actions – concerns on all sides as
to how the company would develop
under the new aegis.
Overall the balance after one year is
quite positive. Not only have we en-
gaged in exchanges with our new
colleagues, but have also advanced
process optimization projects, and
launched new activities on accele-
rating and improving our processes
while increasing employee satisfac-
tion. The fact that Barry-Wehmiller
has a great deal of experience in ac-
quiring and strengthening companies
yet also places emphasis on satisfied
employees and customers has defi-
nitely paid off. We look to the future
with confidence and wish you a suc-
cessful 2017.
In contrast to the development of transactional mail, we see good op-portunities for the further growth of direct mail. We are therefore con-vinced that the future of envelopes and the success of the direct mailing segment are closely connected.
In light of the fact that direct mail is
the driving force in envelope produc-
tion, W+D would like to announce a
new event: Direct Mail Days 2017.
Over two days, visitors will be able to
learn about and discuss the market
factors and trends uniquely critical
to direct mail at a symposium with
presentations in English and German.
We will also present the solutions
available from W+D for handling the
challenges facing this field. It will also
touch on technology and software

Cashing in on ideas
In the envelope field, countless processing possibilities exist for windowing with the use of special cutting forms. In the last InFocus (November 2016), we presented a shape-cut envelope with UV spot lacquer and softtouch varnishing. This time we will show you a direct mail envelope with special features for the window’s form and material.
With the W+D 410 Easy Enveloper,
an “E” is cut out for a window and
aluminum paper glued behind it. This
achieves an effective film lamination
appearance without the need for
several applications of lacquer.
Besides silver and gold foil, a variety
of colors and materials can be used.
Thanks to flexible EasyCut® magnet
cylinder technology, various window
shapes can be designed. A second
window, e.g. for the address field, is
also possible with a second window
material infeed station with the Easy
Enveloper – there are virtually no
limits to the ideas of your customers
or your own design proposals.
This envelope, which we have
produced in DIN long format, but also
live at trade fairs in C5, has always been
a popular product sample. Our W+D
410 Easy Enveloper has proven itself
under real production conditions and
with only one machine operator as an
envelope machine that can produce
high-quality, demanding envelopes
like these. They are constructed from
pre-printed rectangular sheets of
120g/m² UPM Insert Plus from the
company UPM. Alternatively, internal
and external printing is also possible
with optional inline flexographic
printing units.
The sample envelope that we attached here has been removed? Ask yourW+D representative to send you a new sample.

Bochsler: Bringing people and technologyup to date with the help of audits
Envelope specialist Bochsler from Ebi-kon, Switzerland, has been producing envelopes since 1919. The company, which employs 20 people, not only manufactures standard formats, but also specializes in niche and custom-made formats and products.
“Rather than high output, the highest
degree of flexibility counts most for
us, so we don’t have any out and
out high-performance envelope
folding machines in operation,”
explains Daniel Husman, Managing
Director of Bochsler. “This makes the
investment horizon of our machines
significantly different from a company
that produces only standard products.
Nevertheless, of course, we need to
know how long we can still count on a
machine, or if there are any difficulties
that might arise.”
With this in mind, the company decided
last year to conduct W+D machine
audits for its W+D 326 and W+D 381
envelope machines. In the spring, the
new W+D 326 was examined in detail
for a week, followed by one-week
of intensive operator training. The
three-and-a-half-day pure machine
audit of the W+D 381 took place in
September.
“Both machine audits have proven to
be very valuable and significant and
important information is exchanged
between the W+D technicians and the
operating staff that doesn’t pertain only
to the technology. This is very helpful
for us. Over the years, the company
has developed a certain operational
blindness regarding the capabilities of
its machines, unaware that it is possible
to manufacture other unique envelope
formats and products. We have
benefited tremendously from this audit
since we have been able to significantly
improve performance and quality,” says
Husmann. “In this respect, the machine
audits have two positive aspects for us:
we get the security of knowing exactly
what to do from a technical viewpoint
so that the respective machine will
continue to be productive for us into
the future. At the same time, we are able
to provide our operators with valuable
new and additional information, which
significantly increases our productivity
and flexibility.”
Integration of F.L. Smithe on schedule
Since 2008, F.L. Smithe has been a part of the Paper Converting Machinery Company (PCMC), a subsidiary of the Barry-Wehmiller Group. In the course of an intensification of cooperation between PCMC and W+D within BW’s Converting Solutions Platform, W+D assumed operating responsibility for F.L. Smithe from January 1, 2017. “That Barry-Wehmiller would entrust us with this responsibility is quite a compliment, not to mention recognition of W+D’s success in this segment,” says Frank Eichhorn, CEO of the W+D Group.

W+D to present its latest multiformat envelopeinserting system W+D BB550 XL
At Hunkeler Innovationdays 2017, W+D will be presenting its newest envelope inserting system
Versatility is one of the most
important features of the W+D BB550
XL multiformat system. The servo-
driven machine not only reliably
processes all formats from C6/DL
to B4, but also large envelopes with
a deeper insertion up to C4 shipping
pockets, the flap of which can also be
located on the short side. The second
important feature of the BB550 XL is
an expanded packaging strength of
up to 25mm. The BB550 XL is thus a
highly efficient and flexible inserting
system for all packaging solutions
needs.
One system for many formatsWith its high processing reliability, the
W+D BB550 XL is ideal for financial
and insurance applications as well as
mailings, which can now be inserted
mechanically instead of manually.
It not only efficiently inserts large
and small runs of personalized and
confidential documents, however,
but is optimal for use by direct mail
service providers and for fulfillment
and packaging applications as well.
A hand-held station is also available
for the W+D BB550 XL. In addition,
the W+D BB550 XL easily handles
cardboard and express envelopes
(FedEx, UPS, etc.) and can be equipped
with hot glue to close the flaps. We look forward to having you stop by our booth B6.
New catalog feeder CF2The W+D CF2 new feeder type will
also be premiering at Innovationdays.
The CF (Catalog Feeder) 2 was
developed specifically for print-on-
demand solutions. The CF2 was
developed based on W+D rotary
feeders, and offers new features for
front pulling and the ability to process
products with a variable thickness of
1-10mm without having to make any
adjustments.
At Innovationdays, the W+D BB550
XL will perform two different jobs to
demonstrate its diverse possibilities
with regard to different envelope
formats and inserts. We will also be
presenting other W+D innovations
such as the W+D 410 Easy Enveloper
and our new service products.
Integration of F.L. Smithe on schedule
With Duncansville and Lenexa, W+D
now has two sites in the US, whose
more than 50 employees serve
current and future North American
customers with extensive envelope
and mail segment experience. “In
the long term, our North American
employees will be cross-trained to
take over system services from W+D,
POEM and F.L. Smithe,” explains Shaun
Kilfoyle, President and CEO of W+D
North America.
For the time being, F.L. Smithe and
W+D customers will continue to be
supported by their usual contacts.
“We will maintain intensive contact
over the coming weeks and months
to ensure that customers who are
shared by both companies to a large
extent, will not be adversely impacted
by any changes, large or small,
that we make,” says Kilfoyle. “The
reactions of our employees as well as
our customers and the industry have
been consistently positive. Thanks
in no small measure to the high
commitment of the entire workforce,
we are on the right path forward.”

Kaenguruh Kuvert: always a jump aheadwith new W+D technology
The name “Kaenguruh” has always been known for expertise and flexibility in the envelope industry.
The company has consistently
invested in the latest technology
over the past few years and is now
investing even further. “In a market
that has been shrinking for years, it
is particularly important that we can
deliver the highest quality envelopes
at reasonable prices. This is the only
way to achieve our goal of keeping
loyal customers, gaining new
customers, achieving full production
capacity and making money,” explains
Jürgen Haist, CEO of Kaenguruh
Kuvert GmbH.
Kaenguruh has counted on the high-
performance W+D 202 RE envelope
machines for years, and always
keeps them up-to-date and in great
condition with W+D support. “Our
oldest machine is from 2011 – other
envelope manufacturers can only
dream of such a thing,” says Haist. The
latest machine was just delivered late
last year and has been in successful
use since January 2017.
High quality convinces
“Flexographic printing has been in
constant development in recent
years, which is partly responsible for
the shift from offset toward flexo
printing. Older flexo print systems
for web or roll production could
not achieve the required quality
standards. So our machines today
are all equipped with the state-of-
the-art printing towers W+D 201 NR
with a common impression cylinder,”
Haist adds. The new technology’s
advantages have convinced him:
“With integrated camera monitoring
and a control unit with an integrated
joystick, the printing pattern is ready
for production quickly. This means
significantly shorter set-up times
and fewer rejects. Thanks to this new
technology, we’re achieving the high
quality that we’re known for, and are
able to secure – in fact, already have
secured – numerous orders from
our loyal existing customers and
from new customers from all over
Europe.”

W+D energy measuring system: an important building block for electricity savings
For a long time, energy-intensive operations that participated in peak balancing could manage a form relatively easily. With the amendment of the Energy Services Act in 2015, this only became possible with the execution of an energy audit or the introduction of an energy management system in accordance with ISO 50001.
Pflüger Lober Kuvert, a company out
of Erlangen, Germany, specializing in
highly refined envelope production,
also faced this challenge, and after an
in-depth analysis of internal energy
consumption, determined that 75-
80% of total energy consumption
was attributed to air supply and
envelope machines. “In the next
step, we needed to examine machine
consumption to optimize potential
efficiencies,” explains Rüdiger Popp,
Commercial Director of Pflüger
Kuvert GmbH and the company’s
energy management officer.
After successfully certifying the
energy management system in the
spring of 2015, Pflüger installed a new
W+D measuring system in June 2016
on two W+D 627 GS machines which
can easily read and analyze data in
the office or on a home computer
via W+D’s expert online connection.
“What was surprising about the result
was the fact that at one machine
the drying process was permanently
engaged – heating even when it
wasn’t necessary. This of course
caused enormous costs, but with a
software adaptation from W+D these
could be significantly reduced,” Popp
explains. “The great advantage of
a vendor-based system is that the
company knows its machines and
can quickly determine what level of
consumption is needed – and can
expertly implement the appropriate
measures.”
In his view, the energy management
system has a doubly positive effect:
“We continue to receive our electricity
tax refunds, but we have also taken
some important steps in reducing our
overall energy consumption.” In light
of what we have learned, we intend
to install W+D’s energy management
systems on additional envelope
production machines in 2017. “We are
definitely very satisfied: we know that
the W+D system works and results
