OP/ED: Dear Mom and Dad: Cool it

By Karissa Niehoff, Executive Director of the National Federation of State High School Associations and Matt Fetsch, Executive Director of the North Dakota High School Activities Association.

If you are the mother or father of a high school athlete here in North Dakota, this message is primarily for you.

When you attend an athletic event that involves your son or daughter, cheer to your heart’s content, enjoy the camaraderie that high school sports offer and have fun. But when it comes to verbally criticizing game officials or coaches, cool it.

Make no mistake about it. Your passion is admired, and your support of the hometown team is needed. But so is your self-control. Yelling, screaming and berating the officials humiliates your child, annoys those sitting around you, embarrasses your child’s school and is the primary reason North Dakota has an alarming shortage of high school officials.

It’s true. According to a recent survey by the National Association of Sports Officials, more than 75 percent of all high school officials say “adult behavior” is the primary reason they quit. And 80 percent of all young officials hang up their stripes after just two years of whistle blowing. Why? They don’t need your abuse.

Plus, there’s a ripple effect. There are more officials over 60 than under 30 in many areas. And as older, experienced officials retire, there aren’t enough younger ones to replace them. If there are no officials, there are no games. The shortage of licensed high school officials is severe enough in some areas that athletic events are being postponed or cancelled—especially at the freshman and junior varsity levels.

Research confirms that participation in high school sports and activities instills a sense of pride in school and community, teaches lifelong lessons like the value of teamwork and self-discipline and facilitates the physical and emotional development of those who participate. So, if the games

go away because there aren’t enough men and women to officiate them, the loss will be infinitely greater than just an “L” on the scoreboard. It will be putting a dent in your community’s future.

If you would like to be a part of the solution to the shortage of high school officials, you can sign up to become a licensed official at ndhsaa.com. Otherwise, adult role models at high school athletic events here in North Dakota are always welcome.

NDHSAA’s Sue Carlsrud to receive NFHS Citation Award

VALLEY CITY, N.D. – Sue Carlsrud, an Administrative Assistant at the North Dakota High School Activities Association, is among 12 individuals selected to receive National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Citations.

An award designed to honor individuals who have made contributions to the NFHS, state high school associations, athletic director and coaching professions, the officiating avocation and fine arts/performing arts programs, the NFHS Citation is one of the most highly regarded achievements in high school athletics and performing arts. The 2019 NFHS Citation recipients will receive their awards July 1 at the 100th annual NFHS Summer Meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Carlsrud began working at the NDHSAA on June 6, 1976. Her first duties at the NDHSAA were in the association’s Accident Benefit Department processing insurance claims submitted by member schools.

Her duties at the NDHSAA gradually changed shifting to an administrative assistant role in the office plus additional responsibilities working with swimming and diving as well as track and field. Before the days of Microsoft Excel Spreadsheets and HyTek Meet Manager Software programs, Carlsrud was tasked with organizing state meet qualifiers for swimming and diving as well as track and field. To this day, Carlsrud’s “behind the scenes” work in both sports continues to make state meets run smoothly. The same can be said for Carlsrud’s work within the NDHSAA office.

Carlsrud compiles and edits the NDHSAA Yearbook. She also tracks membership dues and participation fees for the NDHSAA. Her standout contributions to North Dakota high school activities were recognized in 2001 when she received the NDHSAA Distinguished Service Award.

Carlsrud’s tenure at the NDHSAA has spanned five Executive Directors (Frank Smith, Bruce Anderson, Bob King, Sherm Sylling and current Executive Director Matt Fetsch).

Outside of her work at the NDHSAA, Carlsrud is an active member of the Valley City Optimist Club and belongs to Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Valley City. She is married to Dave Carlsrud, a former Assistant Director at the NDHSAA.

Carlsrud’s 43-year career at the NDHSAA will come to a close later this year when she retires from her post. At a recent NDHSAA Board of Directors meeting, board members commended Carlsrud on her distinguished service to the NDHSAA.

Farmers Union Insurance Distinguished Student: Michael Hall

Editorial note: We will be publishing a series of articles on getting to know this year’s distinguished student finalists.

Distinguished student, Michael Hall hales from Kindred High School. His friends call him Mike. He is the son of Pam and Steve Hall and and has two brothers (Matt and Eric) and one sister (Rachel). This 18 year old has been an outstanding contributor to the NDHSAA distinguished student program. At Kindred High School, Michael participates in several activities. He excels in football, basketball, track student council, jazz band, and one act play. A myriad of activities to keep him busy most definitely. Michael states that while at school his favorite subjects are science and math. Michael also has an admiration for his sister Rachel. He states, “She works hard no matter what and always puts others before herself.”

In what little spare time he does have, Michael enjoys fishing, hunting, and watching movies. Community service is also very important as you will see Michael volunteers for the special olympics and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Michael plans on pursuing a degree in Pre-Med at either NDSU or UND. In 10 years he sees himself as a graduate of med school and working as an oncologist. Michael is obviously a young leader of today, he feels that having a servant mindset is the most important characteristic of a good leader.

Michael said that the biggest life lesson he has learned from being involved with education-based activities is “the benefit that goes hand in hand with participation and the many opportunities that come with it.”

The perfect vacation for Michael would be a trip to Europe. He also states he could not go a single day without his phone.

If elected President, his first plan of action would be to “push for compromise in healthcare legislation”.Easter is Michael’s favorite holiday because “I get to see the whole family, enjoy a delicious meal, and it usually a sign that warm weather is returning”

Individuals living or dead that Michael would like to share a meal with include: Peyton Manning Michael Jordan, Leonardo da Vinci, and Alexander the Great. Matt Damon would play Michael in a role about his life.

Michael’s biggest pet peeve is “when people cancel plans last minute.” Michael’s favorite tradition is going to the lake on the 4th of July. Congratulations to Michael Hall, a NDHSAA/ Farmers Union Insurance Distinguished Student!
