Wedding bands are all about love and personality

Much more than just an ordinary ring, a wedding band is the concrete sign of your marital status. It is also a symbol of the romantic union between you and your soul mate. Not long ago, a future bride and groom would have chosen a simple ring to mark this new stage in their lives. Today, wedding bands are made in the image of the couple and of their era, coming in original shapes and colours.

A wedding band should refl ect your personality, since it will likely stay on your ring fi nger for the rest of your life. Choosing the right one can present quite a challenge and is a good reason why current fashion or impulse should never rule over personal preference.

Wedding bands are now available in yellow, white, or pink gold. There are no longer any set rules for these rings, and more and more bands are set with precious stones. Future brides used to avoid sapphires, rubies, and emeralds but these stones are now very much appreciated by those who like the idea of a colour to match their personality. Just remember that overly large stones should be avoided; a wedding band should always be elegant and fairly discreet.

Rubies are particularly popular with couples. These precious stones are much rarer than diamonds and symbolize love, warmth, and vitality. The sparkle of the fi ery colour also symbolizes the beating of the human heart. Diamonds and rubies mounted together on a wedding ring represent the perfect mix of fi re and ice.

If you plan to exchange wedding vows with your beloved in 2012, you’ll want to stay on top of the latest bridal trends. The big designers worked feverishly all fall in order to present their most recent and beautiful collections in time for wedding season.

Months have passed since the royal wedding, but the Kate Middleton effect is still echoing in wedding dress boutiques. Dressed in her sumptuous gown, the Duchess of Cambridge launched the romantic trend that is all the rage at the moment.

Fit for a princess, romantic style dresses are recognized by their fi tted bodices and magnifi cent skirts, full of volume and texture. To create the balloon effect of a Cinderella-style crinoline, tulle is still the material of choice for designers. The layering of different textured fabrics, shimmering against matte, increases the depth of the

skirt, resulting in a supremely opulent look. A veil to cover the entire face or adorn the hair fi nishes the princess-bride effect.

In bridal collections as elsewhere, lace is becoming popular again, often appearing in a trim applied to the hem of the gown. The antique effect of a fl ounced dress is accentuated by opting for a colour such as eggshell or ivory, although these shades only suit certain complexions. Be sure to try on several dresses in varying tones of white in order to fi nd the best colour for you.

The romantic bride

The balloon skirt, so characteristic of the romantic style, confers a princess look to any bride.

On the wedding day, it may be true that all eyes are on the bride, but a well-dressed groom will still be appreciated. He is one of the main stars of this celebration, after all!

A classy and unique suit is on the agenda; after those criteria, the groom should choose a suit he feels comfortable in, one that corresponds to his personal style and that is tailored to his body shape. For an impeccably fi tted suit, the groom should have a last fi tting at the tailor’s, two or three weeks before the wedding.

The fabric of the groom’s suit should be chosen according to the season and its overall style should match the tone of the wedding; a suit is perfect for an afternoon wedding, while a tuxedo is required for an evening event. When choosing a suit, think of it as an investment; it should signal sophistication and elegance rather than offi ce-job functionality.

Once a suit has been chosen, the next secret to a refi ned look lies in the tie. A contemporary fi nish requires a tone-

on-tone tie that matches the colour of the shirt; it is a very attractive look, especially if both are pale in colour. Pale tone-on-tone will brighten up the complexion and highlight the smile.

Trends for the groom: tone-on-tone

Dressed to the hilt in all his fi nery, the groom will shine on his big day.

Choosing a wedding gift is not always an easy task. You might not know the couple well, which means you don’t really know their tastes or style, and you might not be sure how much money to spend.

A reasonable solution is to offer a gift certifi cate from a department or specialty store, or even cash. This kind of gift allows the couple to choose exactly what they need. Alternatively, you could offer them an item from a bridal registry at a department store. You can ask the bride or groom where they’re registered or ask at a store if the couple has set one up.

If you’re close to the bride or groom, you might consider a more intimate gift. A pair of him-and-her spa passes makes a nice outing for the couple as wedding prep stress begins to build, or you could offer a gift certifi cate for an evening out at a chic restaurant for when they return from their honeymoon.

Wedding guests often wonder how much they should spend on a gift. If your budget is limited, there are many ways to be generous without breaking the bank. You could offer a shared gift along with some friends, which would allow you to offer a single large item that none could afford

alone. You could make a gift of your time and help with the wedding preparations, or compose a song dedicated to the new couple. Or, you could offer a symbolic gift, such as a tree that they can plant and watch grow over the years.

Whatever the gift, be sure to include a card with your name and return address; that makes things easier for the couple when the time comes to send out thank-you notes.

The perfect giftfor the couple

It’s hard to go wrong with a gift of cash; the bride and groom will be able to

buy exactly what they need.

Most popularmonths for weddings

Every year millions of people walk down the aisle and begin the start of their new lives together as couples. December is one of the more popular months in which to get engaged, but other months of the year are more popular for weddings.

The decision on when to get married depends on a host of factors. Some couples choose the date based on availability with a church or reception hall, while others might prefer to walk down the aisle during a specifi c season. Some couples choose to coordinate their wedding with a special event, such as a birthday or another day of note.

Most couples decide on a wedding month primarily for the weather. That’s why the spring and summer are the most popular times of the year in which to tie the knot. Here is a list of the most popular months to tie the knot.

Less popular months for weddings may be easier to book in terms of availability, and certain vendors may discount items because of a slower season. Having a wedding during this time can be advantageous if money is tight.

#1 JUNE #2 AUGUST #3 MAY #4 JULY #5 SEPTEMBER #6 OCTOBER #7 DECEMBER #8 NOVEMBER #9 APRIL #10 FEBRUARY #11 MARCH #12 JANUARY

Wedding receptionmeal choices

A wedding reception is often a feast for guests. Be it a buffet-style cocktail hour or a three-course dinner, the food and fun seem to fl ow all night long. Some catering halls require notice of what guests will be eating prior to the wedding day so that food can be ordered and arranged. Others have a few set options that guests can choose from the night of the party.

Couples fretting over how to keep tally of guests’ menu selections may want to add a dinner choice line to their wedding reception response card. Although some etiquette experts frown at this approach, it is one of the easiest ways to count selections and report back to a catering hall. Chances are some guests have already seen this type of checklist on a response card, so there’s no need to add instructions.

Due to the varied palates of people, it pays to have two or more options from which guests can choose. Generally a beef dish, a poultry choice and a fi sh selection are offered. Inquire with the catering director as how to best handle special dietary restrictions, such as serving a vegetarian or someone who is diabetic or is limiting salt intake. There may be accommodations made for guests with certain needs.

Dedicated to Excellence

If wedding bells will soon be ringing for you and your beloved, here are a few practical makeup tips to help you look radiant on your big day.

If you have the means, entrust your makeup to a make-up artist that you know and trust. If you don’t know one, ask around for recommendations. Make an appointment several weeks before the wedding for a trial makeup session. You will be able to try a couple of looks, such as natural, glamorous, or dramatic, and the make-up artist will better know which kinds of products will suit you best on the big day.

If you’re good at doing your own makeup and prefer to do it yourself, don’t forget that you should still do a practice run before the big event. Keep in mind that your makeup for the wedding day is likely going to be different from what you wear to the offi ce. Above all, you’ll want to make sure you choose products that will help you look fresh all day long.

For your wedding day makeup, prepare your skin by applying a good moisturizer and then the makeup base. That will allow it to last longer and will also give

it a better fi nish. Choose a good quality foundation that is not orangey and that blends perfectly with the colour of your skin.

Opt for waterproof mascara. It will be useful if your dad’s speech brings tears to your eyes! And for a seductive pout that lasts all evening, choose a long-lasting lipstick and touch it up throughout the day with a quick swipe of lip gloss.

A fi nal touch: a few sprays of makeup fi xative to keep you from looking wilted and smudged as you meet and greet all day. The setting spray holds foundation and eye makeup in place while erasing any powdery effect.

Radiant makeup for your special day

For perfect makeup, treat yourself to a session

with a make-up artist.

Wedding processional alternativesNot every bride-to-be has visions of walking down the aisle to Wagner’s “Bridal Chorus.” Some prefer other songs that are romantic or dramatic. There may be a particular song dear to a bride’s heart or one she just fell in love with. For those looking for something that more accurately refl ects the tone of individual weddings, here are some selections that can make the wedding even more special.Traditional1. “Air” (Handel)2. “Canon in D” (Pachelbel)3. “Procession of Joy” (Hopson)4. “Te Deum” (Charpentier)5. “Wedding March” (Mozart)6. “Canzon V” (Gabrieli)7. “Romeo & Juliet Love Theme” (Tchaikovsky)8. “Winter” (Vivaldi)

Contemporary1. “Sunrise, Sunset” (Hamick & Bock)2. “The Look of Love” (Burt Bacharach)3. “The Vow” (Lubbock)4. “Wedding Processional” (Rodgers & Hammerstein)

Here are some other contemporary songs that can be used with lyrics or in instrumental versions as wedding processionals or fi rst dances.1. “Take Me As I Am” (Love Theme from “Jekyll & Hyde”)2. “Marry Me” (Train)3. “Just the Way You Are (Bruno Mars)4. “That’s All I Ask of You” (Love Theme from “Phantom of the Opera”)5. “The Wind Beneath My Wings” (Bette Midler)6. “Con Te Partiro” (Andrea Bocelli)7. “My Heart Will Go On” (Love Theme from “Titanic”)8. “You Raise Me Up” (Josh Groban)

The Perfect Cake

Consider black stitching in the appliques of a gown for some drama. Many gowns

come with colorful accents or they can be added later by a talented seamstress.

Colorful accentschic for this year’s bridal gowns

Almost as long as there have been bridal gowns, white or ivory have been the colors of choice for fi rst-time brides. These light hues represent the purity and innocence of the bride. Although a few brides-to-be choose to forego wedding white for something a bit more fl ashy — like pink or yellow gowns — a popular trend today is to wear gowns with accents of black or other deep colors to add dimension to the white canvas.

Considering the groom and groomsmen will be dressed in black tuxedos, black accents on a wedding gown have been growing in popularity and add a formal, regal look to a wedding. Darker color embellishments can add drama to a gown. Another advantage is they can call out pattern or adornments not easily seen on a white-on-white gown. Furthermore, deep colors against the white backdrop of the gown show well in photography, particularly the black-and-white journalistic style that is very trendy as well.

Women shopping for bridal gowns who are considering colored accents should be careful that these embellishments are subtle and do not overwhelm the gown — or the person who will be wearing it! Popular enhancements include appliques on the bodice or the train of the gown. Another idea is to select a white gown and then tie a black bow or sash around the waist or put a lace shrug over bare shoulders. Black-and-white lace gloves are also an option for those who want to add just a little splash of dimension.

The same concept can be applied to any accent color. Burgundy or plum colors also work well to add the contrast of dark against light and aren’t as extreme as black. Some brides can also opt for a paler, more pastel shade to serve as an accompaniment to the white gown. Many times the accent colors chosen are replicated in the hue of the bridesmaids’ gowns, so the entire wedding party looks cohesive.

Because the spectacle will be the beauty of the gown, it’s best to carry a neutral-colored bouquet in a small size. Or, a black-and-white gown can be accented with a small nosegay of red fl owers or roses.
