Review the Daily Attendance Screen
Ensure that the student screen reflects the 15 unexcused absences within 90 calendar days (three consecutive months) for the student to be referred as truant.

After a student has had a minimum of five unexcused absences within a calendar month, absences for which the reasons are unknown, or ten absences within 90 calendar days, the parent must be advised of the unsatisfactory absences and the school must begin to provide services to prevent the truancy referral.
After 15 unexcused absences within 90 calendar days (three consecutive months), the school principal/designee will give written notice to the student’s parents.
This notice will request attendance of the parents at a Truancy Child Study Team meeting to discuss the attendance problem and identify potential remedies.
Board Policy 5200 Truancy “any student who has a total of 15 days unexcused absences from school within a 90 calendar day period will be considered habitually truant.”
This may result in a complaint of truancy filed by the Department of Juvenile Justice through a Social Service Agency. Inform the parent and student of the record of excessive absences , as well as the District’s intent to notify the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
Convene a Truancy Child Study Team Meeting
The principal and/or designee will hold a Truancy Child Study Team meeting with the parents.
During this meeting, the reasons for the student’s absences will be discussed.
Identification and recommendations for potential remedies and interventions will be reviewed.

school, beyond control of parent and other associated problems). ◦ Interventions currently provided by the
school (attendance agreement, counseling, progress report). ◦Pertinent medical history. ◦Parents recommendations.
◦Truancy Child Study Team Recommendations (schedule, curriculum, seating, teacher change, counseling, vision screening, Alternative Education Placement and other associated recommendations).

Consent Form for Mutual Exchange of Information
Complete the Consent Form for Mutual Exchange of Information and secure the parents signature. This will allow a mutual exchange of records pertaining to a particular student between the Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the Department of Juvenile Justice and their agents. In the event that the parent is unavailable or unwilling to sign, it shall be documented on the form.

Once the minimum required escalating services have been provided, and all reasonable efforts to resolve the nonattendance have been exhausted. The following SCM codes must be entered:

When student has met the criteria and the truancy
packet is completed and all requirements are met, the truancy packet is submitted to:

At this point, the Truancy personnel at Federal and State Compliance Office will:
a) Check each referral to ensure that all
required documentation is included and completed with the appropriate signatures.
b) b) On the PF19 ISIS screen entitled, Legal and Foreign Student Information, next to the Truancy option, a “Y” is entered.

c) Student will be referred to either Miami
Bridge Youth and Family Services, Inc. or Center for Family and Child Enrichment, Inc.
d) Agencies provide services to the student
and family.
A copy of the Truancy Referral Packet submitted to Federal and State Compliance Office must be filed in the student’s cumulative file.
Student flagged for truancy, will not count against the percentage of attendance of the school.
