A Note from the PastorMy aunt Gert was a hot sketch. She never forgave my nana for naming her “Gertrude” but learned to a live with “Gert” into her 60s. Then my sister started calling her “Trudy” which Gert thought was a hip name. Only her husband and my mom got away with hanging on to “Gert.” And when my mom, who was older, got fed up with Gert/Trudy, she’d bark at her using the hated, “Gertrude!” Trudy was my godmother and tickled pink when I entered the seminary. Until one day, showing off my new-found biblical knowledge, I pontificated that “Adam and Eve” was a myth, a story aimed to tell a truth, but a story nonetheless. I was forever after “suspect.” And worse, I’d made Trudy suspicious of everything else she’d been taught in church along the way. If there was no apple, well, who knows? All of which reminds me of Lent. The Lent of my youth was a harrowing 40-days of “giving up.” In addition to losing an afternoon a week to “Sunday school,” we lost another afternoon to “Stations” (of the Cross). Abstinence from beer and butts, and desserts and candy were sacraments attesting to the “sin of the world.” We “gave up” these goodies to muscle ourselves up for avoiding sins (not “sin”). Once when Trudy was making a parish mission and the preacher called on everyone to see Lent as a time of “growing up” rather than “giving up,” she bailed. Having been eligible for Confirmation in grade 6, she believed she was grown up and had all she needed to know about religion and earning heaven. Heaven was a reward and you earned it by holding fast to the precepts of the Church. As a terminal fan of the afternoon “soaps,” you didn’t have a relationship with God; you obeyed God. Evidently, sixth graders never got to John’s gospel. Whatever name Gert/Trudy used to ID herself at heaven’s gate, I’m sure she was welcomed. Even heaven needs its characters. But I’d like to think that she’s finally come to terms with God as a love that only gets better even in eternity, and that she now agrees that, not only Lent, but all of life is certainly a matter of what you do. But more so a matter of who you are. So, taming our actions is a good thing. But if the taming is to have a shelf life of more than 40 days, it requires becoming someone newer and better, day by day. Lent is our yearly reminder of such a life. Beginning Lent 2020 this week, we might make the best of both “giving up” and “growing up.” Giving up values and attitudes that keep us small, poor, and unlovely, and growing up into the patient, compassionate, and loving people that, deep down within ourselves, we know we want to be.

Palm Sunday Musical Jamie Dean • [email protected] Youth Choir will present their Palm Sunday Musical, The Tale of the Three Trees, at 3:30 PM on Sunday afternoon, April 5. Please mark your calendar now so you won’t miss this moving rendition of an American folk tale about our dreams and God’s plans for those dreams.

Our Parish Tithing Bob Fennell • [email protected] idea of giving a tithe – a portion of one’s wealth – to God appears very early in the Old Testament. Israelites who had property were expected to give a portion of their harvest or flocks as an offering. These offerings were sometimes ritually burned, sometimes given to the priests who maintained the house of God and guided its rituals. The priests themselves were expected to donate a portion of what they were given: “When you receive from the Israelites the tithes…. you are to make a contribution from them to the Lord, a tithe of the tithes.” (Num 18:26) Each year, as we build our annual parish budget, we set aside an amount equal to 5% of the previous year’s total offertory to support organizations serving our neighbors at home and abroad who are in need of food, shelter, medical care, education, and advocacy for their human rights. (For information about how our recipients are selected and other details, please see the parish website. Note that any parishioner is welcome to suggest a worthy organization.) As funds are disbursed throughout the year, we call attention weekly to one of our charities. Our tithing is our recognition that everything we have is a gift from God, and our gratitude is expressed not only in prayers of thanks but also in caring for the needs of others.

150 Dozen Homemade Cookies Deacon John • [email protected] MINISTRY KAIROS WALK • PERRY CORRECTIONAL, PELZER, SCYes, that’s not a typo – They have increased the number of cookies and Deacon John is seeking 30 volunteers to each bake 5 dozen homemade cookies to be taken to Perry Correctional Institution for the upcoming Kairos Walk. If you can help, please contact Deacon John with the number of cookies you can donate. Our packing instructions have also been revised – no plastic bags or foil allowed. For recipes and detailed packing instructions, go to http://bit.ly/cookie-info-recipes. Freeze all cookies if not using within 3 days. Please deliver to the church office by noon, on Wednesday, March 11. The types of cookies generally acceptable are oatmeal, peanut butter, molasses, chocolate chip, ginger, and sugar. Cookies should be between 2 and 2½ inches in diameter and not more than 1/2 inch thick. It is very important not to use icing, sugar, or any other type of coating on the outside of the cookie. Do not add any fruit, raisins, or nuts to the cookies. Pack in wax paper-lined boxes. Key ingredient: prayer – Pray over the ingredients before and during mixing. Pray over the cookies as you drop them onto the cookie sheets and bake them. Ask God to use your cookies as a source of His love to shine on the residents and correctional officers throughout the Kairos weekend.

Cancer Survivor Celebration and Luminaria WalkOn Friday, March 6, following 5:15 PM Mass, (being offered for the intentions

of all those named on the RFL luminaries) join Saints-A-Walking RFL team, and other teams from our local Relay, at First Baptist Church (no stairs to access) for an Evening of Hope to celebrate our community’s cancer survivors. The featured speaker will be parishioner, Kathy Becker, and the evening will close with a luminaria walk in the Saint Andrew courtyard. All are invited, but especially if you are a cancer survivor, please come out to this birthday-themed event. Our annual cookies and luminary fundraiser will be after Masses NEXT weekend. While parishioner support has always been tremendous and we light hundreds of luminiaria in honor or in memory of our loved ones, very few ever get to see them lit. This is your chance. For more information and to RSVP, go to www.eveningofhopeclemson.eventbrite.com or call Nancy in the Parish Office at 864-654-1757.
