After a student has had a minimum of five unexcused absences within a calendar month, absences for which the reasons are unknown, or ten absences within 90 calendar days, the parent must be advised of the unsatisfactory absences and the school must begin to provide services to prevent the truancy referral.

After 15 unexcused absences within 90 calendar days (three consecutive months), the school principal/designee will give written notice to the student’s parents.

This notice will request attendance of the parents at a Truancy Child Study Team meeting to discuss the attendance problem and identify potential remedies.

Board Policy 5200 Truancy “any student who has a total of 15 days unexcused absences from school within a 90 calendar day period will be considered habitually truant.”

This may result in a complaint of truancy filed by the Department of Juvenile Justice through a Social Service Agency. Inform the parent and student of the record of excessive absences , as well as the District’s intent to notify the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

During this meeting, the reasons for the student’s absences will be discussed.

Complete the Consent Form for Mutual Exchange of Information and secure the parents signature. This will allow a mutual exchange of records pertaining to a particular student between the Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the Department of Juvenile Justice and their agents. In the event that the parent is unavailable or unwilling to sign, it shall be documented on the form.
