American Arts Envoy Nicole Taylor Performs in Jerusalem to Celebrate African American History Month

On February 12, the U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem hosted American Soprano Nicole Taylor and her pianist, Daniel Ernst for musical workshops and live performances to mark African American History Month. Ms. Taylor is a world-class soprano, whose award-winning vocal repertoire includes opera, chamber, oratorio and other classical offerings. During her two day visit, Taylor performed pieces by Strauss and Rachmaninov, and captivated the audience by her soulful renditions of African American spirituals. Paying respect to African American History Month, Ms. Taylor offered a heartfelt history of this American musical tradition and explained its fundamental connection to today’s popular musical genres.

In Jerusalem, Ms. Taylor conducted a workshop with the Magnificat Institute’s Yasmeen Children’s Choir in Jerusalem. The choir joined Ms. Taylor and Mr. Ernst for a public performance at Custodia Terrae Sanctae in Jerusalem’s Old City.

Ms. Taylor and Mr. Ernst also visited Dar El Kalimeh Arts College in Bethlehem for a vocal training session with past participants of the U.S. Consulate-sponsored singing competition Ghaneeha.

The soprano and pianist duo concluded their visit with a special evening performance at the residence of American Consul General Daniel Rubinstein, who welcomed guests with words from President Obama’s recent Proclamation of African American History Month.

President Obama’s Remarks at Groundbreaking Ceremony for National Museum of African American History

President Obama: “The idea for a museum dedicated to African Americans was first put forward by black veterans of the Civil War. And years later, the call was picked up by members of the civil rights generation — by men and women who knew how to fight for what was right and strive for what is just. This is their day. This is your day. It’s an honor to be here to see the fruit of your labor.

It was here that the pillars of our democracy were built, often by black hands. And it is on this spot — alongside the monuments to those who gave birth to this nation, and those who worked so hard to perfect it — that generations will remember the sometimes difficult, often inspirational, but always central role that African Americans have played in the life of our country.”

State Department Fact Sheet on SportsUnited: Bringing People Together

The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs’ SportsUnited Division leads the U.S. Department of State’s international exchange efforts to bring the global community together through sports.

Using lessons learned on and off the playing field, SportsUnited focuses on empowering young people and underserved populations worldwide. Sports diplomacy builds on Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s vision of “smart power diplomacy,” which embraces the use of a full range of diplomatic tools – in this case sports – to bring people together and foster greater understanding.

SportsUnited engages people from around the world in four key ways: the Empowering Women and Girls Through Sports Initiative, the Sports Envoy program, the Sports Visitors program, and Sports Grants that focus on empowering athletes with disabilities and underserved youth.

The Empowering Women and Girls Through Sports Initiative

In February 2012, the U.S. Department of State announced a global effort to engage women and girls through sports. The Empowering Women and Girls Through Sports Initiative will mobilize all of the U.S. Department of State’s international sports programming, from Sports Envoys traveling overseas to international Sports Visitors traveling to the United States, to increase the number of women and girls worldwide who are involved in sports. A cornerstone of this initiative is the creation of a new sports mentorship program that will connect women and girls from across the globe with their American counterparts.

For more information on the Empowering Women and Girls Through Sports Initiative, please log on to the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs’ website at https://exchanges.state.gov/sports.
