How well do you know the MSU assistant basketball coaches? We sat down this week with two to learn more.

Asssistant Women’s Basketball Coach AMY SANDER:1. How long have you been coaching (throughout your career)? I have been coaching since 1997. I started at Albion College (MI) as an Assistant Basketball/Assistant Volleyball coach for 3 years. I then went to Buena Vista University (IA) where I was Head Volleyball/Assistant Basketball for 5 years. After that I was at Nebraska Wesleyan (NE) for 3 years as Head Basketball coach.2. How long have you been coaching at MSU? I came to MSU in 2008 so this is my seventh year with the program.3. Where did you play collegiate basketball? I played at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, OH (Division III). 4. What’s your favorite part about being a Maverick and/or working with head coach Emilee Thiesse? MSU has a tradition of excellence, who wouldn’t want to be a part of a program and athletic department that strives to be successful on a national level? We have a great coaching sta and tremendous group of players that make it easy to come to work every day. 5. What’s the most inspiring moment in your coaching career thus far? Being a part of the 2008-09 MSU National Championship team was so inspiring. To see a group of players come together and achieve the goal they set at the beginning of the season. They pure joy of the players celebrating on the court is something I will always remember.

Sander, a native of Genoa, Ohio, graduated from Baldwin-Wallace in 1995 where she earned a degree in sport manage-ment and was a two-time captain and a four-year letterwinner in basketball from 1991-95. In 1997, Sander graduated from Bowling Green State University with a master's of education and concentration in sport management. She currently resides in Mankato.

After that I came straight to MSU and am currently in my 14th season as a Maverick.2. Where did you play collegiate basketball? I played at Northeastern Illinois (1994-1996) until the athletic department folded, then played at SDSU (1996-1998).3. What’s your favorite part about being a Maverick and/or working with Margenthaler? My favorite part about being a Maverick is the relationships I have built with the sta as well as the student-athletes throughout the years. 4. What’s the most inspiring moment in your coaching career thus far? There have been a lot of inspiring moments in my coaching career - it’s hard to pick just one. I’d say the 2011 team making it to the NCAA Final Four.5. Anything else interesting that people might not know about you? I was recruited by and played for Coach Margen-thaler, before I started coaching with him at South Dakota State University.

A native of Winnebago, Ill., Schott is a 1999 graduate of SDSU where he was a forward on two North Central Conference championship teams, and was a member of a Jackrabbit team that captured a NCAA regional title and advanced to the Division II Elite Eight tournament in 1997.
