Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which trans-cends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians:4:6-7

Another Hail Mary!? If you are a fan of the Green Bay Packers – and let’s face it, who isn’t (besides Pastor Schreiner) – you have become very familiar with the term “Hail Mary” in the past two years. For those who don’t follow football, let me explain. When the time is running out at the end of the first half or the end of the game sometimes a team will simply throw the ball as far as they can in a last ditch effort to get points before the clock hits zero. It’s not a very high per-centage play (unless you’re Aaron Rodgers) but it’s one you see from time to time, and it’s very exciting when someone actually catches the ball.

It seems that calling this play a “Hail Mary” originated with Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback Roger Staubach. The term became widespread after a December 28, 1975 NFL playoff game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Minnesota Vikings, when Staubach (a Roman Catholic) said about his game-winning touchdown pass to wide receiver Drew Pearson, “I closed my eyes and said a Hail Mary.” For many in the Roman Catholic church praying to Jesus’ mother Mary is a reg-ular (although very misguided) part of their faith life. That’s for another article however… But just think about how this prayer has taken on a whole new mean-ing in a football game. I wonder if we ever treat our prayers to God in a simi-lar fashion?

Do we wait until after we’ve exhausted every play in our book before throwing a prayer up to God? Do we treat prayer as a last ditch effort? Do we view it as a low percentage play, and expect it to fail more often than not? This is not what God has taught us about prayer. Our amazing God forgave our sins when Jesus died on the cross for us. And when he brought us to faith in Je-sus he gave us that forgiveness as our own personal possession. But he also gave us something else: the right to come to him in prayer. As a part of

God’s family we are invited to speak to God about anything and everything. And as his children we have this amaz-ing privilege to know that when we speak God always is listening. So why is it that prayer so often can become our final resort instead of our first response? Just imagine if a child never once spoke to his father unless he was in desperate trouble – and even then did not project any confidence that his father could hear him or would care to answer him. That would break a fa-ther’s heart! Lord, forgive us for the times we have ignored your precious gift of prayer and thought we could do it all on our own without any help from you! In the verse above from Philippians, St. Paul reminds us that God wants us to pray to him about everything and trust that his peace will be with us no matter how our prayers are answered. So go to God in prayer, dear Christian! Tell him how you adore him and are so grateful for his saving work in your life. Confess your sins to him and ask for forgiveness and renewed strength to serve. Thank him for the many blessings he has poured out into your life. And bring your petitions. He is our Almighty Father. He is our All-knowing Savior. He is our Ever-present Spirit. He will know how best to supply what you need.

From the Pastor’s Pen, Cont.

Our prayers are not like a “Hail Mary” pass. We don’t just throw up a prayer and hope for a miracle. We go boldly and confidently to God’s throne of grace. We ask God for the very things he’s promised in his Word. We seek his answers on the pages of Scripture. And we trust that the blessings we see in our lives are his gracious response to our petitions. Our God catches every prayer we throw before him and he gives us the victory he’s won for us through Jesus. Let’s pray: Heavenly Father, you are full of mercy and wisdom; you forgive us each time we sin; you pour out underserved bless-ings on us daily; you are so good. Please help us to read and hear your Word regularly that we might know the good things you’ve promised, and knowing them ask for them again and again. Fill us with confidence in your wisdom and mercy. And when we don’t perceive or understand the answers to our prayers in this life, give us the peace that surpasses all understanding to guard our hearts and minds from doubting you. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen. Pastor Jasper Sellnow

Christmas 2016 Reaches New Visitors

A Message from Pastor Alvien DeGuzman

The Lord has richly blessed our December activities which were largely outreach activities and evangelistic in nature. In total, we had 27 visitors in all of our activities, mostly parents of our Sunday School kids and youth – 25 of whom were first time visitors. Our Advent Movie Night featuring “My Son My Savior” drew 30 people in attendance, most of whom were also first time prospects. Our Kids & Youth Christmas Play & Fellowship was attended by close to 60 people while we had more than 40 people in our Christmas Day Worship & Fellowship.

We’ve also launched our women’s ministry before the year ended which aims to reach the mothers of our Sunday School kids and youth and other women in the community. It was attended by 14 women. They’ve agreed to meet every last Sunday of each month.

While we rejoiced in this great development and in the ministry opportunities the Lord has opened for us, we recognize the hard truth that the greater & more difficult challenge of having these people continue in the study of God’s Word has just begun. We are a Roman Catholic country where it is not uncommon for cultural Catholics (including most of our prospects) to flock to churches during major church observanc-es and celebrations such as the Christmas season. Even so, the Lord has provided us with this great and wonderful opportunity to lead these people away from man-made teachings and traditions and into the truth of God’s Word that brings true freedom.

We are thankful for your support without which we would not have been able to ac-complish so many things. We are entering 2017 with high hopes and in high spirits. But “Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God…”

To Him be all the praise, glory, and honor!

Thank

You!

Dear Mount Olive,

I would like to thank you for your gracious gift in helping me with my education at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary. It always makes me happy to know people are praying for us, encouraging us to continue, and financially helping us out. It is a long road to become a pastor, and whatever help we receive is greatly appreciated. I cannot believe my education to become a pastor is quickly coming to a close. I am looking forward to working with God’s people, and putting into practice what I have been taught all these years while going to Mount Olive, FVL, MLC, and now the Seminary.

Elise, my wife, and I are enjoying our last couple of months at the seminary. Elise is working at Steffen Middle School as one of the lead secretaries. She also served as a secretary at South Dakota State University in Brookings last year during my vicar year. I was assigned to Our Savior Lutheran Church where I served for one year. It was a wonderful experience with amazing people. During my vicar year I found it was a nice taste of what ministry life will be like in just a couple of months. We’re excited to see what God’s plans are for us as we will find out in May where he will have us serve him and his people!

I would like to thank you again for your help this year and all the previous years. I pray God would continue to bless you and Mount Olive as you continue your work of spreading the Gospel message of our Savior, Jesus Christ to the community and around the world.

In Christ, Matt Stuebs

Dear Mount Olive Members,

Just a short, sincere note to thank all of you for your concern, visits, cards,

and prayers during my recent ‘incarceration.’

I am convinced that your actions have helped immensely during the ‘Dark

Days’ (of which there were many) of my recuperation. But with God’s help

and presence the future looks bright and I should be able to function normally

in the near future.

Again a special ‘Thank You’ to All!

Sincerely, Lloyd Hoeffner
