An ecumenical and interdenominational fellowship

Sponsored by the Episcopal and Lutheran Churches

Dear Family:

It is hard to believe that Lent is upon us starting

with the Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m., Feb-

ruary 14. We will offer a service with Taize mu-

sic, Biblical readings, a meditation by Roy, si-

lence and imposition of ashes.

As Lent moves on, Roy and I will offer a class on

the life of prayer of Jesus. We will use a 5-week

CD teaching program offered by Dr. Fred

Craddock on the prayer life of Jesus found in the

Gospel of Luke. We will offer it on Wednesdays

at 10:30 a.m. starting February 21. Please let

Rob know if you are planning to come, and bring

your Gospel of Luke with you when you attend.

Many of you well remember when Dr. Craddock

came to SCF. But for those of you who do not

know of him, and those who do, you may enjoy

this “Taste of His Wisdom” in the following arti-

cle in the January/February 2018 newsletter,

“Milk & Honey”, from the Craddock Center.

Enjoy and Blessed Lent,

Nancy

The Wisdom of Dr. Fred Craddock

Up near me, at Fannin County Hospital, minis-

ters around take turns being chaplain for the

week. I took my turn, and the week I was on

watch, there was a baby born. Not a lot born

in that little bitty thirty-bed hospital. But I went

there, it was about nine o’clock in the morning,

and I saw all these people gathered, looking

through the glass.

There was that little bitty new baby, and it

looked like a clan of people gathered around. I

said, “What is it, boy or girl?” “It’s a girl.”

“What’s the name?” “Elizabeth.” “Well, is the

father over here in this group?” “No.” Looked

back over there, and leaning against the wall,

was a young man. He said, “I’m the father.” I

said, “Baby’s name Elizabeth?” “Yeah.”

“Beautiful baby.” She was squirming—you

couldn’t hear through the glass—but she was

squirming, and red faced, and all like that.

I thought maybe he might be concerned, and I

said, “Now she’s not sick. It’s good for babies

to scream and do all that. It clears out their

lungs and get their voices going. It’s all right.”

He said, “Oh I know she’s not sick . But she’s

mad as hell.” And then he said, “Pardon me,

Reverend.” I said, “That’s all right. Why’s she

mad?”

He said, “ Well wouldn’t you be mad? One mi-

nute you're with God in heaven and the next

minute you’re In Georgia.” Well! I thought,

Man, I’ve got myself a real mountain Gnostic

here on my hands. This guy’s been reading

Plato. I said, “You believe she was with God

before she came here?” He said, “Oh yeah.” I

said, “You think she’ll remember?” He said, “

Well, that’s up to her mother and me. It’s up to

the church. We’ve got to see that she remem-

bers, ’cause if she forgets, she’s a goner.”

Schedule of Upcoming Services—February

ASH WEDNESDAY & LENT

The Ash Wednesday Service on February 14, 7

p.m., in the HTCC sanctuary, is an introduction and

preparation for the upcoming Lenten season. As in

the past, a Taize-type format helps to set the tone for

this important 5-week pilgrimage leading up to Holy

Week. To more fully experience our “walk with Jesus”

throughout Lent, a greater effort is being made to

focus the Sunday worship experience with expanded

readings and music up to Palm Sunday. We hope

this will enhance your weekly personal worship as

you participate.

ENDOWMENT MOMENT FOR FEBRUARY

The Vision Board of Trustees has voted to change the name of the VBT

to the Endowment Board of Trustees or EBT. From now on you will see us

use that name. Hopefully this will prevent the confusion we have had in

the past.

The Endowment Committee has been working on finalizing a Gift Ac-

ceptance Policy document which will control the acceptance of Legacy Gifts. Instead

of applying the policy to Endowment gifts we have written the policy to apply to any

legacy gifts given to Sunriver Christian Fellowship. After approval by the Management

Board, we will use this policy as the basis of our informational Cottage Meeting to be

held during 2018.

Have you looked at the Endowment Memorial Board lately? Several

new names have been added. This is a wonderful way to memorialize loved ones in

your life.

NEW CLASSES OFFERED

.THE LIFE OF PRAYER OF JESUS: Nancy & Roy Green will offer a class

on the life of prayer of Jesus based on a 5-week CD teaching program

from Dr. Fred Craddock on the prayer life of Jesus found in the Gospel of

Luke. Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. starting February 21. Please let Rob

know if you are planning to come, and bring your Gospel of Luke with you

when you attend.

EMBRACING THE PROPHETS IN CONTEMPORTY CULTURE: Postponed until

after Easter.

MANAGEMENT BOARD SECRETARY WANTED

The SCF Management Board is in need of someone to attend the monthly meet-

ing, take notes, and publish Management Board Meeting minutes. The meetings

are usually on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 2:30 p.m. and last approxi-

mately two hours. This role is a great opportunity for someone to understand the

functioning of the Management Board with a minimal monthly time commitment.

This would be a non-voting board position. Please contact Managing Board Presi-

dent, Joe Huseonica at [email protected] or 503-367-5482 if you are

available to be of service to our congregation in this role.

All Saints of the Cascades

Annual Meeting Notification

The All Saints of the Cascades annual meeting

will be held after our SCF worship services on

February 11. It should last no more than half

an hour. The agenda will include election of

the Vestry and Delegates for the 2018 Dioce-

san Convention to be held in Hood River Oct.

19th thru the 21st of this year. Please grab

your coffee and cookies and join us after the

service in the Children’s Chapel for this short

but very important meeting.

NEW SCF MEMBER

SCF welcomes Mary Ann Gard as a new

member who has only lived in Sunriver for 5

months. A long time native of Portland, Mary

Ann and her partner, Katie, are loving their new

life and are already involved in a book club, dog

walking group, cleaning Highway 97,and run-

ning and hiking our beautiful trails. Mary Ann

was raised living with her father in her grand-

mother's convalescent home which prepared

her for her future as a licensed geriatric physi-

cal therapist. Her long love of caring for older

people led her to become an ordained Episco-

pal chaplain serving a church in Vancouver,

Washington, and also serving a hospice chap-

lain at several locations. We look forward to

seeing how God will lead her in using her many

skills here in Sunriver.

A BOOK BY DAVE GRISSEN

Dave Grissen, former associate pastor of SCF, and founder

of Life Impact Ministries, has battled cancer for over the

past three years. He has written about his experience in a

book called, Cancer Eclipse: A Path of Hope Forward in Can-

cer Darkness. If you want to order this book, or want more

information, go to www.CancerEclipse.com.

CARE & SHARE FOOD BOX MINISTRY

Care & Share (C&S) is a 501(c)(3) ministry that primarily provides food assistance to needy families in

the 97707 and 97739 zip codes. Started in 2001 by Holy Trinity Catholic Church and assisted by SCF, C&S

served 11 families at its first distribution in January, 2002. It has grown to serve between 190 and 216 families

per month, serving 192 in November, 2017 (that’s 644 persons). C&S continues as Holy Trinity Church’s out-

reach mission with significant support in administration, packing boxes and distribution from SCF.

Over the years C&S has had to move its facilities from site to site: from Maverick’s to the Business Park

where The Door is now located, to the back shed of Hammertime Hardware, the location of South Bend Bistro,

next to the Book Store, to today’s location where food is distributed from a large rented space in the storage yard

next to Three Rivers School. In addition to the food boxes for needy families, C&S occasionally assists families

financially in a manner similar to SCF’s UPCAP Emergency Assistance.

Community, church, and individual financial support are vital in keeping this worthwhile activity going.

SCF, through UPCAP, provides $400/month in fresh fruit and forwards specifically designated SCF collected con-

tributions. The Christmas Bazaar contributes funds annually, and bottle recycling and the firewood project’s

earnings both go to C&S. Specific grants are also sought to help fund the expanding need. Expenses include

rent, food purchases, utilities, office and mailing expenses and school supply purchases in August. Many able

volunteers work the last week of each month from January through November to buy, pick up, sort, box and dis-

tribute food. In December the Christmas Basket program replaces C&S. There is no paid staff – all are volun-

teers.

How can you help?

1. Volunteer your time: Volunteers are needed on the last Friday of each month for shopping, sorting, bagging,

boxing, distributing food and registering clients. Other volunteers prepare postcards to the clients, maintain fi-

nancial records and Excel data bases, write reports, and do grant-writing.

2. Donate nonperishable items: Hearty soups, one-dish boxed or prepared meals, cereals, canned beans, meats,

fish, vegetables, and fruits are always needed, as well as other items such as soap, detergents, toilet paper,

toothpaste, etc. Please do not include foods that are out-of-date. Donated books (especially for children), puz-

zles, and personal care items from hotels (shampoo, lotion, etc.) are made available for the taking. Place bagged

donations in the entryway bins or on the shelves in the bathroom hallway at SCF. These are collected weekly and

put in the storage unit.

3. Help financially: Write your check to SCF and indicate it is for Care & Share. Donations are used to buy peanut

butter, bread, milk, cheese, ground beef, laundry soap or other items to supplement what is donated. It may also

be used for rent, utilities, insurance, supplies, etc.

Care & Share provides an opportunity to put names and faces to the data about hunger in America and

specifically in South Deschutes County. Know that your efforts mirror the heart of what Christian giving and help-

ing your fellow citizens truly means. Thank you for your generosity and thinking of Care & Share. If you would like

more information or want to volunteer, contact Sandy Young at 541-848-9920 or [email protected].
