PSA 2014 Coming Soon Last week we began our Pastoral Services Appeal (PSA) efforts here at St. Norbert which focused on the many ways we are Sent to Serve others and our parish, through the ministries of Catholic Charities. This week we will show a DVD from our diocese which highlights the wonderful things we do as a
community, for which we can be proud, and the amazing impact that we have within Orange County. You might even notice our very own Deacon Will Golding!
Our pledge weekend will be March 1 and 2. Funds raised in excess of our $150,000 diocesan obligation will be used to pay down the loan on our Family & Youth Center, due within the next 3 years. Currently we owe $608,327 so we are not far from paying off that debt. Each family will be receiving more information about our PSA program this year, along with their pledge envelope, in the mail in the coming week or so. We hope you prayerfully consider your pledge. __________________________________________________________________________________________________

It is a time to meet with others in quiet and peace away from the busyness and noise of the world. We gather in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel at 7:30 p.m. Please feel free to join us—you are most welcome! __________________________________________________________________________________________________
Weekly Parish Offering Thank you for your continuing support of St. Norbert Parish. For the fiscal year July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014, our parish budget calls for $27,900 to be donated weekly at the Sunday collection. The collection for Sunday, February 16, was $24,292.79. The collection is not only for operating expenses each week, but also for any ongoing repair work, upgrades, etc. to our parish facility. Your regular donations are needed for the good of St. Norbert Parish and the spread of the Gospel.
Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Leviticus 19:1‐2, 17‐18
Love is Hard Love and hate are not the only options. In between lies a range of emotions including concern and indifference. If someone offends us, we may respond in a variety of ways. Some people feel hatred, bear grudges, and seek revenge. It is a fairly easy choice. But others take the harder option.
The Book of Leviticus proposes this difficult solution. God said to Moses, “You shall not bear hatred for your brother or sister in your heart. … Take no revenge and cherish no grudge against any of your people. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
This command is one of the most challenging in the entire Old Testament, yet Jesus chose it as one of the greatest commandments: Love your neighbor.
The Book of Leviticus realizes that not every neighbor is lovable. “You may have to reprove your fellow citizen.” People sometimes do the wrong thing. They should not continue such behavior. You may have the opportunity to offer correction. But correction is not a license for anger, or for the disruption of charity. When correcting your neighbor, Leviticus says, “do not incur sin.” Be not hateful. Be loving.
It is easy to love the neighbor we like, but it is harder to love the neighbor who offends. That love can take many forms—even the form of charitable correction. But it should never deteriorate to hatred. There are other options.

Special Collection for the Church in Latin America & Eastern Europe This weekend, we will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin America and Eastern Europe. Many unique challenges face the Church in those regions. A lack of priests and trained lay ministers, high emigration rates, and the alarming pace at which parishioners are leaving the faith make it difficult for the region’s Church to provide for the faithful. It is more important than ever that we keep faith with the Church in Latin America and Eastern Europe. Please give generously to this special collection. ________________________________________________________________________

In the fall we are changing our faith formation to Liturgical Catechesis. Your children will be learning the coming Sunday’s Gospel message and readings for the week. Children anticipating First Reconciliation and First Communion will also be prepared for these sacraments.
The Sunday Gospel message creates the foundation for children to become more involved in Sunday worship as they see how the readings tie to their own lives. Jesus becomes immediate and real, saints’ lives demonstrate the power of faith, and stories relate God’s word to children’s worlds. Because the program is based on the Sunday assembly, it encourages families to attend Mass every week and hear the message together as a family.
Please don’t hesitate to call or make an appointment to speak to Robin Mayes, DRE, directly at (714) 998‐1070. Registration will begin in May.
Good Luck Team! Please keep the SNCS Academic Decathlon team in your prayers as they compete next Saturday at the Diocese of Orange Junior High Academic Decathlon at Santa Margarita
Catholic High School. This competition requires team and individual efforts, with students competing in logic, Roman Catholic doctrine, English, literature, science, mathematics, current events, social studies, fine arts, and a super quiz with multiple choice questions on five broad academic themes. Good luck SNCS coaches and decathletes! _______________________________________________________________________
The Future of Catholic Education While St. Norbert Catholic School is proud to have nurtured the faith and academic growth of our students for over 45 years, we are also determined to ensure the long‐term financial stability of our school.
To this end, we have established the St. Norbert Catholic School Endowment Fund at the Orange Catholic Foundation, an independent charitable corporation dedicated to raising funds and providing fundraising resources for Diocese of Orange parishes, schools and ministries. The SNCS Endowment Fund is a perpetual fund that is predictable, reliable and prudent over time, providing a source of continuous support for our parish school outlined in a restricted gift agreement. Donors provide long‐term financial commitment to purposes within the Church in a thoughtful, faith‐filled manner that is consistent with responsible Christian stewardship.
Our mission at SNCS is to promote academic excellence, nurture faith and inspire action based on the person and message of Jesus. With your support, we will continue this mission and secure the future of Catholic education. For more information on our school endowment fund, or to make a contribution of cash, stocks or property, please contact SNCS Development Director, Patty Bornhop at (714) 637‐6822 x204 or [email protected]

Wondering Why Sometimes people approach the scriptures as though every verse carries the same weight of authority. This can become confusing when we encounter apparent contradictions in the scriptures. In fact, our scriptures are part of a long process of revelation which begins with God’s call to Abraham and is fulfilled in Christ. Over those two thousand years, the understanding of God and the knowledge of right living developed from primitive laws intended to protect and preserve the tribe to the universal call to love all peoples from the heart and lips of Jesus.
This Sunday’s Gospel passage is a continuation of the antitheses that began the previous week. As in the earlier ones, Jesus recounts a scriptural law with which the Jews would have been familiar and reinterprets it to a fuller meaning. These verses deal

with a difficult issue, what to do about people who have caused harm, perhaps serious harm, to another or to a community.
In the first of these, Jesus reminds the people of the law found in Leviticus “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.” This law of equitable justice, was developed in the ancient world for the purpose of restricting retaliation, rather than giving permission for seeking revenge. In that society, if someone stole a chicken, the family who suffered the theft might retaliate by killing one or more members of the thief’s family. This law restricted the level of retaliation to the degree of harm done, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a chicken for a chicken—not a person for a chicken. One cannot demand back more than what was taken from them. It was a big step forward in the justice system of that time. Jesus tells the people though that a higher law should rule their hearts, the rule of love. He calls people to forgive and to give the offender another chance.
In the same spirit, Jesus reminds people of the principle they had learned of loving the neighbor, but hating the enemy. The Jews knew that they had a responsibility to one another. To them, the neighbor did not mean the person living next door, but rather any person of the heritage of the twelve tribes. They understood that they had an obligation to keep their national allegiance strong by supporting one another in the Jewish community. But, they believed that their obligation ended there as well. Jesus calls them further. Not only must they love people like themselves, but they must give the same level of concern to outsiders, the enemy. This was radical thinking in a tribal society. Jesus even goes so far as to instruct the people to pray for those who are persecuting them, which in that day, meant the oppressive Romans. Not an easy thing to do.
Jesus points out to those listening that even pagans and sinners love those who love them back, and give greetings to their kinsmen. Doing that alone does not make one any different from someone who does not know God. Jesus’ followers are called to a greater way of living. He wants his disciples to offer the same compassion and care to strangers and even enemies that they would to their family members.
That, also, is not an easy thing to do, and it is something that takes practice. But, the good news is, that if we try to practice that kind of loving action, Jesus is right there to help us. We can begin with prayer. If someone has done something that has offended us, even harmed us, instead of dwelling on that harm and repeating the event over and over in our heads, reliving it again and again, we can instead choose to pray for that person. If someone is indeed causing harm, that certainly is someone in need of prayer. And, we may find the results are two‐fold. The person prayed for may accept the grace to repent, and we ourselves may experience the grace of finding peace and letting go.

_______________________________________________________________________

Looking for Excitement? How many times have you thought about Cursillo and never made the call to go on the weekend? There is a lot of excitement that happens on the Cursillo weekend. You become immersed in prayer and meditation. There are changes that occur within yourself and you wonder why you did not do Cursillo sooner. When the weekend is over you cannot wait to tell others about your weekend experience and get others to attend. Ask anyone who has attended a Cursillo weekend and find out why they are excited. Contact Ron Accornero at (714) 396‐7295 or by e‐mail at [email protected] to find out about Cursillo and to get an application.

Birth Choice Volunteer Training Birth Choice Health Clinics is looking for men and women willing to volunteer their time and energy in our clinics. We are a non‐profit, pro‐life organization on the front lines of the right‐to‐life movement reaching out to young women and men facing unplanned pregnancies and decisions regarding their sexual health.
We are looking for volunteers to work with our patients, run our parenting classes and serve as male mentors for our "Dad's Project" program. As a licensed community care clinic, we need registered nurses, nurse practitioners, RDMS‐certified sonographers and medical doctors willing to donate their time and skills to provide services for our patients. We also have a mobile unit and are looking for volunteers to travel throughout Orange County as we bring our services to the streets. Volunteer Drivers with a class “C” license are needed for our mobile unit.
The volunteer training will be Saturday, March 8, for non‐medical volunteers, and Saturday, March 8, and Saturday, March 15, for medical volunteers. The training will be held at Calvary Church in Santa Ana in the worship center room WC209 on the second floor. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Keith Cotton at (714) 267‐2111or [email protected] ______________________________________________________________________
