I Love to Read Week Can you remember an exciting book you read as a child, or maybe a favorite story that was read to you? Getting young learners excited about reading is an important part of what we do in school every day. Being a l i fe long reader is important for becoming a well-rounded person. Enjoying and comprehending different types of books helps increase knowledge base and i s an avenue to increasing learning. This is why we must celebrate! Our theme this year was “Hats O f f t o R e a d i n g ” a n d w e commemorated each day with a

new guest reader or activity to promote literacy. The students were also encouraged to wear a hat to celebrate each day. We celebrated Reading Around the World on Monday by wearing multi cultural hats and enjoying guest reader Yuhan Huang, a student who transferred from China. She read a book in her native language and demonstrated her beautiful penmanship and writing to the students. For Career Hat Day we enjoyed the books that were shared by Firefighter Rob Brown and RCMP Officers Karen Paulsen a n d M i k e R o m e i r o . O n Wednesday we celebrated our love

of reading with sports books that were read by Grade 12 athletes Elise Badiou and Garett Moore. We celebrated winter on Thursday by wearing our winter hats all day and having a special hot dog roast at lunchtime. Our last day, Friday, was Wacky Hat Day and our annual Used Book Exchange. The week also brought cross- grade buddy reading, cross-grade teacher guest readers, making origami newspaper hats and our daily dose of DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) time. We had a week of reading fun and it was a fantastic literacy event!

Library Reading Tree At the beginning of ‘I Love To Read’ week we had a very bare tree on the Elementary door. This tree slowly filled up with leaves as the week went on. Many lovely books left the library to be read by eager students and all who signed out a book were entered in a draw. The tree is now bare again and the winners are as follows: Justice Fick Kindergarten Meghan Harris Grade 1 Nathan Fiander Grade 2 Keagan Shearer Grade 3 Elliot Belfour Grade 4 Wyatt Taylor Grade 5 Cassie Hamilton Grade 6
