Thin Places

From t ime to t ime fol ks send some wonder f u l s tor ies and jokes to me. Ever y once in a wh i le I f i nd one that’s so good that I have to sha re. Ray Fi lask y recent ly passed th is a long to me...

Postures of Prayer

“‘The proper way for man to pray,’ said Deacon Lemuel Keyes;‘The only proper a t t i tude i s down upon his k nees’

‘Nay, I should say the way to pray,’ said Reverend Doctor Wise ,‘Is s tanding s t raight with outs t re tched arms with rapt and upturned eyes.’

‘Oh , no, no, no,’ said Elder Snow, ‘such posture i s too proud .A man should pray with eyes fast- closed and head cont r i te ly bowed .’

‘It seems to me his hands should be austere ly c lasped in f rontWith both thumbs point ing to the g round ,’ said Reverend Doctor Blunt .

‘Last year I fe l l in Hodgk in’s well headf irs t ,’ said Cyr il Brown .‘With both my heels a- s t ick in’ up, my head a-point ing’ down;

And I done prayed r ight then and there; best prayer I ever said ,The prayin’est prayer I ever prayed , a- s tandin’ on my head .’”

Ou r Dai ly Bread , March 10

Than k you Ray, I nea rly spl i t my sides laugh ing. But th is i s more than an oppor t u n it y to sha re a f u n ny poem but a lso a reminder of ou r need to pray, rega rd less of post u re.

Recent ly I brought up the idea of “ th in places”, as i t i s a pa r t of ou r cu r rent chu rch s t udy. One way to def ine th in places is “a place where the bou ndar y bet ween heaven and ea r th is especia l ly th in , a place where we can sense the d iv ine more read i ly.” Ou r s t udy encou rages us to be open to ou r d reams as potent ia l th in places , and that i s ce r t a in ly a val id concept , but i t i s not the on ly one. P rayer is one of the other ways in which we can lean in a l i t t le closer to God and at t imes can be ver y th in indeed. Spi r i t ua l d iscipl ines a re pract ices we fol low in order to i ntent ional ly develop ou r spi r i t ua l l i fe and int imacy with God. It i s a del iberately sel f-imposed habit that nu r t u res spi r i t ua l health and foste r s spi r i t ua l g row th. Some of the spi r i t ua l d iscipl ines a re rather ev ident and su r pr isingly ord ina r y con-sider ing thei r ef fect on ou r l ives. P rayer, Bible read ing, sing ing / l i s ten ing to songs of fa ith , fas t i ng and the l i ke can a l l have a “ th in n ing” ef fect on us as we seek to be closer to God. Others a re a l i t t le d i f fe rent than the nor m. Center ing prayer, laby r inth wal k ing, and breathe prayers a re not t y pica l , but a lso incred ibly mean ingf u l and ef fect ive. W hatever d iscipl ine you pract ice, the main point i s that you pract ice i t reg u la rly and cont inuously.

The “ th in ness” tends to come as a resu lt of that reg u la r and relent less pu rsu it of prox imit y to God. W hen we open ou rselves to being close to God , then we a re more open to whatever i t i s that God is l i kely to sha re with and reveal to us . I f you a re i nte res ted in explor ing a lte r nat ive spi r i t ua l d isci-pl ines you can go to ht t p: //w w w.authent icd isciplesh ip.org /pdfs /2-spi r i t ua l-for mat ion /Spi r i t ua l%20Discipl ines /SF%201.0%20Int roduct ion%20to%20the%20Spi r it ua l%20Discipl ines.pdf. I f you get the newslet te r i n paper for m, I can send you the document th is l i n k would t ake you to, or g ive me a ca l l or send me an emai l and we can f ind some that may be g reat for you.

The point of a l l of th is i s to k now God , not simply k now about God. The Bible tel l s us that even the demons k now about God. Transfor mat ion comes in ou r l ives when we t ake that next s tep and t ake t ime to develop that relat ionsh ip and get to k now the one whom we worsh ip.

God bless you and da re to d ream big God-sized d reams!

Pastor Spencer

A look ahead at other project s that a re upcoming a re the replacement of the l ights on the l ight poles in the pa rk ing lot , repai r s to the cei l ing in the Sanct uar y, inter net in the youth bu i ld ing and the add it ion of a projector/screen for the music team.

The fol lowing was submit ted by ou r Lay Leader, Jim my Mil ls , as a response to ou r Dist r ic t Su-per intendent’s Let te r ask ing us to s t udy and submit answers to th ree quest ions for ou r Charge Conference which was held on October 23, 2016. Those th ree quest ions were:

W hat is God’s wi l l for ou r cong regat ion? How do we k now? W hat wi l l we do about it?

Response to Distr ict Super intendent’s Let ter for Charge Conference October 23, 2016

Mat thew 5:13-16New Inter nat ional Version ( NIV)

Salt and Light

13 “You a re the salt of the ea r th. But i f the salt loses it s sa lt iness , how can it be made salt y again? It is no longer good for any th ing, except to be th rown out and t rampled under foot .

14 “You a re the l ight of the world . A town bui lt on a h i l l can not be h idden.15 Neither do people l ight a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on it s s t and , and it g ives l ight to ever y-one in the house. 16 In the same way, le t you r l ight sh ine before others , that they may see you r good deeds and glor i f y you r Father in heaven.”

That verse says a lot about what the chu rch and ind iv iduals who make up the chu rch should be. Th is verse a long with a devot ion spoke to me about the quest ions you asked in you r request of June 14, 2016. I wi l l Pa raph rase the devot ion done by Scot t y Smith as fol lows:

“He said he had considered escaping the craz iness of chu rch l i fe , d isengaging f rom the chaos of h is cu lt u re, and enjoy ing the good Ch r is t ian l i fe , wait ing for the second coming. Then he real i zed that th is is not the l i fest yle Jesus redeemed us. Fu r ther he sa id that the chu rch was Jesus’ and we had t u r ned it i nto a club for ou r sat isfact ion.

He cont inued say ing that we were cal led and com missioned to be the salt of the ea r th. A quest ion of h is was ask ing how we lose ou r salt iness. How does the chu rch lose it sa lt iness , thei r v ision and thei r passion?”

With that he says that Jesus , is the on ly way to re -salt the desalted , to re -engage the d is-engaged and to br ing us back to gospel san it y. As a resu lt we took you r quest ions ser iously and prayer f u l ly. Consequent ly, we a re pleased to prov ide a response to you r request .

Specif ical ly we wi l l add ress the th ree quest ions; what is God’s wi l l for ou r cong regat ion? How do we k now? W hat wi l l we do about it? But f i r s t we wi l l a lso add ress ou r process.

THE PROCESS

In order to add ress th is request , a com mit tee consis t ing of the min ister, counci l chai r, for mer lay leader, s t af f pa r ish relat ions chai r and the cu r rent lay leader met to d iscuss the request . It was deter mined at that t ime to sol icit the help of the Sunday School classes and the youth to add ress the quest ions.

Because some members of the cong regat ion a re not involved in Sunday School , an an nouncement was made du r ing the chu rch t ime to sol icit the help of a l l who wanted to prov ide input to these quest ions. Copies of you r request were placed on the t able in the gather ing a rea for anyone to have, in order to underst and the request more f u l ly. Thei r com ments were sent to the lay leader. The com mit tee and the Sunday School teachers as wel l as the Youth Di rector were requested to meet to assemble the resu lt s of thei r separate d iscussions.

Be more i ntent ional about con nect ing with the u nchu rched who at tend and recon nect ing w ith those who have lef t the chu rch. 9. Min is t r ies for Singles , Divorcees and widows/widowers.

There were some add it ional thoughts but th is represented the simi la r topics .

W H AT W ILL W E DO ABOUT IT?

This l is t conta ins what we see as God’s wi l l for ou r cong regat ion. Basical ly they a re the same as we have been doing: however, we felt that improvement in these a reas wi l l prov ide for more success in those min-is t r ies we now do. As we go th rough th is l is t we wi l l not t r y to t ack le a l l a t one t ime but real ly improve them instead of just super f icia l ly add ressing them.

The most impor t ant on the l is t wi l l be at tempted f i r s t such as helping the cong regat ion to g row spi r it ual ly. I f we a re able to improve ou r awareness and focus on ou r relat ionsh ip with God , we wi l l be more passion-ate about the min is t r ies we cu r rent ly do. That by it sel f wi l l help us improve in those a reas.

HOW DO W E K NOW?

In ask ing for input f rom al l of the classes , youth and ind iv iduals , we speci f ical ly requested that th is be prayer based. We a re cer t a in that the members prayer f u l ly considered the quest ions. Ver i f icat ion of th is was the simi la r responses f rom al l who responded. A nother ver i f icat ion was the cal l for spi r it ual g row th and a bet te r foundat ion in the Bible. Th is would ind icate that God was involved in th is l is t .

Therefore, decid ing to improve the min is t r ies we now do wi l l bet te r ser ve God and the members of the chu rch. It wi l l a l low us to g row as Ch r is t would have us g row, whi le at the same t ime improving ou r min is t r ies . From the feedback we got th rough the d iscussions in the classes and f rom the youth , there is a hunger for Bibl ical underst and ing and an improvement in ou r relat ionsh ip with Ch r is t . We feel s t rongly that th is is the appropr iate d i rect ion for ou r chu rch to g row in Ch r is t , then wor-sh ip and ser ve Him.
