February is known as a time to celebrate love, and one way to do that is to pour a lot of love into your artwork.  Our busiest art season is upon us.  The Call for Artists is already open for the 54th RCAS Annual Regional Art Exhibition and the entry deadline is March 9th!  Next up is the Spring Show and the Call for Artists will be open online on Saturday, March 15th .  I hope every RCAS member will enter one or both of these shows!  One of RCAS’s missions is to support projects that further the creative arts and empower artists of all ages.  To that end, we sponsor the annual Richardson

Independent School District’s Young People’s Show.  This year’s show will be hung in the 3rd floor gallery at the Richardson Public Library beginning on Friday, February 21st and will be taken down on Friday, March 13th.  There will be a winners’ reception on Tuesday, March 10th in the basement meeting room at the library from 6:00 to 7:00pm.  I hope you will all take the time to see the wonderful artwork of these high school students and I invite you to attend the reception as well. These young people are the future of the arts in Richardson and, hopefully, they will become members of the Richardson Civic Art Society when they are of age. Cecy Turner will be our demonstration artist at this month’s meeting. Many of you know and love her artwork already, so let’s give her a very warm welcome on Tuesday night!

Hope you had a wonderful Valentine’s Day!Linda Clary

My interest in art began at a young age when I started taking drawing classes in elementary school. I continued taking art classes through high school and into college, mainly focusing on pencil drawing. My interest in art led me to pursue a degree in Interior Design from Texas Tech University. My degree plan along with my decision to double minor in Architecture and Studio Art allowed me the opportunity to explore different art mediums in my classes, and that’s when I fell in love with watercolor painting.

After graduating from Texas Tech, I moved to Dallas in 2017 with my husband and our two dogs. I now split my time working as a watercolor artist, mainly selling online and in local shows, and part-time as a design consultant at the Daltile showroom in Plano. I sell my watercolor paintings, as well as prints and greeting cards, online through Etsy. I have also really enjoyed participating in several local art fairs, selling at Turtle Creek Fine Arts Festival last fall and participating in group shows through RCAS and Craighead Green Art Gallery.

I am inspired by nature and architecture and I love to capture the details and memories that make places unique in my art. I love to paint buildings, including commissions for new homes, wedding venues, and businesses, as well as old houses I stop to photograph on road trips throughout Texas. I especially enjoy participating in group shows and art fairs as a way to connect with people over art and meet other artists in the area.

At the January meeting, Tom Hands gave a presentation on Chasing Shapes Drawing and Painting. He emphasized using grids to transfer a drawing from a small photograph to a larger canvas or paper. By using the grid to capture just the shape within each grid, the artist gets a very close representation of the smaller image in the photograph.

Tom also showed some of his work in which he did not use the grid system and just drew or painted an image freehand. He challenged the audience to tell the difference between the results of the two techniques.
