STUDENTS IN THE MEDIA:

JBAS students, Sameeha Shaik and Moyineh Fathima of 3rd B.A English literature created

history by winning the prestigious Elihu Yale debate conducted on March 3rd at Chevalier T.

Thomas Elizabeth College for Women in collaboration with The Indo-American association

Chennai. The topic for the debate was “Demonetization – will it heal or hurt our economy?”

Indo- American Association has been consistently holding the Elihu Yale debate since 1973. It is

Page 15: FEBRUARY- MARCH 2017 ISSUE - jbascollege · Dr. Sriyutha Murthy (Scientific Officer,BABA Atomic Research Centre, Kalpakkam) Topic - Interaction of Organisms @ the Nano- Bio Interface

15

named after Elihu Yale, a president of the East India Company Settlement in Fort St. George,

Madras. Their speech is as follows:

DEMONETISATION WILL HEAL THE ECONOMY.

“Change is hard at first, messy in the middle and gorgeous at the end.” said Robin Sharma, the

motivational speaker, the author of the the best seller “The Monk who sold his Ferrari.” This

exactly true with the case of demonetisation announced by the Indian Prime Minister at 8 pm on

8th Nov 2016. The announcement shocked the nation, people couldn’t believe it, politicians

became sceptical.

Ofcourse I am not going to talk about the hard and messy part of it but I am here to highlight the

gorgeous part of it. The PM’s motive to introduce demonetisation was to curb cross borderd

terror funding and to bring out black money. Cross bordered terror funding and black money are

like tumours in the body and it has to be treated or removed, only then the survival is possible.

As our Prime Minister said only a surgical demonetisation can cure it. Generally for cancer

Chemotherapy treatment is given which is very painful and has lot of side effects but when a

good doctor administers this treatment at the right time, inspite of the side effects , the cure is

certain after a period of time. This is what the “ONCOLOGICAL SURGEON” Mr. Narendra

Page 16: FEBRUARY- MARCH 2017 ISSUE - jbascollege · Dr. Sriyutha Murthy (Scientific Officer,BABA Atomic Research Centre, Kalpakkam) Topic - Interaction of Organisms @ the Nano- Bio Interface

16

Modi has given to India on the 8th of November. My worthy opponents would be talking about

the side effectsand pain but I would be focussing on the cure.

After the anouncement of Demonetisation 95% of demonetised currency has come back to the

banking systems, by depositing the demonetised notes it is not gonna become white but the

hoarded money has been channelised into the banking sectors, which means banks will have

more money for funding various developmental projects.

Good people have already come forward to disclose their wealth on their own, one such person is

Lalji Bhai Patel , a daimond merchant from Surat eho has surrendered 6000crores which is the

single largest amount disclosed by an individual.

Do you know how much the country is gonna gain by this disclosure?

It is 5400 crores that comes to exchequers (i.e) 30% tax for 6000 crores ewhich is 1800 crores

and 200% penalty on the tax amount 3600crores which amounts to 5400 crores.

In addition to such disclosures the Income Tax department has also conducted several rides

across the country and unearthed several 1000 crores.

So far in the process of demonetisation only 2 countries have succeeded one is the U.S.A and

other is Australia and ours is the third country in the list of succesful nation.

To tackle the problems of demonetisation, the Govt anounced cashless transactions which is

going to take the country to great heights in the economic sector.

When we do cashless transactions , everything is going to be legitimate, clean and white. You

may have to pay a percent or two by way of tax but this tax money is not going into any

individual’s pocket but to the government exchequer which in turn will reach the people in the

form of good infrastructure, hygenic living conditions, super speciality hospitals etc.

Normally business men and big traders go hand in hand with politicians , they fund huge sums

for their politicians and inturn they get a lot of favours from the ruling part which emboldens

them to carry out substanded work. To clamp this, the RBI has made an anouncement tha none

should donate more than 2000 rs to any political party without proper ID card, pan Card, now the

traders can work with a clean conscience and serve the society better.

Page 17: FEBRUARY- MARCH 2017 ISSUE - jbascollege · Dr. Sriyutha Murthy (Scientific Officer,BABA Atomic Research Centre, Kalpakkam) Topic - Interaction of Organisms @ the Nano- Bio Interface

17

These are the effects of demonetisation:

Civic Bodies have collected a tax of more than 14000 crores but in the previous year during the

same period it was only 3000 crores.

No terrorist attacks in the country after the anouncement, on the other hand Mavoists have given

up their guns due to cashless economy.

No bank robberies have been repoted, the price of essential comodities have come down.

Yesterday the PM anounced that the Indian GDP is on the upward swing.

Whom do you want to cerify, well the World Bank?

THE WORLD BANK SAYS” the after effects of demonetisation will disappear in the medium

terms and in the financial year 18-19 , India will be a force with among the world super powers.”

I can hear you all murmuring which means I have to wait for 2 more years?. Yes you have to

give some time for healing.

The healing is possible becasue of the people of this great nation who inspite of all the hardships

faced during the initial stages have not given up. There were long queues but no violence,

more than 100 people died but they are all martyrs and the nation would proudly

remember them on reaching the goal.

Finally I say that Demonetisation is gonna be a succes because of the youth of this country.

Statistics say that 74% of the Indian population is below 40 years which means they havent seen

the last demonetisation in 1978, but after that India has undergone a lot of turmoils in hands of

politicians but in the recent years youth have come to occupy the centre stage, they want a

change in every aspect, they are ready to face challenges, even sacrifice their lives. What I told

may sound empty words but if we recollect the Marina Awakening For Jallikattu , You cant deny

my words. The youngsters believed that there is no gain without any pain, so if I undergo the

pain now, my future and the future of the great nation will be very bright. “The secret of

Change is to focus all your energy not on fighting the old but building the new.”

Demonetization will hurt the economy

Page 18: FEBRUARY- MARCH 2017 ISSUE - jbascollege · Dr. Sriyutha Murthy (Scientific Officer,BABA Atomic Research Centre, Kalpakkam) Topic - Interaction of Organisms @ the Nano- Bio Interface

18

Pain, suffering, anguish and confusion was leashed on the common man on November 8th when

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that all higher denomination notes would cease to be a

legal tender. The promise which the Prime Minister made was that with this move, India would

be able to combat Black money, Drug mafia, Human trafficking and Terrorist funding. If

Demonetization was the answer to all these major problems of the world then every country

would have adopted this solution. According to me, Demonetization has not stood up to the hype

it has created. Let me remind the Prime minister most hoarders of Black money have only 6% of

it in cash and the rest is saved in Benami, real estate, gold and diamonds. So with this move the

rich have not been affected at all. Daily wage earners, people who live on hand to mouth

existence, are the main sufferers of this scheme.

Over a 100 people have lost their lives, dreams have been shattered, businesses closed, hunger

and loss of savings are the affects of Demonetization. After the announcement of this scheme

marriage of Karnataka MLAs daughter which crossed the expense of corers and many such

lavish parties have been thrown, through which it is known that the rich were never affected by

this move. This is the governments surgical strike on the common man of our country. India is a

Democracy, no one can become a dictator here and play with the innocent lives of people. When

the move did not fulfill its goal, it was deemed that India is heading towards Digitalization. First

I would urge the Prime minister to supply Electricity to the villages, give education and tackle

unemployment. Who wants digital India when a common man in India is struggling for two

meals per day? We want results,We want peace, We want the promises to be fulfilled and do not

make our lives even worse.

The new 2000 rupees note does not have any specific security features to tackle counterfeit

currency it is more over very easy to hoard this money as it is a higher denomination, and

within three months of the circulation of new notes, fake notes have been found and they have

50% of the security features. Long hours spent in standing in the queue, loss of work , loss of

labour, waste of time, this is what Demonetization has done to India. It has given a big blow to

the economy and to the people of India.
