the aging landscaping and will start during the month of February.

The Board of Director’s, at the present time, have approved the following projects during board meetings:

• Repair Spillway on Oakwood Blvd South. This is where our Retention Pond drains into the ditch on the south side of our prop-erty.

• Replace HVAC for the Computer Lab

• Replace the roof on the Laundry, Mainte-nance Shop and ISS Equipment Room.

• Replace the Maintenance Truck

The Shower Rooms are open to use with some fine tuning to do during the next couple of weeks. The good news is we finished the project under budget. I know people were im-patient and so was I. It took too long. But the finished product, in my opinion, was well worth it.

Remember we are OM Strong. The only way we continue to be strong is through working together and communicating.

W e have the Annual Membership Meeting for 2018 behind us. We

are starting the new year with a focus on con-tinuing to make Oakwood Manor Association best it can be. Going into an Annual Meeting the biggest worry of the Board is having the numbers to have a quorum. We have been very lucky over the years that our membership takes their responsibility seriously and exercise their responsibility to vote.

I need to thank all the members that volunteer their time to work the Annual Meeting. It takes many members to complete all the tasks to make the meeting run smoothly. Big thanks need to go out to Sharon Rump for organizing the volunteers. Special thanks go to Sabrina Wengerd, our Association Manager, for organ-izing all the paperwork, mailings and oversite.

I would like to thank Jim Crowl for the three years he served on the Board. I also want to thank Aggie Taylor for the four years she served on the Board. It was great working with Jim and Aggie and they served our community selflessly.

During this year we are hoping not to get into any major capital projects. We will be looking at putting together a proposal to renovate the Spa /Hot Tub in 2019 and present it to the membership in the fall. We also have put mon-ey in the budget to continue replacing some of

MICE-K-TEERS

By Sharon Rump

O n February 12 we will welcome our own Marica Berkey who will talk

about Android phones/tablets. If you have an android you will learn lots of neat things. She will also share a lot of photo tips that will make your phone cameras something you will be anxious to use. If you don’t have an android operating system you can still gain a lot of help-ful information. Please note that we are chang-ing the meeting date to the second Monday of the month at 10:00 am.

I have had feedback from our leaders who have been hosting the open lab on Thursday’s. The comment is that a lot of time is wasted most days with no one showing up. We are go-ing to amend our Thursday lab as an appoint-ment lab. If you have an issue/question that you would like help with, call Wayne MacDur-mon at 856-322-6490 and leave a short mes-sage about what the problem is. He will call back and set up an appointment that is conven-ient to you both. This has been very successful. We also have a lab on Monday’s from 2 - 4 PM.

On another note, when you come to the lab it is for learning something or getting help. The problem or issue will be addressed but you will do the work needed for the solution. You will be guided step by step but will learn how to fix the problem so that the next time you will know how to take care of it yourself. Having someone else do it doesn’t help you learn.

Happy Computing!

Book Tales

By Joan Kaye

A pilgrimage can be described as a long journey or a search of moral or

spiritual significance. We join Harold Fry on his journey as he seeks forgiveness and meaning to his life. Following receiving a letter from a friend who wants him to know that she is dying, he pens a response, sets out to mail it and finds himself walking 600 miles to deliv-er it in person. "The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry" by Rachel Joyce chronicles this amazing journey. To say more would give away too much of this beautiful story of trans-formation, understanding and devotion. Writ-ten in clear, unembellished language, Joyce has given us a "hero" and those impacting his life, a cast of characters who will be long re-membered. Get to know Harold Fry, either through this book or the movie version. It will be an enriching experience.

Next month's meeting will be on Friday Febru-ary 16 at 1:00 PM at the club house. The se-lection is "The Zoo Keeper's Wife" by Diane Ackerman; a non fiction account of life at the Warsaw Poland zoo during the Nazi occupa-tion and the immediate aftermath. Ackerman has meticulously researched her material. Her writing is straightforward and compel-ling. "The Zoo Keeper's Wife" is a hard to put down read.

Everyone is always welcome at book club! For more information contact

MANAGER’S CORNER

By Sabrina Wengerd

I would like to begin by thanking every-one that helped at the annual meeting.

We would not have been able to have such an efficient meeting had it not been for the help and organization that you all contributed to. Thank you again!

I would just like to take this opportunity to re-mind all of you about a few items.

PARKING-make sure you park with the flow of traffic if you park on the street, this includes guests, contractors and vendors. I see wrong way parking primarily with contractors. If you are having work performed at your home please remind your contractor to park with the flow of traffic. Parking against the flow of traffic is a parking violation and would warrant a tick-et anywhere in Sarasota. It should be en-forced at Oakwood Manor as well. Make sure all wheels are on the street and not on the grass, this includes golf carts parking on the grass.

SAFETY-the speed limit on our streets is 20 miles per hour. Please obey the speed limits. There are bicyclists and walkers on the streets many times of the day and night. Make sure you lock your doors when you are not home, although we are gated we still can't be to care-ful. Remind your guests and contractors to use the Fruitville entrance and not the west gate, the west gate is strictly for residents. Please do not open the west gate for anyone if they are in front of you in traffic. This happens all to often when someone should be using the front gate, someone behind them opens the gate.

PLAN APPROVAL-if your are making any changes to the exterior of your home or land-scaping please remember to get a "Plan Ap-proval Form" from the office before you begin any work.

Have a Happy February!

“Let’s Dance” Dance Workshop

By Judy Cowan

Y ou love to dance, right? You enjoy the sensation of moving to the beat of the

music while dancing with or without a partner. “Let’s Dance” is a workshop designed for you!

This class is not about dance steps or tradi-tional styles of dance like line dancing or ball-room dancing. It is about expanding your free-dom in movement and being more confident on the dance floor. It’s about breaking com-mon patterns of movement and finding new ways of connecting through dance. It’s about feeling more comfortable dancing with different partners. It’s about play and fun. There’s no experience, level of skill or ability required to participate. Attend with an open mind and will-ingness to explore, with or without a partner. The workshop will be co-led by Judy and Neil Cowan.

This free class will be held on Friday, February 9, 7-8:30 pm in the clubhouse and has a lim-ited enrollment. A sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board. Or call Judy Cowan, 203-

THE SHUFFLE NEWS

by. S. Yoder

H ere we are with the start of a brand new year, January 2018. It seems

that the older one gets, the faster time goes by, the more hurried life becomes the “be hinder we become”. The first competitive team tour-nament was Jan 16 with Southwind and we were very successful with 17 wins for Oakwood, 7 wins for Southwind. We love all the spectators who came court side to support our guys and gals. Thanks.

When someone you love and respect becomes a memory, the memories become a treasure like none other. As shuffle club members gath-ered for their first meeting of the year, moments and memories were shared with a moment of silence to reflect on the times shared with Rob-ert Dillon, the acting club president who passed from his earthly home December 13th. Bob, as we all know him, was the most gentle, compas-sionate gentleman, willing worker, helper and respectful of all around him. Bob was the one who established the ‘old timer shufflers reunion’ inviting those who were able, to come to the courts for a fun day of playing if they could, or watching others, and of course there was food involved. Watch for the date for this event coming up. We will wait till the weather is more desirable before setting the date for this event. The temperature needs to increase considera-bly before we ask our loved senior players to come to the courts for a time of fun, food and fellowship.

As we kick off the start of a new season, we already have 60 some paid members in the shuffle club. The $10.00 gets you into most of the tournaments and shuffle food events held here at Oakwood Manor.

Dave Cooper, as the club president, was well prepared with an agenda for the January meet-ing with a long list of “up-coming” events for the season ahead. New in-park tournaments are in place which adds to the excitement of some-

thing new "going on here”. It was Bob Dillon's idea to have an on going tournament for all those WHO ARE NOT on the competitive team, to have some competition amongst the regular Monday, Wednesday, and Friday play days. It involves just regular three games be-ing played, and then reporting your wins or loss for each game to a score keeper. Not a high maintenance tournament, but a fun way for those not involved with the competitive team to actually get into the running of some play off money. The competitive team mem-bers can play, just not record their wins/losses. Players will draw a token for each game, just like every day playing.

Come have some fun!! And you can come and play and not record your score, come one play day and not the next. Your choice of when and how many. No pressure…..

The second new tournament is an OAKWOOD SHUFFLE TEAM LEAGUE. Ken Jones pro-posed this one which is set up like a golf league and there is an added fee. The first meeting for interested persons was held on Jan 18th. See Ken Jones for information on this.

The in-park tournaments for singles, doubles, mixed, and men verses women are all in pro-gress so watch the court side bulletin boards for more information on these events.

As before, if anyone is interested in learning the game of shuffle board, there are willing persons to help you. C.J Yoder, George Manekas, Pete Yoder. Call for a time that works for both learner’s and instructors.

IMPORTANT DATE: March 3rd. Oakwood flea market. Save your treasures for the shuf-fle team tables!!

NAPLES BOTANICAL GARDENS

TUESDAY FEBRUARY 20TH, 2018 $99.00

Arrive upon the beautiful grounds of the Na-ples Botanical Gardens which was established in 1993 by a visionary group of local plant en-thusiasts. The mission of this group was to de-velop and conserve collections and habitats representative of the flora and cultures be-tween the 26 latitudes. To discover, research and share knowledge about these plants and their gifts to us of beauty, tranquility, suste-nance and well being. Also, to engage and in-spire everyone to care for the plants around them and become stewards of the environ-ment. The garden tour lasts 60-90 minutes and features more than 170 acres of lush tropical plants and foliage. Trip Advisor ranks Naples Botanical Gardens as the #1 attraction in Na-ples. After touring the gardens, enjoy lunch a pre-selected meal in the Fogg Café. Next, we will hop on the Naples Trolley and enjoy a 1 ½ hr tour of Naples narrated by a step on guide.

WELCOME TO YOUR SHARE IN PARADISE

By Cindy Lavezzo

T his month I would like to introduce our new neighbor, Kristin Noel. Kris-

tin has moved into 3323 Spanish Oak Ter-race. You may have seen her cruising around in her lime green car. The next time you see her I do hope you will wave and give this love-ly lady a huge Oakwood Manor welcome.

Kristin hales from Maryland but she moved to Sarasota with her two daughters in 1981. Her girls now live in Clearwater so she is lucky enough to have family nearby (including some grand dogs). Kristin has had many jobs in her life: wife and stay at home mom when her girls were small, Certified Nursing Assistant, private duty nurse, and sales rep for medical equipment. A few of her "passions" include interior design and holistic healing.

Kristin lived in the area and heard about Oakwood Manor and what a special place it is long before she moved here. When she was ready to downsize she found her perfect home and says she has no plan to ever move again. Kristin is still having work done on her house and when it is finished she hopes to relearn bridge, (she says she may need some refresher lessons since it's been many years since she last played). Once the house up-dates are completed I think we will find this fun lady enjoying our community and I know you will all make her feel at home.

We would also like to thank the people who do-nated some of the door prizes.

The door prize winners were: Mike Clemens, Frank Dawes, Mary Fretz, MJ Paul, Chris Quayle, Bryan Rennick and Linda Short.

50, 30 and 20 winners were: Gordon Quayle, Janet Jackson and Diane Promovost.

Thanks to all for your attendance and y’all come back next year, ya hear!!!!
