As we embark on what will be our first full year together, I thank God for my new church family and I thank you for the outpouring of love, hos- pitality, and patience you’ve extended to Brenda and me during the transition. We love our new church family and our new home and can’t imagine being anywhere but here serving alongside you. As thankful as I am for the road we’ve travelled together thus far, I’m even more thankful and excited about what God has instore for us in 2019 and beyond; both the opportunities and the challenges. That said, here’s just a few of the “big picture” opportunities and challenges in store for us the months ahead: Defining our New McKendree UMC disciple-making process: Over the next four weeks I’ll be sharing my thoughts, and asking for your input, on a disciple-making process that’s specific to the unique context of our New McKendree mission field. Although we’ll be covering the specifics from the pulpit in the weeks ahead, the bottom-line is that it’s all about “Loving God, Loving People, and Serving God’s People.” Or, as Jesus put it, to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” and to “love your neighbor as yourself.” (Mark 12:30-31) Push Pay: Our decision to invest in the Push Pay application as driven by the 21 st century reality that fewer and fewer of us carry cash or a checkbook. Why? We don’t need to. We shop online, we pay our bills online, and we do most of our banking online. Therefore, for many of us, the check we put in the offering plate is perhaps the only check we write. Although we’re not doing away with the offerto- ry portion our worship service or the time-tested offering plate technology, Push Pay provides the option to conveniently support our church using the same methods a growing number of us use to manage all our other financial transactions. Additionally, via Push Pay you have the opportunity to support your church financially even when you can’t physically attend worship. To learn more about Push Pay, check out the Push Pay inset in this newsletter, consult our church website, or call the church office. Financial Transparency: I don’t care how big or small a church family may be, finances are always a challenge. In fact, if finances ever cease to be a challenge then we’re probably doing something wrong or not pushing hard enough. Think about it…we’re finite people, with finite intellects, and finite resources trying to faithfully serve our infinite God. The more blessings God provides, financial or otherwise, the more blessings we’re called to give away for his purposes. Of course we’re perpetual- ly strapped. But having said that, it’s important that our entire church family, not just our staff and leadership, have the opportunity to understand both the blessings and the challenges regarding our church’s financial resources. After all, stewardship of our God-given resources is an integral component of the faith we profess and the discipleship we’re called to live out. Therefore, over the course of the next few months myself and our lay leadership will be offering opportunities for all members of our New McKendree family to gain a deeper understanding of our church’s financial blessings and challenges. There you have it. Those are just some of the things I’ve been praying about and planning for the first few months of the New Year. While I’m confident that myself, our staff, and our church leadership will do all in our power to make this happen, I’m even more confident of this: “that God who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:6). God has certainly begun a good work through you, his New McKendree church family, and I’m honored and grateful to continue that good work alongside you. The New Year = New Opportunities to Grow and Serve Together

God has blessed us with a New Year…a new year of receiving God’s grace and sharing God’s grace. As we embark on what will be our first full year together, I thank God for my new church family and I thank you for the outpouring of love, hos-pitality, and patience you’ve extended to Brenda and me during the transition. We love our new church family and our new home and can’t imagine being anywhere

but here serving alongside you.

As thankful as I am for the road we’ve travelled together thus far, I’m even more thankful and excited about what God has instore for us in 2019 and beyond; both the opportunities and the challenges. That said, here’s just a few of the “big picture” opportunities and challenges in store for us the months ahead:

Defining our New McKendree UMC disciple-making process: Over the next four weeks I’ll be sharing my thoughts, and asking for your input, on a disciple-making process that’s specific to the unique context of our New McKendree mission field. Although we’ll be covering the specifics from the pulpit in the weeks ahead, the bottom-line is that it’s all about “Loving God, Loving People, and Serving God’s People.” Or, as Jesus put it, to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” and to “love your neighbor as yourself.”

(Mark 12:30-31)

Financial Transparency: I don’t care how big or small a church family may be, finances are always a challenge. In fact, if finances ever cease to be a challenge then we’re probably doing something wrong or not pushing hard enough. Think about it…we’re finite people, with finite intellects, and finite resources trying to faithfully serve our infinite God. How much does Jesus love preschoolers? Well, the same as He loves you and me—A LOT! In fact, there is nothing wider or longer or higher or deeper than the love Jesus has

for you and the preschoolers in your life. This month, our goal is for preschoolers to know Jesus loves them, and that nothing will ever change that. Memory Verse: “HOW WIDE AND LONG AND HIGH AND DEEP IS THE LOVE OF CHRIST.” EPHESIANS 3:18, NIV Bottom Line: Jesus Loves Me!
