LIGHTING OF THE CANDLES, GREETING and NOTICES
PRELUDE
*INTROIT (11:00) Seek the Lord The Chancel Choir
*CALL TO WORSHIP (Responsively)
Life is full of twists and turns, great uncertainties, crushing
disappointments, confusion and derailment.
But here, we are reminded of God’s promises to us.
God of rainbow and promise,
God of the swirling waters of baptism,
God of the dark night of doubt,
God of comfort and call,
Dwell within us this holy season of Lent
Lead us from temptation to trust, from fear to love,
from despair to hope, from sadness to joy.
Our part is to accept each other with the steadfast love that
God has extended to each one of us!
We come to worship in that spirit.
*HYMN In the Midst of New Dimensions TFWS 2238
LENTEN JOURNEY FROM LIGHT TO DARKNESS
“There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came
as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through
him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light.
The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the
world.” Today as we extinguish a third candle on our journey from
light to darkness, we remember that Jesus looked down from the cross and said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.”
[The third Lenten candle is extinguished]
RESPONSE Jesus, Remember Me UMH 488 (2X)

HEBREW SCRIPTURE Genesis 9:8-17 (CEB)
8 God said to Noah and to his sons with him, 9 “I am now setting up my covenant with you,
with your descendants, 10 and with every living being with you—with the birds, with the
large animals, and with all the animals of the earth, leaving the ark with you. 11 I will set
up my covenant with you so that never again will all life be cut off by floodwaters. There
will never again be a flood to destroy the earth.”
12 God said, “This is the symbol of the covenant that I am drawing up between me and you
and every living thing with you, on behalf of every future generation. 13 I have placed my
bow in the clouds; it will be the symbol of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 When
I bring clouds over the earth and the bow appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember the
covenant between me and you and every living being among all the creatures. Floodwaters
will never again destroy all creatures. 16 The bow will be in the clouds, and upon seeing it
I will remember the enduring covenant between God and every living being of all the
earth’s creatures.” 17 God said to Noah, “This is the symbol of the covenant that I have set
up between me and all creatures on earth.”

Perhaps you noticed that our altar looks a bit different than it normally does. Are you
wondering why? Traditionally, during each of the four Sundays of the Advent season, we
light a candle on the Advent wreath as a visual symbol of the light of Christ coming into the
world and then on Christmas Eve we light the Christ candle as we celebrate the birth of that
light, Jesus. And so it is that during each of the six Sundays in Lent we will extinguish a
candle as a visual symbol that the light of Christ is dimming as we move toward the death of
Jesus on the cross. Our Holy Week Service will combine the themes of Holy Thursday and
Good Friday and will conclude with the extinguishing of the Christ candle.

One of the ways the Worship Committee has decided to observe Lent is by not having flowers on the
altar during this season of austerity and simple reflection. We hope this absence of flowers during Lent
(February 14-March 26) will amplify the resurrection message of the Easter flowers when they arrive!
If you are interested in donating flowers to grace our altar on one or more of these dates, please sign up
on the sheet posted on the hall cabinet across from the choir room or contact the church office.
The cost of the flowers is $50. After the service you may take the flowers with you or donate them to
be taken to a member in need. This is a wonderful way to honor or memorialize someone important in
your life!
The open dates for altar flowers are: May 1, May 29, Aug 14, Sept 4, Sept 11, Sept 18,
Oct 2, Oct 9, Nov 13, Nov 20, and Dec 11.
There are special Lenten Offering envelopes in the
pews or in the regular envelope packet you received
in the mail. If you feel God calling you to make a
special donation during this season, we want you to
know that the donations will go to support the many
and various missions and ministries of this church.
Specifically, any funds over $1,000 will go directly
to the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund which will be
used to assist those who are experiencing
difficulties and have special financial needs. If you
have any questions, please contact Pastor Candee.

Heart Havens began in 1993 as the result of a parent of a child with intellectual
disabilities asking her pastor: “Where will my child live when I am gone?” In
response to this question, and through subsequent discussions with parents
and service providers across the state, the Virginia Conference of the United
Methodist Church established Heart Havens to provide residential services
for adults with intellectual disabilities. While Heart Havens was born as a
ministry of the church, it has been a separate, non-denominational 501(c)3
nonprofit since 2003.
Today, Heart Havens builds and supports homes where adults with intellectual disabilities have the
opportunity to live in a family setting while making personal choices, achieving individual goals, and
contributing to the surrounding community. There are currently 11 Heart Havens homes across Virginia:
two each in Richmond and Lynchburg, and one each in Ashland, Virginia Beach, Newport News,
Kilmarnock, Colonial Beach, Winchester and Stuarts Draft. These homes accommodate over 50
individuals who are offered greater independence and dignity through training and support in life skills.
February is Heart Havens Month!
Due to Mother Nature our banquet has been rescheduled.
Have a Heart Banquet
Friday, March 11, at 6:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall.
A love offering will be taken for Heart Havens.
Please RSVP to the church office by March 7.

THANK YOU to all who participated in “A
Night’s Welcome” last week. I could not have
done it without you! We averaged 33 guests each
night. I truly believe our guests saw the face of
God through the Christian love and hospitality we
provided to them last week. They were very
appreciative of the hot meals and snacks we
served each day, the safe haven we provided so
they could watch movies, obtain clean socks and
needed toilettes, take showers, and sleep without
fear of something happening to them. Also my
thanks to those of you who were not physically
able to participate, but provided either socks /
toilettes, or most importantly, your prayers for this
very meaningful mission project. Carol Gardner

Water is a human right
At any given moment across the world, more than 663 million people are drinking water
that could be contaminated, yet don’t have any other real option. The challenge seems
overwhelming, but the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) work of the United
Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is helping more communities than ever before
gain access to clean water.
During 2015, WASH funded 18 local partners in 15 countries. These local faith-based
organizations, foundations and community groups are highly knowledgeable about the
needs surrounding them and help locate new water points, construct latrines and offer
educational programs promoting hand-washing and other potentially lifesaving practices.
“This is an unprecedented time for the UMCOR WASH program,” said Mike Barbee, the
program’s technical officer. “Thanks to our supporters, we hope to work with more
partners and reach more communities in 2016.”
WASH’s priority is to help people most in need of sustainable access to clean water,
sanitation and hygiene. UMCOR regularly works with its WASH partners to share ideas
for best practices so the global WASH movement is constantly strengthened at the
community level. UMCOR also carefully monitors and evaluates WASH activities,
demonstrating impacts and needs to supporters.
UMCOR WASH distributes funds based on needs across the world. Funding goes from
UMCOR into the hands of capable WASH partners who accompany and empower
families and communities to identify their water, sanitation and hygiene behavior goals
and decide solutions that will ensure continued access to clean water and healthy disposal
of waste. With local and national support, WASH partners are able to harmonize programs
with local economies, which helps people immediately and over the long term.
“Water is a human right,” said Barbee. “We at UMCOR are able to find and then rely
on capable partners who work with people on the ground to help them address their needs
in a participatory way. As we expand, we hope our supporters will help fund even more
projects that truly help people have access to a basic requirement of life.”
To become an UMCOR WASH supporter, donate to Advance #3020600.

The Rethink Church program sponsored by United Methodist Communications awards
three types of grants each year: Community Event Grants, Digital Advertising Grants and
New Church Start Grants. Three Virginia Conference churches received Digital
Advertising Grants in 2015: Madison UMC, Madison; Rose Park UMC, Wolftown; and
Wrights Chapel UMC, Ruther Glen. In addition, 10 Virginia Conference churches were
awarded 2016 Easter Digital Advertising Grants and will have customized digital ads
running in local online spaces Feb. 15-March 27. These churches are: Bethany UMC,
Weyers Cave; Farmville UMC, Farmville; Huntington Court UMC, Roanoke; Jamieson
Memorial UMC, Clarksville; Marquis Memorial UMC, Staunton; Norfolk UMC, Norfolk;
Redwood UMC, Rocky Mount; The Gathering at Scott Memorial UMC, Virginia Beach;

Discerning prayer will be focus of Bishop’s Convocation on Prayer
Changing the Way We Do Church: Praying for Discernment will be the focus of the
Bishop’s Convocation on Prayer Saturday, March 5, at Trinity UMC, 903 Forest Ave.,
Richmond. Dr. Frederick W. Schmidt Jr., Rueben P. Job Chair in Spiritual Formation at
Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, will be main speaker. In addition to Dr.
Schmidt’s plenary presentation, 11 workshops will be offered on different aspects of
spiritual formation. Participants may choose two workshops. Registration is limited to 450
and March 1 is the deadline. Questions may be directed to Marc Brown at
April 10 to be conference-wide day to pray for General Conference
The United Methodist Council of Bishops invited each annual conference to designate one
day to hold a 24-hour prayer vigil for General Conference. Bishop Young Jin Cho selected
Sunday, April 10, to be the day for the Virginia Conference prayer vigil. Each district is
invited to plan activities using resources being developed on both the conference and
general church levels. Organizers are encouraging districts to use a Prayer Wheel to allow
all congregations on the district to sign up for half-hour or one-hour increments so there
will be 24 hours of continuous prayer beginning at 12 a.m. April 10 and continuing until
12 a.m. April 11. As part of this initiative, the chapel in the Virginia United Methodist
Center in Glen Allen will be open for prayer. In addition, all congregations are asked to
include the prayer initiative in their Sunday services on that day. A common prayer that
can be used in all services will be part of the resources offered. For more information, go
