Lesson of Forgiveness

Forgiveness, or rather for-give-ness, is the quality of giving to or forsomething or someone. It is the stage of giving rather than holding. It is the stage of forgetting and not holding grudges or resentmenttowards someone. It is not to bear hatred and resentment towards

others in our hearts.

Believe it or not, we will enter into our Lenten Journey in a few moredays beginning with Ash Wednesday on February 26. As it’sdescribed in the Ordo 2020, the first three and a half weeksbeginning with Ash Wednesday the chosen Gospel readings forMass are taken from the Synoptics (the gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke) to deliver the message of a life of Gospel Conversion .

For the second half of Lent the Church chooses the Gospel readingfrom the Gospel of Christ to present Christ as the Son of God, thehealer and life-giver. These two messages for the whole LentenSeason-a life of Gospel Conversion and the Gospel of Christ-beginwith the sign of the cross on our forehead on Ash Wednesday toremind us, “Remember, you are dust, and from dust you shallreturn.”

Those Ashes placed on our forehead in the form of a cross are notfor decoration or publicizing but to remind us of the quality of givingof the One, the Son of God and God himself, innocently crucified forthe sake of the salvation of humankind. The on that vertical line ofthe cross traced on our forehead is to remind us to reconcile withGod and the horizontal line of the cross reminds us to reconcile withone another and within ourselves.

The question is: How can we reconcile with God and with oneanother and within ourselves if we have not learned to forgive? Howcan we forgive if we haven’t learned to forget, to let go of the hurts, the pains that others inflicted on us either consciously orunconsciously?

There will be a Day of Reflection for all ministry membershere at St. Paul’s on Saturday, February 29th . We will begin

with Mass at 8:00 AM in the Church then go to the ParishHall. It will end at Noon with Benediction in the Church.

Let the children come unto me, and do not hinder them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these . Mark 10:14,16

On Family Prayer Life

Pope Francis has mentioned to families over the years, that theyshould take time to rest and to pray together and to be examples ofHoliness. For our children to be an example of holiness, they mustthink and act like Jesus. Jesus always took the time to pray to hisFather. You can do this with your family. Even at a very young age,a child will understand why you pray together at meals, before bed,on Sunday afternoons, or when there is a family problem. Whenyou make prayer a daily occurrence in your family, you are buildingup a lifelong habit.

In Religious Education, your children interact with others who sharethe same belief system. They may not all follow the faith, as yourfamily does, but they join in common prayer in their classrooms andatria. There will always be an intermingling of prayer habits in yourfamily and that which their catechist teaches. The result can only beone that benefits all of our children, as they observe others in theirclass share prayers.

In the family we learn how to love, to forgive, to be generous andopen, not closed and selfish. Your children will encounter in ourclasses other children who may not have the same family life astheirs. Your children may have already learned to move beyondtheir own needs, to encounter others and share their lives withthem. That is why it is so important to pray as a family. That is whyfamilies who pray participate in God’s plan for the Church!Deacon Frank

Treasures from Our Tradition

Until very recent decades “Holy Thursday” and “Good Friday” werecentered on personal pious devotions, not public liturgy. In urbanAmerica, at least in cities with a significant Catholic population, HolyThursday was about veneration of the Blessed Sacrament. Peoplewere encouraged to walk to seven churches for a “visit” to eachparish’s repository, a kind of temporary tabernacle on a side altar, closer in proximity to the faithful than the usual tabernacle on thedistant high altar. On Good Friday, the most popular form ofdevotion was the Stations of the Cross, or a three-hour program ofword and preaching beginning at noon.

The Holy Thursday seven-church hike was a way of participating ina custom of the city of Rome. Traditionally, each day in Lent wasassigned to a particular parish church or basilica in the city. Eachweek of Lent thus had seven churches, and pious people tried to getto each one of them. The pilgrimage was a symbol of unity and alsothe journey of faith. Originally, the pope would go to each place for a

liturgy, but political strife removed the pope from Rome in 1305.With the papacy relocated in France, the custom ceased until PopeLeo XIII expressed interest in restoring it in 1900, and Blessed JohnXXIII fully restored the custom in 1959. By the time Pope Leo beganto revive the custom, many American cities had enough parishesand monasteries that the faithful could vicariously participate in therevived tradition of stational liturgies by a very long walk! - Rev. James Field,

Foolishness

Sometimes the idea of repentance seems old-fashioned, naïve, oreven foolish. But if you’re looking for real foolishness, you’ll find it intoday’s readings.

We begin with Leviticus and the admonition, “Take no revenge andcherish no grudge” (Leviticus 19:18). We’ve heard that messagebefore, of course, so we might forget how far it is from the so-called“practical realities of life.” Saint Paul warns us about being practical, though. Whoever considers oneself wise had better “become a fool,”because “the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the eyes ofGod”.

This “foolishness” continues in the Gospel: “Offer no resistance toone who is evil” (Matthew 5:39). In fact, offer the other cheek whenyou’ve been slapped. Hand over your coat as well as your shirt. Belike God, who sends sunshine and rain on the bad as well as thegood. “So be perfect,” says Jesus, “just as your heavenly Father isperfect” (5:48).

Reflecting on God’s Word

A 2006 movie called Love Actually has one of the best openings inrecent years. It begins with two young people running toward eachother and falling into each other’s arms, kissing joyfully. Then yousee a mother being hugged by her two little girls, then two olderwomen, perhaps sisters, embracing. As these scenes give way toothers, you become aware that all this takes place in an airport atthe arrivals gate. Accompanying these images is a voiceover.

Whenever he feels down about the condition of the world, thespeaker goes to the arrivals gate at Heathrow airport in London.Despite the fact that there is so much hatred and greed in the world,he says, Heathrow is one place where things seem different. AtHeathrow love is everywhere.

All the while you hear this voice, you are watching people rush intoeach other’s arms. For a full minute you see the world as awelcoming, warm, loving place. You know it’s something of a set-upbecause who goes to meet people at airports other than family, good friends, people in a loving relationship? But isn’t this God’splan for the world, what God wants most from us: love God; loveone another.

The voiceover concludes by noting that right before the planes hitthe Twin Towers in New York City, all the calls that went out weremessages of love. People chose to have their final words beprofessions of love. Making that choice on a daily basis is whatmakes us perfect—that is, full-grown, complete, holy. . .—James A. Wallace,

Living God’s Word

We pray to God to continue to pour the Holy Spirit into our hearts sothat we can love with God’s own love, when our own ability to lovefails us. We pray that we can grow into that full maturity that we seein Jesus, who prayed for his enemies from the cross. Copyright © 2013, World Library
