright, as the Queensland squad topped the table moving into the final rounds. Unfortunately for the Maroons, it was their rivals that took away the title and in doing so extended their margin of victories to 10 from 14 carnivals. Player of the Championships Saskia Horley took 14 wickets to move to equal-second on the all-time leading wicket taker leaderboard behind Queensland Fire spinner Jemma Barsby.

The Cricket Australia Under 15 championship was first played in December 2001 and has quickly evolved over the last six years.

It was initially conducted as a pilot program with Victoria hosting New South Wales.

Four matches were played consisting of 25 overs per innings.

In 2003-04 the competition was extended to a 35 over format. South Australia joined the competition, with

NSW and Victoria also producing a combined invitational team to make a

four-team championship.

In 2005-06 the ACT joined the championship, producing a four state competition, then for the first time in 2006-07, the championship included Queensland, with each match 40-overs per side.

In 2009/10 Tasmania played for the first time while the format became a combination of 20 & 40 over matches. WA joined in 2010/11 ensuring that all states were represented.

UNDER 15 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPSThe Cricket Australia Underage National Championships

are an integral step in the umpire pathway. The Championships provide a challenging environment for umpires, who are tested by travelling to a new city; standing in matches with new partners and managing unfamiliar teams at foreign venues all within a two week period.

Each state and territory nominates one preferred candidate to attend the Championship. For the two additional positions available, states are invited to

nominate a second umpire, with the Umpire High Performance Panel (UHPP) making the final decision on the final two umpires.

Members of the UHPP and the CA Umpire Educator will then attend the Championships to observe and provide assessments for each of the individuals. On ‘rest’ days, the umpiring group will attend education and training sessions to assist their continual development on and off field.
