Leadership NORTH is an annual leadership development program for communities in the north capi-tal region. The Zachary Chamber of Commerce hosts the program with assistance from Louisiana Depart-ment of Economic Development and LSU Ag Center.

Participation in the program is open to persons living or working in the cities of Baton Rouge, Zach-ary, Central or Baker, or the parishes of Pointe Coupee, East Feliciana or West Feliciana who have the full support of the organization or busi-ness they represent. The committee seeks a cross-representation of these communities.

Accepting Applications for Leadership NORTHThe program is designed to en-

gage emerging leaders in the re-gion and prepare them to meet the future needs of these communities. Through the exchange of viewpoints and experiences, participants are ex-posed to the challenges, opportuni-ties and vital issues affecting the northern Baton Rouge region.

To graduate from the Leader-ship NORTH program, a participant is expected to attend all sessions, which occur once a month from March to September. Topics which will be discussed include, leadership styles, best-practices, state govern-ment, strategic communication, co-operation and negotiation, and eco-

nomic development. Specific dates and times for each session are pro-vided in the application.

If you are interested in participat-ing in the 2013 Leadership NORTH program, you may visit http://cloud.chambermaster.com/userfiles/UserFiles/chambers/859/File/LN-2013Application.pdf to download the application, fill it out, and return it to the Zachary Chamber of Com-merce by January 31, 2013.

Individuals may also nominate an “emerging leader” by filling out an application on his or her behalf.

Firefighters Participate in Training at New Clinton Station

By nalini raghavan gore

Last Tuesday evening, several fire departments from around the Fe-licianas spent the chilly, rainy eve-ning in a special training exercise taught by LSU Fire Training Center instructor Bobby Stroles. The train-ing, which also involved classroom instruction the preceding evening, was on how to put out a large pro-pane tank fire.

The training took place at the Clinton Fire Department’s new head-quarters on Plank Rd. There were about 30 firefighters in attendance who came from departments all over the two-parish region including Clinton, Slaughter, Bluff Creek and West Feliciana. The propane for the training was donated by local busi-ness, Herring Gas.

Clinton Fire Chief Doug Beau-

champ explained that these coop-erative training sessions take place about six to eight times a year, but that “we need more of it.” In rural parishes where fire departments rely so much on volunteers and sharing resources through mutual aid, it is important to be familiar with the capabilities of neighboring depart-ments, Beauchamp explained.

“These training exercises are

necessary so that we are used to working with the other departments: knowing the people who fight fires in other departments, knowing the chiefs, knowing what equipment they have available and how to use their equipment,” said Beauchamp.

For this very reason, trainings ro-tate throughout the region during the year, with each department playing host for different training sessions.

Acclaimed Dance Institutions to Search For Local Talent

Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre (BRBT) will welcome American Ballet Theatre and Joffrey San Anto-nio dance companies in January and February to audition local dancers for their highly-respected 2013 sum-mer intensive programs.

Summer intensives are an ex-traordinary opportunity for local dancers to study under the supervi-sion of some of the most elite dance instructors in the country and ex-plore dance in a fresh perspective. Each year BRBT brings celebrated dance companies to Baton Rouge to audition not only local dancers but also regional dancers who travel to Baton Rouge in hope of attaining a coveted spot in a summer intensive program.

American Ballet Theatre audi-tions are Saturday, January 27 at 3 p.m. for dancers ages 11-14 and 5 p.m. for dancers ages 15 and older.

Joffrey San Antonio auditions are Saturday, February 2 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Joffrey San Anto-nio audition applicants must pay a $30 registration fee. Each company has a specific set of dance level re-quirements.

Participants must arrive 30 min-utes prior to their scheduled audition time for registration. All auditions

are open to the public and will be held at Dancers’ Workshop, 10745 Linkwood Ct., Baton Rouge.

American Ballet Theatre (ABT)is recognized as one of the great dance companies in the world, ac-cording to its website. Recognized as a living national treasure since its founding in 1940, ABT annually tours the United States, performing for more than 600,000 people, and is the only major cultural institution to do so.

Joffrey Workshop San Antonio’s distinguished faculty and staff aim to educate and develop advanced level dancers with professional dance education. Former Joffrey Ballet Company principal dancers will instruct Joffrey Workshop San Antonio students in classic ballet technique, contemporary, pas de deux and character dance in addi-tion to hosting dance career-related seminars, lectures and repertory re-hearsals.

For more information about summer intensive auditions or Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre, please con-tact Nicole Naquin or Leigh Phil-lips at 225-766-8379 or via email at [email protected] or [email protected].

This past Friday, District Attor-ney Sam D’Aquilla’s office held its annual Open House Breakfast at their St. Francisville office, invit-ing the public and local officials and employees to enjoy a hot breakfast cooked up by office staff, Audubon Cafe and Abeeya’s Bakery.

Colleagues, most-ly from the judicial and law enforcement fields, floated in and out of the office dur-ing the three-hour open house, enjoying some early morning camaraderie over king cake, bacon and eggs, and coffee. They were also the first to enjoy the building’s newly-finished wood floors and freshly-painted walls, improvements which were just com-

pleted two days earlier.D.A. D’Aquilla held the East Fe-

liciana counterpart of this event last year in mid-December. He said it is an opportunity to, “bring the com-munity together and let everybody know that we have an open door policy.”

Community Helpers as the recipi-ent of the $500 prize. Knowing how thrifty Mrs. Bellcase is, we know these funds will go a long way.

Over and over as the competi-tion progressed, Mrs. Bellcase ex-pressed sincere surprise–first at her nomination, second at being selected as a finalist, and finally when she was informed that she was the win-ner. I suppose for someone who has silently and selflessly worked for 25 years at the same mission, accolades are unexpected and beside-the-point. But for those of us whose lives aren’t lived in service, her efforts are be-yond admirable…they are amazing.

When we embarked upon our in-augural Hometown Heroes competi-tion, we envisioned an opportunity to highlight individuals who make a lasting impact on our communities but who are not often recognized for their service. The response we received from the public was over-whelming. Not only did we receive an outstanding pool of nominees, we also received hundreds of votes from the public who selected the hero that most inspired them. Thank you to everyone who participate; we hope

through this contest that we have provided a way for the community to sufficiently express its thanks, not only to Mrs. Bellcase, but to all of our nominees and finalists.

To the finalists: We are so appre-ciative of the time each of you gave to-wards this effort. We understand that revealing your thoughts and motiva-tions behind the service work you all provide can seem like an unnaturally public expression of something that is very private. But by sharing your sto-ries, we know that you inspired others to give a little more of themselves and to see the value in the un-glamorous, behind-the-scenes work that you all do. We know that your stories had an impact on the community because we were told so by readers … again and again.

To the nominators: Thank you for taking the time to submit your nominee. It is as great a gift to sit down and write 500 words by dead-line to honor the work of someone else as it is to actually do the work itself. Without your effort, the com-munity would never have come to know about these inspiring heroes; and for that, the community would have been a little poorer.

Nalini Raghavan, Editor

battling terminal cancer four years ago. Branch had the idea of a party, Mardi Gras style, that would also raise much-needed funds. “When Carrie’s husband took a turn for the worse, they were not able to contrib-ute as much time as they wanted to making this party come to life. At that time, Angie Cassard, principal at Rollins Place Elementary School in Zachary, stepped up to help make sure that not only did the party come to life, but that it would continue,” stated Engles.

The inaugural gala was held in 2010 at Hemingbough in St. Fran-cisville. The event that year raised $2,500 with only a few weeks to plan and produce. The following year, The Relay for Life commit-tee in West Feliciana came aboard to help, and the two teams together raised $10,000.

Realizing that a larger venue was needed for future galas due to the growing success, the event was moved to the Hilton in downtown Baton Rouge. “Last year was amaz-ing, and we raised $12,000 towards our goal,” said Engles.

The gala is a major fundraiser for the Zachary/Baker Relay for Life that is held each year, and the 2013 goal for the gala is $20,000.

For many of us, cancer will never touch our lives; but sadly, there are far more members whose lives have been touched by cancer. This year’s queen is Zachary resident Mrs. Dan-ya Doiron Delapasse, and her story is known to many. After a lengthy and inspirational battle with cancer, her husband, Dustin Michael Dela-passe, 38, passed away in September of 2012. It is stories such as this that inspire the committee for the gala to press on for a good cause while hav-ing a great time. Mrs. Delapasse will be joined by King Tom Ed McHugh.

This year’s event takes place on Saturday, February 2, 8 p.m. until midnight, at the Downtown Hilton, Riverview Ballroom located at 201 Lafayette St., Baton Rouge. This year’s event is sponsored by Lane Regional Medical Center.

General admission tickets are $75/person or $125/couple. For ad-ditional information, contact Renee Beadle at 225- 413-7282 or Carrie Godbold at 225-936-4898.

Celebrate a Loved One’s Milestone

Last of A Dying Breed riding club, a co-sponsor of the Feliciana Friends and Family Mardi Gras Pa-rade, has grown to almost 60 mem-bers. Established just a year ago, the club has travelled to several south-ern states to ride with other clubs from around the country. They have also earned a few accolades along the way, including second place for best organized horse club in uni-forms at the Southern University Homecoming Parade and first place for the same award during the Mar-ingouin trail ride.

During the second week of December, the club lost their beloved Vice President, Jerome “Roni” White. In his honor, the club lead his horse in the Centerville, Miss. Christ-mas Parade and rode together in Mr. White’s funeral proces-sion the follow-ing week.

Despite the loss of one of their leaders, the riders have regrouped and intend to carry on their mission of mentoring young riders.

As mentioned, the club will be co-hosting the 8th Annual Clinton Mar-di Gras Parade; they will also host their first annual trail ride and Mardi Gras dance following the parade (for details, see the Calendar of Events on page 8).

Currently, the group is raising money to fund the cost of uniforms for their youngest riders. Donations may be made to the group by calling Sheilla Flowers at 225-615-5137 or mail directly to Last Of A Dying Breed, P. O. Box 721, Clinton, LA 70722.
