SCHOOL OF CHOICE School of Choice allows parents and students the ability to choose a school to attend other than the one identified as serving the student’s current residential area.

There are certain responsibilities and obligations that the parents and students must meet when exercising School of Choice. Some considerations are: program suitability, space availability, application dates, and transportation.

To read the complete School of Choice pamphlet please visit: https://www.bsd.ca/Studentsparents/AdmissionsRegistration/schoolofchoice/Pages/default.aspx

The deadline for application for 2018—2019 is May 15, 2018

Within Division School of Choice forms are only necessary to complete once. Out of Division School of Choice forms are valid from Gr. 1—Gr. 8 and must be submitted again for high school.

“Senior Administration is directed to decline School of Choice Requests for schools that are at or above 90% of either Capacity or Classroom Utilization….”

...For more information on the Board of Trustees decision regarding School of Choice please visit:

https://www.bsd.ca/news/pages/school-of-choice-information-.aspx

Students in Kindergarten to Grade 7 will be bringing home their registration packages on February 13th for you to make any necessary changes, and return to school. It is essential that these forms get returned to the school by February 23rd.

If your child is not returning to J.R. Reid for the 2018—2019 school year, we ask that you still send the registration package back indicating where your child(ren) will be attending school for the 2018-2019 school year.

Please look over the form carefully to be sure you haven’t missed anything. Phone numbers and e-mail addresses tend to change often.

Please print clearly, in particular your e-mail address. If we can’t read it, you won’t be receiving important school e-mails.

Emergency contacts are very important to give the school. If we can’t reach you in the event of an emergency, it is important that we reach someone you trust on your behalf.

Getting your form in quickly helps us complete data entry, which in turn enables BSD to get staffing in place for the new year. Be sure to sign and date the form.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION

All children born in 2013 are eligible to attend kindergarten in the 2018-2019 school year. It is important to register as early as possible so that staffing needs can be determined.

If you know of anyone in our catchment area who has a child of kindergarten age, please have them come to the school to register at their earliest convenience.

This is especially helpful for families that presently do not have children attending school.

SPECIAL REQUESTS If your child has been accepted

to attend J.R. Reid as a Special

Request Student for the 2017–

2018 school year, you are

required to complete the

registration process at your

catchment school as Special

Requests are only valid for one

school year.

Please be aware that J.R.

Reid has reached 100%

capacity.

Registration for Grade Eight Students transitioning into Grade Nine

Transitioning from Grade Eight to Grade Nine can be a stressful time for students and parents.

Our school team makes it easier for parents and students to make the tough decisions. If there are any questions regarding registration please call Ms. Spicer

or e-mail Mr. Carmichael for their assistance. Ms. Spicer, Resource Teacher: 204-729-0391

Mr. Carmichael, Gr. 8 Teacher: [email protected]

When you complete your child’s registration:

● Print clearly, we must be able to read all the information for data entry.

● Include your child’s 6 and 9 digit Health Card numbers.

● The Home Phone # is now titled Contact # please indicate which parent’s cell phone number should be entered here, as we can only have one. Individual cell numbers will still be entered in cell phone fields for each parent.

● Include at least one emergency contact person so we have someone to reach in the event of an emergency. Use a separate piece of paper if you have more than one.

● Be sure to sign and date where necessary. There is a page which requires you to sign and date twice, if one area is not signed we must send it back. One area is just for Media Permission, the other is for the Registration.

● The external / internal media information sheet (on pink) is yours to keep—you need not return it.

The Youth Revolution students have chosen “We are Silent” as their global campaign this year. They are holding this campaign on Monday, February 26th during the lunch hour, in the front hall outside the office. The YR Students will be visiting classrooms to make small presentations to gr. 4– 8. Any student who wishes to participate would collect pledges to participate in going silent during that lunch hour.

We Are Silent: It’s a common adage: Speak up for those who cannot speak themselves. But, in a world where every moment is drowned out by noise—music in our earbuds, friends gossiping, television in the background, social media feeds streaming—is it, in fact, more effective to stop talking? Would people take notice? The vow of silence is a long-practiced tradition, but it wasn’t until the last hundred years that it’s been used as a medium for protest and social justice. From the thousands of civil rights

activists who marched down the streets of Manhattan in 1917 without speaking a word to the commemorative demonstrations that took place in those same streets this past summer to mark the landmark protest, silence has long been used as a symbol for what shouldn’t need to be said: Everyone is equal. Pillar of Impact- Water: Clean Water and Sanitation Imagine if getting a drink of water wasn’t as simple as turning on your tap. Imagine you had to trek miles to a dirty river or polluted well and lug 40-pound jerry cans back to your family. Imagine you did this every day, a job so tedious yet crucial that it was essentially all you did. Imagine you were 12 years old.

Clean water isn’t a luxury, it’s a basic human right. But millions of people around the world don’t live near a reliable, clean water source, or have access to sanitary washing facilities, leaving them at risk of illness and deadly disease. Improving access to clean water is one of the most crucial and quickest ways to lift a community out of poverty. It reduces illness, allows girls to go to school (girls are generally tasked with retrieving the family’s water) and leads to better agriculture and access to food.

PATROL SAFETY

Students: Always obey and respect the patrols, they are trained in traffic safety and know what’s best!

* Parents: Please remind your children to look both ways before they cross the street.

Patrols: Be sure to remember which days you are on duty, and show up on time!

All Drivers of Motor Vehicles: DO NOT pick up or drop off students in the crosswalk. This puts all

pedestrians, and patrols at risk. Stopping for any amount of time in a crosswalk is illegal. Brandon City Police will be monitoring all vehicle activity periodically throughout the school year.

Patrols are on duty every day at 8:25 a.m. (ready @ 8:20), 11:45 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. except when the weather is extreme and/or the windchill is –27°C or greater.

Parents—you are your child’s first teacher. We ask that each of you coach your children on crossing safely, especially if they cross 26th Street.

Every child should be prepared for the occasion when patrols will not be on duty due to weather. Please also remind your child(ren) to treat the patrols with respect and to follow their instructions.

Pedestrians—Always activate the crossing lights when crossing at the crosswalk in front of the school. Make sure all vehicles come to a full stop before crossing the street.

On Wednesday, January 10, 2018 our patrol team was recognized for their hard work as the Safety Patrol Team of the month!

Two Brandon Wheat King players delivered sub sandwiches provided by Subway, hung out with the students and signed autographs.

Each patrol also received a ticket to the Jan 13th Wheat King game. Way to go JRR Patrol Team!

Upcoming Sports Events!

J.R. Reid Magazine Campaign

Our school will be running a magazine campaign starting February 26th. The goal of this fundraiser is to offer low prices on a large selection of magazine titles to students and their friends and families, as well as help to

increase literacy in our community.

Reading magazines forms life-long reading habits

Beautiful, colourful, and inviting, magazines are more likely to engage reluctant readers

Magazines educate and entertain, holding attention and igniting imagination

Foster a sense of ownership and build self-esteem.

Children love to get real mail! The Magazine Campaign information will come home with your student in late February, so please check their backpack for all the information you need. All profits will be used for various school /student activities.

Hope everyone had a great break!

In January we have been focused on getting back into routine and keeping our resolutions. Though its been cold outside, its been hot in the den, with our gr. K-4 students trying out new tag games, mini basketball games and trying new dance routines. Our gr. 5-8 students have been working on movement sequences where students have developed a routine incorporating juggling, skipping, ribbon and gymnastics. The main focus over the next couple months is basketball and working as a TEAM.

The Middle Years athletes are on the go for the season of Basketball. We have 2 teams participating this year, with the girls participating on Mondays and Wednesdays and the boys participating on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Mr. Carmichael is coaching the girls team

Mr. Moyer is coaching the boys team.

Middle Years’ Jamboree will be held on February 9

th and 10

th, Location

TBA

Our Year-End Jamboree will be on March 9th

and 10th, location TBA.

Lastly, we were very fortunate to have J&G Homes donate $250 towards our purchase of new Middle Years jerseys. As well, a very generous donation from parent council of $400 towards new hockey nets, jerseys and new Early Years equipment.

M.Y. VALENTINES

DANCE

Thursday, February 15th 7:00—9:00 p.m.

Dear Parents / Guardians,

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, J.R. Reid is undertaking a little “Love” project and we need your help!

We are asking that you or another special person in your child’s life (aunt, uncle, grandparent) make a Valentine for your child(ren) telling them what they love about them, or what makes them special. The students will, in return, make a Valentine for their special person (this will happen at school).

We have sent paper home as a starting point to make your Valentine. Feel free to add extra decorations (doilies, lace, ribbon, sequins, etc.) to make your Valentine unique and special.

Please return your Valentine to school by Monday, February 5, 2018. We will post these along the hallways starting on February 12, 2018. We feel this will be a nice way to celebrate our relationships and let each other know just how much we appreciate each other.

Thank you in advance for your participation.

Kaitlin P, Joseph H. & Kate B. from our Grade 8 class as well as Ryker M. & Steve O. from Vincent Massey - former J.R. Reid students - performed at “Jazz at the 40” on Tuesday, January 23rd. Congratulations on a splendid performance!

Thank you to the Bell family for their donation of puzzles and games to our Kindergarten class!
